Most photocatalysts only function under illumination, while many potential applications require continuous activities in dark. Thus, novel photocatalysts should be developed, which could store part of their photoactivity in “memory” under illumination and then be active from this “memory” after the illumination is turned off for an extended period of time. Here a novel composite photocatalyst of SnO 2 nanoparticle-decorated Cu 2 O nanocubes is developed. Their large conduction band potential difference and the inner electrostatic field formed in the p - n heterojunction provide a strong driving force for photogenerated electrons to move from Cu 2 O to SnO 2 under visible light illumination, which could then be released to react with O 2 in dark to produce H 2 O 2 for its post-illumination activity. This work demonstrates that the selection of decoration components for photocatalysts with the post-illumination photocatalytic “memory” could be largely expanded to semiconductors with conduction band potentials less positive than the two-electron reduction potential of O 2 .

A series of RGO-Cu 2 O/Bi 2 O 3 composite photocatalysts was developed by depositing Cu 2 O and Bi 2 O 3 nanocrystals on the surface of RGO via an in situ precipitation method. The Cu 2 O and Bi 2 O 3 nanocrystals distributed uniformly and separately on RGO, which favored the transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes towards an effective path. Compared with RGO-Cu 2 O and RGO-Bi 2 O 3 , the three-component RGO-Cu 2 O/Bi 2 O 3 composites presented a further improvement on the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation, which can be attributed to the construction of a Z-scheme photocatalytic system where the RGO served as a solid-state medium for the transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of Bi 2 O 3 to the valence band of Cu 2 O.

A high efficient visible-light-region Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /RGO composite 3D aerogel photocatalyst was fabricated by a facile self-assemble method. The aerogel composite with various RGO and g-C 3 N 4 to Cu 2 O weight ratios was synthesized and characterized. The results showed that the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction absorbed visible light region shifted to a lower energy. In order to improved photocatalytic activity, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction loaded on reduced graphene oxide sheets resulted in increasing absorption in the visible light range and improving photodegradation activity. The optimal content of Cu 2 O in the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /RGO aerogel was 40%, which exhibited the effectively synthetized Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction, and greatly improved photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the ternary composite aerogel exhibited 96% (Methylene Blue) and 83% (Methyl Orange) degradation efficiency within 80 min. The combined heterojunction with synergistic effects of this novel composite aerogel account for the excellent photocatalytic efficiency.

In our study, a new visible-light-driven photocatalyst Cu2O/SrTiO3 (C/S) heterojunction was firstly prepared by a simple, facile and effective deposition–precipitation technique. The particle size of the Cu2O nanoparticle is only about 5 nm and the SrTiO3 (STO) nanocube is about 50 nm when modified by Cu2O nanoparticles. The samples are used as photocatalysts for photodegrading tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. The 9-Cu2O/SrTiO3 (9-C/S) sample heterojunction shows the highest TC degradation ratio (77.65%), which is caused by the photogenerated electrons of the Cu2O nanoparticles moving from the conduction band of Cu2O to that of SrTiO3, resulting in the separation of electrons and holes. This study not only shows a possibility for substituting noble metals with low-cost Cu2O nanoparticles in photocatalytic degradation but also exhibits a facile deposition–precipitation technique for synthesizing narrow/wide band gap photocatalysts.

In this work, well-defined monodisperse porous Cu 2 O nanospheres were facilely synthesized, using ionic liquid crystal 1-hexadecyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide ([C 16 MMIm]Br) as a soft template. The as-prepared Cu 2 O nanospheres were successfully anchored on the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (RGOs) by simple ultrasonication. The RGOs-Cu 2 O nanocomposites showed high electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation. Thus, a non-enzymatic amperometric glucose sensor was constructed with a wide linear range from 0.01 to 6 mM, low detection limit of 0.05 μM ( S/N = 3), high selectivity (185 μA mM −1 ), and fast response (within 3 s). This strategy opens a new facile and simple chemical route to prepare porous metal oxides supported on RGOs with novel properties.

In this work, an ultrasensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was developed for the quantitative detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). Gold nanoparticles decorated 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalized graphene sheets (Au@APTES-GS) with a large specific surface area, good biocompatibility and superior electron transfer ability were employed as the matrix. In addition, cubic Cu 2 O nanoframes with hollow edges were employed as the label for the first time. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were used to confirm the nanostructure of Au@APTES-GS and Cu 2 O. Using square wave voltammetry (SWV) to monitor the electrocatalytic process, the signal amplification mechanism of the matrix and the label were explored successfully. Here we find that the unique edge-truncated structure of Cu 2 O nanoframes can load with a larger amount of redox mediators , ferrocenecarboxylic acid (Fc-COOH), offering a higher electrochemical signal response. Apart from that, Cu 2 O nanoframes have a good electrocatalytic activity towards the Fc-COOH and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), making a contribution to further enhance the sensitivity of the fabricated immunosensor. Under optimal conditions, the proposed immunosensor achieved an ultrasensitive and specific detection of PSA, and displayed acceptable reproducibility, selectivity and stability. This work may provide an effective method for the clinical monitoring of tumor markers and demonstrate the potential application promising of nanoframes in the fabrication of immunosensors.

The development of efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated catalysts is important for the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks derived cobalt oxide modified cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 ) with carbon bone were constructed by driving a dual-precursors of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and Cu 2 O, activating PMS for organic degradation. XRD, FT-IR, EDS analyses and XPS were used to demonstrate phase purity while SEM and HR-TEM were used to discover the shape of the synthesised material. EIS, transient current and LSV were used to enquire about the conductivity of the samples and change in current density accordingly. The degradation efficiency of Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 -10 for TC reached 89.8% within 60 min under dark conditions. Its activated degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC), levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) was 89.4%, 81.32% and 54.09%, respectively. Spherical cuprous oxide loaded on cubic cobalt oxide. Furthermore, the effective activation of PMS was achieved by increasing the electron donor capacity of Co and redox cycling of Cu. The single linear state of oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) produced by Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 is well adapted to H 2 PO 4 − and is active at pH = 7. Notably, Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 utilized hydrogen persulfate (HSO 5 − ) to generate superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and 1 O 2 in the PMS system by Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + cyclic conversion. The strong interaction and electron transfer between Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 and PMS and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic oxide redox cycle accelerated improved the catalytic activity. In conclusion, this study provides a new perspective that is conducive to improving the practical application of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

For the first time, single-layer carbon dots (CDs) were used as capping agents to synthesize cuprous oxide nanosheets (Cu2O-NSs) as a high-performance surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, emphasizing their chemical enhancement mechanism. The Cu2O-NSs, synthesized using single-layer carbon dots as capping agents, exhibit uniform morphology and remarkable SERS activity, achieving an enhancement factor of 4.97 × 105 for crystal violet under 532 nm laser excitation. The SERS enhancement is primarily attributed to photoinduced charge transfer between the Cu2O-NSs and analyte molecules, as confirmed by energy-level alignment studies. The substrate demonstrates excellent signal homogeneity, batch-to-batch reproducibility, and long-term stability, with no significant signal attenuation over 60 days. These findings underscore the potential of Cu2O-NSs as a cost-effective and stable SERS substrate, with promising applications in chemical sensing and molecular detection.

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O), which has an appropriate band gap, is widely used as a marine antifouling biocide. This makes it increasingly valuable for photocatalytic antibacterial applications. Using crystal engineering technology to create Cu 2 O with tailored Cu 2 O/Cu interfaces and crystal planes can effectively enhance its performance but presents challenges. Herein, we report a simple wet chemical method for the controlled preparation of Cu 2 O@Cu hollow heterostructure. Experimental results demonstrate that the prepared composites exhibited highly efficient and broad-spectrum photocatalytic antibacterial effects against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, achieving 100% antibacterial efficiency under 10 min of irradiation, much more effective than the bulk Cu 2 O. Characterization results show that a hollow spherical structure consisted of fine Cu 2 O@Cu nanoparticles in their wall, and the generated interfaces facilitated the migration and separation of photogenerated charge carriers and promoted the formation of hydroxyl radicals with stronger oxidizing abilities. Meanwhile, the Cu outside layer of each Cu 2 O@Cu particle not only acted as a shield to protect Cu 2 O from corrosion but also served as an electron acceptor to efficiently transfer photogenerated electrons, thereby demonstrating highly effective and stable antibacterial performance. This study not only offers a valuable reference for developing highly efficient and universal photocatalytic materials but also provides insight into the chemical reaction in the photocatalytic antibacterial process.

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is a highly promising photocatalyst that facilitates efficient water splitting and hydrogen production under light conditions. In this study, Cu 2 O thin film photocathodes were prepared through electro-deposition, with the inclusion of \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) ions resulting in the formation of a flower-like microstructure. The size, distribution and roughness of these clusters were found to be greatly influenced by the concentration of the \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) ions as confirmed by SEM and AFM characterizations. When 0.4 M \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) ions were used, a flat and compact structure with the smallest ‘flower bud’ was obtained. This structure achieved a maximum photocurrent density of − 2.90 mA/cm 2 @0 V vs. RHE, which is 2.2 times greater than that of bare Cu 2 O. UV–Vis absorption, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and EIS measurements suggest that the compact microstructure facilitates enhanced ultraviolet absorption and separation of photogenerated holes and electrons. This results in a lower charge transfer resistance and a significant increase in photocurrent density. Additionally, a growth mechanism for the flower-like Cu 2 O was proposed. The XPS and EDS analyses indicate that the addition of \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) during Cu 2 O formation results in the adsorption of \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) onto the surface of the initial Cu 2 O grain. This, in turn, catalyses the electrocatalytic reduction of \(\mathrm{NO}^{-}_{3}\) on the surface of Cu 2 O, leading to the formation of NH + 4 ions as evidenced by XPS.

The insight of the activity phase and reaction mechanism is vital for developing high-performance ammonia synthesis electrocatalysts. In this study, the origin of the electronic-dependent activity for the model Cu2O catalyst toward ammonia electrosynthesis with nitrate was probed. The modulation of the electronic state and oxygen vacancy content of Cu2O was realized by doping with halogen elements (Cl, Br, I). The electrocatalytic experiments showed that the activity of the ammonia production depends strongly on the electronic states in Cu2O. With increased electronic state defects in Cu2O, the ammonia synthesis performance increased first and then decreased. The Cu2O/Br with electronic defects in the middle showed the highest ammonia yield of 11.4 g h−1g−1at −1.0 V (vs. RHE), indicating that the pattern of change in optimal ammonia activity is consistent with the phenomenon of volcano curves in reaction chemistry. This work highlights a promising route for designing NO3−RR to NH3catalysts.

Due to the modification of anions, an electron redistribution occurs at the metal ions can affect the electronic structure, and induce excellent specific capacity. Herein, we report an effective and low time-consuming method by in-situ wet chemical reduction at room temperature to construct S-modified Cu/Cu 2 O negative electrode material. Moreover, the sulfur can occupy partial O sites in Cu 2 O to play a crucial role in the electronic structure of the material, demonstrated by DFT calculation, XRD, XPS and XAS measurements. The prepared S-Cu/Cu 2 O samples exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with high specific capacity of 669 mAh·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 , even 450 mAh·g −1 at 10 A·g −1 . When the materials are composed as pseudo capacity-type cathode//battery-like anode (MnO 2 //S-Cu/Cu 2 O), and (+) battery-type//battery-type (-) (Ni-Cu hydroxide/Cu(OH) 2 /CF//S-Cu/Cu 2 O) hybrid capacitors, they show the energy density of 47.7 and 147.3 Wh·kg −1 at the power density of 636.2 and 800 kW·kg −1 , respectively. Otherwise, the flexible MnO 2 //S-Cu/Cu 2 O hybrid capacitor is assembled, which also exhibits good performance at different bending conditions. This work can provide a simple method to prepare the electrode materials via in situ anion modification for high-energy density battery-like energy storage systems.
