In this work, a temperature-regulating and antimicrobial–antioxidant fiber membrane was fabricated using coaxial electrospinning technology. The tea tree oil (TTO) emulsion used as the core solution, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the shell solution for coaxial electrospinning, has been demonstrated. Compared with the original PVA fibers, the average diameter of the fibers is increased after coaxial electrospinning, and the diameter increases with the core flow rate. The diameters corresponding to core flow rates of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mL/h are 561, 597, and 849 nm, respectively. Via in vitro release experiment demonstrated that the quantity of TTO released from the composite membrane increased with the elevation of temperature. The inclusions TTO and polyethylene glycol give the film excellent antibacterial–antioxidant properties and a delayed thermal response. More intriguingly, core–shell fiber membranes containing TTO in the core part are effective in slowing down the formation of oxidation spots on the surface of banana compared with pure PVA membranes. Seven days after wrapping bananas with different membranes, the surface of banana in pure PVA film was full of oxidized spots, whereas banana in PVA core–shell fibers showed only one obvious spot.

In cryopreservation of biological samples such as cells, the formation, growth and recrystallization of ice crystals can cause fatal mechanical damage to cells. Therefore, how to effectively regulate and inhibit ice crystals, reduce freezing damage, and improve cryopreservation efficiency is a critical scientific problem that needs to be addressed in the current cryopreservation field. In this paper, a series of PVA grafted single-layer graphite oxide (PVA-g-GO nanocomposites) with different degrees of polymerization and different proportions was ingeniously engineered by a one-step esterification reaction method to study their ice crystal control effect. The obtained PVA 17 -g-GO nanocomposite could effectively reduce the ice crystal size during the recrystallization process at low concentration by adsorption and lattice matching. The nanocomposite with a 10:1 mass ratio of PVA and GO exhibited the best ice control effect, which could reduce the ice crystal size to only 17 % of that of pure water. Surprisingly, the modification of PVA significantly enhanced the absorption value of GO in Visible and Near-Infrared light (380 nm–980 nm), giving it excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (39.7 %), accelerating ice thawing rate, and thus synergistically reducing the mechanical damage caused by ice recrystallization. Finally, using the prepared PVA 17 -g-GO as cryoprotectants (CPA), the cryopreservation experiments on Hela cells and A549 cells demonstrated that this material at low concentration of 20 μg/ml could achieve high cell survival efficiency (>85 %). The preparation and development of this efficient ice-recrystallization-inhibiting nanomaterial with bidirectional synergy can provide new ideas and methods for the safety and progress of current cryopreservation technology.

The combination of nanopores and noble metal nanoparticles has been the focus of research in recent years, and their synergistic effect enabled the substrate exhibit excellent SERS property. In this paper, the array porous silicon structures embedded with gold nanoparticles have been prepared by using the polystyrene (PS) microsphere template assisted gold annealing process and metal assisted chemical etching techniques (AuNPs@nanopore). Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin film was introduced as a molecular adsorption layer to be spin coated on the surface and formed composite structure (AuNPs@nanopore @PVA) to enrich more detection molecules. Through the SERS analysis of different depths of gold nanoparticles by Rhodamine 6G (R6G) probe molecules, the optimal etching time, that is, the optimal depth that gold nanoparticles should be in, was determined. Under the etching time of 2 min, the AuNPs@nanopore @PVA structure base with pore depth of 245 nm and diameter of gold nanoparticles of 181 nm showed high sensitivity, high uniformity and the best SERS property. It can realize the low concentration detection of 10 −10 mol/L R6G molecule and 10 −11 mol/L methylene blue (MB) molecule, and the enhancement factor is up to 1.20 × 10 7 . The substrate can also be used to detect the pesticide thiabendazole molecule, the detection limit of 10 −8 mol/L.

Electrospinning polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous membranes have gained increased attention for their uses as separators for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high porosity and excellent electrolyte wettability, but their poor mechanical and thermal properties have limited their further development. In this work, a crosslinked PVA composite separator (PVA/CA-H) was first prepared via the electrospinning of the PVA and citric acid (CA) mixed solution and then the heating of the nanofibrous membrane, and the effects of the amount of CA on the structure and performance of the PVA/CA-H separator were investigated. The hydroxyl group of PVA and the carboxyl group of CA were crosslinked under the heat treatment, resulting in a slight reduction in the porosity and pore size of the composite separator compared to pure PVA, and to compensate for this issue, the mechanical strengths, as well as the thermal dimensional stability of the PVA/CA-H separator, were significantly improved. Meanwhile, the PVA/CA-H separator exhibited good electrolyte uptake (158.1%) and high ionic conductivity (1.63 mS cm−1), and, thus, the battery assembled with the PVA/CA-H separator exhibited a capacity retention of 96.3% after 150 cycles at 1 C. These features mean that the crosslinked PVA composite separator can be considered as a prospective high-safety and high-performance separator for LIBs.Keywords:polyvinyl alcohol;crosslinking;separator;mechanical properties;lithium-ion batteries

Membrane fouling is a challenging problem that negatively affects the membrane performance. To suppress the fouling, in this work, a series of bipyridine-containing crosslinked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) (denoted as PVA-Bpy-CHO-X) have been prepared, where poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is the membrane substrate and Bpy-CHO with a rigid structure is the crosslinker. The optimized PVA-Bpy-CHO-0.40 possesses an appropriate swelling ratio (11.3%), low surface area resistance (3.21 Ω·cm2), and enhanced hydrophilicity (water contact angle: 76.4°). Especially, PVA-Bpy-CHO-0.40 also exhibits a superior NaCl removal ratio of 85.16 ± 0.9% within 210 min, which is higher than that of commercial AEM-Type-II (84.46 ± 0.8%). As for the antifouling performance of AEMs, the electrodialysis (ED) stack was fed with a solution containing 0.05 M NaCl (aq.) and contaminant model of 0.8 g·L–1 SDBS. The antifouling potential is evaluated by transition time, which is defined as the time that passes when voltage across the membrane (ΔE) presents a sharp rise for the increased surface area resistance when the fouling occurs. As a result, PVA-Bpy-CHO-0.40 shows a longer transition time of 750 min relative to AEM-Type-II (620 min), suggesting its superior antifouling performance and the potential to be a good candidate for ED in organic foulant systems.

The rapid and effective fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with good mechanical properties is of great significance yet remains a huge challenge. The preparation of PVA hydrogels via the conventional cyclic freeze–thaw method is intricate and time-intensive. In this study, a pioneering approach involving the utilization of low-temperature continuous freezing is introduced to produce a novel PVA-ethylene glycol (EG) gel. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirm that with the assistance of EG, PVA molecular chains can self-assemble to generate an abundance of microcrystalline domains at low temperatures, thus improving the mechanical properties of PVA-EG gel. Remarkably, when the mass ratio of H2O/EG is 4:6, the gel’s maximum tensile strength can reach 2.5 MPa, which is much higher than that of PVA gels prepared via the freeze–thaw method. The preparation process of PVA-EG gel is simple, and its properties are excellent, which will promote the wide application of PVA tough gel in many fields. Keywords:PVA;hydrogel;mechanical properties;segment self-assembly;freeze–thaw

Interfacial defect caused by the poor dispersibility of filler particles has been a major obstacle in the application of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Improving the fillers dispersibility is an effective approach to improve the separation performance. In this work, for the purpose of preparing defect-free MMMs, a pre-crosslinking strategy was proposed to covalently connect the fillers to the polymer. Such covalently connection realized by the reaction between the additional carboxyl group of the MOF-801 and the hydroxyl group of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The newly reacted ester group, confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), was identified as a bridge between MOF-801 and PVA. This bridge provides a strong bond between the two and avoids agglomeration between the MOF particles. The uniform distribution of Zr elements observed in the Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) mapping further confirms that the MOF-801 particles are well dispersed in the MMMs. The prepared membranes exhibited a superior water flux of 3354 g m −2 h −1 for 90 wt % ethanol/water separation at 343 K and excellent stability in 92 h experiment. This study provides an inspiration for mitigating excessive particle agglomeration in MMMs.

The water transport in hydrogel has been proven to be critical for water evaporation, water treatment and moisture-wicking. However, confined with the regulation of pore structure , challenges remain in constructing fast water transport channels especially in harsh water environment. Herein, we demonstrate a simple strategy for fabrication of fast water transport carbon nanotube/poly (vinyl alcohol) (CNT/PVA) hydrogels via efficiently interior infiltration and decoration of CNT cellular structures with PVA. The CNT/PVA double-network structures favor the generation of hierarchical micro/nanochannels and strong capillary forces , leading to water transport throughout the hydrogel up to ~15.8 g g −1 s −1 , recorded highest among reported hydrogels. The as-formed elastic hybrid hydrogels present a reversible absorbing/shrinking behavior, an excellent capacity in water absorption (216 g g −1 ), and high adaptability in salty water, acid and alkaline solutions as well as boiling water. Moreover, a multifunctional sport headband has been designed based on fast water transport and conductive framework, which can perform fantabulous moisture-wicking and health monitor. This work proposes a new route for developing fast water transport hydrogels towards versatile flexible electronic devices and multifunctional sport management systems.

The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is the key to assembling high-performance solid-state supercapacitors (SSCs). The commercial poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) GPE has developed a reputation due to low ionic conductivity endowed by its high crystallinity and poor water retention capacity. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations first revealed that the high crystallinity of PVA can be greatly disrupted by forming hydrogen bonds with natural agarose macromolecules. The hydrogen bond interpenetrated three-dimensional agarose/PVA network offers high water retention and large amounts of channels for movement of Li+ on hydroxyl oxygen atoms. So, an optimized formation of the Li–O coordinate bond (gLi–O(r) = 8.78) and improved diffusion coefficient of Li+ (DLi+) (71 × 10–6 cm2 s–1) were obtained in the agarose/PVA model. When assembled into SSCs, agarose/PVA-GPE with 2 M LiOAc (AP-GPE) exhibits an outstanding specific capacitance (697.22 mF cm–2 at 5 mA cm–2). The high water retention of agarose and large amounts of −OH groups in the agarose macromolecular can generate H2O by dehydration reaction, reducing the flammability of PVA and greatly enhancing the safety of SSCs.

Carbon nitride has captured much attention of researchers since it was discovered, while few studies have focused on exploring the thermal conduction applications. In this paper, carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) could be simultaneously functionalized during the process of exfoliation. FTIR tests proved that hydrogen bonds were constructed between PVA matrix and CNNS, at the same time, superior dispersion were also observed from SEM characterizations. In this case, significantly improved compatibility at the interfaces of them could be achieved without additional modifications. The maximum in-plane thermal conductivity of CNNS/PVA composites was enhanced to 2.7 W m −1 K −1 with low CNNS content (7.5 wt%), resulting in a sharp enhancement (785%) in comparison with that of pure PVA film (0.305 W m −1 K −1 ). More importantly, the as-prepared CNNS/PVA composite (at 7.5 wt% CNNS content) could even be comparable to traditional highly thermally conductive polymer composites (Graphene, Boron Nitride, Mxene, etc., were used as fillers) in terms of similar conditions. Meanwhile, the incorporation of 7.5 wt% CNNS PVA composites also showed excellent mechanical properties and electrical insulation, where the tensile strength, elongation at break, and volume resistivity reached up to 30.578 Mpa, 193.089%, 3.34 × 10 11 Ω·cm respectively. These multifunctional features further indicate that CNNS/PVA composites possess the great potential for thermal management. Therefore, this work can provide effective references to prepare highly thermally conductive polymer composites by constructing in-situ functionalized CNNS, and expands its application as well.

With the aim of capturing uranium from water mediums phosphate functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) (PVA/PAA) nanofiber (PVA/PAA-PO 4 ) was firstly fabricated using the electrospinning method of fast process and high efficiency. The as-prepared PVA/PAA-PO 4 showed excellent water stability and tensile strength besides competitive uranium uptake capacity of 277.78 mg/g. Phosphate played a vital role in the structure of PVA/PAA-PO 4 for the attractive uranium uptake capacity. PVA/PAA-PO 4 was characterized by SEM, XPS, FT-IR and omnipotence machine. The effects of pH, ionic strength, oscillation time, initial uranium concentration and temperature on the uranium adsorption with PVA/PAA-PO 4 were studied. The elution with different kinds of acids was conducted and the reusability through the adsorption-desorption cycle test was carried out. The work provided a promising candidate for uranium separation from aqueous solution.

Chitin is a biobased and renewable biopolymer which consistents with the green and sustainable development. However, the strong inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interactions of chitin endow it with very poor solubility and processability, which extremely limit its broad application. In this work, a simple “building block reorganization” strategy has been developed to prepare chitin-based composite film with a “brick-and-mortar” structure. After successively experiencing salt-induced “preaggregation” and alkali-induced “hydrogen bonds remolding”, the mixture of chitin nanowhiskers (ChNWs) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was processed into high strength and transparent composite film with ChNWs as “bricks” and PVA as “mortar”. The hydrogen-bond remolding process had successfully promoted the interactions between ChNWs and PVA, and optimized the microscopic “brick-and-mortar” structure, therefore resulting in much improved mechanical properties, water resistance, and barrier properties of the composite films. Moreover, the whole process for preparing the composite films was carried out in aqueous medium at room temperature, which makes it a promising candidate for green processing of natural polysaccharide.
