Study of co-promotion mechanism of Zr-Mn co-doped CaO-based composite for solar thermochemical energy storage

Huajing Zhang,Chao Xu,Xiangyu Sun,Bowen Xu,Zhirong Liao,Huawei Liu

Ca-based materials are considered to be promising energy storage materials for the 3rd generation concentrated solar power (CSP) plants due to their high energy storage density , high operating temperature , and low energy loss . However, the poor cyclic stability, low solar absorption capability, and slow reaction kinetics of conventional Ca-based materials seriously limit large-scale applications. Here, we successfully synthesized a Zr-Mn co-doped CaO-based composite, achieving good cyclic stability, enhanced solar absorption capability, and fast carbonation reaction kinetics simultaneously. The energy storage performance of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was evaluated at a high carbonation reaction temperature of 850 °C. Results showed that the performance decay of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was only 10.11 % over 30 cycles. By co-doping Zr and Mn elements, the carbonation reaction kinetics of CaO-based composites were promoted because of increased basicity and oxygen vacancies . Compared with pure CaO, the average solar absorptance of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was enhanced by about 376 %. Therefore, the proposed Zr-Mn co-doped CaO-based composite indicates the bright applied prospect in CSP plants for solar energy storage .

Effects of Sintering Pressure and Co Content on the Microstructure and Mechanical Performance of WC–Co Cemented Carbides

Jinhu Ju,Dan Huang,Haitao Xu,Duo Dong,Jiangpeng Lou,Yuan Xu,Jiao Shi,Liu Zhu

The fabrication of WC-based cemented carbides faced challenges including inhomogeneous composition and grain coarsening. To solve these problems, WC–Co cemented carbides were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using core–shell WC–Co powders prepared by an electroless plating method. The effects of sintering pressure and Co content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides were investigated. The results showed that, with increasing sintering pressure, the relative density of the sintered samples was improved (98.4–99.6%) while the grains were coarsened (0.94–1.07 μm). The optimal properties (fracture toughness 11.11 MPa·m1/2, and hardness 2100.3 HV30) were obtained when sintered with a pressure of 20 MPa. Grain coarsening at higher pressure (30 MPa) reduced the toughness of the cemented carbides. When the Co content was increased from 3 wt.% to 8 wt.%, fracture toughness was improved while the hardness of the cemented carbides was reduced, attributed to the intrinsic high toughness and low hardness of the Co phase. The WC–8 wt.% Co cemented carbides exhibited optimized synergic mechanical performance (hardness of 1874.2 HV30 and fracture toughness of 13.77 MPa·m1/2). This work elucidated the relationship between the key sintering parameters (pressure and Co content) and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides. The achievements obtained provide a theoretical foundation for high-quality fabrication of the WC–Co cemented carbides.

Thiol-functionalized conductive Co-MOF and its derivatives S-doped Co(OH)2 nanoflowers for high-performance supercapacitors

Peng-Fei Qiu,Xiu-Niang Tan,Zai-Yin Huang,Yan Zhou

The low conductivity of many traditional metal–organic-framework (MOF)-based electrode limits their developments in the field of electrochemical energy storage and still of great challenge. The controllable preparation of various kinds of nanomaterials using thiol-functionalized MOF shows great prospects. In this work, a thiol-functionalized metal–organic framework sheet structure ( Co-MOF/NF ) on nickel foam was successfully prepared by in situ interfacial growth synthesis, which was transformed into its derivatives S-doped β-Co(OH) 2 nanoflowers Co-x/NF ( x  = 1, 2 and 6) in different concentrations of KOH solutions through ion etching/exchange reaction. The pristine thiol-functionalized Co-MOF/NF and its derivatives Co-x/NF ( x  = 1, 2 and 6) nanoflower-like arrays could be used as positive electrode materials for effective supercapacitors. Among them, the transformation of the nanoflower-like Co-1/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties with high areal capacitance (1925 ± 23 mF/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 ), good rate performance, excellent conductivity and decent cycling stability. The Co-1//AC ASC device provides a high energy density of 0.176 mWh/cm 2 (92.6 Wh/kg) at a power density of 0.745 mW/cm 2 (392.1 W/kg). And this Co-1//AC ASC device exhibits a good cycling stability and practical application in energy storage field. This study provides a new strategy for the pristine thiol-functionalized MOF and its conversion nanostructures for energy storage applications.

Research on the Chloramphenicol Removal Performance of Co-Doped Porous Carbon Materials Derived from Co-Zn Bimetallic ZIFs

Ke-Hong Chen,Ao-Tian Gu,Liang Zhang,Hao Tang,Zhi-Ming Zhang,Yi-Ming Zhou,Yu-Qi Cheng,Yi Yang

Chloramphenicol antibiotics (CAPs) are broad-spectrum antibiotics, and excessive consumption has led to increasingly dangerous residues in the environment. The accumulation of these highly toxic and difficult-to-biodegrade CAPs and their long-term exposure in ecological environments can pose insidious and long-term hazards to human health and aquatic organisms. In this study, co-carbon composite nanocatalysts (CoxZn10−x-NC) with many carbon nanotubes on the surface were prepared via the one-step pyrolysis of bimetallic CoxZn10−x-ZIF with different Co/Zn ratios and used for the degradation of trace amounts of CAPs in a water column. The microstructure and chemical composition of the prepared catalysts were fully characterized using SEM, TEM, and XPS. The CAP degradation experiments demonstrated that Co6Zn4-NC in CoxZn10−x-NC possessed the highest catalytic activity level, removing 100% of the CAPs in 60 min. The CAPs had a corresponding reaction rate constant of 0.22 min−1, and Co6Zn4-NC was able to completely mineralize 44.57% of them. Doping moderate amounts of Zn can effectively improve the carbon nanotube structure on the catalyst surface and promote the generation of monoatomic Co, thus improving catalytic activity. The results of the free-radical burst experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) showed that the free-radical pathway mainly dominated within the Co6Zn4-NC+PMS system, in which SO4•−was the main ROS for CAP degradation.

Preparation of poly(butyl acrylate)-grafted-poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) particles for toughening poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) resin

Mengen Liu,Qianyi Tang,Baijun Liu,Mingyao Zhang

Herein, the impact modifier of poly(butyl acrylate) grafted poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PBA-g-SAN) with 60% rubber content was prepared by emulsion grafting polymerization and subsequently blended with styrene–acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) resin to construct acrylate styrene acrylonitrile (ASA) resins. The effects of acrylonitrile content of PBA-g-SAN copolymer and PBA size on the ASA resins' mechanical properties were investigated. Experimental results revealed that ASA resin's highest impact strength reached 27.75 kJ/m 2 . The lap shear adhesion test suggested that the PBA-g-SAN copolymer with 21% AN content exhibited excellent interfacial adhesion with SAN resin. The PBA-g-SAN particles with 100 and 400 nm poly (butyl acrylate) as core rubbers demonstrated a synergistic toughening effect for SAN resin. The high blackness ASA resin with excellent impact resistance was obtained when the 100 nm and the 400 nm poly (butyl acrylate) particle mass ratio reached 8/2. Highlights The ASA resin with 27.75KJ/m 2 impact strength was prepared. The synergistic toughening mechanisms were investigated. The high blackness ASA resin was constructed.

Preparation of thermoresponsive cotton fabric by grafting P(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA475-co-GMA) polymer for personal thermal management

Xue Tong,Ma Ruijie,Zhang Xintian,Tao Wenwen,Wang Chaoxia,Yin Yunjie

Personal thermal management (PTM) textiles with heating or cooling capabilities are highly attractive because they offer individual comfort and contribute to lower energy consumption. However, due to the subjectivity of thermal comfort, developing adaptive and personalized PTM textiles remains a challenge. Here, we report a thermoresponsive cotton fabric (PMOG-cotton), which is prepared by a combination of ultraviolet-induced free radical polymerization and pad-dry-cure process. 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate (MEO 2 MA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA 475 ) are selected as thermoresponsive monomers, while glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is chosen as the linking monomer for copolymerization. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of P(MEO 2 MA-co-OEGMA 475 -co-GMA) can be precisely regulated by adjusting the dosage of OEGMA 475 . Furthermore, PMOG-cotton demonstrates a reversible transition between hydrophobic and hydrophilic states in response to variations in external temperature (T > LCST, hydrophobic; T < LCST, hydrophilic). This transition can be sustained for a minimum of 5 cycles and 50 rubbing cycles. PMOG-cotton exhibits superior control over breathability and moisture permeability compared to raw cotton in response to temperature fluctuations. Compared to raw cotton, PMOG-cotton offers a 2.4 °C heating effect in cold environments and a 1.3 °C cooling effect in hot environments. This adaptive thermal management textile shows promise for delivering human thermal comfort in complex and dynamic environments.

Surface oxygen atoms activated by Co metal sites enhanced the H2S gas sensing of Co-doped MoO3 nanoflowers

Lingfei Luo,Huimin Yang,Xiang Li,Kechen Zhou,Lu Tang,Huiyu Su,Liyan Chen,Chaofan Ma,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

The inert gas adsorption of outer oxygen atoms is becoming an important factor limiting the gas sensing activity of two-dimensional MoO 3 nanoflowers, which makes it necessary to modify the surface activity of MoO 3 nanoflowers. For a long time, the unique activity of Co atoms has attracted much attention in gas sensing. In this work, Co metal sites were introduced into MoO 3 defective nanoflowers (MoO 3 DNFs) by doping, which further improved the H 2 S gas sensing performance of MoO 3 DNFs. Based on H 2 S gas sensing experiment, the relationship between Co doping amount and gas sensing performance was constructed, and the optimal Co doping ratio was obtained. Finally, the adsorption reaction process of H 2 S gas molecules on MoO 3 -Co DNFs was simulated by DFT calculation, and the activation effect of Co metal sites on outer oxygen atoms was revealed.

Photodynamic and photothermal co-driven CO-enhanced multi-mode synergistic antibacterial nanoplatform to effectively fight against biofilm infections

Xiaojun Cai,Jiang Tian,Jingwu Zhu,Junpeng Chen,Lin Li,Chao Yang,Jiale Chen,Dongfan Chen

Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have garnered much attention for effectively treating biofilm infections. However, even highly efficient PTT reagents and photosensitizers still require high concentration and irradiation doses to ablate biofilms due to their limited permeability in biofilms, while these attempts tend to cause severe tissue damage and inflammation. Herein, a CO-enhanced multi-mode synergistic antibacterial nanoplatform (ICG& [email protected] ) with controllable CO generation behavior, notably enhanced biofilm penetration, antibacterial, biofilm ablation, and anti-inflammatory activity was effectively developed to combat biofilm infections. ICG& [email protected] is constructed by physically encapsulating indocyanine green (ICG) and manganese pentacarbonyl bromide (MnBr(CO) 5 ) into a 2,2′-bipyridine-4-carboxylic (BPY)-modified peptide dendrimer-based nanogel (G3KBPY). ICG& [email protected] can rapidly generate massive quantities of CO under the co-driven effects of PTT and PDT. Notably, the generated CO not only promotes the biofilm penetration of ICG and enhances the antibacterial and biofilm eradication performance of PTT and PDT, but also significantly alleviates the inflammatory response caused by bacterial infection, PTT and PDT. The combination of CO, PTT, and PDT offers excellent biofilm ablation effects in treating urinary catheter infection and subcutaneous abscesses, accompanied by good biocompatibility. This study provides an efficient and safe multi-mode synergistic antibacterial strategy for combatting biofilm infections.

Cu/Ce0.6Mn0.3Fe0.1O2-δ membrane fuel electrode fabricated by infiltration method for solid oxide electrochemical cells

Limin Liu,Yong Wang,Xiaoliang Zhou,Yixuan Yang,Chao Ma,Yuan Li,Chen Wang,Xiaohong Zhao,Bin Li

A cermet fuel electrode Cu/Ce 0.6 Mn 0.3 Fe 0.1 O 2-δ (Cu/CMF) is proposed for a reversible solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOC) with CO/CO 2 as the shuttle. Cu is inert for the carbon deposition and CMF is electrochemically active for CO oxidation and CO 2 reduction. The electrode polarization resistances in CO at 700, 750 and 800   °C are 0.328, 0.207 and 0.155   Ω cm 2 , respectively, presenting high electrochemical activity towards CO oxidation. The maximal power densities can reach up to 303.3, 482.2 and 691.9   mW/cm 2 at 700, 750 and 800   °C, respectively. When the reversible SOCs are operated in solid oxide electrolysis cell mode, the polarization resistance of the electrolysis cell for pure CO 2 reduction at 800   °C has the minimal value of 0.126   Ω cm 2 at 1.8   V. At 2.0   V, the current densities can reach up to 0.584 1.219 and 2.204   A/cm 2 at 700, 750 and 800   °C, respectively. The durability of the cell in CO for as long as 200   h indicates the electrode has remarkable stability. And the short-term stability characteristics for CO 2 electrolysis at different voltages illustrate that the cell performs well below 2.0   V. The harsh reducing environment at 2.0   V may be detrimental to the Cu/CMF electrode.

Further exploration of the reaction between cis-[Fe(CO)4I2] and alkylamines: An aminium salt of fac-[Fe(CO)3I3]− or an amine-bound complex of fac-[Fe(CO)3I2(NH2R)]?

Jinzhong Guo,Zhuming Guo,Zhiyin Xiao,Jing Jin,Xiuqin Yang,Yi He,Xiaoming Liu

Four new monoiron (II) tricarbonyl complexes with the amine bound, fac -[Fe(CO) 3 I 2 (NH 2 R)] (R = Et, 1 ; n Pr, 2 ; n Bu, 3 ; n Pent, 4 ), were reported using cis -[Fe(CO) 4 I 2 ] as the precursor. All the complexes 1 – 4 were structurally confirmed by various techniques such as ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and elemental analysis of which complexes 1 and 2 are crystallographically determined. The reaction of the precursor with alkylamines proceeded in two main parallel pathways to form both aminium salts of fac -[Fe(CO) 3 I 3 ] − and the amine-bound complexes ( 1 – 4 ). Their dominances altered with the reaction time. These complexes in DMSO undergo quick decomposition with complex 1 as the relatively most stable one ( t 1/2 = 7.3 min) although they are stable in solid status. Unlike the triiodo anion and pyridinyl analogs showing severe cytotoxicity due to the generation of iodine radical during the decomposition, no iodine radicals were detected from the fac -[Fe(CO) 3 I 2 (NH 2 R)] complexes. Therefore, the cell viability of RT112 cells was not affected by the presence of the amine-bound iron complex ( 1 ) up to 100 μmol L −1 .

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate by molybdenum disulfide cocatalysis of Co and N co-doped porous carbon for degrading perfluorooctanoic acid: Synergistic effect of Co and N by molybdenum and its mechanism

Fangke Yu,Xiaochun Xu,Jing Yang

In this study, precursor ultrathin molybdenum disulfide nanosheets and ZIF-67 was selected to prepare Co and N co-doped porous carbon by the support of Mo (MoS 2 /Co@NPC) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation. The morphology, crystal form and composition of MoS 2 /Co@NPC are studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and other methods. In MoS 2 /Co@NPC/PMS process, PFOA was completely degraded in 180 min at pH 7, 0.3 g/L catalyst, 0.1 mM PMS and reaction temperature of 25 °C. The degradation efficiency was much higher than that in other systems. The oxidative species for PFOA degradation was studied using free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) tests. SO −4 plays a major role in the degradation of PFOA, OH plays an auxiliary role, and 1 O 2 contributes the least. The effect of different types and positions of cobalt‑nitrogen and molybdenum atoms on the electrocatalytic activity was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The co-doping of Co and N into carbon-based materials can synergistically enhance by Mo for the activation of PMS. The unsaturated S atoms on the surface of metal sulfides can trap protons to form H 2 S while exposing the reducing metal active site, which also accelerates the rate-limiting step of the Co 3+ /Co 2+ conversion. The core-shell structure of Co@NPC doped with Mo has the characteristics of improving the electron transfer ability of carbon, promoting the mass transfer of reactants, and preventing cobalt metal agglomeration and metal dissolution. The degradation pathways of PFOA were investigated and three possible pathways were proposed. In addition to PFOA, MoS 2 /Co@NPC-800/PMS system can also remove contaminant in pharmaceutical wastewater, indicating that the process has potential application value in practical wastewater treatment .
