Conversion and utilization of waste biomass into sustainability treasure: Surface modified eggplant biomass by PEI and enhanced removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

Yao Zhu,Jiayi Hua,Junjie Yuan,Ziyu Yuan,Yuting Dai,Tao Zhang,Fengxian Qiu

It is imperative to develop innovative methods for transforming natural biomass waste into environmentally benign and cost-effective functional adsorbents for use in the remediation of contaminated water environment. In this work, a polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized biomass-based adsorbent (PEI@E-Bio) with a high density of amino groups and rough and expansive surface was synthesized using waste eggplant as the raw material, exhibiting a high removal efficiency and a rapid rate of Pb(II) removal from polluted water. The maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency of 99.36 % was achieved for the optimized run with conditions of pH: 6, temperature: 20 °C, adsorption time: 90 min, PEI@E-Bio dosage: 0.2 g/L, and initial Pb(II) concentration: 10 mg/L. The pseudo-second order kinetic model provides a superior fit to the adsorption data, suggesting that the removal of Pb(II) by the PEI@E-Bio adsorbent occurs via a chemisorption process. Additionally, the influence of microstructure and surface chemistry on Pb(II) adsorption efficiency was also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the plate-like structure was the primary factor influencing the physical adsorption process. Conversely, the abundance of functional amino groups could markedly enhance the impact of chemical adsorption. The negative values of Δ H o and Δ G o demonstrate that the exothermic characteristic of the spontaneous and feasible adsorption process. The PEI@E-Bio has demonstrated robust adsorption stability and efficient regeneration performance in practical applications, highlighting its potential as a feasible, cost-efficient, and sustainable material for removing Pb(II). This research study is centered on the transformation of natural waste into biomass to effectively eliminate pollutants. It establishes a theoretical framework for environmentally conscious waste treatment, resource utilization, and the conversion of waste biomass into advanced materials.

Sequential grafting of PEI on PDA-anchored graphene oxide for enhanced xylose dehydrogenase Catalysis: Positively charged surface interfaces and mechanistic insights via molecular simulation

Yifan Gui,Gen Lu,Chengyu Sun,Ya Wu,Xu Wang,Yuanmin Zhu,Wenwen Jin,Longjiang Yu

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) composites, sequentially enhanced with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), were developed for the innovative immobilization of xylose dehydrogenase (XylB). These composites were designed to achieve positively charged surfaces, aiming to explore the potential interactions between the enzyme and the modified composites. The focus was particularly on determining whether these modifications could improve the enzyme's catalytic performance and stability. Characterization was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the structure-function correlations of immobilized XylB, revealing significant enhancements in thermal stability and catalytic performance compared to its free counterpart. Notably, the immobilized enzyme retained over 85 % of its activity after four consecutive usage cycles and exhibited double the residual activity compared to free XylB after 30 days of storage at 4 °C. Additionally, the immobilized system achieved a 1.4-fold increase in xylonic acid yield relative to the free system. This approach not only highlights the potential of advanced material composites in industrial enzyme applications but also sets a foundation for further research into sustainable biocatalyst technologies.

PDGFR-α shRNA-polyplex for uveal melanoma treatment via EMT mediated vasculogenic mimicry interfering

Jiahao Wang,Zhirong Chen,Peiyi Zhao,Yajia Wang,Jiang Chen,Quankui Lin

Up to 50% of individuals with uveal melanoma (UM), a frequent cancer of the eye, pass away from metastases. One of the major challenges in treating UM is the role of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), which mediate the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of tumors. RTKs are involved in binding multiple growth factors, leading to angiogenesis and vasculogenic mimicry (VM) phenomena. Currently, most anti-angiogenic drugs have shown a tendency to increase the VM of tumors in clinical trials, resulting in limited efficacy. The existing gap in UM treatment lies in the lack of effective strategies to target RTK-mediated EMT and VM. While some approaches have been attempted, there is still a need for novel therapeutic interventions that can specifically interfere with these processes. This research employed the gene vector PEI-g-PEG to interfere with the platelet derived growth factor-alpha receptor (PDGFR-α)-mediated EMT process, thereby retarding the growth of UM. The cell experiments demonstrated that the gene polyplex exhibited favorable cell uptake and lysosome escape properties, effectively suppressing the expression of PDGFR-α protein and EMT marker proteins and the occurrence of VM phenomenon. In vivo animal studies also inhibited the growth of UM, and PAS assays showed that the treatment reduced the generation of VM in tumor tissue. This study broadens the application of PEI-g-PEG while interfering with the RTK-mediated tumor EMT process with the help of RNAi technology, providing a new idea for tumor reduction research.

Improved High-Temperature Capacitive Performance of Poly(ether imide) by Copolymerization with Molecular Semiconductors

Likun Zang,Mingyang Zhang,Fuyuan Liu,Hui Tong

The demand for high-temperature polymer dielectrics continues to rise in fields such as smart grids, wind power generation, and electric vehicles. However, high-temperature dielectrics like poly(ether imide) (PEI) still face the issue of leakage current under electrothermal coupling fields, leading to a sharp decrease in the energy storage density. To address this challenge, we propose a molecular semiconductor copolymerization strategy, wherein 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTCDA) and 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride are incorporated into the PEI backbone. This approach not only suppresses space charge migration but also ensures long-term leakage current stabilization, significantly improving the charge–discharge cycling stability and energy storage density. Crucially, copolymerization eliminates the risk of nanoscale phase separation between semiconductors and PEI matrices, ensuring uniform dielectric properties. By systematically optimizing the molecular semiconductor content, we demonstrate that a 0.125 mol % copolymerized PEI (NTCDA-co-PEI) achieves a remarkable energy storage density of 3.91 J/cm3 at 150 °C─double that of intrinsic PEI─while maintaining a stable dissipation factor. This work provides a scalable molecular design strategy for high-performance polymer dielectrics operating under extreme electrothermal conditions, paving the way for next-generation capacitive energy storage systems.

Macrophage-targeting and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive nanopolyplexes mediate anti-inflammatory siRNA delivery against acute liver failure (ALF)

Wenxin Zhang,Yang Zhou,Xudong Li,Xin Xu,Yongbing Chen,Rongying Zhu,Lichen Yin

As one of the intractable challenges in the clinic, the treatment of acute liver failure (ALF) is limited due to high mortality and resource cost. RNA interference (RNAi) provides a new modality for the anti-inflammatory therapy of ALF, while its therapeutic efficacy is greatly hampered by the lack of effective carriers to cooperatively overcome the various systemic barriers. Herein, we developed macrophage-targeting and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive polyplexes to enable efficient systemic delivery of TNF-α siRNA (siTNF-α) to attenuate hepatic inflammation in mice bearing ALF. Se-PEI, obtained from the cross-linking of 600 Da polyethylenimine (PEI) via the ROS-responsive diselenide bond, was developed to condense siTNF-α, and the obtained polyplexes were further coated with carboxylated mannan (Man-COOH). Man-COOH coating allowed active targeting of polyplexes to macrophages with over-expressed mannose receptors (MRs), and it shielded the surface positive charges to enhance the serum stability of polyplexes. Se-PEI could be degraded by ROS in inflammatory macrophages to promote intracellular siRNA release to potentiate the gene knockdown efficiency, and in the meantime reduce the material cytotoxicity associated with high molecular weight. As such, i.v. injected Man-COOH/Se-PEI/siTNF-α polyplexes afforded notable TNF-α silencing by ∼80% in inflamed liver tissues at 500 μg siRNA per kg, and notably reduced serum TNF-α levels to achieve potent anti-inflammatory performance against ALF.

Mechanism of Synergistic Effect between PDA-PEI-Mediated Interface Bonding Optimization and Transfer Film Formation in Regulating the Tribological Properties of Aramid Particle/PTFE Composites

Shan Huang,Xiaoliang Fang,Yanguo Yin,Wei Liu,Qi Chen,Xiaozeng Guo

Aramid particles (AP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) impart tribological application potential to AP/PTFE composites, but weak interfacial bonding and poor formation of high-quality transfer films hinder performance enhancement. In this study, AP was surface-functionalized using a simple, mild, eco-friendly polydopamine (PDA)-polyethylenimine (PEI) synergistic strategy to fabricate AP-PDA-PEI/PTFE composites. Systematic investigations were conducted on their microscopic mechanical properties, tensile strength, tribological performance, and underlying mechanisms. Results indicate that PDA-PEI modification enhances the interfacial microscopic mechanical properties between AP and PTFE. Compared to AP/PTFE, the modified composite’s interfacial modulus is increased by 89.67%. AP 10 -PDA-PEI/PTFE exhibits a tensile strength of 35   MPa, 59.1% higher than AP 10 /PTFE. Characterizations of interfacial microtopography and elemental distribution confirm enhanced interfacial bonding. At 3   MPa, 6.5   MPa, and 10   MPa, AP 10 /PTFE has average friction coefficients of 0.185, 0.157, and 0.150, respectively, with wear rates of ~10 -6 mm 3 /(N·m). In contrast, AP 10 -PDA-PEI/PTFE shows optimal tribological performance: its average friction coefficients are reduced by 15.1%, 12.0%, and 30.2%, with wear rate decreased to ~10 -7 mm 3 /(N·m) (one order of magnitude lower than unmodified AP 10 /PTFE). Wear scar and transfer film characterizations reveal that the composite’s excellent performance stems from the synergy of optimized interfacial bonding and transfer film formation. Enhanced interfacial bonding inhibits AP debonding, while transfer film formation facilitates tribochemical reactions. This transforms the sliding contact mode to tribofilm-transfer film contact, achieving stable, low-wear lubrication.

Sustainable Enhancement of Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Interface via Eco-Friendly MPN/PEI co-Deposition: A Synergistic Approach Integrating Metal Polyphenol Networks and Bio-Based Coatings

Yining Wang,Anqi Xia,Kaining Zhang,Zhiqiang Yao,Dongzhi Wang

At present, there have been numerous studies on the surface modification of carbon fibers (CF); however, there are still problems such as toxic reagents and complex modification processes. This study proposes an environmentally benign modification strategy featuring mild reaction conditions and high efficiency, aiming to enhance both the interfacial bonding capacity between CF and epoxy resin matrices and the resultant mechanical performance. The metal polyphenol networks (MPN) were synthesized through coordination between tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ ions, which were subsequently co-deposited with polyethyleneimine (PEI) via phenol-amine conjugation to construct a hybrid MPN/PEI coating on fiber surfaces. The effect of the mass ratio of MPN to PEI on the deposition process was investigated. Maximum interfacial enhancement was achieved at an optimal MPN:PEI mass ratio of 1:2, as evidenced by comprehensive characterization. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), interfacial shear strength (IFSS), flexural strength, and transverse fiber bundles tensile strength (TFBT) of the composites were 84.17 MPa, 81.27 MPa, 1215.68 MPa, and 38.62 MPa, respectively, which were increased by 52.15%, 66.71%, 126.89%, and 89.97%, respectively, compared to the untreated CF composites. The use of biological materials for simple and efficient deposition provides a new idea for CF surface modification.

Crosslinked Polymer Coatings of Poly (Acrylic Acid-co-acrylamide)/Polyethyleneimine (P(AA-co-AAm)/PEI) on Titanium Alloy with Excellent Lubrication Performance for Artificial Joints

Yaling Deng,Yu Xu,Lei Nie,Yiyang Huang

The development of coatings with efficient lubrication and load-bearing capacity is an urgent need for artificial joints. Here, we successfully fabricated poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/polyethyleneimine (P(AA-co-AAm)/PEI) coating on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surface via UV irradiation and thermal treatment technique. The dual crosslinked network structures were composed of a P(AA-co-AAm) network via free radical polymerization and a PAA-co-PEI network via thermal crosslinking of amine and carboxyl groups. The thermally crosslinked P(AA-co-AAm)/PEI coatings exhibit a stable low friction coefficient (approximately 0.022) and exceptionally low wear volume, with a 93.8% and 92.6% reduction, respectively, in comparison to the pristine Ti6Al4V. These thermally crosslinked P(AA-co-AAm)/PEI hydrogel coatings exhibit excellent lubrication and anti-wear properties, providing a strategy for developing novel lubricating coatings in the biomedical field.

Jiawen Li,Huali Jin,Min Wei,Wenjie Ren,Jinshui Wang,Yurong Zhang,Ligen Wu,Baoshan He

In this work, a sensitive dual mode competitive electrochemical immunosensor based on differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) response modes for quantitative determination of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was successfully established. According to diethylenetriamine (DETA) assisted hydrothermal strategy, a novel N-doped graphene/CoSe 2 nanobelt composite was prepared. Afterwards, PEI functionalized NG-CoSe 2 and gold nanowires (AuNWs) were further compounded as a preliminary signal amplification platform for immunosensor. Thionine (Thi)-loaded [email protected] and secondary antibody (Ab 2 ) connected as a signal label. The immobilized coating antigen DBP-BSA and the DBP compete for limited antibody binding sites. The concentration of DBP can be determined by DPV detect the Thi signal loaded on the [email protected] 2 label. It can also be determined by SWV mode to detect the current generated by the reaction system of H 2 O 2 and o-phenylenediamine (o-PD) catalyzed by [email protected] with peroxidase like properties. Under optimum conditions, the linear ranges of the DPV and SWV modes were 1 pg mL −1 ∼1 μg mL −1 . And LOD were 0.486 pg mL -1 (DPV) and 0.711 pg mL -1 (SWV), respectively. Besides, it exhibited outstanding selectivity, reproducibility, stability and can be used for sensitive detection of DBP in real samples.

Introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) into the electrospun fibrous membranes containing diiron mimics of [FeFe]-hydrogenase: Membrane electrodes and their electrocatalysis on proton reduction in aqueous media

Diyang Zhu,Zhiyin Xiao,Xiaoming Liu

A number of fibrous membranes with cellulose acetate as a matrix and functionalised with diiron mimics of the diiron subunit of [FeFe]-hydrogenase were prepared by electrospinning technique . Four mimics, [Fe 2 (μ-edt) (CO) 6 ] ( 1 ), [Fe 2 {μ-SCH 2 CH(CH 2 OH)S}(CO) 6 ] ( 2 ), [Fe 2 {(μ-S) 2 (C 6 O 2 H 4 )}(CO) 6 ] ( 3 ) and [Fe 2 {μ-SCH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 (OH)} 2 (CO) 6 ] ( 4 ), bearing 0, 1, 2 and 4 hydroxyl group(s) were incorporated into the electrospun fibrous membranes ( EFM s). To improve the conductivity of the EFM s, graphene oxide was chemically gratified onto cellulose acetate. The resultant EFM s membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopic, thermogravimetric and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The electrochemical behaviours and electrocatalytic performance on proton reduction of the membrane electrodes assembled from the EFM s showed in aqueous media that the membrane ( M2 ) containing complex 2 is most durable and exhibited the best catalytic performance. To the electrospinning system containing complex 2 was further doped with basic polymer PEI to enhance tentatively proton transfer during the electrocatalysis of proton reduction. Our results showed that the presence of PEI in the EFM s did improve the electrocatalytic performance of proton reduction, presumably due to the enhancement in proton transfer in the catalysis.

TPU/PEI nanofibers for the efficient removal of PFOA and its analogs: Effect of pH, humic acid and co-existing ions, mechanism, and regenerative effects

Jiaoxia Sun,Xueting Jiang,Hong Xiang,Xi Wang,Xue Luo,Jiang Fu,Jianxin Fan

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its analogs, such as perfluorocaproic acid (PFHxA), perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA), and perfluoro(2-methyl-3-oxahexanoic) acid (GenX), present environmental contamination concerns due to their toxicity. To addressing this, in this study, we have explored the utility of thermoplastic polyurethane/polyethyleneimine (TPU/PEI) nanofibers , synthesized via electrospinning, for the efficient removal of PFOA and its analogs from aqueous solutions. Combining the positively charged amino groups of PEI and hydrophobicity of TPU potentially enhances adsorption. Further, the TPU/PEI nanofibers exhibit a distinctive nano-phase separation morphology, creating abundant adsorption sites conducive to PFAS binding. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that TPU/PEI nanofibers possess notable adsorption capacities for PFOA and its analogs. The observed adsorption capacities were ranked as follows: PFOA (0.931 mmol/g) > PFHxA (0.872 mmol/g) > PFBA (0.827 mmol/g) > GenX (0.771 mmol/g), thus showing a correlation with their respective octanol–water partition coefficient (K ow ) values. Both inorganic ions and organic matter exerted more pronounced adverse effects on the adsorption of PFBA and GenX than on those of PFOA and PFHxA. This observation can be linked to competitive adsorption with PFAS. Impressively, the TPU/PEI nanofibers maintained a high removal efficiency across multiple regeneration cycles, with more than 95 % adsorption capacity retained after five cycles. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the inaugural demonstration of utilizing a TPU and PEI blend for remediation of both long-chain and short-chain PFAS in highly polluted wastewater, positioning it as a promising, accessible material for such applications.

Scalable all-polymer dielectric films with aligned structures for high-temperature energy storage applications

Xin Zhen,Jian Wang,Xinhui Li,Yanda Jiang,Zhi Li,Zhonghui Shen,Xin Zhang

The pursuit of high-temperature dielectric polymers with superior energy density is a critical objective in the development of advanced electronic and electrical systems. However, existing polymers capable of operating at elevated temperatures often suffer from a low dielectric constant and excessive conduction loss. Herein, we present an all-polymer composite with exceptional high-temperature energy storage performance, wherein polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers are precisely aligned within a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. The PEI/PVDF composites exhibit an enhanced dielectric constant compared to PEI due to the intrinsically higher dielectric constant of the PVDF component and interface effects between PEI and PVDF components. Moreover, the alignment of PVDF nanofibers achieves a perpendicular orientation to the applied electric field, contributing to enhanced breakdown strength. The resultant PEI/PVDF composites with optimized content and diameter of PVDF nanofibers in the PEI matrix achieve a discharge energy density of 9.39 J cm−3 at 150 °C with the energy efficiency (η) exceeding 90%. This research presents a simple, economical, and scalable method for producing dielectric polymer films with excellent energy storage capacity at high temperatures.
