Efficient Inhibition of N2O during NO Absorption Process Using a CuO and (NH4)2SO3 Mixed Solution

Yongheng Xiong,Qin Zhong,Man Ou,Wei Cai,Shipeng Wan,Yang Yu,Shule Zhang

The discovery of effective methods toward nitric oxide (NO) removal by solution is valuable for the cost-effective flue gas control. In this study, it is first reported that nitrous oxide (N2O) is obviously suppressed by using copper oxide (CuO) combined with (NH4)2SO3 (NS) solution. CuO has been characterized, and the effects of reactants concentration, additives, temperature, pH and powder size on NO absorption process have been evaluated. The selectivity of N2O can drop from 91.30% to 11.25% under the optimum experimental conditions. Furthermore, based on the method of single-factor analysis, the inhibition of N2O is identified as the coeffect of NS/CuO. In addition, the pathways of NO removal are divided into two parts—N2O formation and NO absorption—and its ratio is calculated in the range of 0.29–0.53. Because of the continuous supply of NS from ammonia desulfurization, this study opens the feasibility of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification.

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu2O@Cu composite

Xin Ban,Jiamu Li,Wenwen Sun,Aijia Sun,Huayi Li,Zhengchun Yang,Peng Pan,Jie He,Rui Zhang,Yang Zhao

A highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose electrode based on truncated octahedral CuO-modified Cu 2 O@Cu composite was fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method combined with a two-step liquid-phase reduction process. Research on utilizing nanostructures to increase the contact opportunities between electroactive materials and target analytes, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity, is currently insufficient. In this study, we employed a reduction method to create a core–shell structure with copper shells encapsulating internal nanomaterials. This structure was designed to provide more active sites for glucose molecules, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic response current of glucose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and components of the products obtained from each step, while the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu ternary composites were specifically analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For glucose detection, CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite was modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as a working electrode for electrochemical performance testing. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) test results indicate that the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu-GCE electrode exhibits a sensitivity of 771 μA cm −2 mM −1 within the glucose concentration range of 0 to 10 mM, with a detection limit of 3.39 μM. Chronoamperometry (CA) results demonstrate that the electrode achieves a sensitivity of 1067 μA cm −2 mM −1 in the glucose concentration range of 0 to 1 mM, with a detection limit of 0.56 μM. Exhibiting a broad linear response range, high sensitivity, minimal detection limit, and robust selectivity against common interferents, the electrode maintained 99 % stability over four days and retained more than 85 % of its current response for two weeks, also showing notable sensitivity in artificial sweat samples. Owing to its simple fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and outstanding electrochemical properties, the CuO/Cu 2 O@Cu composite offers significant potential for application in non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

HEPES-mediated controllable synthesis of hierarchical CuO nanostructures and their analogous photo-Fenton and antibacterial performance

Shilei Wang,Qin Li,Fengxi Chen,Jun Ke,Rong Chen

Owing to the strongly morphology and size-dependent properties of nanomaterials, developing a simple and eco-friendly approach for controlling synthesis and assembly of hierarchical CuO nanostructures plays a critical role. In this work, we successfully developed an eco-friendly and facile hydrothermal route for controllable synthesis of various morphologies CuO nanostructures, where traditional and toxic additives were replaced by biocompatible 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethane-sulfonic acid (HEPES). The growth rate and orientation of CuO nanoparticles were tuned through adjusting the concentration and pH value of HEPES. The XRD pattern, SEM, UV-DRS, and BET indicated CuO nanostructures maintained high purity and excellent crystalline nature and showed more regular morphology and size with enhanced visible light absorption. The analogous photo-Fenton assay demonstrated that the as-prepared CuO nanostructures present enhanced dye removal capability when compared with CuO synthesized in pure water. Furthermore, the antibacterial assay on S. aureus was also investigated, and CuO nanoparticles with smallest size displayed the best antibacterial performance. These results reveal that HEPES shows a remarkable influence on the possible application of as-prepared CuO nanostructures which having great potential in pollutant removal.

Synergy of CuO and CeO2 combination for mercury oxidation under low-temperature selective catalytic reduction atmosphere

Hailong Li,Lei Zhu,Shaokang Wu,Yang Liu,Kaimin Shih

Synergy for low temperature Hg 0 oxidation under selective catalytic reduction (SCR) atmosphere was achieved when copper oxides and cerium oxides were combined in a CuO-CeO 2 /TiO 2 (CuCeTi) catalyst. Hg 0 oxidation efficiency as high as 99.0% was observed on the CuCeTi catalyst at 200   °C, even the gas hourly space velocity was extremely high. To analyze the synergistic effect , comparisons of catalyst performance in the presence of different SCR reaction gases were systematically conducted over CuO/TiO 2 (CuTi), CeO 2 /TiO 2 (CeTi) and CuCeTi catalysts prepared by sol-gel method. The interactions between copper oxides and cerium oxides in CuCeTi catalyst yielded more surface chemisorbed oxygen, and facilitated the conversion of gas-phase O 2 to surface oxygen, which are favorable for Hg 0 oxidation. Copper oxides in the combination interacted with NO forming more chemisorbed oxygen for Hg 0 oxidation in the absence of gas-phase O 2 . Cerium oxides in the combination promoted Hg 0 oxidation through enhancing the transformations of NO to NO 2 . In the absence of NO, NH 3 exhibited no inhibitive effect on Hg 0 oxidation, because enough Lewis acid sites due to the combination of copper oxides and cerium oxides scavenged the competitive adsorption between NH 3 and Hg 0 . In the presence of NO, although NH 3 lowered Hg 0 oxidation rate through inducing reduction of oxidized mercury, complete recovery of Hg 0 oxidation activity over the CuCeTi catalyst was quickly achieved after cutting off NH 3 . This study revealed the synergistic effect of the combination of copper oxides and cerium oxides on Hg 0 oxidation, and explored the involved mechanisms. Such knowledge would help obtaining maximum Hg 0 oxidation co-benefit from SCR units in coal-fired power plants.

Laser-induced convenient synthesis of porous Cu2O@CuO nanocomposites with excellent adsorption of methyl blue solution

Tiejun Wang,Dameng Wang,Hua Zhang,Xuelin Wang,Ming Chen

We design a simple and versatile strategy to synthesize pure Cu2O@CuO nanoporous materials with pores the size of 4~8 nm based on the laser irradiation of CuO powders in distilled water. In the presence of 1.8 mg Cu2O@CuO nanocomposites, the adsorption of a nearly 99.69% MB solution (80 mg/L, 3 mL) can be achieved after 1 min, while 95.35% via 200 mg original CuO powders. The porous structures and the abundant hydroxyl (-OH) groups formed on the surfaces enable the Cu2O@CuO nanocomposites to have many more adsorption sites. Our results have opened up a novel green paradigm of wielding laser light as a versatile tool for sculpting porous nanocomposites without any residual reagents.

Construction and nonlinear optical characterization of CuO quantum dots doped Na2O–CaO–B2O3–SiO2 bulk glass

Zhang Yijun,Zhang Junwen,Jin Yu,Zhang Jiaqi,Hu Guangcai,Lin Sai,Yuan Rongrong,Liang Xiaojuan,Xiang Weidong

The spherical shape copper oxide (CuO) quantum dots (QDs) were successfully fabricated via copper basic calcium sodium borosilicate (Na 2 O–CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 ) precursor obtained with a facile sol–gel technique. The microstructural analysis of doped QDs are systemically characterized, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. And the results reveal that the CuO QDs with the small size are well dispersed doped in sodium calcium borosilicate glass. Remarkably, the CuO glass materials exhibit the good third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) (1.379 × 10 −12  esu), which was investigated by femto-second Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1550 nm, pulse duration of 50 fs, repetition rate of 50 MHz. The glass hybrids displayed a reverse saturable absorption and self-focusing refraction performance. And the mechanism to explain the third-order nonlinearity of CuO glass may be predominantly originated from the surface plasmon resonance effect, the quantum confinement effect and partly from the thermal effect. Besides, it is interesting that the glass hybrids have significant nonlinear absorption effects that endow the material to the potential value of the application of optical limiting device.

Synthesis of ZnO–CuO porous core–shell spheres and their application for non-enzymatic glucose sensor

Cai Bin,Zhou Yu,Zhao Minggang,Cai Hui,Ye Zhizhen,Wang Lei,Huang Jingyun

In this work, ZnO–CuO composite porous spheres with core–shell structure were successfully synthesized through a controllable simple top-down route to take advantage of the excellent features of ZnO and CuO. The crystal structure and morphology of the as-prepared products were characterized, and a possible growth mechanism was proposed. The obtained sample with a core surrounded by a porous shell has a large surface area. As CuO can well catalyze glucose in alkaline solution, together with the good electron transfer property of ZnO and the hetero-junction formed between them, non-enzymatic glucose sensors based on ZnO–CuO composite porous spheres show good performance with a wide linear range of 0.02–4.86 mM, a high sensitivity of 1,217.4 μA cm −2  mM −1 , and a low detection limit of 1.677 μM, indicating a good detection behavior of glucose.

Heterogeneous Fenton-like CuO-CoOx/SBA-15 catalyst for organic pollutant degradation: synthesis, performance, and mechanism

Jinwei Li,Yifei Wei,Qiang Liu,Huanhuan Guan,Chengchun Jiang,Xiaohui Sun

In this study, CuO-CoOx/SBA-15 catalysts were successfully synthesized via ultrasonic impregnation, and their performance in degrading nitrobenzene within a Fenton-like system was investigated. The catalyst materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The CuO-CoOx/SBA-15 catalysts featured well-distributed CuO-CoOx nanoparticles within the mesoporous SBA-15 support. Compared to CuO/SBA-15 and Co3O4/SBA-15 catalysts with similar microstructures, the CuO-CoOx/SBA-15 catalysts exhibited Cu-Co dual active centers and a higher abundance of redox-active sites. During catalytic degradation, H2O2 was continuously activated on the catalyst surface through efficient Cu+/Cu2+ and Co2+/Co3+ redox cycles. The experimental conditions (initial pH, catalyst dosage, and H2O2 dosage) were optimized, resulting in 99% nitrobenzene removal over a wide pH range (3.0–9.0). The primary mechanisms for the oxidation and subsequent removal of nitrobenzene in the CuO-CoOx/SBA-15-H2O2 system were identified as reactions with hydroxyl radicals (·OH).

Hierarchical CoNi layered double hydroxide nanosheets enwrapped CuO nanorods by electrodeposition for excellent energy storage devices

Wang Yan,Wang Hanbo,Wan Sheng,Pei Dongyu,Wang Ziming,Xu Shaopeng,Tian Yumei,Lu Haiyan

A hierarchical structure consisting of Co Ni layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDH-NSs) enwrapped copper oxide nanorods (CuO-NRs) was synthesized in situ on the surface of copper foam (CF) through direct oxidation and electrodeposition methods. The CF skeleton provided the desired electrical conductivity, while in-situ oxidation of CuO-NRs eliminated the need for binders. Moreover, the uniform growth of LDH-NSs on CuO-NRs via electrodeposition facilitated the formation of a stratified structure, effectively inhibiting the aggregation of LDH-NSs and providing ample active sites for the adsorption/desorption and transportation of electrolyte ions. Adjusting the molar ratio of Co 2+ to Ni 2+ in the electrolyte influenced the electrochemical properties, resulting in efficient in-situ growth, a porous structure, and uniform morphological control. The CF@CuO@Co-Ni LDH-2 (Co: Ni = 1:2) sample demonstrated the most favorable electrochemical performance, primarily attributed to its superior Ni: Co synergistic effect. As a wonderful electrode material, it exhibited a high specific capacitance of 2628.4 F g −1 at a current density of 2 A g −1 . Even after 5000 cycles at 20 A g −1 , it maintained an outstanding retention rate of 95.00 %. As expected, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor displayed a remarkable energy density of 101.54 Wh kg −1 . The supercapacitor exhibited an impressive retention rate of 87.57 % after 10,000 cycles at 20 A g −1 . This study highlighted the potential of hierarchical electrode materials prepared via direct oxidation and electrodeposition for supercapacitor applications. The electrodeposition method preserved all active components on the carrier surface and improved the utilization rate of active sites, while avoiding the use of adhesives, templates, or surfactants, simplifying the procedure.

Hydrogen production from low-temperature methanol steam reforming over silver-promoted CuO/ZnO/Ag/Al2O3 Catalyst

Saibei Zhang,Xiaohan Qu,Hui Lv,Jingbo Mao,Jinxia Zhou

Cu-based catalysts featured with high activity at low temperatures and suppressed CO generation are expected to attract significant attention in the methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction for on-board hydrogen production for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we demonstrate that Ag incorporation into a CuO/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst leads to enhanced hydrogen production activity and suppressed CO selectivity in MSR reactions at low temperatures (200–220 °C). The characterization results revealed that incorporation of a small amount of Ag in the catalyst not only improves the dispersion of the polymetallic components and diversifies the Cu species, but also lowers Cu reduction temperature and brings more oxygen vacancies , thereby leading to improved catalytic performance. The preparation conditions, structure-activity relationship, and stability of the Ag-promoted catalyst were investigated in detail based on time-on-steam tests and characterizations. This finding paves a new possible way for the optimization of the Cu-based catalysts for MSR.

Lanthanide coordination polymers@CuO nanoparticles: Enhanced self-cascade nanoenzyme activity and ratiometric fluorescence assay of glutathione

Xinru Wu,Chen Ruan,Siqi Zhou,Lina Zou,Rong Wang,Gaiping Li

Tandem enzyme can catalyze some cascade reactions with high efficiency, and some few tandem enzyme-like mimics have been discovered recently. Further improving the catalytic efficiency of tandem nanoenzymes with facile method may undoubtedly promote and broaden their applications in various fields. In this work, cupric oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) with dual-functional enzyme mimics were synthesized using the rapid deposition method in advance, which simultaneously combined with lanthanide infinite coordination polymers (Ln ICPs) during the self-assemble of Tb 3+ , guanine-5′-triphosphate (GTP) and auxiliary ligand terephthalic acid (TA). Excitingly, the obtained Tb-GTP/TA@CuO ICPs, not only displayed obviously enhanced tandem catalytic activity compared with pure CuO NPs, but also provided a versatile ratiometric platform for ultrahigh selective and sensitive detection of glutathione (GSH) under single-wavelength excitation. A good linear relationship between the ratio signal and the GSH concentration was spanning from 0.001 to 20 μM with an impressive detection limit of 0.50 nM. This study opens a new and universal avenue for preparing integrated multifunctional probes by coupling of nanoenzyme catalytic activity with superior luminescent Ln ICPs through facile method.

Micron-sized CuO spheres anchored on three-dimensional nickel foams for high-performance aqueous asymmetric capacitor

Dongyu Pei,Hanbo Wang,Sheng Wan,Ziming Wang,Mingrui Yu,Zhenlu Wang,Haiyan Lu

Despite its high theoretical specific capacitance and low cost, copper oxide still suffers from insufficient utilization of active sites and poor cyclic stability when applied in asymmetric capacitors. In this work, micron-sized CuO electrode has been successfully obtained using nickel foam as substrate through an electrodeposition method. By optimizing the electrodeposition potential and designing structure, the CuO microsphere electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 985 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . Furthermore, the asymmetric capacitor assembled with CuO electrode and activated carbon electrode exhibits a maximum energy density of 44.5 Wh kg −1 at 1600 W kg −1 and a long lifespan of 93.4% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . These results demonstrate that the microsphere structure contributes to maintaining excellent structural stability during long cycles and then facilitate their electrochemical kinetics and capacitive performances. This work presents a novel strategy for designing and enhancing micron-sized positive electrodes for high-performance asymmetric capacitors.
