To mitigate the trade-off between flame retardancy and mechanical performance in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), an optimized ternary flame-retardant formulation consisting of hydromagnesite (HM), microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP), and microencapsulated expandable graphite (MEG) was developed. The thermal stability, fire retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. At only 12 wt% loading, the optimized composite (TPU/HM1/MEG7/MRP4) achieved an LOI of 39.5% and passed UL-94 V-0. Cone calorimetry showed substantial reductions in total heat release (46.3%), peak heat release rate (74.1%), total smoke production (56.7%), and total carbon oxide emissions (61.3%). This superior performance is attributed to a gas–solid dual-phase synergistic mechanism, involving dilution of combustible volatiles by H 2 O and CO 2 released from HM, possible gas-phase inhibition by MRP-derived phosphorus-containing species, and formation of a compact intumescent char layer driven by MEG expansion and reinforced by MRP-derived phosphate/polyphosphate-like species. The optimized composite retained relatively high mechanical ductility, with a tensile strength of 22.1 MPa and an elongation at break of 745%, despite a reduction compared with pristine TPU. This work provides an effective low-loading formulation-optimization strategy for improving TPU fire safety while maintaining acceptable mechanical flexibility.

The development of functional hydrogel composites for environmental remediation represents a prominent research direction in sustainable materials science. In this investigation, a hierarchical (GO- g -P4VP/CdSe)@PAA hydrogel was fabricated through a multi-step synthesis protocol. Graphene oxide-grafted poly(4-vinylpyridine)/cadmium selenide (GO- g -P4VP/CdSe) nanocomposite was initially synthesized via facile hydrothermal crystallization, followed by integration into a polyacrylic acid (PAA) matrix through solution-phase crosslinking. The photocatalytic performance evaluation demonstrated that the composite hydrogel exhibited remarkable visible-light-driven catalytic activity. This enhanced degradation efficiency is attributed to the synergistic effects between the P4VP-mediated charge transfer pathways and the GO/CdSe heterojunction structure, which effectively suppresses photogenerated carrier recombination. The three-dimensional (3D) porous hydrogel architecture further promotes reactive oxygen species generation through improved pollutant adsorption-concentration effects and multiple light-refraction events, underscoring its potential for water treatment applications.

The demand for lightweight, flexible, and transparent encapsulation materials is rapidly increasing with the advancement of flexible and wearable electronics. Yet, achieving a unified balance among mechanical flexibility, optical clarity, and chemical robustness within a single polymer remains difficult. In this work, a compositionally tunable vinyl-terminated silicon-containing polyurethane acrylate (PUA) system was developed by adjusting the polycarbonate diol (PCDL) content to implement the barrier. Then, the PUA-B film was synthesized by copolymerizing PUA and butyl acrylate (BA); this design enabled the fabrication of highly transparent and mechanically resilient films that retained their optical and structural integrity after repeated folding and friction (100 cycles). The optimized PUA-B film exhibited outstanding resistance to acids, alkalis, and solvents, and effectively protected metallic and electrochemical devices from corrosion and failure in harsh environments (for 4 h). These results highlight a design principle for engineering multifunctional polyurethane-based films that combine elasticity, transparency, and environmental endurance, advancing their potential use in next-generation encapsulation and protection of flexible electronic systems.

Epoxy resins (ERs) are frequently employed in high-performing composites for their superior comprehensive performances. However, their inherent brittleness limits broader applications, and current toughening strategies often face a trade-off between strength, toughness, and thermal stability. Herein, we developed a rigid-flexible integrated epoxy toughener (2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzenethiol-grafted diallyl bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, abbreviated as 4FDA), integrating rigid tetrafluorobenzene structure and flexible short alkyl chains into one epoxy monomer. Various contents of 4FDA were used to modify conventional epoxy curing systems. The results show that the 4F-7.5 system achieves simultaneous enhancement of T g -DSC (137.8°C, 7.6°C increase), toughness (7.8% of elongation at break, 43% increase), and tensile strength (91.5 MPa, 17% increase) compared with the unmodified epoxy (EP) system. SEM analysis demonstrates a crazing-shear band toughening mechanism. Furthermore, carbon fiber composites based on the 4F-5 matrix exhibit a 17.1% improvement in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The improved performance is credited to the synergistic effect of π–π F conjugation strengthening effect (from the rigid tetrafluorobenzene structure) and flexible short-chain toughening effect (from flexible short alkyl chains). This work provides a simple, green, and adjustable approach to fabricate high-performing epoxy matrix with balanced thermal and mechanical performances, promising applications in aerospace, automotive, and electronic packaging.

To address the low separation selectivity of nattokinase (NK) in complex biological matrices, a surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) is synthesized for its highly efficient purification. Using vinyl-modified silica microspheres as substrates, a dual-functional monomer system comprising itaconic acid (IA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) is constructed to enhance specific recognition via synergistic hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Key preparation conditions, including the monomer ratio and the crosslinking degree, were systematically optimized, and the effects of pH and ionic strength on adsorption performance were investigated. The results indicated that under the optimal conditions of a 3:1 IA:AMPS molar ratio and a 40% crosslinking degree, the MIP exhibits a uniform core-shell structure with an average diameter of approximately 2.3 μm. The material achieves a saturated adsorption capacity of 82.58 mg g −1 and an imprinting factor (IF) of 2.35. Adsorption is primarily driven by electrostatic interactions, peaking at pH 7.0. The process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics (reaching equilibrium in ~100 min) and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer specific adsorption. Furthermore, the MIP demonstrates preferential adsorption toward NK under the tested conditions and maintains over 90% of its capacity after five reuse cycles, highlighting its preliminary potential for adsorption-based NK enrichment and separation.

Conventional polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) smart windows often exhibit a high degree of global synchronicity and modulation mode singularity in spectral evolution. Here, a bilayer dual-band reflective PSCLC device that enables a four-stage optical modulation and independent regulation of specific infrared wavebands under varying driving voltages is reported. Infrared shielding and electro-optical responsiveness are ensured by optimizing the thiol crosslinker TMPMP content and integrating an electrospun mat loaded with infrared-absorbing Cs 0.33 WO 3 nanoparticles. Building upon the established foundational performance, a partially driven layer and a fully driven layer with distinct driving voltages are constructed and ultimately integrated into a bilayer device. The fabricated device features dual-band selective reflection at 980 nm and 1450 nm, and the synergistic superposition of distinct optical states from the two individual layers under gradient voltages macroscopically demonstrates a non-monotonic, four-level optical response. Notably, the 1450 nm reflection band can be independently switched under applied voltages, completely without interfering with the reflection state at 980 nm. The multi-level and independent optical control capabilities of the integrated device provide a versatile paradigm for advanced dynamic thermal management in next-generation smart windows.

Ethynyl-functionalized polymethacrylates are promising precursors for diverse click reactions, yet their direct preparation from corresponding monomers is often hindered by gelation, low conversion, and low molecular weight. This work reports a novel and straightforward strategy to prepare soluble, high-molecular-weight ethynyl-functionalized polymers via conventional free radical polymerization of disubstituted ethynyl methacrylates. We reveal the α-methyl group selectively suppress 1,2- and 1,3-migrations and prevent the formation of stable low-reactivity allylic radicals, increasing both the monomer conversion and molecular weight. Specifically, with the α-methyl group, the monomer conversion reaches up to 86.2%, and number-average molecular weight ( M n ) exceeds 14,000 Da, whereas the corresponding ethynyl acrylates yielded only 14.8%–17.8% conversion and M n = 3,900–4,200 Da. The α-methyl effect mechanism is further supported by ab initio calculations, 13 C-NMR, and ESR spectroscopy. The resulting polymers retain reactive ethynyl groups and undergo efficient thiol-yne click reactions with approximately 80% conversion of C≡C bonds within 6 s under UV irradiation. This work establishes the α-methyl effect in controlling polymerization pathways of acetylenic (meth)acrylates and offers a new routine toward polymerization of functional (meth)acrylate monomers with high conversion and molecular weight.

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is a promising supercapacitor anode due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost, and eco-friendliness, yet its application is hindered by poor conductivity and structural instability. Herein, a unique Fe 2 O 3 composite encapsulated within a polyaniline-derived N, S, Cu-doped carbon layer was fabricated on carbon cloth via an integrated method involving hydrothermal growth, Cu 2+ -catalyzed electrodeposition, and carbonization. This conformal carbon sheath acts as a synergistic conductive network, mechanical buffer, and source of active sites. The optimized Fe 2 O 3 /CN electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517.15 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and dramatically enhanced cycling stability with 92.48% retention after 5000 cycles, far exceeding pure Fe 2 O 3 (51.15%). The assembled solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (Fe 2 O 3 /CN@CC//PANI@CC) delivers an energy density of 33.82 Wh kg −1 at 737.5 W kg −1 and maintains 87.57% capacity after 5000 cycles. This work demonstrates an effective polymer-derived carbon coating strategy for developing durable, high-performance metal oxide-based electrodes.

Superwetting materials are increasingly used in the field of oil/water separation due to their special surface wettability. Herein, a single-layer superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic material was rapidly prepared by ultrasound-assisted and seed-mediated growth methods using nickel foam (NF) as the carrier, polydopamine (PDA) as the binder, and HKUST-1 as the filler. Two sheets of modified NF were then laminated into a bilayer HKUST-1/PDA/NF composite and used for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions. The sonication time and HKUST-1 seed content were optimized during the preparation process, and their effects on the underwater surface wettability, separation flux, and efficiency were thus investigated. The as-prepared NF composite also exhibited remarkable antifouling performance and excellent thermal and chemical stability. Additionally, the unique three-dimensional structure of NF enabled its robust and wear-resistant property. After ultrasonication for about 1 h and 25 mechanical abrasions, the underwater superoleophobic angle still remained above 150°. More notably, under gravity drive, the as-prepared composite demonstrated superior separation efficiency above 98% for each of the selected oil-in-water emulsions. The developed method may offer a fast and facile approach to fabricate stable, chemically and mechanically robust materials with underwater superoleophobicity for the treatment of oily wastewater.

A high loading conductive filler is typically required to reach the percolation threshold for composites; however, it leads to a decline in the material's physical and mechanical properties. Here, the conductive hydrogel (PAC-Ag-H-G) with a high-quality 3D interconnected network contained silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (HCNT), and graphene (G) in the matrix of polyacrylic acid/chitosan (PAC) was fabricated. PAC-Ag-H-G showed stretchable properties, good toughness, and breaking strength fatigue resistance. Most importantly, thanks to the 3D interconnected network formed by the vertex-edge-face structure of Ag NPs-HCNT-G, the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel is significantly enhanced with the minimal addition of only 0.2% (relative to AA) of HCNT and GO, respectively. The conductivity of PAC-Ag-H-G1 is 4.27 times that of PAC. It had steady biological or non-biological adhesion and could sensitively detect human joint movements. Additionally, this hydrogel exhibited excellent antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria ( S.aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria ( E.coli ). PAC-Ag-H-G conductive hydrogel is expected to adhere directly to the human body or the humanoid robot joint bearings for flexible motion monitoring.

Trimetallic catalysis provides a potential route for the one-pot production of multimodal PE with balanced mechanical and processing properties. Herein, a series of CrO x /VO x /CpCr/SiO 2 trimetallic catalysts are constructed by grafting CrCp 2 onto a CrO x /VO x /SiO 2 with tunable CrCp 2 loadings and benchmarked against mono- and bimetallic catalysts. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful CrCp 2 immobilization, and the catalyst containing 0.25 wt% CrCp 2 exhibited the highest productivity. Owing to the distinct H 2 sensitivities of the three active sites, both molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) can be efficiently regulated through CrCp 2 loading and H 2 partial pressure, enabling the synthesis of tri- or broad-modal PE in a single reactor. Compared with unimodal PE of comparable MW, the trimodal PE exhibited lower melt viscosity and an improved stiffness-toughness balance.

This study developed a novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane using vacuum-assisted deposition and surface chemical crosslinking by integrating MXene nanosheets with a tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) crosslinked network onto a PVDF substrate. A series of tests were conducted to characterize the chemical structure and surface morphology of the membranes, as well as to measure the concentrations of dye wastewater and saline solutions before and after filtration. The results showed that the introduction of the phenol-amine network altered the surface properties of the MXene layers, reducing the water contact angle to 49.8° and resulting in a negative zeta potential in the pH range 4–10. The optimized TFN-2 membrane achieved 100% removal of cationic dyes (methylene blue, malachite green, crystal violet), with rejection rates of 98.52%, 97.12%, and 100% for methylene blue, Congo red, and Coomassie brilliant blue G, respectively, and also exhibited certain salt ion rejection capability. Moreover, the introduction of the phenol-amine network significantly enhanced the oxidative stability of MXene. The TFN-2 membrane maintained stable flux and removal efficiency during 12 h of continuous operation and retained excellent separation performance after 90 days of storage. This study provides a new approach for developing high-performance separation membranes.
