Bottom-up synthesis of MOF-derived magnetic Fe-Ce bimetal oxide with ultrahigh phosphate adsorption performance

Shaoxia Yang,Qing Wang,Huazhang Zhao,Daoqing Liu

The intrinsic properties of metal-based adsorbents originate from multiples factors such as surface functional groups, electronic and dimensional structures. However, the synthetic strategies are limited to top-down methods, which inhibited the improvement of adsorbent performance. Herein, Fe-Ce bimetal oxide composites are prepared by a bottom-up modified MOF template method. MOF template-directed nano rod-like morphology can expose more active sites and facilitate phosphate access to active sites. The introduction of citric acid effectively increased the amount of surface –OH groups and greatly improved the phosphate adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the Fe dopant enables the high Ce(III) fraction and generate magnetic property for Fe-Ce bimetal oxide composites, which are capable of enhancing the intrinsic phosphate adsorption performance. The results show that the optimized Fe-Ce bimetal adsorbent showed remarkably high phosphate adsorption capacity, achieving a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 357 mg g −1 by Langmuir model. High adsorption capacity and high magnetic separation efficiency characteristics make this adsorbent a promising material for phosphate treatment. The above results further prove the effectiveness of the bottom-up strategy in the design process of environmental functional materials.

Effective mineralization of p-nitrophenol in water by heterogeneous catalytic ozonation using Ce-loaded sepiolite catalyst

Zhengjun Qu,Xiaoshen Xu,Hongfei Ren,Ting Sun,Lihui Huang,Zhenhui Gao

Clay-based composite materials have been widely used for environmental remediation due to their excellent physicochemical properties , however, there are few studies on clay-based composite materials as ozone catalyst carriers. In this study, Ce-loaded sepiolite (Ce/SEP) catalyst was synthesized using an impregnation-calcination method. Ce/SEP catalysts had a higher efficiency for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation than sepiolite alone. Among different mass ratios of Ce element to sepiolite (5 % Ce/SEP, 7 % Ce/SEP, 10 % Ce/SEP, and 15 % Ce/SEP), 10 % Ce/SEP showed the best catalytic performance with the mineralization efficiency of p-nitrophenol (PNP) as 71 % that was 1.15, 1.08, and 1.18 times higher than that of 5 % Ce/SEP, 7 % Ce/SEP, and 15 % Ce/SEP, and increased by 30 % compared to that of the ozonation alone. Larger surface area and abundance of strong acid sites of Ce/SEP favored adsorption of ozone molecules on the catalyst surface. High content of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst promoted Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ cycling and subsequently a superior catalytic activity of the Ce/SEP catalyst. In addition, free radical quenching experiments as well as electron spin resonance analysis indicated that hydroxyl radical (∙OH) was the main contributor to the mineralization of PNP in this system. This study provides a novel strategy for the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

Synthesis, structure and property studies of a new series of rare earth (Ce, Tb) bismuth silicates

Ce Tao,Jianqiang Li,Rukang Li

A new series of rare earth bismuth silicates has been synthesized by flux method and solid state reaction . LnBiSiO 5 (Ln = Ce, Tb) crystallizes in a triclinic space group P -1 with cell parameters a  = 5.6763(2) Å, α  = 105.591(3)° b  = 6.7922(3) Å, β  = 110.551(3)° c  = 6.9593(2) Å, γ  = 99.733(3)°, Z = 2. They exhibit a novel three-dimensional structure consisting of zig-zag chains of edge-sharing Ce/TbO 8 polyhedra that are further linked by SiO 4 units and Bi 2 O 8 clusters. The optical band gap (E g ) of TbBiSiO 5 was estimated to be 3.84 eV from UV–Vis-IR diffuse reflectance spectra. Photoluminescence measurements suggest that due to the cooperative interaction of Bi and Tb the excitation bands monitored at 544 nm are shifted towards longer wavelength which may favor commercial UV diode excitation. The magnetic measurements show that TbBiSiO 5 exhibits paramagnetic behavior without magnetic transitions down to 1.8 K.

Synthesis of core–shell Ce-modified mixed metal oxides derived from P123-templated layered double hydroxides

Kaijun Wang,Qifan Mao,Weimin Fei,Lingxin Kong,Xiaoyan Cao,Zhenggui Gu

Layered double hydroxides are a promising platform material which can be combined with a variety of active species based on their characteristic features. Silicon@P123-templated Ce-doped layered double hydroxide (SiO2@CeMgAl-LDH(P123)) composites were synthesized via a facile in situ co-precipitation method, and characterized by TEM, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, XPS, CO2-, etc. in detail. Meanwhile, the calcined powder (SiO2@CeMgAl-LDO(P123)) possessed an excellent core–shell structure and a high surface area inherited from the LDH structure, which led to an outstanding catalytic activity (99.7% conversion of propylene oxide, 92.4% selectivity of propylene glycol methyl ether) under mild reaction conditions (120 °C). Cerium oxide provides a large number of oxygen vacancies and significantly improves the medium basic strength of the material, which facilitates the selective ring-opening of PO. Furthermore, the introduction and removal of P123 make the cerium oxide uniformly dispersed on the LDH layers, providing more reaction sites for the reaction of methanol and propylene oxide. The core–shell structure prepared by the in situ co-precipitation method could solve the shortcomings of agglomeration of layered double hydroxides and prolong the catalytic life evidently.

Highly dispersed Fe–Ce mixed oxide catalysts confined in mesochannels toward low-temperature oxidation of formaldehyde

Jianwei Fan,Xufei Niu,Wei Teng,Peng Zhang,Wei-xian Zhang,Dongyuan Zhao

Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is regarded as a promising strategy to eliminate this indoor air pollutant. The design of a highly active and cost-effective catalyst is still pivotal to improve the performance for HCHO oxidation. Herein, we report an Fe–Ce–O solid solution catalyst supported on ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) prepared by simple two-step impregnation–calcination, achieving highly efficient HCHO elimination at a low temperature. This strategy brings about the formation of small solid solution nanoparticles (7–12.9 nm) with good dispersion in confined spaces. Meanwhile, the catalysts possess large surface areas (∼500 m2 g−1) and pore volumes (0.5 cm3 g−1) with a pore size of ∼7.5 nm. The results show that Fe content and calcination temperature have great effects on the generation of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst, and further on the catalytic performance. The 20% FeOx-CeOx/SBA-15-350 catalyst displays superior catalytic activity with 65% and 94.9% conversion at 30 °C and 60 °C with a low concentration of HCHO (9.8 μg L−1), respectively, comparable to that for many reported precious metal catalysts. The high ratio of Ce3+ due to the formation of an Fe–Ce–O solid solution and highly dispersed active sites by the spatial confinement is favorable for more oxygen vacancy generation, which mainly contributes to the excellent performance. This work opens up an avenue to design highly efficient non-noble metal nanocatalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) elimination.

Preparation of magnetic Fe3O4@Cu/Ce microspheres for efficient catalytic oxidation co-adsorption of arsenic(III)

Jin Lin-feng,Chai Li-yuan,Song Ting-ting,Yang Wei-chun,Wang Hai-ying

Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Cu/Ce microspheres were successfully prepared by one-step solvothermal approach and further utilized to remediate toxic arsenic (As(III)) pollution. The effects of Cu/Ce elements co-doping on the crystal structure, catalytic oxidation and adsorption behaviors of magnetic microspheres were researched systematically. The results showed that with the aid of Cu/Ce elements, the grain size reduced, lattice defects increased, and the oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups were improved. Therefore, Cu/Ce elements endowed magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Cu/Ce microspheres with excellent As(III) removal performance, whose maximum adsorption capacity reached 139.19 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism mainly involved catalytic oxidant co-adsorption. This research developed a feasible strategy for the preparation of high efficiency magnetic adsorbent to enhance the removal of As(III).

Comparative study of La1–xCexMnO3+δ perovskites and Mn–Ce mixed oxides for NO catalytic oxidation

Baohuai Zhao,Rui Ran,Liu Yang,Xiaodong Wu,Zhichun Si,Duan Weng

A series of La 1– x Ce x MnO 3+ δ ( x  = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) perovskites and Mn–Ce mixed oxides were prepared. Their physico-chemical properties were systematically characterized and the NO oxidation activities of the catalysts were investigated. The La 0.9 Ce 0.1 MnO 3+ δ has the best activity among all of the catalysts, with a maximum NO conversion of 85% at 300 °C. The characterization results indicate that the doping of Ce improves the properties of the perovskites in terms of the specific surface area, the average valence state of Mn ions, the number of reactive oxygen species and the NO x desorption behaviors. The Mn–Ce mixed oxide calcined at 500 °C shows a similar NO oxidation activity with La 0.9 Ce 0.1 MnO 3+ δ . However, the activity of the mixed oxide obtained at 750 °C decreases a lot, which results from the loss of active sites and active oxygen species.

The reaction behaviors of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate simultaneous degradation over Cu–Ce/ZSM–5 catalyst

Yaoyu Zhang,Yuxiong Wang,Yue Liu,Huimin Xu,Zhongbiao Wu

Aiming at the coexistence of pollutants in the actual industrial process, the catalytic oxidation of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate mixture on the Cu–Ce/ZSM–5 catalyst was studied. The mutual inhibition effect during catalytic removal of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate mixture was observed. Acetonitrile showed a more obvious inhibitory effect on the conversion of ethyl acetate, and the introduction of ethyl acetate reduced the N 2 selectivity of acetonitrile oxidation. The simulation results demonstrated acetonitrile could be preferentially adsorbed on Cu center of the catalyst surface, leading to significant inhibition of the initial conversion of ethyl acetate. In addition, the coexistence of ethyl acetate would weaken the hydrolysis of acetonitrile to generate carboxylic acid and –NH x species. As such, no enough adsorbed NH x species could be used to reduce the NO x produced by excessive oxidation of acetonitrile, resulting in a decreased in N 2 selectivity. This study could provide reference on the application of catalysts for cyanide–containing waste gas degradation.

Constructing a low-cost total Ce(III)-based adsorbent for efficient removal and recovery of phosphate

Tao Zhang,Junle Li,Dongqing Liu,Yuling Ma,Yu Han,Sujie Shan,Kai Sun,Elena V. Zelinskaya,Aijie Wang,Hongliang Sun,Wei Wang

Under the dual challenges of water eutrophication and phosphorus deficiency, efficient adsorbents are urgently needed to remove and recover excess phosphate. However, the highly regarded cerium-based adsorbent has become the main difficulty limiting its large-scale application due to its high energy consumption and uncontrollable valence state in the synthesis process. To address this issue, we synthesized a composite cross-linked framework adsorbent (CCFA) using a simple coprecipitation method for application as a novel phosphate trap. Due to the realization of 100 % Ce(III) acquisition, CCFA exhibited a high adsorption capacity of up to 289.18 mg-P/g·Ce, 1.5 to 2 times higher than existing cerium-based adsorbents. At the same time, the introduction of sepiolite not only improved the utilization efficiency of the active sites, resulting in a high P/Ce molar ratio of 1.31, but also enhanced the resistance to pH interference, with the adsorption capacity only decreasing by 16.5 % in the presence of strong alkali (pH = 11). In addition, CCFA exhibited a wide range of adaptability, excellent phosphate recovery potential, and the prospect of large-scale application, making it a promising adsorbent for wastewater phosphate.

Separation and detection of amino acid metabolites of Escherichia coli in microbial fuel cell with CE

Wei Wang,Lihong Ma,Ping Lin,Kaixuan Xu

In this work, CE-LIF was employed to investigate the amino acid metabolites produced by Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in microbial fuel cell (MFC). Two peptides, l -carnosine and l -alanyl-glycine, together with six amino acids, cystine, alanine, lysine, methionine, tyrosine, arginine were separated and detected in advance by a CE-LIF system coupled with a homemade spontaneous injection device. The injection device was devised to alleviate the effect of electrical discrimination for analytes during sample injection. All analytes could be completely separated within 8 min with detection limits of 20–300 nmol/L. Then this method was applied to analyze the substrate solution containing amino acid metabolites produced by E. coli . l -carnosine, l -alanyl-glycine, and cystine were used as the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur source for the E. coli culture in the MFC to investigate the amino acid metabolites during metabolism. Two MFCs were used to compare the activity of metabolism of the bacteria. In the sample collected at the running time 200 h of MFC, the amino acid methionine was discovered as the metabolite with the concentrations 23.3 μg/L.

Crystal Defect Engineering of Aurivillius Bi2MoO6 by Ce Doping for Increased Reactive Species Production in Photocatalysis

Zan Dai,Fan Qin,Huiping Zhao,Jie Ding,Yunling Liu,Rong Chen

Crystal defects have been extensively proved to have great influence on semiconductor photocatalysis. To optimize the reactivity of crystalline photocatalysts and achieve ideal solar energy conversion, crystal defect engineering has initiated a considerable interest in real catalysts. Herein, we develop a general strategy to manufacture and mediate crystal defects in the host Bi2MoO6 lattice by varying the cerium dopant content, resulting in greatly improved visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for the degradation of highly toxic nerve agent simulants (NAS) and organic dyes, as well as bacterial photoinactivation. After careful examination of crystal defect structure and charge carrier dynamics, it was proved that Ce-doping-mediated crystal defects are crucial for controlling the photocatalytic efficiency of aurivillius Bi2MoO6. More importantly, the well-engineered crystal defects not only exert a beneficial influence on the electron dynamics and band structure but also facilitate the one-electron and two-electron reactions by introducing the Ce3+/Ce4+ and Mo4+/Mo6+ redox couples, which results in a significant enhancement in reactive oxygen species (ROS) photogeneration.

Construction of Ce(OH)4 nanostructures from 1D to 3D by a mechanical force-driven method

Ke Tang,Jingcai Zhang,Wenzhi Wang,Shuping Wang,Jinxin Guo,Yanzhao Yang

A simple protocol has been reported here to successfully perform a controllable conversion between Ce(OH)4 nanorods [Ce(OH)4-NR] and Ce(OH)4 nanoflowers [Ce(OH)4-NF] based on a prolonged mechanical force-driven stirring process. Results show that the Ce(OH)4 nanostructures undergo a morphology transformation from the initial nanorods to irregular nanoflowers, then to nanoflowers emanating from one center only, by varying the stirring time before solvothermal reaction. The detailed study confirmed that the mechanical force significantly improved the mass transport of the solution and drove the seeds of Ce(OH)4-NR [seeds-NR] to generate the seeds of Ce(OH)4-NF [seeds-NF]. The final CeO2 products (CeO2 nanorods [CeO2-NR] and CeO2 nanoflowers [CeO2-NF]) that inherited the original morphology were obtained by annealing Ce(OH)4-NR and Ce(OH)4-NF, respectively. To further optimize the performance of the final products, Au/CeO2-NR and Au/CeO2-NF were synthesized by a simple oxidation–reduction process, which led to increased surface areas and promising potential in CO oxidation.
