NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and La-, Mo- or W-doped NiFe-LDH microparticles (NiFeX-LDH, X = La, Mo, W) were synthesized via the co-precipitation method. Their adsorption characteristics were evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (MO) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). The effects of the metal ion doping type, doping concentration (0–3at%), pH and temperature on the MO adsorption properties were systematically studied. The results show that W-doped NiFe-LDH exhibits superior MO removal capacity compared to undoped or La- or Mo-doped NiFe-LDH at the same 1at% doping level, which is attributed to the increased layer charge density and strong affinity for the π-electron systems of MO molecules. The NiFeW-LDH-1at% sample demonstrated the best MO adsorption performance within the W-doping range of 0–3at%, achieving a superior adsorption capability of 666.67 mg/g with a significantly shorter equilibrium time (10–120 min) compared to the similar LDH. NiFeW-LDH-1at% showed promising reusability, with its adsorption efficiency remaining 78.3% of its initial level after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The MO uptake onto NiFeX-LDH was attributed to the combined effect of anion exchange and the attraction of layer charge. In addition, the adsorption of NiFeW-LDH-1at% matched well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a monolayer and chemical adsorption. Furthermore, NiFeW-LDH-1at% effectively adsorbed of Cr2O72−in the aqueous solution, revealing that W doping significantly enhances Cr(VI) removal performance. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity onto NiFeW-LDH-1at% reached 63.25 mg/g, which was notably higher than that of the pristine NiFe-LDH adsorbent (53.56 mg/g). Overall, the W-doped NiFe-LDH material, as a low-cost and highly efficient adsorbent, shows great potential for wastewater treatment application.

The development of an efficient yet cost-effective non-precious electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water and seawater systems remains a formidable obstacle to the large-scale production of hydrogen energy, stemming from the sluggish kinetics of electron transfer reactions during the HER process. In this article, an amorphous Co-P-W electrocatalyst on nickel foam is prepared using a brief cyclic voltammetry (CV) electrodeposition method. The optimized Co-P-W electrocatalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER, which only requires overpotentials of 59 and 143 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline water (1.0 M KOH) and alkaline seawater (1.0 M KOH + natural seawater), respectively, and remarkable stability and durability. The improved HER performance of the Co-P-W electrocatalyst is attributed to the introduction of W, which modulates the electronic structure of Co and P, optimizes the adsorption/dissociation of H 2 O, and reduces the charge transfer resistance of the Co-P electrocatalyst, thus improving the kinetics of the HER. Furthermore, the W-doping significantly enhances the hydrophilicity of the Co-P electrocatalyst, which favors rapid and thorough penetration of electrolytes into the electrocatalyst, facilitating the formation of a highly accessible reaction interface, ultimately resulting in excellent HER activity. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of designing an efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalyst to significantly boost HER efficiency for practical water electrolysis.

A novel series of samarium-activated orange-red emitting CaY 2 Sb 2 (ZnO 4 ) 3 (CYSZO) phosphors has been successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method. The phase purity, spectroscopy, and morphological properties of the phosphors have been extensively characterized. When excited at 407 nm, CYSZO:Sm 3+ samples exhibited a pronounced orange-red emission peak at 610 nm, this corresponding to the typical 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 7/2 both magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole transitions of Sm 3+ ions. The optimal doping concentration was established as 10 mol%. The quenching mechanism is attributed to the interaction of the nearest-neighbor ions. The prepared sample showed a remarkable internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 68.63 % and exceptional thermal stability at working temperature of the LEDs. As the Sm 3+ concentration increased, the decay time decreased correspondingly, ranging from 2.45 ms to 1.40 ms for concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 40 mol%. The phosphor materials exhibited high color purity, as evidenced by the Commission International de L'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates. The synthesized white light-emitting diode (w-LED) exhibited an impressive color rendering index (CRI) of 96 and a desirable correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5674 K. Furthermore, the CYSZO:10 mol%Sm 3+ @oleic acid phosphor-stained latent fingerprint (LFP) images show excellent visualization capabilities on various surfaces with high contrast and long-term stability. These results highlight the potential of CYSZO:Sm 3+ phosphors to serve as a promising orange-red material for w-LED applications and LFP detection.

A hollow heterojunction of W-Zr-MOF-NH 2 @TpTt-COF (WZT) was fabricated by combining etched W-Zr-MOF-NH 2 with TpTt-COF. WZT, synthesized through acid etching and hydrothermal methods, showed better tetracycline degradation than pure W-Zr-MOF-NH 2 and pure TpTt-COF due to its larger specific surface area and more active sites. The surface of WZT contains abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) that capture electrons, promoting the separation of photogenerated e - -h + pairs and increasing WZT’s photocatalytic activity. WZT (1:1, mass) showed 87% degradation of tetracycline under 300 W Xenon lamp irradiation. The results of cycling experiments demonstrated the high stability and reusability of WZT (1:1), making it feasible for production. The excellent photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by WZT (1:1) originates from the formation of heterojunctions and the presence of surface OVs, which reduces the strong photogenerated e - -h + complexation efficiency. Possible photocatalytic degradation mechanisms are proposed while demonstrating the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction in WZT, which aligned with the experimental results of electron spin resonance (ESR). The tetracycline oxidative decomposition process involves the participation of •OH, 1 O 2 , • O 2 - , e - , and h + as proven by ESR and radical trapping experiments. This work proposes a research idea to prepare high-performance photocatalysts with MOF@COF type, featuring OVs-rich and Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Two-dimensional MoSe 2 is a promising candidate for lithium-ion battery anodes. However, its conductivity and lithium storage volumetric effect still need to be optimized. In this work, W-doped MoSe 2 /rGO paper-like microspheres are successfully prepared through ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, achieving optimization at both the microstructure and mesostructure to enhance the lithium storage performance of the material. Firstly, by utilizing the similar two-dimensional structure between MoSe 2 and rGO, self-assembly is achieved through spray pyrolysis, resulting in a well-defined van der Waals heterostructure at the interface on the microscale, enhancing the electron and ion transfer capability of the composite. Secondly, the mesoscale paper-like microsphere morphology provides additional volume expansion buffering space. Moreover, W-doping not only increases the interlayer spacing of MoSe 2 (0.73 nm), thereby reducing the diffusion resistance of Li + , but also allow for the modulation of the energy band structure of the material. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that W-doped MoSe 2 /rGO exhibits the narrowest bandgap (0.892 eV). Therefore, the composite demonstrates excellent lithium storage performance, maintaining a specific capacity of 732.9 mAh·g −1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 1 A·g −1 . Graphical abstract

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires the development of a strong and efficient electrocatalyst due to its slow mechanism and high overpotential. Hence, we assembled POM and NiCo-ZIF-67 to obtain the amorphous hollow core-shell material NiCo-ZIF-67@POM (donated as NiCo-ZIF@POM) with high catalytic activity. NiCo-ZIF@POM (1:3) presents a low overpotential (η≈150 mV@10 mA cm-2), a small Tafel slope (100 mV dec-1), and great stability for OER in 1 M KOH solution. Theoretical calculations indicate that the excellent activity of NiCo-ZIF@POM might be attributed to the charge rearrangement due to the interaction between Co and W. In addition, the low electronegativity of P and the high oxidation state of W in POM could accelerate the rapid OH- transfer and induce the intermediates to adsorb on the Co-O-W bridge bond conformation, which improves the performance of the catalytic OER. This study provides a new idea for the secondary assembly of POM and MOF materials.

Developing high-performance and low-cost electrodes for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER, respectively) represents a pivotal challenge in the field of water electrolysis. Herein, W doped NiFe LDH nanosheets (NiFe-W x /NF) were immobilized on nickel foam (NF) through one-step corrosion engineering, which induced the coexistence of α-Ni(OH) 2 and β-Ni(OH) 2 . The doping of large atomic radius W influenced the growth of crystal planes of Ni(OH) 2 , promoting the formation of α-Ni(OH) 2 , which results in large layer spaces and neatly arranged nanosheets structure. The optimized NiFe-W 0.5 /NF catalyst require potentials of only 69 to attain 10 mA/cm 2 for HER, and require overpotentials of 269 mV to reach 100 mA/cm 2 current density for OER, respectively. The W 6+ with high oxidation state can withdraw neighboring electrons from Ni, altering the adsorption energy of hydrogen intermediates, which improves the Volmer step and electrical conductivity in HER. And the large layer space of α-Ni(OH) 2 in NiFe-W 0.5 /NF can be contributed to accelerating the formation of high valence γ-NiOOH, which can accelerate OER kinetics. In addition, the NiFe-W 0.5 /NF catalyst also provides an overall water splitting activity of 780 mA/cm 2 current density at a cell voltage of only 1.90 V, and remains highly stable for over 70 h at 100 mA/cm 2 , which makes it a bifunctional efficient catalyst for water electrolysis.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting is among the foremost methods to produce clean and green hydrogen from renewable sources. The practical use of the HER technology is however hindered by the high price and/or the relatively low efficiency of the currently used catalysts. Herein, we report a heterostructured W/W 2 C electrocatalyst featuring vertically stacked interfaces and embedded in N-doped porous graphitic carbon (denoted as W/W 2 C@N-PGC) as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the HER in a wide pH range. The catalyst synthesis, accomplished through a straightforward one-pot method, is both facile and highly efficient, involving freeze-drying a suspension of the starting materials followed by pyrolyzing the obtained dry gel. Density functional theory calculations revealed the crucial role of the W/W 2 C heterojunction in promoting the two key steps of the HER, viz. H OH bond scission and H 2 emission. Electrochemical data confirmed the excellent electrocatalytic capability of W/W 2 C@N-PGC toward the HER process in a wide pH range including alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes. In 1.0 M KOH, we measured a low overpotential of 102 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 ; a long-term stability (up to 24 h) was also realized. The data presented in this work highlight the importance of electrocatalysts with heterojunctions for the HER and the methodology presented in this work may be extended to other contemporary energy-related technologies such as CO 2 reduction, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may arise due to disruption of mucosal barriers as a result of dysregulation of the intestinal flora and excessive oxidative stress. The creation of nanomaterials with only microbiota-regulating effects often leads to inadequate therapeutic outcomes caused by the disruption of a healthy microbial balance and the emergence of tissue harm caused by excessive oxidative stress. This report describes the multifunctional activity of ultrasmall W-GA nanodots, which can precisely regulate the intestinal microbiome by inhibiting the abnormal expansion of Enterobacteriaceae during colitis and alleviating the damage caused by oxidative stress to the reconstructive microflora, ultimately restoring intestinal barrier function. W-GA nanodots have been synthesized through a simple coordination reaction and can be dispersed in various solvents in vitro , demonstrating favorable safety profiles in cells, significant clearance of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), and increased cell survival in models of oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Through oral or intravenous administration, the W-GA nanodots were shown to be highly safe when tested in vivo , and they effectively reduced colon damage in mice with DSS-induced colitis by restoring the integrity of the intestinal barrier. W-GA nanodots have enabled the integration of microflora reprogramming and RONS clearance, creating a potent therapeutic strategy for treating gut inflammation. Consequently, the development of W-GA nanodots represents a promising strategy for enhancing the formation and preservation of the intestinal barrier to treat IBDs by suppressing the growth of Enterobacteriaceae , a type of facultative anaerobic bacterium, and facilitating the effective removal of RONS. Ultimately, this leads to the restoration of the intestinal barrier's functionality. Statement of Significance An increasing number of nanoparticles are under development for treating inflammatory bowel disease. Although they can alleviate inflammation symptoms by regulating reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and microbiota, their understanding of the mechanism behind microbiota regulation is limited. This study synthesized W-GA nanodots using a straightforward one-pot synthesis method. Simple synthesis holds significant promise for clinical applications, as it encompasses multiple nanoenzyme functions and also exhibits Enterobacteriaceae inhibitory properties. Thus, it contributes to ameliorating the current medical landscape of inflammatory bowel disease.

Tungsten (W) stands out as one of the most promising matrix materials for cermet fuels in nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems, with its effective thermal conductivity (ETC) being intricately linked to the economic viability and safety of reactors. This study investigated the influence of sintering temperature on the microstructure of nanoscale W powder using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Based on the microstructural evolution observed at various temperatures, both a finite element (FE) model and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model were employed to assess the ETC of the W matrix, and the ETC was experimentally measured using the frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) method. The FE simulation results reveal a 7.5 % average relative error between modeled and measured ETC values at high sintering temperatures, demonstrating good consistency between simulation and experiment. Further analysis reveals that the porosity of the W matrix significantly affects its ETC. As the sintering temperature increases from 1273 to 1973 K, the porosity decreases from 32.48 % to 3.86 %, while the ETC increases from 46.07 to 160.71 W/(m·K). The ANN results demonstrate that the trained ANN model could accurately assess the ETC of the W matrix, with a regression coefficient of 0.9983 for the trained dataset and 0.9922 for the tested dataset. Based on the relationship between porosity and ETC, an optimized formula has been developed for predicting the ETC of the W matrix with an R² value of 0.9954 and an RRMSE of 2.37 %. The ANN model established in this study provides an accurate method for predicting the ETC of W and offers new insights and references for predicting the ETC of other materials.

The slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) significantly limit the performance and broader applications of zinc-air batteries. To address this, a series of M-N-C catalysts were synthesized using W,O-doped ZIF-67 as a precursor. By modifying the surface electronic structure through doping and improving oxygen intermediate adsorption, these catalysts demonstrated excellent bifunctional catalytic activities for OER and ORR. Among them, W,O-CoNC700 achieved the half-wave potential and overpotential of 0.81 V and 359 mV, respectively. DFT calculations revealed that doping with W atoms affected the d-band center of the Co site, thus enhancing its catalytic ability. The maximum power density of a W,O-CoNC700-based zinc-air battery reached 174.8 mW/cm², outperforming the commercial Pt/C + IrO₂ catalysts. Under constant current discharge at 5 and 10 mA/cm², the cell maintained 1100 and 450 h, respectively.

Tungsten powder is an essential raw material for producing tungsten carbide powders and tungsten-based alloys. However, the fabrication of high-performance spherical tungsten powders remains costly, and achieving a uniform distribution of doped elements poses significant challenges. In this study, a molecularly homogeneous W-Cr precursor solution was prepared using soluble salts, namely ammonium metatungstate ((NH 4 ) 6 [H 2 W 12 O 40 ]·xH 2 O)) and ammonium chromate ((NH 4 ) 2 CrO 4 ). Near-spherical W-Cr 2 O 3 composite powders with various Cr doping contents were synthesized through spray drying, calcination, and low-temperature hydrogen reduction. Subsequently, WC-10Co-xCr cemented carbides were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) following carburization. The effects of reduction temperature and Cr content on the morphology and phase composition of the W-Cr 2 O 3 composite powders were systematically examined. In addition, the influence of Cr doping on the mechanical properties of the cemented carbides was preliminarily evaluated. The results reveal that, at a reduction temperature of 900 °C and a Cr doping level of 0.5 wt%, the W-Cr 2 O 3 composite powders exhibit a uniform near-spherical morphology with fine and consistent particle sizes. The corresponding cemented carbide demonstrates superior overall performance. Furthermore, the Cr element is uniformly dispersed throughout the WO 3 precursor, W-Cr 2 O 3 composite powders, and the final alloy matrix.
