Self-limited conversion of MoO2 into ultramicro MoS2 nanosheets on graphene/CNTs matrix for hydrogen evolution with excellent stability

Jingyang Tian,Jiaxin Li,Anlin Feng,Xinran Han,Yuancai Lv,Mingyang Ma,Chong Lin

Current research on MoS2/graphene hybrids for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reveals that there is still a huge challenge due to restacking and the scarcity of active sites. In this work, ultramicro MoS2 nanosheets with good dispersion and rich active sites are vertically grown on graphene via a self-limited growth strategy (S–MoS2). Moreover, carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds can effectively limit the restacking of graphene and MoS2, accelerating the transport of electrons and electrolytes. The synergism among the multi-function structures and composition control can improve the electrochemical HER activity. The obtained S–MoS2/rGO/CNTs exhibits a low overpotential of 159 mV (vs. RHE) at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 85 mV dec−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4. Moreover, the S–MoS2/rGO/CNTs shows excellent electrochemical durability at 10 mA cm−2 for 18 h. This work supplies a fresh strategy to design high-performance and cost-effective MoS2-based catalysts for the HER.

MOF-derived nanoporous carbon/Co/Co3O4/CNTs/RGO composite with hierarchical structure as a high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorber

Yan Wang,Xiaochuang Di,Xinming Wu,Xuanhua Li

Lightweight and high-efficiency electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption are two key factors in the research of new-type absorbers, which could be obtained by regulating the component, structure, or suitable impedance matching. In this paper, a nanoporous carbon/Co/Co 3 O 4 /carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composite with polyhedral structure was prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis of Co-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF 67). The carbon/Co/Co 3 O 4 /CNTs/RGO composite was composed of carbon polyhedrons, in which Co and Co 3 O 4 particles were encapsulated by carbon polyhedrons and CNTs. With a filler ratio of 20 wt%, this absorber displayed the highest reflection loss (R L ) of −59.2 dB at 11.2 GHz with 2.5 mm thickness and the absorption bandwidth (R L exceeding −10 dB) of 5.7 GHz (12.3–18 GHz) with a thickness of only 2 mm. The outstanding microwave absorption performance of this material results from proper impedance matching, synergistic effect, enhanced interfacial polarizations and interior cavities. This strategy may provide guidance for the manufacture of new-type absorbers with high-efficiency characteristics.

Xiaochun Ma,Han Liu,Chen Chen,Yanjun Liu,Lin Zhang,Bin Xu,Fan Xiao

In this study, In-situ precipitation reaction was used to prepare paraffin@SnO2/CNTs composite phase change materials. The paraffin@SnO2/CNTs composites material were prepared by using paraffin as a phase change core material, and tin dioxide and carbon nanotubes as composite shell materials. The microstructure, chemical composition and crystal phase structure of the composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier infrared spectrum (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal performance and thermal stability of phase change materials were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsule has a core–shell structure with a diameter of 2–5 μm. The encapsulation efficiency of the paraffin@SnO2/CNTs composite was calculated to be 42.94%. The slurry is formed by dispersing microcapsules in water, which not only greatly improves the specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, visible light absorption, but also makes the effective receiving efficiency reach 91.79% at 40 °C, indicating that it is a promising heat transfer working slurry in the field of Direct Absorption Solar Collectors (DASC) system.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Poly-L-Tyrosine/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs Nanocomposites for the Detection of 17β-Estradiol in Wastewater

Miao Guo,Xia Cui,Lu Wang,Ke Yang,Jiameng Xu,Liangwei Yu,Zhimin Luo,Aiguo Zeng,Jia Zhang,Qiang Fu

Achieving direct electrochemical detection of 17β-estradiol (E2) at low concentrations remains a challenge due to the weak electrochemical activity of E2. In this study, we report a simple, cheap and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on nanocomposite for the direct detection of E2 in wastewater. The nanocomposite sensing electrode was developed by electrochemical in situ polymerization. Due to the π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding between poly-L-tyrosine (P(L-tyr)) with E2, we prepared P(L-tyr) electrode based on dopamine-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PDA-CNTs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Then P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE sensing system was obtained. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of fast electron transfer of AuNCs and the signal amplification effect of PDA-CNTs enables sensitive and direct detection of E2. The results showed that P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE sensor had a linear response to E2 concentration from 0.05 to 10 μmol·l−1 with a detection limit of 7.1 nmol·l−1. Then, the trace amount of E2 in pharmaceutical wastewater samples can be directly detected against several interferences from complex matrix, with recoveries from 91.0 to 107.5%. P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE showed good stability when placed at room temperature. Therefore, it can meet the requirements of the sensitive detection of E2 in complex matrix.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of highly dispersed ZrO2 on CNTs as an efficient catalyst for producing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF)

Shiyun Mu,Kai Liu,Hong Li,Zhenyu Zhao,Xiaoqi Lyu,Yilai Jiao,Xingang Li,Xin Gao,Xiaolei Fan

This work presents an efficient method of supporting zirconia (ZrO 2 ) on COOH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZrO 2 /MWCNTs(C)) via a microwave (MW)-assisted method, which can be used as an efficient catalyst for converting fructose to 5-HMF. The developed composite by the MW-assisted route shows highly dispersed ZrO 2 with small sizes of 4–5 nm on the carbon support, which could not be achieved the conventional hydrothermal synthesis. Characterization shows a unique zirconia amorphous structure which was ascribed to the special interaction between the carbon support and MW irradiation. Specifically, MWCNTs were heated selectively due to their strong MW-absorbing ability, which led to the formation of microscopic “hot spots”, enabling rapid synthesis (8 min) of highly dispersed ZrO 2 with smaller sizes on the hot surface of MWCNTs. Conversely, under conventional heating, the nucleation rate of ZrO 2 was slow and prone to form agglomerated particles on the carbon support. The amorphous ZrO 2 contributed to the excellent activity of ZrO 2 /MWCNTs(C) in fructose conversion to 5-HMF. In detail, fructose conversion and 5-HMF yield were achieved at ~72.8% and ~62.9%, respectively, for the catalyst prepared by the MW method, whilst they are only about 24.7% and 15.7% over the catalyst prepared by the conventional hydrothermal synthesis.

Mutual promotion by structural design and intrinsic activity coupling of CNTs/MoC/CoNiMo for water splitting and urea electrolysis

Xuesong Liu,Kuan Deng,Peng Liu,Xingbin Lv,Wen Tian,Kui Ma,Hongjiao Li,Junyi Ji

Construction of durable multi-function electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is still highly challenging. Herein, we report a hierarchical integrated tri-functional heterogeneous CNTs/MoC/CoNiMo electrode for HER and related OER/UOR. The carbon-protected Ni nanoparticles yield abundant γ-NiOOH active intermediates to boost OER/UOR, while DFT calculations verify Mo migration induced by MoC and CoNiMo alloy under negative potentials generates HER super-active sites on Mo-rich surfaces. Additionally, the parallel aligned nanosheets with out-plane extended CNTs arrays can guide the rapid bubbles release and expand the accessible surface area. Therefore, the optimized CNT/MoC/NMC-3 electrode can achieve overpotentials of 51 mV (HER) and 226 mV (OER), with low potential threshold of 1.257 V (UOR) at 10 mA cm –2 . Moreover, the assembled symmetric urea electrolyzer reaches a 1.291 V cell voltage at 10 mA cm –2 . This work provides a novel strategy for heterostructure multi-component integration for achieving high-efficiency hydrogen production and urea-containing wastewater purification.

Fabricating the ternary CeO2@CNTs/CdSe composite with synchronously enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic activity toward water-soluble pollutants removal

Liang Li,Shao-zhong Hu,Ting Huang,Nan Zhang,Yong Wang

Constructing heterogeneous catalyst with different bandgaps is a prospect way to realize efficient charge transfer of catalytic redox reaction. Semiconductor-based catalyst as a prospective material can effectively solve sewage issues under light irradiation, but the efficiency is greatly influenced by the recombination rate of photoelectrons and holes. In this work, cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) were grown in-situ on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which can maintain the pollutant removal efficiency of pure CeO 2 NPs and enhance the adsorption intensity under visible light for CeO 2 @CNTs composite. Furthermore, the introduction of cadmium selenide (CdSe) was conducive to establish built-in electronic field in the ternary CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe catalyst, which effectively enhanced the catalytic activity of CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe. In comparison to CNTs, CdSe, CeO 2 and CeO 2 @CNTs composite, the ternary CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe catalyst exhibited higher photocurrent intensity, lower recombination of photoelectrons and holes (e - /h + ) pairs, indicating much better photocatalytic activity. CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe as photocatalyst displayed excellent adsorption ability for Congo red (CR), which contributed to increase the transparency of reaction solution and improve the utilization rate to light, the evaluated degradation efficiency of CR achieved 83.58 % and the reduction ratio of Cr(VI) was nearly 100 %. This work confirms that CeO 2 @CNTs/CdSe composite with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic ability is a promising photocatalyst material in wastewater treatment.

Confined dissipation cage in dual-shell structured Ti3C2Tx@CNTs/Ni hollow spheres for lightweight and broadband electromagnetic wave absorption

Yuxiao Yang,Xiaolei Liu,Jianyun Zhao,Xin Jia,Zhiwei Li,Chunhui Xiao,Jiuhong Wang,Yinhuan Li,Jin Liang,Shujiang Ding,Wei Yu

Ti 3 C 2 T x can dissipate energy well due to its high conductivity, but at the expense of severe electromagnetic (EM) wave reflection, which is exacerbated by self-stacking. Despite various attempts to tackle this problem, the excessive isolation of Ti 3 C 2 T x and massive high-density inorganic components render these designs unfavorable for lightweight and broadband absorption. Meanwhile, improvements in absorption performance are related to active surface and polarization interface expansion, as well as conductive path reconstruction, but the main contributing factor remains unknown. In this work, the dual-shell structured Ti 3 C 2 T x @CNTs/Ni-HS (hollow sphere) composites are fabricated. This structure creates a confined dissipation cage, where the CNTs/Ni shell confines the electron transfer among spheres and prevents self-restacking and the tightly contacted Ti 3 C 2 T x shell forms an uninterrupted conductive path for effective dissipation. Therefore, Ti 3 C 2 T x @CNTs/Ni-HS-1 exhibits a broad effective absorption band of 6.1 GHz and a minimum reflection loss of −64.6 dB at a mass ratio of only 15 wt%. Importantly, when hollow structure cracks, although large active surface and polarizable interface remain, the absorption capacity of fragmented Ti 3 C 2 T x @CNTs/Ni-HS-1 deteriorates, indicating rational conductive path in confined dissipation cage is the main factor in achieving excellent performance. This work provides new insight for the rational design of high-performance absorbers.

Monodispersed bi-metallic phosphide anchoring on CNTs with enhanced stability and electrocatalytic HER performance at a wide PH range

Chenglong Xie,Xinxin Zhang,Haitao Yu,Ying Xie

Designing efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for water splitting was critical for efficient, sustainable energy conversion. Here, a one-pot hot-colloidal route was adopted to synthesize the mono-dispersed NiCoP catalyst with a particle size of∼5.0 nm. To further improve the structural stability and electronic conductivity of the catalysts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced. The theoretical calculations suggested that a synergistic effect between Ni and Co in the NiCoP catalyst not only leads to an obvious charge redistribution but also facilitates the electron transfer from the surface to the reactant intermediates, being responsible for the optimal ΔG H* of the catalyst. As a result, NiCoP/CNTs exhibited good HER performance both in acidic and alkaline electrolytes . The overpotentials under alkaline and acidic electrolytes were 110 mV and114 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. In comparison with pristine Ni 2 P(Co 2 P), the overpotential of NiCoP/CNTs in acidic and alkaline electrolytes was reduced by 50(24) and 62(30) mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Even at the current densities of 50 and 200 mA cm −2 , NiCoP/CNTs still retains a much lower overpotential than other samples. Our results revealed the important roles of the synergistic effect between the transition metals and the interaction between CNTs and the phosphides, which provides some useful information for the design and optimization of relevant HER catalysts.

Flexible graphite films with high cross-plane thermal conductivity prepared by graphitization of polyimide catalyzed by Ni-coated-CNTs

Shuaizhen Li,Zhibo Zheng,Siwei Liu,Zhenguo Chi,Yi Zhang,Jiarui Xu

Graphite films are widely used in microelectronic devices as heat-dissipation materials due to their high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient and lightweight. In the 5G era, the miniaturization and integration of microelectronic devices are continuously improving, so there are higher requirements for heat-dissipation materials. Therefore, flexible graphite films with high thermal conductivity are urgently needed. In this work, nickel-coated CNTs (Ni@CNTs) were prepared first as additives to be incorporated into the PI matrix via in situ polymerization, and then the Ni@CNTs/PI composite films were carbonized and graphitized at high temperature to form graphite films. In this composite system, nickel particles can effectively improve the graphitization degree of the obtained graphite films, which is beneficial to the improvement of their thermal conductivity, as well as the CNTs can effectively enhance the cross-plane thermal conductivity and mechanical strength of the graphite films. The graphite films obtained from the graphitization of PI/Ni@CNTs (0.4 wt%) have a perfect graphene structure and optimal properties. The optimal layer thickness of graphene is 0.3354 nm, while the d-spacing of the graphite layers is around 0.3358 nm. The in-plane thermal conductivity is 1.13 times greater than that of the graphite film made from the pure PI film (G0 film), which has a value of 1198.5 W m−1 K−1. The cross-plane thermal conductivity is 6.26 W m−1 K−1, which is 2.96 times that of the G0 film (2.11 W m−1 K−1). The bending strength is 72.3 Mpa, which is 2.28 times that of the G0 film (31.7 Mpa). The introduction of Ni@CNTs greatly improves the comprehensive properties of graphite films, and the preparation technology has an important guiding significance for the preparation of high thermal conductivity flexible graphite films and important industrial application value.

Electro-reduction induced fast metal redox cycle on Co3O4-CuO@CNTs/Copper foam cathode for enhanced Fenton-like reaction

Lu Cui,Di Wu,Xiaomei Liu,Yang Li,Xiaobin Fan,Fengbao Zhang,Guoliang Zhang,Wenchao Peng

In this study, free-standing Co 3 O 4 -CuO/CF electrodes are synthesized via an electrodeposition-annealing process and then protected by dip-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The obtained Co 3 O 4 -CuO@CNTs/CF is employed as cathode to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) in an electrochemical system. The electrochemical assistant (EA) plays a critical role to accelerate metal redox by donating electrons sustainably, and the fast regeneration of Co 2+ /Cu + could be achieved to promote chemical-catalysis for PMS activation, which is proved via the pre-electroreduction treatment. The rate constant of Co 3 O 4 -CuO@CNTs/CF/PMS system with EA is ∼ 4.4 times compared to the system without EA. It also exhibits an excellent stability, which could still remove over 90% of BPA after eight cycles in 45 min. In addition, the coating of CNTs could decrease leaching of metals effectively. According to quenching tests and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR), the presence of EA could enhance the radical route by producing more SO 4 •− and •OH greatly, which is also proved by much faster degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) and atrazine (ATZ) than that without EA. This work reveals activation mechanism of PMS in the electrochemical system, and provides an effective strategy to achieve the fast metal redox cycle for effective and long-term pollutant degradation.

A facile layer-by-layer fabrication of three dimensional MoS2-rGO-CNTs with high performance for hydrogen evolution reaction

Junying Huang,Mengting Chen,Xiaojun Li,Xiaowen Zhang,Liyun Lin,Weipeng Liu,Yingju Liu

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), although considered as a promising transition metal dichalcogenides catalyst, owns low plane conductivity that limits its effective application. In this work, we grew monodispersed MoS 2 nanoflakes on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and then assembled the resulting MoS 2 -rGO with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a layer-by-layer manner to form the MoS 2 -rGO-CNTs composite. The CNTs spacing layer not only reduces the whole catalytic material's resistance by bridging different broken MoS 2 -rGO nanosheets , but also constructs a three-dimensional structure to prevent 2D MoS 2 -rGO nanosheets restacking and thus increases the active sites. Such three-dimensional MoS 2 -rGO-CNTs catalyst exhibited a low Tafel slope of 39 mV dec −1 and a high current density of 1200 mA cm −2 at −400 mV. Therefore, our study showed a cheap and simple method to combine three-dimensional hybrid material, facilitating the large-scale application of non-noble catalyst.
