Coupling high-capacity silicon-based anode materials with ternary cathode materials is currently the most effective strategy to improve the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. However, the unstable interfaces between both electrodes and electrolyte impede this process. To address this issue, multifunctional additives incorporating Si O bonds have been widely adopted to bolster the stability of the solid/cathode electrolyte interface (SEI/CEI). Nevertheless, there is scanty research regarding the impact of the quantity and variety of functional groups within these multifunctional additives, which poses challenges for the efficient selection of additives and the tailoring of SEI/CEI. In this study, a series of multifunctional additives with Si O bonds were scrutinized, evaluating their chemical characteristics alongside their effects on the structural durability, interface properties, and electrochemical performance of silicon anodes. The results revealed that differences in molecular structure significantly affect their capacity to suppress LiPF 6 hydrolysis by eliminating HF/H 2 O through Si O bonds, with this capability being inversely correlated with the number of Si O bonds present. Moreover, excessive Si O bonds resulted in elevated molecular weight, increased internal resistance, and diminished cell longevity. Notably, additives containing aromatic rings, -CF 3 and C N groups enhanced the SEI robustness and extended the cycle life of silicon anodes. Further investigations demonstrated that this type of additive significantly improves the CEI stability of the NCM622 cathode. Consequently, it enabled an nSi║NCM622 full cell to retain 89.4 % of its capacity after 100 cycles at 1.0C. This study provides valuable insights into the strategic selection and effective utilization of multifunctional additives containing Si O bonds in silicon-based lithium-ion batteries.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Si-Ni-San (SNS), a traditional Chinese medicinal formula derived from Treatise on Febrile Diseases , is considered effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases based upon thousands of years of clinical practice. However, the bioactive ingredients and underlying mechanisms are still unclear and need further investigation. Aim of the study This study aimed to evaluate the effect, explore the bioactive ingredients and the underlying mechanisms of SNS in ameliorating ulcerative colitis (UC) and associated liver injury in dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced mouse colitis models. Materials and methods The effect of SNS (1.5, 3, 6 g/kg) on 3% DSS-induced acute murine colitis was evaluated by disease activity index (DAI), colon length, inflammatory cytokines, hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining, tight junction proteins expression, ALT, AST, and oxidative stress indicators. HPLC-ESI-IT/TOF MS was used to analyze the chemical components of SNS and the main xenobiotics in the colon of UC mice after oral administration of SNS. Network pharmacological study was then conducted based on the main xenobiotics. Flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry techniques were used to demonstrate the inhibitory effect of SNS on Th17 cells differentiation and the amelioration of Th17/Treg cell imbalance. LC-MS/MS, Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and western blotting techniques were performed to investigate the oxysterol-Liver X receptor (LXRs) signaling activity in colon. Targeted bile acids metabolomics was conducted to reveal the change of the two major pathways of bile acid synthesis in the liver, and the expression of key metabolic enzymes of bile acids synthesis was characterized by RT-qPCR and western blotting techniques. Results SNS (1.5, 3, 6 g/kg) decreased the DAI scores, protected intestinal mucosa barrier, suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, improved hepatic and splenic enlargement and alleviated liver injury in a dose-dependent manner. A total of 22 components were identified in the colon of SNS (6 g/kg) treated colitis mice, and the top 10 components ranked by relative content were regarded as the potential effective chemical components of SNS, and used to conduct network pharmacology research. The efficacy of SNS was mediated by a reduction of Th17 cell differentiation, restoration of Th17/Treg cell homeostasis in the colon and spleen, and the experimental results were consistent with our hypothesis and the biological mechanism predicted by network pharmacology. Mechanistically, SNS regulated the concentration of 25-OHC and 27-OHC by up-regulated CH25H, CYP27A1 protein expression in colon, thus affected the expression and activity of LXR, ultimately impacted Th17 differentiation and Th17/Treg balance. It was also found that SNS repressed the increase of hepatic cholesterol and reversed the shift of BA synthesis to the acidic pathway in UC mice, which decreased the proportion of non-12-OH BAs in total bile acids (TBAs) and further ameliorated colitis and concomitant liver injury. Conclusions This study set the stage for considering SNS as a multi-organ benefited anti-colitis prescription based on the significant effect of ameliorating intestinal and liver damage, and revealed that derivatives of cholesterol, namely oxysterols and bile acids, were closely involved in the mechanism of SNS anti-colitis effect.

Polymer binders possess significant potential in alleviating the volume expansion issues of silicon-based anodes, yet remain challenging due to insufficient interfacial interactions with individual components (Si, C, and Cu) of the anode. Herein, we report the synthesis of a stable three-dimensional network structure of the PAA-PEA (polyacrylic acid-polyether amines) polymer binder through intermolecular physicochemical dual cross-linking. By incorporating polar functional groups, the binder molecules not only form strong C–O–Si, N–Si, O=C–O–C, and O=C–O–Cu covalent bonds but also enhance non-covalent interactions with Si, C, and Cu, thereby improving adhesion between the binder and each interface of the anode. Furthermore, weak hydrogen bonds, acting as “sacrificial bonds”, dissipate energy and disperse accumulated stress, improving the material flexibility. Due to the high mechanical stability of the framework, which combines both rigidity and flexibility and the coupling effect at the three interfaces, the movement and separation of electrode components are effectively restrained, significantly enhancing the cycling stability of silicon-graphite anodes. The PAA-PEA 2000 electrode exhibits a capacity retention of 78% after 500 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 . This work provides insights into the mechanism of binders and guides the design of polymer binders for high-performance Si-based electrodes.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a leading technology for wastewater/water treatment and resource recovery. The formation of Si–Al complex scale significantly impairs the performance of RO systems. Due to the diverse forms of silica and aluminum species, the scaling process involves both homogeneous and heterogeneous mechanisms, presenting substantial challenges in understanding Si–Al scale formation. Herein, we investigated the scaling mechanism of Si–Al complexes in RO systems under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions, focusing on Si–Al interactions in solution and their deposition behavior on membrane surfaces. We found that Si–Al interactions in solution did not directly determine their fouling behavior on RO membranes. In acidic conditions, silicic acid and aluminum species (i.e., Al 3+ ) remained stable in solution but underwent heterogenous polymerization on the membrane surface. The electrostatic shielding and the bridging effects of Al 3+ facilitated the formation of a dense and thick Si–Al complex layer. Under neutral and alkaline conditions, the Si–Al complex primarily underwent homogenous polymerization before depositing on the membrane surface, due to the adsorption of silicic acid by polymeric aluminum hydroxide. The electrostatic repulsion between the Si–Al complex and the membrane resulted in minimal scaling. This work offers comprehensive insights into the pH-dependent scaling behavior of Si–Al complexes in RO processes, providing a theoretical foundation for developing effective scaling control strategies.

The photo-assisted electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) toward CO stands as a highly promising pathway for addressing environmental challenges and produces valuable chemicals. In this study, a novel pl-Si/Ag/Pc electrode was developed with the surface enveloped by an amorphous phthalocyanine overlayer. The pl-Si/Ag/Pc electrode has gained recognition as a catalyst of exceptional quality, displaying superior activity, selectivity toward CO, and stability. A synergistic mechanism has been revealed from experimental results that Ag served as active centers for CO 2 RR, Pc facilitated CO 2 adsorption and suppressed the competing HER reaction. Functionalizing the surface of electrode with Pc enhanced the CO selectivity (FE CO at 90.8 % under −1.5 V vs RHE) during the CO 2 RR process and reduced the cost in following product separation procedures. This study presents an uncomplicated yet effective approach for formulating durable and discerning electrocatalysts dedicated to the utilization of CO 2 .

Silicon (Si)-based anode materials have been regarded as a viable alternative to replace traditional graphite owing to its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the industrial production of Si nanoparticles (Si NPs) is hindered by low tap density and inferior areal capacity. Here, the hard carbon supported Si NPs are encapsulated by soft carbon and Al 2 O 3 to fabricate HC@Si@SC@A sample for high performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Micrometer-sized HC serves as size regulator for Si NPs and SC serves to improve electric conductivity and suppress volume changes. With the existence of Al 2 O 3 , a thin and inorganic components-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has formed, greatly maintaining the stability of electrode during cycling. Therefore, the HC@Si@SC@A anode delivers an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 14.5 mAh cm −2 at 0.2 A g −1 . It can show excellent performance as an anode of full cells with the NCM811 as the cathode material.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful fingerprint spectroscopic technique capable of detecting trace molecules, which finds extensive application potential in diverse fields. The SERS substrates with excellent Raman signal enhancement, scalability in large-scale fabrication, and long-term stability is of significant scientific interest and practical value. Herein, we report a hybrid SERS substrate, namely tip-Si@MoSxOy, which integrates a periodic tip-patterned Si metasurface with MoSxOy semiconductor nanostructures, to develop novel noble-metal-free SERS substrate with sensitive molecule detection performance. The engineered periodic Si metasurface enables broadband matrix resonance by coupling with incident light, significanlty amplifying the localized near-field intensity at the inter-element nanogap regions. Theoretical calculations show that the maximum E-field enhancement can be up to 511 times. Meanwhile, the MoSxOy semiconductor leads to modification of the the polarization of probe molecules due to the charge-transfer interactions enabling chemical mechanism SERS effect. These combined effects make the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G) at concentrations as low as 10-9 M and enhancement factor as high as 107. Moreover, the hybrid substrate exhibits superior antioxidation properties, eliminating the requirement of inert storage environments necessary for traditional noble-metal-based SERS substrates. Also, the MoSxOy semiconductor nanosructures are covalently bonded to the metasurface, ensuring structural stability without the need for post-transfer processes. Therefore, our work provides a novel approach to develop hybrid substrates with improved SERS performance, which is readily achievable and is expected to attract more research enthusiasm in the future.

Spent nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are a significant secondary resource for recovering rare earth elements (REEs), particularly lanthanum (La). However, extracting La from the La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag generated during pyrometallurgical recycling remains a major challenge. This study proposes a novel approach to address this issue by synergistically extracting La from La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag while simultaneously upgrading metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si, 99.2%) to high-purity Si (99.991%). The process begins with the extraction of La from the La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag using MG-Si as a reductant, yielding a useful Si-La alloy. This is followed by a three-stage leaching process to further separate the Si-La alloy and purify the Si powder. In the primary leaching stage, the Si-La alloy powder is separated into a La-containing acidic solution and residual Si powder using HCl solution. In the secondary leaching stage, Fe impurities in the residual Si powder are removed using a mixed acids solution of HF and HCl. In the tertiary leaching stage, the Si powder is further purified to 99.991% using HCl. Finally, the La ions in the La-containing acidic solution are selectively precipitated using hydrofluoric acid (HF) and ammonia (NH 3 ·H 2 O), respectively, resulting in high-purity LaF 3 (96.2%) and LaOCl (99.4%). This new method simultaneously recovers La from La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag and enhances Si purity from 99.2 to 99.991%.

As a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), silicon (Si) has been studied due to its high specific capacity. However, significant volume change during charge-discharge process has seriously impeded its practical application. Compounding with carbon is one of the methods to solve this problem. In this paper, biomass carbon is prepared by high temperature carbonization of Chinese rose petals. Different mass ratios of Si nanoparticles are embedded in the biomass carbon to produce C@Si composites. The as-prepared C@Si composites are assembled into LIBs to investigate their electrochemical performance. As an anode material for LIBs, the manufactured C@Si composite material (Si-25 wt%) manifests a stable cycling performance (524 mAh•g −1 at 0.1 A•g −1 after 100 cycles), a long cycle life (581 mAh•g −1 at 1 A•g −1 after 400 cycles) and excellent rate capability. And its initial coulombic efficiency at the current density of 1 A•g −1 (99.62 %) is much larger than that of pure nano-Si (29.45 %). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that the C@Si composite materials can behave as an ideal capacitor. This study reveals the possibility of changing flower petals to carbon material and the potential applications in the field of LIBs.

Silicon–air (Si–air) batteries have received significant attention owing to their high theoretical energy density and safety profile. However, the actual energy density of the Si–air battery remains significantly lower than the theoretical value, primarily due to corrosion issues and passivation. This study used various metal–organic framework (MOF) materials, such as MIL-53(Al), MIL-88(Fe), and MIL-101(Cr), to modify Si anodes. The MOFs were fabricated to have different morphologies, particle sizes, and pore sizes by altering their central metal nodes and ligands. This approach aimed to modulate the adsorption behavior of H 2 O, SiO 2 , and OH − , thereby mitigating corrosion and passivation reactions. Under a constant current of 150 μA, Si–air batteries with MIL-53(Al)@Si, MIL-88(Fe)@Si, and MIL-101(Cr)@Si as anodes demonstrated lifetimes of 293, 412, and 336 h, respectively, surpassing the 276 h observed with pristine silicon anodes. Among these composite anodes, MIL-88(Fe)@Si displayed the best performance due to its superior hydrophobicity and optimal pore size, which enhance OH − migration. This study offers a promising strategy for enhancing Si–air battery performance by developing an anodic protective layer with selective screening properties.

A full cell via pairing high-capacity silicon anode with high-voltage NMC cathode (Li(Ni 0.83 Co 0.12 Mn 0.05 )O 2 ) holds great promise as a high-energy battery system for practical applications. Nevertheless, this potential has been hindered by challenges in terms of the pulverization of Si particles, unstable electrode/electrolyte interface, and severe dissolution of transition metals at high voltage. Herein, we present a novel high-voltage and weakly solvating electrolyte, consisted of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide in mixed solvent of diethyl carbonate and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, which effectively enables the remarkable cycling stability of both micron silicon anode (a high reversible capacity of 1667 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles) and Ni-rich cathode (a notable capacity retention of 83% after 140 cycles at an ultrahigh cut-off voltage of 4.9 V). It is revealed that the tailored electrolyte leads to the formation of a robust and reinforced concrete-like solid electrolyte interphase, characterized by a distinctive vertical side-by-side columnar structure comprised of LiF and sulfide on the micro-silicon anode. Meanwhile, a uniform and thin cathode-electrolyte interphase is observed on the surface of NMC particles when cycled in the designed electrolyte. Furthermore, coupled with high-capacity micro-Si and high-voltage NMC, this designed electrolyte endows a remarkable full-cell with high energy density (475 Wh kg −1 ), excellent rate capability, and high-voltage cycling stability. This research contributes a pioneering approach to enabling the utilization of micron-sized silicon anodes and Ni-rich cathodes for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

This study contributes to advancing research in aluminium alloys employed as fuels for thermites (pyrotechnic compositions formed of metal and metal oxide powders). Aluminium alloys possess certain potential in regulating energy release and enhancing combustion efficiency; in order to explore better formulations for the aluminium alloy fuel thermite, PVDF-coated Al–Si samples with different proportions were prepared here by using the electrostatic spraying method. In this study, we are primarily addressing the energy release limitation problems which are imposed by the oxide layer formation during the combustion of aluminium–silicon alloy powders in air and explore the optimal formulation of aluminium–silicon fuel combined with fluoropolymer oxidants. Leveraging advanced electrostatic spraying technology, various PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-coated Al–Si samples (Al–Si@PVDF) were successfully synthesized. Morphological characterization confirmed the complete encapsulation of Al–Si alloy powders by PVDF, yielding spherical core–shell structures with uniform elemental distribution and favourable microstructural characteristics. Further, by thermal analysis and calorimetry investigation, a two-stage reaction between Al–Si and PVDF was unveiled: an initial PVDF decomposition phase followed by an ignition reaction phase. To comprehensively evaluate the combustion performance of samples with varying proportions, high-speed and infrared cameras were employed for precise observations, enabling a deep dive into the combustion parameters and their disparities under two distinct spatial conditions. Through these combustion performance experiments and post-combustion product analysis, we deduced the micro-combustion process mechanism of Al–Si@PVDF. This works not only that it provides a scientific basis for optimizing the formulation of aluminium–silicon fuels and fluoropolymer oxidants, but also holds positive implications for advancing research and development in aluminium alloy-based metastable intermolecular composites. Last but not least, besides the high combustion rates, low ignition temperatures, stable combustion, and strong exothermic performance were obtained for these thermite composite materials.
