Negative Poisson’s ratio structural cellulose aerogel with excellent impact resistance

Shuaiqi Wang,Yihan Zeng,Chen Wang,Sijia Sun,Changtong Mei,Mingzhu Pan

Cellulose aerogel is a promising cushioning material for impact-resistant applications owing to its low density and high porosity. However, the weakness of mechanical strength and stress dispersion effects resulted in local damage and failure of aerogels. Herein, we constructed significantly negative Poisson’s ratio effect of nanocellulose aerogels by covalently cross-linking cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and polyacrylamide (PAM), and introducing concave hexagonal structure. The nanocellulose aerogels with concave hexagonal exhibited an anisotropic negative Poisson’s ratio (maximum negative Poisson’s ratio of −0.203), providing high energy-absorbing efficiency and large deformation buffer space. During compression, the crosslinked networks formed within the CNF/PAM cellular walls act as strain transfer channels, further improving the strain conductivity and the mechanical strength of the nanocellulose aerogels. The negative Poisson’s ratio structure and dense cellular walls provided the aerogel excellent stress dispersion and energy-absorbing effects at 30% strain, and excellent impact-resistant properties under the strong impact of a steel ball. This work provides an attractive strategy to construct aerogels with eco-friendly, lightweight, higher strength, and negative Poisson’s ratio structure and extend the applications in the field of impact energy-absorbing and cushioning, i.e., aeronautics, high speed vehicle, and packaging machinery.

Real-Time Uranyl Ion Adsorption Monitoring Based on Cellulose Hydrogels

Xue Zhang,Mengzhao Liu,Chi Zhang,Zaiwu Yuan,Hong Chi

Hydroxypropyl cellulose has attracted significant attention due to its unique structure and optical properties. However, its inherent rigidity and large pitch limit its application in the visual sensing of heavy metal ions and as flexible films. In this article, we designed and fabricated flexible structural color hydrogels via photocuring cellulose with acrylamide and acrylic acid. The resulting composite hydrogel showed excellent flexibility, with the toughness of the hydrogel containing 50 wt % cellulose reaching 107.42 kJ m–3. This enhancement is attributed to the intercalation of acrylamide and acrylic acid into the periodic structure of cellulose through hydrogen bonding. The hydrogel (G50) with 50 wt % cellulose also demonstrated high water retention, maintaining 97.21% retention even after 12 h in saturated brine. Using the uranyl ion as a model, G50 exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 572.3 mg/g and showed good selectivity among mixed nuclide ions and alkali metal ions. The adsorption process was identified as chemisorption, fitting well with the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The minimum detection limit was 100 mg/L, accompanied by a color shift from red to purple. X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and molecular simulation revealed that the adsorption mechanism of UO22+ involved coordination with amido and carboxyl groups, as well as electrostatic interaction. These findings expand the potential for resource utilization of natural products and enhance the application of cellulose in visual analysis and detection.

Responsive Photonic Filaments from Confined Self-Assembly of Cellulose Nanocrystals

Fusheng Zhang,Jiaqi Yu,Wei Zhong,Zhixiang Wang,Qiongya Li,Guangyan Qing

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) hold transformative potential for sustainable photonics, particularly in applications such as polarization-selective devices and chiroptical sensors. However, conventional CNC derivatives are primarily limited to dense flat films, restricting their functionalization in soft fibers and wearable textiles. Advancing CNCs into infinitely extending cylindrical filaments presents an opportunity to unlock fascinating applications, yet this transformation is often hindered by the Plateau–Rayleigh instability, leading to the breakup of CNC suspensions into droplets. Here, we propose an innovation strategy for the continuous and scalable production of chiral photonic filaments by confining the photo-cross-linking of CNC/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate precursors within cylindrical microtubules. The resulting filaments, driven by both shear flow and chiral self-assembly, exhibit a high degree of orientation along their central axis while preserving the nanohierarchical structure of the uniaxial nematic phase. Notably, these filaments achieve an orientation order parameter of 0.91, coupled with exceptional mechanical performances (14 MJ·m–3), as well as dynamic interference color-change capabilities in response to variations in hygroscopicity or applied mechanical strain. We present a proof-of-concept for optical fabrics using these photonic filaments, which supports the development of smart textiles and fashionable clothing, thereby significantly enriching the diversity and design possibilities of CNC-based materials.

Robust and Highly Conductive Cellulose-Based Eutectogel for Flexible Electronics

Lian Shu,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Jiayu Miu,Jianfeng Yao

High-performance ionic conductive gels are essential for the development of flexible electronic devices. However, the robustness and conductivity of gel materials are compromised at extreme temperatures. In this study, a high-performance eutectogel composed of cellulose and metal-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared. Specifically, cellulose was dissolved in a ternary DES (ZnCl2/water/citric acid) at room temperature, and then another polymerizable DES (ZnCl2/acrylic acid) was introduced to prepare eutectogels with multiple cross-linking hydrogen bonds. In such a design, the as-obtained eutectogels display a decent mechanical performance (tensile stress up to 1.43 MPa) and superior ionic conductivity (5.51 S m–1). Furthermore, their excellent environmental adaptability allows their use across a wide range of temperatures from −45 to +95 °C. Eutectogel-based wearable multifunctional sensors are highly responsive to both tensile and compressive deformation, monitor human movement, and transmit stable and tunable electrical signals. As a solid-state eutectogel-based electrolyte, the assembled supercapacitor has a wide operating voltage window of 2.2 V and a high specific capacitance of 143.2 F g–1 at a current density of 0.5 A g–1. This work provides an idea for designing green and flexible gel-based electronic devices.

Effective dissolution of cellulose in a DESs mixed solvent system

Li Wen,Meng Xiang-Guang,Yu Wen-Wang,Zhou Jie,Li Yan,Chu Dan-Dan

The dissolution of cellulose is an essential prerequisite for the development and utilization of cellulose. Here, a mixed solvent system containing deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and non-protonic organic solvents was prepared for the dissolution of three kinds of cellulose. This solvent system exhibited excellent ability for the dissolution of cellulose. The prepared mixed solvent system, comprising DESs synthesized from 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine and acetic acid in combination with dimethyl sulfoxide and N , N -dimethylacetamide, could dissolve up to 29 wt% of microcrystalline cellulose, 24 wt% of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp and 16 wt% of purified cotton with high polymerization degree at 80 °C. “Conjoining ion pairs” may be the main role in destroying the hydrogen bonds and promoting the dissolution of cellulose. The polymerization degree of the three regenerated celluloses only slightly decreased, and their infrared spectra did not show significant changes. This solvent system is inexpensive, easy to prepare, and recyclable.

Preparation and performance study of modified cellulose-based polymer absorbents

Li Lute,Wang Xiwen,Yang Jin

A modified cellulose-based polymer absorbent was synthesized via suspension polymerization. Firstly, cellulose and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were combined in a catalytic transesterification reaction to form a cellulose precursor functionalized with methacrylate groups and unsaturated bonds. The structure of this precursor was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Surface Energy Analysis, Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( 13 C-NMR), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of the mass ratio of butyl methacrylate to styrene, as well as the amounts of initiator, cross-linker, porogen, dispersant, and cellulose precursor, on the oil absorption rate of the polymer absorbent were examined. Optimal synthesis conditions were identified, and the adsorbent's microstructure and adsorption mechanism were characterized by FT-IR, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and adsorption rate analysis. The adsorption kinetics model was also determined. Additionally, recyclability and oil–water separation tests were performed on samples prepared under optimal conditions. Results showed that the modified cellulose-based polymer absorbent has a stable structure with surface micropores, high absorption rates, fast adsorption kinetics, and excellent stability and oil–water separation capability, indicating potential applications in the removal of organic pollutants and organic solvents from water.

Cellulose depolymerization using zinc chloride hydrate and solid acid catalysts

Paiva Mateus F.,Albuquerque Elise M.,de Souza Priscilla M.,Bitter Johannes H.,Vanhove Guillaume,Wojcieszak Robert,Noronha Fábio B.

Increasing the efficiency of cellulose hydrolysis is a crucial milestone to enable its use as a platform for the production of renewable chemicals. Consequently, exploring alternative techniques for cellulose dissolution and subsequent depolymerization and hydrolysis remains a pivotal area of research. This study delves into the performance of diverse solid acid catalysts (ion-exchange resins, metal oxides, and zeolites) for cellulose depolymerization when combined with a concentrated solution of zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) as the reaction medium and extractant. The influence of this molten salt hydrate on cellulose dissolution and the stability of the tested catalysts was thoroughly investigated. Optimal mild operating conditions (90 °C and 2 h) that facilitate enhanced conversion and selective glucose production were identified. The highest glucose yields (exceeding 40%) were obtained with Amberlyst-15 and HZSM-5 (SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3  = 23), effectively mitigating product degradation and equaling or surpassing the traditional homogeneous system using H 2 SO 4 . Furthermore, insights into the deactivation mechanisms affecting the best catalysts are provided.

Transparent and flexible cellulose based luminescent film for multifunctional applications

Cong Ma,Meiyun Zhang,Jialong Xing,Baolong Yuan,Hao Sun,Dexian Ji,Jingru Zhang

Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) film shows significant potential in flexible optoelectronics, including applications in lighting, displays, wearable devices and non-planar X-ray imaging. However, developing highly luminescent, durable, and mechanical flexible film for practical use remains a challenge. In this study, we introduce a low-cost, environmentally friendly, biomass material - mixed cellulose esters (MCE) - as a novel encapsulation matrix. The CsPbBr 3 @MCE composite luminescent film was fabricated using a simple in-situ growth strategy, ensuring uniform distribution of QDs within the matrix. The chemical bond anchoring between MCE and CsPbBr 3 QDs, combined with the effective isolation provided by in-situ encapsulation, resulted in exceptional luminescence properties, including a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY = 67.73 %) and excellent color purity. Additionally, the film demonstrated enhanced stability against environmental, thermal, ultraviolet, and high-humidity stresses, thanks to the protective encapsulation of MCE. It also exhibited remarkable mechanical flexibility, transparency, the capability for large-area production. These findings suggest that the CsPbBr 3 @MCE composite holds great promise for various applications, including light-emitting diodes, flexible pattern display, hazardous chemical identification, information encryption, and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Catalytic Conversion of Cellulose to Levulinic Acid by Metal Chlorides

Lu Lin,Junping Zhuang

The catalytic performance of various metal chlorides in the conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid in liquid water at high temperatures was investigated. The effects of reaction parameters on the yield of levulinic acid were also explored. The results showed that alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides were not effective in conversion of cellulose, while transition metal chlorides, especially CrCl3, FeCl3and CuCl2and a group IIIA metal chloride (AlCl3), exhibited high catalytic activity. The catalytic performance was correlated with the acidity of the reaction system due to the addition of the metal chlorides, but more dependent on the type of metal chloride. Among those metal chlorides, chromium chloride was found to be exceptionally effective for the conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid, affording an optimum yield of 67 mol % after a reaction time of 180 min, at 200 °C, with a catalyst dosage of 0.02 M and substrate concentration of 50 wt %. Chromium metal, most of which was present in its oxide form in the solid sample and only a small part in solution as Cr3+ion, can be easily separated from the resulting product mixture and recycled. Finally, a plausible reaction scheme for the chromium chloride catalyzed conversion of cellulose in water was proposed. Keywords:metal chlorides;cellulose;catalytic conversion;levulinic acid

Cellulose Nanocrystal and Polymer Composite Microspheres for Methylene Blue Adsorption

Yaxuan Deng,Zenghui Li,Rui Wang,Yue Shi

In the present study, cellulose composite microspheres were synthesized based on the reversed-phase suspension method by introducing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into polyacrylamide (PAM), followed by partial hydrolysis. Their adsorption performance for methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solution was investigated by varying the CNC content, pH value, and particle size of the microspheres, showing excellent removal efficiency and a good regeneration performance. In addition, the adsorption kinetics were determined in accordance with the quasi-secondary kinetic model, and the equilibrium isotherm performance followed the Langmuir adsorption model. This work provides a reliable experimental basis and solid theoretical foundation for the potential application of cellulose-based composite microspheres in the field of wastewater treatment. They are expected to represent a highly efficient adsorbent material and promote the development of related fields.

Tunable alkaline-modified microcrystalline cellulose for deacidification of corn oil

Ge Bai,Yaqin Zhang,Yiguo Yuan,Kaiheng Zhang,Yan Liu,Yu Zhang,Yan Ma,Heng Du

Advancing eco-friendly refining technologies that preserve key bioactives is vital for producing high-quality functional edible oils. In this work, corn oil was selected as a representative model to evaluate a sustainable deacidification strategy based on alkali-modified cellulose materials. Alkali-modified cellulose (AMC) adsorbents were developed by treating microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with NaOH (5–50 %) and evaluated for their performance in corn oil deacidification. The adjustability of alkali concentration enables the preparation of AMC with specific adsorption capacities suited to oils of varying acid values. The AMC treated with 25 % NaOH achieved the highest deacidification efficiency (97.23 %) under optimized conditions (3 % dosage, 50 °C, 200 rpm, 90 min) for corn oil with an initial acid value of 6.51 mg KOH/g. The alkali treatment caused visible changes in the color, morphology, and transparency of AMC, reflecting the structural transformation induced by different alkali concentrations. Structural characterizations via SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR confirmed enhanced porosity and crystalline transformation conducive to free fatty acid (FFA) adsorption. AMC showed minimal impact on oil's peroxide value and fatty acid composition, with high retention of tocopherols (96.27 %) and phytosterols (91.17 %), though squalene loss was substantial (85.91 %). These findings indicate that AMC can be further developed into a tunable and selective deacidification approach for corn oil and potentially other edible oils, enabling precision refinement while minimizing nutritional loss.

Comparative Experimental Study on Hydrolysis of Cellulose by Plasma Acid

Weidong Zhao,Yi Sun,Weijun Zhang,Yongsheng Fan,Junfeng Wang

The key technological step in realizing the energy utilization of cellulose lies in the hydrolysis of cellulose into glucose. To achieve clean and efficient energy utilization of cellulose, this study innovatively proposes a technical approach of plasma acid synchronous catalytic hydrolysis of cellulose, which breaks through the limitations of conventional stepwise acid-production hydrolysis and enables the simultaneous generation of acid and hydrolysis of cellulose within the same reaction system. The effects of operating voltage, discharge gap, and reaction time on hydrolysis efficiency were systematically investigated, and a comparative study was conducted on the hydrolysis performance between the synchronous method and the two-step method. The results indicate that within the same reaction duration, the synchronous method demonstrates a significantly higher cellulose conversion rate. Specifically, at a reaction time of 60 min, the average conversion rate of the synchronous method is approximately 32.8% higher than that of the two-step method, while the average specific energy consumption is only 16.7% of the latter. Mechanism analysis reveals that the high-energy electrons and H+generated by plasma discharge effectively facilitate efficient energy transfer to cellulose molecules, significantly reducing the activation energy of the hydrolysis reaction. This process accelerates the efficient release of glucose units, thereby enabling faster hydrolysis at lower energy consumption.
