Ce Single Atom with Cascaded Self-Circulating Enzyme-Like Activities and Photothermal Activities for Cancer Therapy

Jialiang Guo,Mengdie Jin,Yongkang Huang,Leilei Yin,Xiaopeng Li,Yaping Du,Xinyun Zhai

Specific regulation of the tumor microenvironment (TME) is a potential strategy for tumor therapy. Although many TME-responsive nanozymes have been developed for tumor therapy, the limited substrates affect the therapeutic effect. In this study, cerium single-atom nanozymes (Ce SAs) are prepared by immobilizing cerium (Ce) using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a precursor. The reversible conversion between Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ endows Ce SAs with multiple enzyme-like activities, such as peroxidase (POD)-like activity, oxidase (OD)-like activity, catalase (CAT)-like activity, glucose oxidase (GOD)-like activity, and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)-like activity. All of the above enzyme activities give Ce SAs cascade self-circulation properties and can be used for tumor therapy in the TME. In addition, the prepared Ce SAs also have photothermal properties, which can achieve photothermal therapy (PTT) of tumor cells under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Combining the cascade self-cycling enzyme-like activities and the photothermal properties of Ce SAs, this synergistic therapy makes Ce SAs have attractive efficacy in tumor treatment.

High-abundant rare earth La/Ce substituted Nd2Fe14C based permanent magnet materials prepared by mechanochemical method

Xiaoyun Shang,Xiangming Wang,Min Chen,Haoran Tu,Hongguo Zhang,Ming Yue,Xiaobo Du

To balance the utilization of rare-earth resources and reduce the preparation cost, the La and Ce substituted Nd 2 Fe 14 C hard magnetic alloys were prepared by a facile mechanochemical method for the first time. A two-step process is typically employed: 1) Decomposition of hydrocarbon and disproportionation of (Nd 1-x RE x ) 2.5 Fe 14 B 0.08 (RE=La or Ce, x=0–0.3) alloys during high-energy ball milling, Nd+Nd 2 Fe 17 +n-hexane→NdH 2+δ +α-Fe+Fe 7 C 3 ; 2) (Nd, RE) 2 Fe 14 C hard magnetic powders were obtained via the vacuum annealing at 800 °C for 2 min. The phase relation, magnetic properties and microstructural evolution of (Nd, RE) 2 Fe 14 B 0.08 C 0.92 (named Nd-RE-Fe-C-based) alloys were systematically investigated. Substitution of La for x=0.1 Nd in the Nd-RE-Fe-C-based alloy increase the coercivity from 15.6 kOe to 18.6 kOe without reducing the remanence. First-principles calculation was performed to study the mechanism of magnetic properties La and Ce substituted samples. The results showed that La tends to be expelled from 2:14:1 phase to form more minor phases which act as the domain wall pinning center, increasing the coercivity. However, Ce prefers to enter the 2:14:1 phase, diminishing the permanent magnetic properties due to the poor intrinsic magnetic properties. This paper provides a novel viewpoint for the effective utilization of high abundant rare earth and the investigation of low cost Nd 2 Fe 14 C permanent magnet materials.

Investigation of Ternary CuZnM (M = Cr, Ce, Zr, Al) Catalysts in CO2 Hydrogenation for Methanol Synthesis

Jingjing Wang,Peixiang Shi,Jiahao Han,Yuhao Tian,Zhiqiang Yan,Pengcheng Luo,Hongyan Ban,Yanchun Li,Weijie Cai,Guanjing Lin,Zhiqiang Zhai,Congming Li

The hydrogenation of CO2to methanol over Cu-based catalysts is one of the attractive routes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate high-value-added chemicals. Industrial CuZnAl catalysts possess some shortcomings, but various promoters can enhance the activity and durability of Cu-based catalysts for CO2hydrogenation. Herein, we systematically investigated the variations in the physicochemical properties of ternary CuZnM (M: Cr, Ce, Zr, Al) catalysts induced by different promoters, as well as their impact on CO2hydrogenation to methanol. The results demonstrate that the catalytic activity followed the order of CZCr > CZCe > CZZr > CZAl, with CZCr exhibiting the highest stability among them. Combined with XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, TPD, XPS, Raman findings and the experimental results, the smaller Cu particle size was conducive to increasing the CH3OH yield, and the lower Cu+/Cu0ratio exhibited better stability in CO2hydrogenation to methanol reaction. This approach offers theoretical insights and practical solutions for the industrial application of ternary Cu-based catalysts.

Insight into catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene total oxidation over Cu-Ce supported catalyst

Xuan Liang,Jin Zhang,Juntai Tian,Zenghua Xie,Yue Liu,Peng Liu,Daiqi Ye

Herein, three supported catalysts, CuO/Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , and CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , were synthesized by the convenient impregnation method to reveal the effect of CeO 2 addition on catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene oxidation. Compared with CuO/Al 2 O 3 , the T 50 and T 90 (the temperatures at 50% and 90% toluene conversion, respectively) of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 were reduced by 33 and 39 °C, respectively. N 2 adsorption-desorption experiment, XRD, SEM, EDS mapping, Raman, EPR, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, Toluene-TPD, and in-situ DRIFTS were conducted to characterize these catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 could be attributed to its strong copper-cerium interaction and high oxygen vacancies concentration. Moreover, in-situ DRIFTS proved that CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 promoted the conversion of toluene to benzoate and accelerated the deep degradation path of toluene. This work provided valuable insights into the development of efficient and economical catalysts for volatile organic compounds.

Menthol-Based Extraction of Fragile Wooden Coffin Lid (7–10th Centuries CE) in Laboratory Archaeology Excavation

Yong Liu,Jiake Chen,Cunxin Li,Xiangna Han,Hao Wang,Jinsong Bai,Xiaohua Liu

Block lifting is a key step in stabilizing and removing fragile remains at archaeological excavation sites. Due to its favorable working properties and adhesive effect, menthol has recently been proposed as a volatile binding medium for temporary consolidation in archaeological conservation. This paper presents a case study on the use of menthol in the extraction and restoration of a large wooden coffin lid, approximately 1.9 m long and 0.9 m wide, from tomb 11 (M11) at Xie’ertala, located east of a Xie’ertala town in Hailar City, Inner Mongolia, dating to the 7th to 10th centuries CE. This coffin lid had fragmented into numerous wooden pieces, and was preserved in a relatively arid steppe environment, necessitating the extraction of the lid as a consolidated block. The use of menthol for consolidating and lifting the highly fragmented wooden coffin lid was intended to preserve critical archaeological information while avoiding damage to the underlying objects. An analysis of the physicochemical properties of these wooden remains suggests that the timber used for the coffin lid belongs to a common pine species from the Hulunbuir region. The degradation of the coffin lid was relatively mild, as shown by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results. Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) tests indicated that the hygroscopicity of the archaeological wood was 23.4%, compared to 21.1% for the reference sample, demonstrating good environmental stability. The safety of menthol as a treatment for fragile wooden remains was evaluated by comparing changes in the morphological and porosity characteristics of the coffin lid before and after menthol treatment. After treatment, the widths of the fissures remained largely unchanged, with all relative variations being less than 1%, and the porosity as well as pore size distribution of the wood showed negligible changes. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) results showed that only 0.6% of menthol residue remained after 8 days of sublimation. This pilot study demonstrates that menthol is a safe temporary consolidant for block lifting and offers a promising alternative to the widely used cyclododecane. In conclusion, this research provided a new approach for conservators to safely lift similarly large and fragile wood remains during archaeological excavations.

Bifunctional Tb(III)-modified Ce-MOF nanoprobe for colorimetric and fluorescence sensing of α-glucosidase activity

Yi Xiao,Pengcheng Huang,Fang-Ying Wu

α-Glucosidase, which directly involves in the metabolism of starch and glycogen and causes an increase in blood sugar level, is the major target enzyme for the precaution and therapy of type II diabetes. Based on the previous work, we adopted a post-synthetic modification method to encapsulate Tb 3+ into Ce-MOF nanozyme which owned mixed valence states. Tb@Ce-MOF displayed induced luminescence characteristic and exceptional oxidase-like activity that could oxidize colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB. α-Glucosidase can hydrolyze the substrate l -ascorbic acid-2- O -α- d -glucopyranosyl (AAG) to generate ascorbic acid (AA), which could increase the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox valence mode in Tb@Ce-MOF, leading to the inhibition of the allochroic reaction of TMB and the decreased absorption of ox-TMB at 652 nm. The energy transfer (EnT) process from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ will enhance due to the increased Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ mode in Tb@Ce-MOF, which will result in an enhanced fluorescence signal of Tb@Ce-MOF at 550 nm. But the addition of inhibitor acarbose will inhibit the above process. We have constructed a dual-mode detection platform of α-glucosidase and its inhibitor via colorimetric and fluorometric method. The linear range of α-glucosidase were 0.01–0.5 U/mL (colorimetric mode) and 0.8–1.5 U/mL (fluorometric mode), respectively, with a detection limit as low as 0.0018 U/mL. Furthermore, our approach was also successfully employed to the analysis of α-glucosidase in serum samples.

Stabilizing zinc anodes for dual-membrane Zn-Ce redox flow battery via constructing zincophilic protective layer

Lei Zhou,Yating Wu,Yangyang Xie,Jian Li,Xuxia Zhang,Kejia Liu,Hui Zhang,Tao Qi

The development of large-scale grid storage systems has increased interest in redox flow batteries due to their flexible design characteristics, which can help overcome the intermittency of renewable energy. Zn-Ce redox flow battery is considered as one of the most promising redox flow batteries due to its high voltage and low cost. However, using Zn metal anodes in this context remains problematic due to issues with corrosion and dendrite growth, as well as electrolyte incompatibility, which limits their cycling performance and practical application. Herein, an indium-based protective layer is constructed on the Zn anode cooperating with a dual-membrane cell configuration to solve these problems. Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, the zincophilic indium protective layer can effectively prevent electrolyte corrosion as well as regulate the behavior of Zn plating and stripping. Moreover, a dual-membrane cell configuration is used to mitigate electrolyte incompatibility since it uses specified ions as charge carriers and blocks the infamous H + poisoning on the zinc side. The cell exhibits a high discharge voltage plateau of 2.2 V at 20 mA cm −2 and maintains a high average energy efficiency of 84.39 % over 80 cycles. This work presents a practical method to enhance the cycling performance of the Zn-Ce battery by incorporating an In-based protective layer with a dual-membrane cell configuration, resulting in unparalleled efficiency and stability.

Promotional effect and mechanism of Ce-modified V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst in low-temperature NH3-SCR

You Mengyun,Wu Shufeng,Feng Xiaotong,Zhao Yong,Wang Yubin,Zhang Zhang

The enhancement effect of Ce modification on V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalysts at low temperatures was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). By adding 9% CeO 2 to 0.5%V 2 O 5 -3%WO 3 /TiO 2 catalyst, the low-temperature denitrification performance of Ce 9 V 0.5 W 3 Ti catalyst after Ce modification was significantly improved, achieving a NO conversion above 90% within a broad temperature range of 200–350℃, with catalytic activity comparable to that of 3% V 2 O 5 -3% WO 3 /TiO 2 . The catalysts were characterized by XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 , and NO-TPD. The results indicated that the Ce additive could enhance the adsorption of NO x on Ce 9 V 0.5 W 3 Ti catalyst due to the synergetic interaction among the Ce and V, W species. The interaction between V and Ce also promoted the formation of V 5+ and Ce 3+ on the surface of the catalyst, which was conducive to enhancing the adsorption and oxidation capacity of the catalyst for NO. Additionally, the introduction of Ce led to a substantial deposition of nitrate species on the surface of the catalyst, especially the increase of nitrite species, which was beneficial to the NH 3 -SCR reaction process, resulting in a significant enhancement of the catalyst’s low-temperature catalytic activity.

Enhanced steam gasification of lignin to generate H2-enriched syngas over a (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst

Wenzhe Zhang,Shanshan Dai,Yong Liu,Jie Li,Guozhang Chang,Cuiping Wang,Jian Zhang

The utilization of industrially generated lignin is an important aspect of achieving worldwide carbon neutrality. In this study, Ni/CaO, Ce/CaO and (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalysts were prepared using an impregnation method to improve the production of H 2 -enriched syngas from lignin steam gasification. Results show that the Ni/CaO and Ce/CaO exhibited different effects when applied to steam gasification, the former improved the conversion of solid lignin whereas the latter promoted decomposition of the resulting volatiles. The (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst provided a remarkable synergistic effect on production of H 2 -enriched syngas. The mass-based yield of gaseous products and the volume-based proportion of H 2 in these products were respectively 70.8% and 61.1% in the presence of the (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst with a Ni-to-Ce molar ratio of 1:0.9. The H 2 yields obtained from this material were found to gradually decrease from 763 to 681 mL/(g lignin) during five repeated uses. This gradual deactivation of the (Ni-Ce)/CaO catalyst was ascribed to both carbon deposition and the formation of CaSO 4 by reactions between sulfur in the lignin ash and the CaO component.

A Novel Substrate-Free Ultrathin Cyan-Emitting Phosphor-Glass Composite Based on Ce-Activated Ca2YAlGa2Si2O12 Microcrystal

Yimin Zhou,Fei Tang,Chenyang Li,Xinzhe Fang,Xuan Li,Jia Xiao,Guowei Du,Shijie Xu

The substrate-free ultrathin phosphor-glass composite (PGC) provides significant advantages for all-inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), offering enhanced resistance to light radiation and chemical corrosion. However, achieving a PGC thickness below 100 µm remains challenging due to its brittle nature. Herein, this work presents a novel strategy to fabricate an ultrathin cyan PGC for all-inorganic LEDs, based on our home-synthesized Ce-activated Ca 2 YAlGa 2 Si 2 O 12 phosphor (CYAGS:Ce). The phosphor emits bright cyan light centered at λ em 497 nm with a FWHM of 93 nm and an internal quantum yield (IQY) greater than 60%. The luminescence mechanism, including concentration and thermal quenching, is investigated in detail. Using tape-casting and low-temperature co-firing, an ultrathin PGC with a thickness of 98 µm is achieved. Structural and luminescence properties are compared to highlight the glass matrix's influence. Furthermore, based on as-prepared ultrathin PGCs, a compact LEDs with a low correlated color temperature (CCT, 3384 K) and high color-rendering index (CRI, R a = 85.7) is obtained by integrating both red and cyan PGCs with a commercial 420 nm blue chip. This work advances the understanding of CYAGS:Ce cyan phosphor and provides a versatile strategy for fabricating ultrathin PGCs, highlighting their potential applications in all-inorganic LED lighting.
