The reliable and accurate detection of glyphosate is urgently demanded because it is related to food and environmental safety. In this contribution, a PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex that possesses peroxidase-mimetic activity and stimulus-responsive fluorescence was fabricated by coordinating Cu 2+ with polydopamine-polyethyleneimine copolymer dots (PDA-PEI CPDs). With the introduction of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence intensity of PDA-PEI CPDs dropped sharply owing to the electron transfer effect. As a peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme , the PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex owns catalytic capacity to oxidize the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, leading a further fluorescence quenching by internal filtering effect by oxTMB. Once the glyphosate participated, the fluorescence signal of PDA-PEI CPDs is recovered significantly because of the formation of more stable Glyp-Cu 2+ complexes, meanwhile the peroxidase-mimicking activity of PDA-PEI/Cu 2+ complex could be strongly hindered. According to this principle, a novel and extremely convenient ‘turn off’ colorimetric and ‘turn on’ fluorescence sensing platform can be established for dual-mode detection of glyphosate. The favorable sensitivity and selectivity and were verified in the analysis of glyphosate in the environment through the marriage of dual-signal sensing platform. The detection limit of the dual-mode glyphosate sensing platform was 103.82 ng/mL for colorimetric assay and 16.87 ng/mL for fluorescent assay, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 96.40%–104.66% were obtained, indicating the potential of this method for application in complicated real sample. Thereby, this strategy broadens the applications of polydopamine nanomaterials and holds a promising application in determination of pesticide residues .

The environmental risks associated with microplastics from biodegradable plastics are an emerging concern, but the roles of biofilm formation and biodegradation in the environmental behaviors of biodegradable microplastics have not been clarified. Here, we investigated the adsorption and desorption performance of Cu(II) on the poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) microplastics and explored the roles of biofilms and biodegradation during the adsorption. The maximum adsorption quantities of Cu(II) by the pristine PBAT, the biofilm-covered PBAT, and the biodegraded PBAT were 140.547 µg·g −1 , 192.197 µg·g −1 , and 172.065 µg·g −1 , respectively. The biodegradation increased the Cu(II) adsorption on the PBAT by 24.43%, which was due to the changes in physicochemical properties (e.g., a high surface area to volume ratio, high crystallinity, and more oxygenated groups). The surface of PBAT covered by biofilm contained oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which could complex with more Cu(II), thus making the promoting effect of biofilm on adsorption stronger than that of biodegradation. The adsorbed Cu(II) on the surface of the biodegraded PBAT had a remarkable desorption hysteresis and was less impacted by the presence of FA, indicating that PBAT after biodegradation could transport the adsorbed heavy metals over long distances, which was not observed on the biofilm-covered PBAT. Our findings highlight the critical effects of plastic degradation on the environmental behaviors of petro-based microplastics, which helps assess the environmental fate of biodegradable microplastics in aquatic systems.

In this study, lignin extracted from rice husk was used to synthesis double network hydrogel adsorbent, named RH-CTS/PAM gel. RH-CTS/PAM gel exhibited macroporous structure and high buried water content, which gave rise to the exceptional adsorption performance. As results, in individual systems, the equilibrium time of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) with initial concentration of 200 mg/L could be reached within 10 min, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 374.32, 196.68 and 268.98 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rate and capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in multicomponent systems were lower than that of individual systems. However, in a few cases of ternary system, higher adsorption rate and capacity was observed compare to binary systems. Adsorption mechanism indicated that both oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups played a dominant role during the adsorption process, and mainly through chemical interaction along with a small amount of physical interaction.

Herein we reported a facile method to prepare porous ion/molecule imprinted polymers (I-MIPs) via twice imprinting strategy for the simultaneous uptake of copper ions (Cu(II)) and λ-cyhalothrin (LC). Firstly, N -(β-aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropytrimethoxysilane (DAMO) was grafted on silica particles surface to synthesis Cu(II)-imprinted polymers to introduce iron imprinted sites. They were then utilized as stabilizers to prepare a stable W/O Pickering HIPEs template (LC as the imprinting molecule), which was then polymerized with dual imprinting sites including Cu(II) and LC. The adsorption equilibrium, kinetic results and selective recognition experiments were exhibited their prospected dual selectivity and simultaneous removal of LC and Cu(II).

Corn stalk was used as the initial material to prepare a corn stalk matrix-g-polyacrylonitrile-based adsorbent. At first, the corn stalk was treated with potassium hydroxide and nitric acid to obtain the corn stalk-based cellulose (CS), and then the CS was modified by 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide (2-BiBBr) to prepare a macroinitiator. After that, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was grafted onto the macroinitiator by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). A novel adsorbent AO CS-g-PAN was, therefore, obtained by introducing amidoxime groups onto the CS-g-PAN with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH · HCl). FTIR, SEM and XPS were applied to characterize the structure of AO CS-g-PAN. The adsorbent was then employed to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II), and it exhibited a predominant adsorption performance on Pb(II) and Cu(II). The effect of parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, pH and the initial concentration of metal ions on adsorption capacity, were examined in detail during its application. Results suggest that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was 231.84 mg g–1 and 94.72 mg g−1, and the corresponding removal efficiency was 72.03% and 63%, respectively. The pseudo-second order model was more suitable to depict the adsorption process. And the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) accorded with the Langmuir model, while the Pb(II) conformed better to the Freundlich isotherm model.

Owing to the limited pore structure and surface charged groups, it is still challenging for biochar (BC) as the host of metallic oxide nanoparticles to achieve the highly efficient treatment of heavy metals in water. To overcome this barrier, a highly porous and charged biochar (LABC) was developed as supporter to load hydrated ferric oxide (HFO), and a new nanocomposite HFO-LABC was acquired for heavy metal decontamination. The increased and enlarged pores from KHCO 3 for LABC activation apparently cut down adsorption equilibrium time of HFO-LABC to Cd(II) and Cu(II) (within 10 min) by reducing pore diffusion resistance of targeted metals. The predicted pore diffusion coefficient D is 2.3 ☓10 –8 and 3.6 ☓10 –8 cm 2 /s for Cd(II) and Cu(II) in HFO-LABC, respectively, about 10 times higher than that in HFO-BC (2.1 ☓10 –9 and 3.7 ☓10 –9 cm 2 /s). The introduced charged groups onto LABC notably enhanced Cd(II) and Cu(II) adsorption on HFO-LABC through promoting the dispersion of the loaded nanoparticles (size < 10 nm) and the potential Donnan membrane effect. Consequently, Fe-normalized adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on HFO-LABC of 976.23 and 1170.77 mg/g-Fe are much greater than those on HFO-BC (299.50 and 510.92 mg/g-Fe). Moreover, HFO-LABC can achieve advanced treatment for synthetic and real Cd(II) and Cu(II)-polluted wastewater in cyclic batch system, with treatment capacities of 1500, 3500 and 8000, 4500 mL/g-HFO-LABC. In addition, the spent HFO-LABC can achieve complete regeneration using HCl-CaCl 2 binary solution with desorption rate >95 %.

In this paper, iminodiacetic acid-Cu(II) functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared and used as new adsorbents for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of six monoamine neurotransmitters (MNTs) from rabbit plasma. The selective enrichment of MNTs at pH 5.0 was motivated by the specific coordination interaction between amino groups of MNTs and the immobilized Cu(II). The employed weak acidic extraction condition avoided the oxidation of MNTs, and thus facilitated operation and ensured higher recoveries. Under optimal conditions, the recoveries of six MNTs from rabbit plasma were in the range of 83.9–109.4%, with RSD of 2.0–10.0%. When coupled the Cu(II) immobilized MSPE with high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection, the method exhibited relatively lower detection limits than the previously reported methods, and the method was successfully used to determine the endogenous MNTs in rabbit plasma. The proposed method has potential application for the determination of MNTs in biological samples. Also, the utilization of coordination interaction to improve the selectivity might open another way to selectively enrich small alkaloids from complex samples.

In recent years, advanced oxidation based on periodate (PI) has become a research focus for disposal of recalcitrant organics from water due to its efficient oxidizing ability. This study systematically investigated the degradation of reactive black 5 (RB5) by the Cu(II)-activated sodium periodate (NaIO4, SPI) system. The optimal reaction conditions were determined via Box–Behnken response surface methodology as [Cu(II)] = 1.013 ± 0.021 g L−1, [SPI] = 45 ± 2 μM, and pH = 5.7 ± 0.3, achieving a RB5 removal rate of 91.98% (R2 = 0.9901, prediction error <1%). The free radical quenching experiment confirmed that the dominant ROS in the system were ˙OH, 1O2, and IO3˙, and their contribution was IO3˙ > 1O2 > ˙OH. The coexistence anion experiments showed that Cl− (0.1–5.0 mM) and SO42− (0.1–5.0 mM) had almost no effect on the RB5 degradation efficiency, with inhibition rates lower than 1.99% and 3.58%, respectively, while CO32− (1.0 mM) and HCO3− (1.0 mM) led to a decrease of 20.8% and 14.17% in the RB5 degradation rate. In the presence of HA, the degradation efficiency of RB5 was maintained at 89.88–92.66%. The system maintained a removal rate of 73.33–87.66% for RB5 in the simulated actual water bodies (tap water/river water/brewery wastewater). Energy-assisted experiments showed that the activation energy of the reaction was significantly reduced and the kobs values were increased by 10.3 times when the temperature was increased to 40 °C, and the reaction time could be shortened to 2 min (removal rate >98%) after ultraviolet (365 nm, 20 W) coupling. In summary, this study is expected to support the related PI-based advanced oxidation process in stubborn pollutant treatment.

In the process of industrial wastewater discharge, water pollution remains a pressing challenge, with heavy metal pollution being the most critical issue. Electrochemical sensors offer advantages such as rapid response time, ease of integration with microprocessors for on-site testing. This paper proposes the use of self-assembled polystyrene (PS) microspheres as electrode modification materials, leveraging their ordered assembly structure to reduce signal differences between electrodes from different batches, thereby preparing an electrochemical sensor with good repeatability for the determination of heavy metal ions (HMIs) Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II). The experiment employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) to collect the stripping currents. The designed sensor exhibited sensitivities of 0.905 μA/μM, 0.408 μA/μM, and 0.264 μA/μM, as well as limits of detection (LODs) of 0.13 μM, 0.25 μM, and 0.29 μM (S/N = 3) for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. To enhance detection accuracy, peak current, full stripping current, and feature current were respectively input combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms to construct prediction models to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The results demonstrated that the constructed RF-Feature model significantly improved detection accuracy. It demonstrated excellent reliability, with R 2 values of 0.9952, 0.9973, and 0.9976, and root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.6580 μM, 0.5838 μM, and 0.8164 μM, for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The detection range was 1 μM to 70 μM. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the sensor in practical applications was validated by detection in real wastewater samples from industrial and hospital emissions. These results were validated using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method.

In this work, an adsorbent, which we call MnPT, was prepared by combining MnO 2 , polyethylenimine and tannic acid, and exhibited efficient performance for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups on the surface of MnPT might increase the enrichment of metal ions by complexation. The maximum adsorption capacities of MnPT for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 121.5 and 790.2 mg·g −1 , respectively. The surface complexation formation model was used to elucidate the physicochemical interplay in the process of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) co-adsorption on MnPT. Electrostatic force, solvation action, adsorbate-adsorbate lateral interaction, and complexation were involved in the spontaneous adsorption process. Physical electrostatic action was dominant in the initial stage, whereas chemical action was the driving force leading to adsorption equilibrium. It should be noted that after adsorption on the surface of MnPT, Cr(VI) reacted with some reducing functional groups (hydroxylamine-NH 2 ) and was converted into Cr(III). The adsorption capacity declined by 12% after recycling five times. Understanding the adsorption mechanism might provide a technical basis for the procedural design of heavy metal adsorbents. This MnPT nanocomposite has been proven to be a low-cost, efficient, and promising adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Cu(II) adulteration in preserved vegetables by unreliable producers to increase their visual appeal or compensate for natural colour changes is most common. Methanobactin (Mb) is a Cu(II)-coordinated peptide, which plays crucial role in Cu(II) capture and absorption and the catalysis
of Cu(II)-containing methane monooxygenase in methanotrophs. In this study, Mb-functionalized gold nanoparticles (Mb-AuNPs) was applied to develop a dual readout colorimetric detection for Cu(II) adulteration in preserved vegetables. In the presence of Cu(II), Mb-AuNPs was assembled into nanocluster
driven by Cu(II)/Mb coordination, and the assembly process was monitored by the visible spectrum on the variation of surface plasmon resonance peak. The results showed that, Mb-AuNPs possessed excellent peroxidase-like activity after Cu(II) coordination. In the presence of Mb-AuNPs, the amount
of Cu(II) obviously affected the rate of hydroquinone oxidation by H2O2 and the change of A246. The visible and ultraviolet dual-readout detection system containing Mb-AuNPs, hydroquinone and H2O2 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity
for Cu(II). The linear range of visible and UV detection towards Cu(II) was 0.05–0.4 μmol/L, the limit of detection were 37.50 nmol/L and 4.48 nmol/L, respectively. In conclusion, the Cu(II) coordination driven Mb-AuNPs assembly makes it able to detect Cu(II) adulteration in
preserved vegetables by dual channel methods to eliminate the occurrence of false positives and improve the accuracy of measurement results. Such non-spatially separated Mb-AuNPs assembly and it catalyzed hydroquinone oxidation dual channel readout was simple, fast, reliable and significantly
facilitated the detection efficiency of Cu(II).

Efficient and simultaneous removal of chromium(VI) oxyanions and heavy metal cations from complex electroplating rinse wastewater remains a major challenge. In this study, polyethyleneimine-chitosan/imidazolium-polysulfone composite beads (denoted as CSPF) were fabricated by integrating polyethyleneimine-modified chitosan powder (CSPI) with imidazolium-functionalized polysulfone (IMPSF) via a phase inversion method. The resulting CSPF beads was applied to simultaneously remove Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from simulated electroplating rinse wastewater. In a single-metal system at pH 5, CSPF exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 89.3 mg g −1 for Cu(II) and 251.4 mg g −1 for Cr(VI). In the Cr(VI)/Cu(II) binary system, a notable co-removal synergy was observed, with adsorption capacities of CSPF increasing by 193.3% for Cu(II) and 39.7% for Cr(VI) compared to the single-metal system. The presence of other coexisting inorganic anions further significantly enhanced the adsorption of Cu(II) by CSPF. The promotion effect of different anions on Cu(II) adsorption follow the order of HCrO 4 − > H 2 PO 4 − ≈ SO 4 2 − >> NO 3 − ≈ Cl − . This trend is consistent with the extent to which they elevate the final solution pH and Cu 2p 3/2 binding energy after adsorption, and is further confirmed by DFT calculations. These results indicate that a unique electrostatic shielding–proton transfer synergistic mechanism is the key factor responsible for the synergistic co-removal of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from complexed wastewater. Column cycling experiments demonstrated that CSPF could continuously and efficiently remove both Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from the simulated electroplating rinse wastewater, along with good reusability.
