Microwave-assisted sonochemical synthesis of Cu and Mn doped GSH–ZnS polypeptide quantum dots and their enhanced photoelectrochemical properties

Jian-Jun Shi,Lei Gong,Yan-Hong Zhang,Ping Yang,Jie He

A series of Cu and Mn doped glutathione (GSH)–ZnS polypeptide quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared by a facile one-pot microwave-assisted sonochemical synthesis approach. Herein, GSH acted as a sulfide source and dispersant, as well as a reducing agent to form polypeptide QDs. The products were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results show that the size of the polypeptides QDs was 2–3 nm. In Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, the splitting of S–H bonds and substitution by S–Zn can be noticed. The bonding interaction between Cu, Mn and Zn ions toward S was further confirmed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The results confirmed the partial Cu(Mn) substitution of Zn. Fluorescence (FL) spectra and UV-vis absorption spectra were used to investigate the optical properties. It was found that the doping of Cu and Mn could decrease the band gap of GSH–ZnS from 3.67 eV to 2.86 eV. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of GSH–ZnS were enhanced due to the doping of Cu and Mn which has excellent chemical stability. The possible photoelectrochemical reaction mechanism is discussed.

Enhancing built-in electric field via ZnIn2S4 nanosheet decorated with ZnS quantum dots photocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution

Asif Hassan Raza,Long Li,Shumail Farhan,Wenjing Fu,Yan Wu

Two dimensional (2D) photocatalytic materials are desirable to achieve synergistic charge transfer and segregation. Here, we have developed 2D ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet (3–4 nm) that generates more active sites for excellent photocatalytic activity. Further, we have fabricated ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) embedded with ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet in the form of ZnS QDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZnS NPs/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructures prepared via one step hydrothermal method. The optimal ZnS QDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 presents the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 4.5 mmol g −1 h −1 which was approximately 5 and 34 times higher than that of their counterparts as well as about 3 times more efficient than ZnS NPs/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 21.2% was observed at 350 nm. The work functions determined through Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) elaborate the charge transfer mechanism. In situ KPFM validated the surface potential difference between the ZnS QDs and ZnIn 2 S 4 interfaces estimated about 55 mV which was approximately 2 times higher than ZnS NPs/ZnIn 2 S 4 . Theoretical calculation confirms the significant reduction in Gibbs free energy about −0.6 eV. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra suggest the development of a novel S-scheme mechanism and provides a unique insight into the charge transfer, separation and the surface photovoltage of heterostructure photocatalysts.

Delicate Construction of Z-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalysts by ZnS Quantum Dots Wrapped CoWO4 Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient Environmental Remediation

Junlong Zhang,Jie Wei,Jianting Li,Minchuan Xiahou,Zehao Sun,Ao Cao,Youxin Yuanfeng,Guogang Chen,Yongqiang Chen

In recent times, the fabrication of Z-scheme heterostructures has gained popularity as an effective strategy for developing composite catalysts with photogenerated carriers that possess high redox capacity. This study introduces a novel type of direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts known as ZnS quantum dots wrapped around CoWO4 nanoparticles (ZnS-QDs@CoWO4). The results of the experiments and analysis indicate that these heterojunction photocatalysts demonstrate superior degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in wastewater compared with individual ZnS-QDs or CoWO4. Notably, the 30ZS-CWO catalyst, with a mass ratio of 30:1 between ZnS-QDs and CoWO4, exhibited the highest photocatalytic reaction rate constant (k = 0.03427 min–1), which is 3.5 times greater than that of ZnS-QDs (k = 0.00969 min–1) and 214 times higher than that of CoWO4 (k = 0.00016 min–1). The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to two main factors. First, the use of CoWO4 nanoparticles as carriers helps in better dispersing the ZnS quantum dots, leading to increased catalytic reaction sites. Second, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the composite photocatalysts significantly boosts the redox capability of the photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the excellent stability and recyclability of ZnS-QDs@CoWO4 heterojunction photocatalysts were validated through five-cycle experiments. This research introduces a promising approach for developing QDs-based Z-scheme photocatalysts for highly effective environmental remediation.

Highly sensitive fiber-optic chemical pH sensor based on surface modification of optical fiber with ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots

Zongjie Zhang,Hongxia Zhang,Lili Hou,Dagong Jia,Kaixin Yao,Qingyang Meng,Jiayi Qu,Bing Yan,Qingxin Luan,Tiegen Liu

The pH value plays a vital role in many biological and chemical reactions. In this work, the fiber-optic chemical pH sensors were fabricated based on carboxyl ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and tapered optical fiber . The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of QDs is pH-dependence because protonation and deprotonation can affect the process of electron-hole recombination. The evanescent wave of tapered optical fiber was used as excitation source in the process of PL. To obtain higher sensitivity, the end faces of fiber were optimized for cone region. By lengthening the cone region and shrinking the end diameter of optical fiber, evanescent wave was enhanced and the excitation times of QDs were increased, which improved the PL intensity and the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensitivity of sensor can reach as high as 0.139/pH in the range of pH 6.00–9.01. The surface functional modification was adopted to prepare sensing films. The carboxyl groups on the QDs ligands are chemically bonded to the fiber surface, which is good for response time (40 s) and stability (decreased 0.9 % for 5 min). These results demonstrated that ZnCdSe/ZnS QDs-based fiber-optic chemical pH sensors are promising approach in rapid and precise pH detection.

Overcoming side reaction effects in the colloidal synthesis of ZnSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots with an etching strategy

He Jinhua,Wang Chenhui,Liu Mingrui,Ramzan Muhammad,Long Zhiwei,Wu Xian-gang,Chen Yu,Zhong Haizheng

The potential use of large-size ZnSe quantum dots as blue emitters for display applications has greatly inspired the colloidal synthesis. Herein, we report the negative effects of side reactions of large-size ZnSe quantum dots. The side reactions between oleic acid and oleylamine generated amidation products and H 2 O, which led to the hydrolysis of Zn(OA) 2 to Zn(OH) 2 and the subsequent formation of zinc oxide (ZnO) and zinc bis[diphenylphosphinate] (Zn(DPPA) 2 ) precipitates. These side reactions resulted in the formation of a defective surface including a Se-rich surface and oxygen-related defects. Such negative effects can be overcome by adopting an etching strategy using potassium fluoride and myristic acid in combination. By overcoating a ZnS shell, blue emissive ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots with a maximum photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 91% were obtained. We further fabricated ZnSe quantum dots-based blue light-emitting diodes with an emission peak at 456 nm. The device showed a turn-on voltage of 2.7 V with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.2% and a maximum luminance of 1223 cd·m −2 .

Photonic-Crystal-Printed Fabrics with Wash Resistance Properties for Color Stability Based on Hot Press Printing of ZnS Nanoparticles

Chen Pan,Aqing Tian,Mingxiong Wu,Qingwen Shi,Haiying Tan,Danyi Shao,Jiuxiao Sun,Fengfeng Zhou,Dongsheng Liu

Photonic crystals (PCs), which are micro nanostructured materials periodically arranged from media with different refractive indices, have attracted great interest in textile coloring over the past decades. However, the washing resistance of PC-based fabrics cannot meet the requirements of daily washing, which limits the application of PCs in coloring. Therefore, it is particularly important to further improve the washing resistance of PC-based fabrics. Herein, high-refractive index zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles were spray-coated on polyethylene films with patterns to construct PC-based fabrics by hot press printing. The excellent toughness of polyethylene was utilized to improve the washing resistance of fabrics. The influence of the hot press process, the color control method of PCs, and the washing and friction resistance of fabrics were systematically studied. Generally, the wash resistance of the obtained fabric did not fade after 24 times of laundered washing. The results of this work will benefit the application of PCs in textile coloring, sensors, and so on.

Y-Type Titanyl Phthalocyanine Nanoparticle and Hollow ZnS Nanotube Heterojunctions with Cavity Enhancement Effect for UV–Vis–NIR Photodetectors

Xiaolong Li,Yulu Tang,Jundi Wan,Yahui Zhang,Dongjun Lv,Mingyuan Guo,Yongning Ma,Yuhao Yang

UV–vis–NIR photodetectors are of great importance to extensive applications, while they are limited by the low photon utilization and narrow light response range inherent in a single material. To overcome these limitations, we propose the construction of heterojunction photosensitive materials featuring a hollow structure. In this study, Y-type titanylphthalocyanine nanoparticles (Y-TiOPc NPs) and hollow ZnS nanotubes (ZnS NTs) are employed to fabricate a bulk heterojunction photosensitive material (Y-TiOPc NPs:ZnS NTs). This composite material exhibits a significant cavity enhancement effect, resulting from multiple light reflections and outstanding light absorption spanning from 365 to 1060 nm. The photodetector based on Y-TiOPc NPs:ZnS NTs (referred to as Y:ZT-PD) demonstrates remarkable photodetection capabilities, including photomultiplication phenomena. Specifically, it achieves a high external quantum efficiency of 24042%, an impressive photoresponsivity (R) of 101967 mA/W, and an excellent specific detectivity (D*) of 1.56 × 1012 Jones at 0.01 mW/cm2. Additionally, the multiperiod time-resolved photocurrent response curves exhibit rapid and stable responses across different wavelengths. Characterization results indicate that these exceptional performances primarily arise from the cavity enhancement effect of ZnS NTs and the hole-injection effect resulting from interfacial trapped electrons. Consequently, the outstanding performance, coupled with the broad spectral range and stability, positions the hollow bulk heterojunction as a promising material for the next generation of broadband photodetectors.

Surface Defects Passivation of ZnSeTe/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots by Iodine Ions for Highly Efficient Blue Light-Emitting Diodes

Zhongyuan Guan,Yang Huang,Zhaojin Wang,Jiayun Sun,Chengwei Shan,Yiguo Xu,Dan Wu,Aiwei Tang,Xiao Wei Sun,Kai Wang

The development of cadmium-free blue quantum dots (QDs) is of paramount importance to the display industry. In this study, high-quality ZnSeTe/ZnSe/ZnS blue QDs, followed by surface treatment with ZnI 2 are initially synthesized. The introduction of ZnI 2 passivated the surface defects, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence quantum yield. The time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) demonstrates a significant inhibition of non-radiative recombination associated with the surface defect state. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the binding energy between iodine ions and zinc ions is higher than that between oleate ions and zinc ions, providing a theoretical basis for the effective passivation of the suspended bonds of zinc ions on QDs' surface by iodine ions. Moreover, quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are fabricated and UV photoelectron spectra (UPS) indicate the hole injection barrier between the hole transport layer and QDs decreases 0.12 eV after QDs being treated by ZnI 2 , facilitating hole injection. Finally, The ZnI 2 -treated QLED demonstrates a 1.57-fold and 1.82-fold improvement in L max and EQE max , respectively, reaching 6370 cd m −2 and 9.1%, compared to the pristine QLED. The work serves as a valuable reference for enhancing the performance of cadmium-free blue QLED.

High-Color-Rendition White QLEDs by Balancing Red, Green and Blue Centres in Eco-Friendly ZnCuGaS:In@ZnS Quantum Dots

Jiangyuan Jiang,Shuai Zhang,Qingsong Shan,Linxiang Yang,Jing Ren,Yongjin Wang,Seokwoo Jeon,Hengyang Xiang,Haibo Zeng

White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are the key components in the next-generation lighting and display devices. The inherent toxicity of Cd/Pb-based quantum dots (QDs) limits the further application in WLEDs. Recently, more attention is focused on eco-friendly QDs and their WLEDs, especially the phosphor-free WLEDs based on mono-component, which profits from bias-insensitive color stability. However, the imbalanced carrier distribution between red-green-blue luminescent centers, even the absence of a certain luminescent center, hinders their balanced and stable photoluminescence/electroluminescence (PL/EL). Here, an In 3+ -doped strategy in Zn-Cu-Ga-S@ZnS QDs is first proposed, and the balanced carrier distribution is realized by non-equivalent substitution and In 3+ doping concentration modulation. The alleviation of the green emitter by the In 3+ -related red emitter and the compensation of blue emitter by the Zn-related electronic states contribute to the balanced red-green-blue emitting with high PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 95.3% and long lifetime (T 90 ) of over 1100 h in atmospheric conditions. Thus, the In 3+ -doped WLEDs can achieve exceedingly slight proportional variations between red-green-blue EL intensity over time (∆CIE = (0.007, 0.009)), and high champion CRI of 94.9. This study proposes a single-component QD with balanced and stable red-green-blue PL/EL spectrum, meeting the requirements of lighting and display.

In situ etching growth of defective ZnS nanosheets anchored vertically on layered-double-hydroxide microflowers for accelerated photocatalytic activity

Fan Gao,Rui Lei,Xueyan Huang,Jie Yuan,Cankun Jiang,Wenhui Feng,Lulu Zhang,Ping Liu

Two-dimensional nanomaterial semiconductor is an efficient photocatalyst due to the unique properties such as abundant exposed active sites and large contact area with reactant. Herein, a hierarchical architecture that consists of highly dispersed ZnS nanosheets (ZnS NSs) with S vacancies vertically anchored on the Zn-In-layered-double-hydroxide (Zn-In-LDH) is successfully constructed through in situ etching growth process. The defective ZnS NSs grown perpendicularly on the Zn-In-LDH surfaces with abundant exposed area disperse extensively and exhibit good performance of photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. It is due to the synergistic effect of large specific surface area, separate vertically grown ZnS NSs and S defects, that the optical ZnS/Zn-In-LDH composite shows an improved H 2 evolution rate of 49.3 μmol h −1 g cat −1 (154.8 μmol h −1 g ZnS −1 ) and the AQE at 415 nm can be as high as 1.315 %. Besides, this work is expected to facilitate other analogous nanosheets synthesized based on the layered double hydroxides.

Interfacial engineering driven Cu2-xS/ZnS composite by one-step synthesis as an ultrastable anode for lithium-ion storage

Yu Rao,Penghua Liang,Chenxiao Guo,Xize Chen,Minglei Cao,Chuankun Zhang,Rui Tong,Kongjun Zhu

Metal sulfide is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to their unique layered structure and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the challenge lies in enhancing electronic conductivity and cycling stability. An effective method to enhance the rate capability and cycle performance of metal sulfide materials is to construct the hybrid structure. In this paper, the interfacial engineering of multiple sulfides is explored to develop ideal lithium-ion storage anode materials. Hence, the one-step mixed hydrothermal method was used to synthesize the Cu 2-x S/ZnS hybrid structure. The synthesized Cu 2-x S/ZnS hybrid structure exhibits better lithium storage performance and higher electronic conductivity compared with the single Cu 2-x S, which has resulted from the existence of the phase interface generating the built-in electric field and boosting Li + storage properties at the phase interfaces. In comparison with the single Cu 2-x S, the results display that the Cu 2-x S/ZnS hybrid structure shows enhanced rate capability and prominent long-term cycling performance (416.9 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1300 cycles). This strategy demonstrates that the construction of hybrid structure can improve the electronic conductivity and structure stability for other advanced anode materials.

Multifunctional C/ZnS nanocapsules modified carbon cloth as 3D conductive collector and lithium host for stable lithium metal anodes

Zhou Luo-Ting,Zhang Qian-Qian,Yuan Hua-Dong,Fang Ru-Yi,Luo Jian-Min,Huang Hui,Gan Yong-Ping,Xia Yang,Zhang Jun,Xia Xin-Hui,He Xin-Ping,Jin Cheng-Bin,Zhang Wen-Kui

Lithium (Li) metal anodes (LMAs) that employ three-dimensional lithiophilic frameworks are among the most promising options for constructing high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. Herein, hollow ZnS nanosheets with the coating of N-doped carbon are modified on the surface of carbon cloth (NCHZS@CC) to serve as the host material for Li metal. It is revealed that the high surface area of NCHZS@CC can significantly reduce local current density and mitigate volume change during cycling. More importantly, the lithiated product of ZnS, confined within the carbon cage, facilitates the uniform deposition of Li metal on carbon fibers and promotes the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase enriched with Li 2 S, thereby improving long-term performance as the cycling progresses. Consequently, the LMAs based on NCHZS@CC demonstrate an impressive cycle life beyond 560 h with an ultralow overpotential of 38 mV at a current density of 5 mA cm −2 with a capacity of 1 mAh cm −2 in the symmetric cell. In addition, when matched with a high mass loading cathode of LiFePO 4 (11.5 mg cm −2 ), the assembled full cell displays outstanding performance, achieving 900 cycles at a rate of 2C.
