Sulfur electrode modified by bifunctional nafion/γ-Al2O3 membrane for high performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Xiaoyan Liu,Zhongqiang Shan,Kunlei Zhu,Jiangyong Du,Qiwei Tang,Jianhua Tian

Lithium sulfur batteries have brought significant advancement to the current state-of-art battery technologies due to their high theoretical specific energy of 1675 mAh g −1 . However, the rapid capacity degradation, mainly caused by polysulfide dissolution, remains a significant challenge prior to practical applications. In this work, a sulfur cathode modified by bifunctional nafion/γ-Al 2 O 3 membrane has been successfully prepared, which can remarkably immobilize the polysulfides within the unique cathode structure due to its ions selectivity and absorbent capacity. A high initial discharge capacity of 1448.0 mAh g −1 can be achieved at 1C and 788.6 mAh g −1 preserved after 200 cycles, indicating a slow degradation. Furthermore, the coulombic efficiency maintains as high as 97% during cycling. The excellent electrochemical properties can be attributed to the bifunctional and stable membrane which can dramatically reduce the shuttle effect and keep integrated even after charging–discharging for 200 cycles.

Dong Yang,Kun Ge,Huiyun Ban,Xinyang Chu,Shan Liu,Sen Qian,Zhehao Hua,Hua Cai,Danping Chen,Jinsheng Jia,Xinyuan Sun,Jing Ren,Gao Tang,Minghui Zhang,Jiawen Xiao,Yiping Du

High transparency Ce 3+ -doped dense gadolinium aluminum borosilicate (GS x ) glass scintillator was synthesized in reducing atmosphere by melt-quenching process. The transmittance of the glasses exceeds 80%, and the light attenuation length is between 5-20 cm within the range of 400–600 nm. GS x glass shows an photoluminescence (PL) in range of 350–550 nm, with the strongest emission peak around 420 nm. The PL decay time of GS x glasses is around 37 ns, with a maximum PL quantum yield of 44.05%. The integrated X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) intensity of GS S glass is 52.5% compared with BGO crystal. For X-ray imaging, GS L glass based imaging system shows a high spatial resolution of 9 lp/mm, which is comparable to CsI:Tl X-ray detectors. Under γ-ray, the highest light yield of GS S glass is 1235 ph/MeV with an energy resolution of 24.0% at 662 keV, close to that of BSO crystal. The scintillation decay time of GS x glasses is consisted of fast (∼100 ns) and slow (∼560 ns) components. In thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), GS S glass exhibits a strong TSL peak at approximately 440 K, with low intensity shoulders at about 520 K, implying different types of defects and traps. Therefore, GS x glass has promising prospects for X-ray imaging and high-energy physics applications.

Multiresidue Pesticide Analysis in Cereal Grains Using Nanosized γ-Aluminum Oxide as Effective Purification Material

Guan Wenbi,Lian Hengrui,Cai Yunjin,Yao Su,Wang Hongwu

This study demonstrated the application of nanosized γ-aluminum oxide as dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) sorbent to pesticides multi-residue analysis in cereal grains by gas chromatography combined with orbitrap mass spectrometry (GC-Orbitrap-MS). The influence of structural phase, particle size, and usage amount of nanosized aluminum oxide were investigated on d-SPE cleanup performance. The ability of nanosized γ-aluminum oxide to clean up interfering substances from ethyl acetate extracts of cereal grains was also evaluated. Compared with common d-SPE sorbents (i.e., primary secondary amine (PSA), basic alumina, neutral alumina, acidic alumina, octadecylsilane (C18), florisil, graphitized carbon black (GCB), and nanosized ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4)), 10 nm γ-aluminum oxide was cost-effective and exhibited much better cleanup performance with 99.72% removal of eluting matrix components for wheat kernel. Meanwhile, a multiresidue method was validated on 24 representative pesticide residues in three cereal grains (wheat kernel, rice, and corn). Acceptable average recoveries of 71.1-117.0% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 12.7% were obtained for all target pesticides. The method met the 5-10 μg L-1 limit of detection and 10-20 μg kg-1 limit of quantification. The results indicated that 10 nm γ-aluminum oxide represented an affordable and effective d-SPE adsorbent for pesticides multiresidue analysis in cereal grains.

Quaternary ammonium-functionalized γ-cyclodextrin tailored polyamide nanofiltration membranes for highly selective Li+/Mg2+ separation

Tiansheng Gao,Yuqian Yang,Wenzhong Ma,Xiaoyi Zhang,Haicun Yang,Qiuyan Bi,Jing Zhong,Hideto Matsuyama

Positively charged nanofiltration membranes effectively extract lithium resources from brine due to their excellent ion selectivity. However, current positively charged nanofiltration membranes generally suffer from low permeation flux and poor lithium ion transport efficiency. To address these issues, constructing nanoscale channels with precise ion sieving capability within nanofiltration membranes has become a recent research focus. In this study, a novel nanochannel material—quaternized γ-cyclodextrin (Q-γ-CD)—was synthesized. Q-γ-CD contains positively charged quaternary ammonium groups on its surface, which can enhance the positive charge density of the membrane surface, thereby improving the rejection of divalent cations (such as Mg 2+ ). Meanwhile, the cavity size and hydrophobic inner cavity of Q-γ-CD provide rapid transport pathways for lithium ions and water molecules. By introducing Q-γ-CD into an aqueous solution containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) and using trimesoyl chloride (TMC) as the organic-phase monomer, a high-performance PEI/Q-γ-CD/TMC nanofiltration membrane was fabricated. Under optimal formulation conditions, the fabricated nanofiltration membrane exhibited a thin separation layer (≤100 nm), a pore size of approximately 0.45 nm, and a high surface charge (isoelectric point,  ≥ 9). Thanks to the precise ion-sieving nanochannels provided by Q-γ-CD, the membrane’s pure water flux increased to 13.34 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , while the rejection of magnesium ions reached 97.8 %, and the Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor achieved a value of 18.5. This study presents a novel design strategy for positively charged nanofiltration membranes, offering theoretical support and practical guidance for achieving efficient magnesium-lithium separation.

Highly efficient hydrogenation of levulinic acid into γ-valerolactone over modified bifunctional yolk-shell catalyst

Mingya Liu,Hanli Zheng,Xiaohui Yang,Zewei Hu,Yunxi Hou,Lu Shen,Dongyu Liu,Shitao Yu,Lu Li,Shiwei Liu,Yue Liu

The high efficiency production of renewable resources has been widely used in fuel and synthetic chemistry. In this work, a series of novel, efficient Pd@mSiO 2 -xCeO 2 bifunctional yolk-shell catalysts have been developed and applied to the preparation of γ-valerolactone by the hydrogenation of levulinic acid. The results showed that CeO 2 can effectively improve the catalytic performance of the catalyst, then achieve 100 % conversion of levulinic acid and 97 % selectivity of γ-valerolactone. The characterization results showed that the addition of CeO 2 regulated the acid sites of the catalyst, promoted the reduction of PdO, thus promoting the formation of more Pd 0 . In addition, the kinetic experiment results showed that the activation energy of the reaction effectively decreased with the addition of CeO 2 . Then, the reaction mechanism was studied using Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the encapsulation strategy of mesoporous silica shell provided a stable environment for the catalyst and maintains high activity after 5 cycles. The efficient and stable noble metal catalysts developed in this study significantly enhance the yield of biomass-derived γ-valerolactone. Their large-scale application not only supports the green production of biofuels and biodegradable materials but also establishes a material foundation for the generation of renewable energy, thereby contributing to the realization of a low-carbon circular economy.

Enhancing Preferential CO Oxidation of Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst Through an Acid-Modified Method

Shan Li,Huixia Li,Taotao Huang,Xuebo Chen

The development of efficient Cu–Ce catalysts for selective CO oxidation in hydrogen streams (CO-PROX) remains a critical challenge for hydrogen purification technologies. Herein, we report an acid-modified Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst synthesized through HCl-assisted wet impregnation and thermal aging, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature CO-PROX performance. The optimized CuCe0.8(Cl)0.2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst achieves superior CO conversion below 160 °C and maintains stable activity for 50 h at 160 °C. Mechanistic studies reveal that HCl modification induces dual enhancement effects: (1) increased Cu+ species density enhances CO adsorption capacity; (2) elevated Ce3+ concentration promotes oxygen vacancy formation for efficient O2 activation. Complementary characterization demonstrates that the acid treatment optimizes the active species dispersion and creates hierarchical pore structures in the γ-Al2O3 support, which facilitates reactant accessibility and stabilizes catalytic intermediates. The reaction mechanism involves synergistic cooperation between Cu+-mediated CO adsorption, oxygen vacancy-assisted O2 activation, and hydroxyl-assisted bicarbonate intermediate formation on the alumina support. This work establishes an effective acid-modification strategy for designing durable CO-PROX catalysts, advancing the development of a practical hydrogen purification system.

In-situ Cyanide Functionalization of ZIF-8 by γ-Irradiation for Photochemical removal of Uranium

Yukun Zhang,Chong Chen,Changjiang Hu,Jianfeng Zhao,Jun Ma

Photoreduction conversion of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) is regarded as an ideal strategy for removing uranium from water. The Cyanide-based photocatalysts shows promises for efficient uranium removal but their green synthesis remain significant challenges. Herein, we develop a γ-irradiation-induced strategy for in-situ -CN generation via imidazole ring opening in ZIF-8 MOFs for uranium photoreduction, circumventing the use of toxic cyanide sources. In-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and in-situ X-rays coupled diffraction infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) reveal morphological evolution via imidazole ring cleavage and -CN formation kinetics during irradiation. Research indicated that -CN-functionalized ZIF-8 displayed superior uranium photoreduction activity through -CN-UO22+ complexation and promotion of photo-induced electron transfer. Impressively, the uranium extraction capacity reached a value of 1532.4 mg/g, higher than most existing MOF-type photocatalysts. In-situ DRIFT spectroscopy revealed the intermediates of the photoreduction uranium reaction and their adsorption mode with the catalyst, providing a comprehensive mechanistic explanation. This work provides a sustainable pathway for uranium photoreduction and guidance for the green design of MOF-type photocatalysts.

Sustained antimicrobial polymer film from γ-CD-MOF humidity switch for fruit and vegetable preservation

Wangfei Yu,Guannan Wang,Huizhi Chen,Honglei Mu,Ben Niu,Yanchao Han,Lishu Wang,Hangjun Chen,Haiyan Gao

To address the poor hydrolytic stability of CD-MOF in food applications, CD-MOF loaded with thymol (TCDM) was prepared and filled into a pectin (PEC)/sodium alginate (SA) substrate with the aid of zein to obtain a thymol-CD-MOF/zein-PEC-SA (TCDM/ZPS) polymer film. Characterization revealed that zein-PEC/SA (ZPS) protected TCDM by forming amphiphilic microspheres. TCDM was able to exist stably in the hydrophilic polysaccharide substrate and achieve a long-term slow release over 336 h. Besides, environmental humidity could also be used as a switch for regulating the thymol release rate, which was consistent with the first-order release model (R 2  > 0.99). TCDM and TCDM/ZPS showed excellent antimicrobial effects against E. coli , S. aureus , and B. cinerea , the most common fungi in plant-based foods. The preservation experiment maintained the quality of strawberry and Agaricus bisporus mushroom. This strategy holds the potential to broaden the application scope and enhance the utility of CD-MOF in food preservation.

Production of γ-aminobutyric acid using corncob residue as carbohydrate feedstock by engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum

Ying-Ying Xu,Bin Zhang,Jie Bao

This study investigated Corynebacterium glutamicum for GABA production using corncob residue, a cheap carbon source, as carbohydrate feedstock instead of grains. Current fermentative production of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mainly relies on starch and sugar feedstocks. Therefore, the use of cheap carbon sources can effectively reduce the production costs of GABA. This study validated the feasibility of an available non-food lignocellulose feedstock, corncob residue, for GABA fermentation. An engineered C. glutamicum was constructed by secretory expression of glutamate decarboxylase gadBmut and knock-out the GABA biodegradation gene. The fermentation parameters in shake flasks and bioreactors were optimized including the sugar concentration, nitrogen levels, cofactor levels and aeration rate, and fermentation mode. The fed-batch fermentation of the concentrated corncob residue hydrolysate achieved a record high GABA production of 93.15 g/L from lignocellulosic feedstock with a yield of 0.43 g/g glucose. The results provided technical support for the industrial production of GABA from low-cost lignocellulosic carbohydrates.

Size effect of Rh/γ-Al2O3 catalyst in selective hydrogenation of dimethyl toluene-2,4-dicarbamate

Xuying Bian,Hualiang An,Xinqiang Zhao,Yanji Wang

The selective hydrogenation of dimethyl toluene-2,4-dicarbamate (TDC) to methyl cyclohexyl-2,4-dicarbamate (HTDC) is an important process for non-phosgene synthesis of methylcyclohexane-2,4-diisocyanate (HTDI). We prepared Rh/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts with an Rh particle size of 1.8–6.7 nm and studied size effect on TDC selective hydrogenation. The results showed that the catalytic activities of Rh/γ-Al 2 O 3 increase monotonously with increasing Rh particle size. This demonstrated that Rh/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst dedicates a negative size effect or an antipathetic structure sensitivity. Based on the characterization, we found that the geometric property of Rh is the main factor affecting the activity of catalyst. Combined with the proposed Rh particle model, it was inferred that the Rh (111) plays a major role in the TDC selective hydrogenation and the terrace sites are beneficial to promote the adsorption of TDC. The study on size effect can provide a guidance for the design and preparation of highly efficient Rh-based catalysts for TDC selective hydrogenation.

PPAR γ changing ALDH1A3 content to regulate lipid metabolism and inhibit lung cancer cell growth

Tian Xinyuan,Bai Xiaoping,Han Yunqi,Ye Yu,Peng Meiling,Cui Hongwei,Li Kai

PPAR γ, as a widely present receptor in tissues, plays a key role in lipid metabolism, energy balance, inflammatory response, and cell differentiation. It plays an important role in the occurrence and development of various tumors, including prostate cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, etc., by regulating lipid metabolism. However, the specific mechanism by which it affects lung cancer growth is not yet clear. To investigate how PPAR γ affects lung cancer cell growth by altering ALDH1A3 levels through its impact on lipid metabolism. Bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the correlation between PPAR γ, ALDH1A3 and lung cancer. Based on the results of bioinformatics analysis, PPAR γ activator (Pioglitazone, Pio) and ALDH1A3 inhibitor (diethylaminobenzaldehyde, DEAB) were used to act on lung cancer cells and observe their growth. After measuring the IC50 value of the drug in vitro experiments, lipid metabolomics analysis was conducted to identify the significant changes in differential metabolites and metabolic pathways under the combined influence of Pio and DEAB. Through bioinformatics analysis, it was found that there were significant differences in the levels of PPAR γ and ALDH1A3 between lung cancer and normal lung tissues, and ALDH1A3 was positively correlated with PPAR γ. AUC analysis found that PPAR γ and ALDH1A3 have good predictive value in the diagnosis and prognosis of lung cancer. GSEA enrichment analysis showed that PPAR γ and ALDH1A3 were significantly correlated with lipid oxidation. Combining relevant literature to demonstrate the inhibitory effect of PPAR γ receptors on lung cancer cells and the ability of PPAR γ activation to inhibit ALDH1A3 levels. Further in vitro CCK-8 and IC50 measurements of lung cancer cells A549 and H1299 were conducted, followed by non targeted lipidomics analysis. It was found that the metabolic pathways upregulated by activation of PPAR γ and inhibition of ALDH1A3 included glycerophospholipid metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, and fat digestion and absorption, with glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway accounting for the highest percentage. Conclusion: PPAR γ activation can inhibit the production of ALDH1A3, alter the glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway, and thus inhibit the proliferation of lung cancer cells. This study confirms that PPAR γ affects lung cancer proliferation by influencing the glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway.

Nitrogen-doped graphene supported Ni as an efficient and stable catalyst for levulinic acid hydrogenation

Qianqian Ding,Yuan Wang,Liang Ma

Transforming levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a significant route for converting biomass into valuable chemicals. The development of an efficient and robust heterogeneous catalyst for this reaction has aroused great interest. In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) supported nickel (Ni) based heterogeneous catalyst with excellent activities was successfully synthesized. The Ni/NG catalyst shows outstanding performance for hydrogenation of LA to GVL at a relatively low temperature of 140 °C, which is superior to most of reported heterogeneous catalysts. Further investigations indicate Ni nanoparticles are the active sites and the NG also plays an indispensable role. The catalytic performance is highly depended on the crystallinity, particles sizes and electronic structure of Ni in Ni/NG catalyst, which can be optimized by nitrogen doping. This work affords a new route for designing robust and excellent heterogeneous catalysts by doping method to optimize the support.
