Morphology and composition tuning of layered materials is evaluated to influence their electrochemical performance for energy storage and conversion applications. Layered Co 1− x Ni x hydroxides ( x= 0, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1) of three different morphologies—nanocones, 2 D nanosheets obtained by the rapid exfoliation of nanoconical counterparts, and 2 D superlattice-like nanostructures alternately restacked by the oppositely charged hydroxide and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets—have been systematically investigated for electrocatalytic oxygen oxidation. High activity is obtained with the 2 D Co 2/3 Ni 1/3 hydroxide nanosheets/GO superlattice (Co 2/3 Ni 1/3 NS–GO), achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 259 mV accompanied by a small Tafel slope of 35.7 mV dec −1 , surpassing nanocones and 2 D nanosheets, as well as the congeneric heterostructured Co 1− x Ni x hydroxide nanosheets/GO nanoarchitectures (Co 1− x Ni x NS–GO; x= 0, 1/2, 1/4, 1) and the commercial RuO 2 electrocatalyst. The outstanding activity of Co 2/3 Ni 1/3 NS–GO superlattice uncovers the combined merits of 2 D superlattice-like structure and composition optimization for electrocatalysis, providing a strategy for developing high-performance electrochemical materials by rational morphology and composition design. Graphical A super lattice : Composition and morphology optimization was used to develop a 2 D Co 2/3 Ni 1/3 hydroxide/graphene oxide superlattice with high activity for oxygen evolution, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 259 mV accompanied by a small Tafel slope of 35.7 mV dec −1 . The outstanding activity of the superlattice highlights the importance of morphology and composition optimization for electrocatalysis.

SCN-AP with a D-π-A network was synthesized via sulfur doping and pyridine grafting. • SCN-AP achieves integrated design of 1 O 2 generation and kinetic matching of ORR/WOR. • SCN-AP boosts ·O 2 - / 1 O 2 generation, with a H 2 O 2 yield of 1030 μmol g -1 within 2 h. • Antibacterial assays verify the photoactivated antibacterial potential of SCN-AP. • In-situ XPS and DRIFTS characterize photogenerated electron flow and reaction intermediates. Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis is commonly dominated by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), whereas simultaneously enabling water oxidation reaction (WOR) and directional charge separation through band-structure regulation remains challenging. Herein, sulfur doping and pyridine modification were integrated to construct an intramolecular donor- π -acceptor (D- π -A) network within the carbon nitride framework. The resulting electronic polarization promotes directional separation of photogenerated charge carriers and optimizes the band structure to thermodynamically enable both ORR and WOR pathways. Consequently, the as-synthesized SCN-AP photocatalyst achieves an H 2 O 2 yield of 1030 μmol g -1 within 2 h in pure water, 3.73 times that of pristine PCN, and exhibits effective antibacterial activity against clinically relevant pathogens including Acinetobacter beijerinckii and Klebsiella variicola . The in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) collectively support the coexistence of ORR and WOR pathways. The ORR serves as the predominant route and involves a ·O 2 - -mediated stepwise reduction pathway together with a 1 O 2 -associated pathway, while WOR provides a complementary hole-driven contribution to H 2 O 2 formation. This work demonstrates a feasible band-engineering strategy for constructing polymeric photocatalysts with directional charge transfer and dual-pathway H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. This work demonstrates a D-π-A-mediated electronic polarization strategy that directs charge migration in carbon nitride, enabling dual-pathway H 2 O 2 photosynthesis through coupled ORR and WOR processes. Heat stress is prevalent in industrial biomanufacturing processes including Baijiu brewing and bioethanol production. It disrupts the membrane structure and lipid homeostasis of Saccharomyces cerevisiae , interferes with genome-wide gene transcription and retards cell growth, thereby greatly lowering fermentation efficiency and product yields. There is an urgent demand for food-safe additives to alleviate heat-induced damage to industrial yeast. Although vitamin D₂ (VD₂) shares a similar sterol structure with endogenous yeast ergosterol, its regulatory effects on yeast under heat stress remain poorly understood. Here, we adopted an integrated strategy combining phenotypic characterization, lipidomics, transcriptomics and molecular docking to explore the protective effects and regulatory pathways of exogenous VD₂ against heat stress in S. cerevisiae . Phenotypic assays showed that VD₂ supplementation effectively alleviated heat-induced growth retardation, elevated intracellular glutathione peroxidase activity and reduced membrane injury. Lipidomic analysis revealed that VD₂ remodelled cellular lipid profiles by increasing triglyceride levels, decreasing phosphatidylcholine content and promoting sphingolipid synthesis. Transcriptomic results further demonstrated significant upregulation of key genes involved in the S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) metabolic axis. Integrated multi-omics data and molecular docking prediction support a tentative mechanistic hypothesis: VD₂ may interact with Opi3p and potentially interfere with its catalytic function, which could further drive downstream metabolic reprogramming. In conclusion, this study reveals that VD₂ alleviates heat-triggered growth suppression by remodelling the SAM-dependent lipid metabolic network. As a food-grade additive, VD₂ possesses promising potential to alleviate heat-induced growth retardation of yeast starters in industrial fermentation. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for developing natural additives to mitigate yeast heat damage and optimizing high-temperature fermentation bioprocesses.

Developing efficient water purification technologies without external chemical inputs is critical for treating emerging contaminants. Herein, we report a Cu 2 WS 4 -CoPc composite piezocatalyst that enables efficient in situ H 2 O 2 production and pollutant degradation via enhanced oxygen activation. The introduction of CoPc induces interfacial electron transfer from Cu 2 WS 4 to CoPc and promotes O 2 activation through d-p orbital hybridization between Co and O 2 , as confirmed by density functional theory calculations showing a decrease in O 2 adsorption energy from +1.2 to −0.3 eV. Consequently, the composite exhibits significantly enhanced piezoelectric response, with increased piezoelectric constant and effective longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient. The optimized Cu 2 WS 4 -CoPc generates H 2 O 2 via a two-electron oxygen reduction pathway, with superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) as the key intermediate, achieving a yield of 183.4 µM within 30 min, which far exceeds that of pristine Cu 2 WS 4 . Moreover, the catalyst degrades ciprofloxacin with a rate constant of 0.059 min −1 , approximately 4.5 times higher than pure Cu 2 WS 4 , and zebrafish toxicity assays confirm effective detoxification of degradation intermediates. This study provides a new strategy for enhancing piezocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis through strengthened oxygen activation and lays a theoretical foundation for designing efficient, environmentally benign water treatment technologies.

IrFeCoNiMo HEA catalyst with multi-d-orbital hybridization is developed for alkaline OER. • IrFeCoNiMo shows 249 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm⁻² and 50.26 mV dec⁻¹ Tafel slope in 1 M KOH. • IrFeCoNiMo exhibits 32.2-fold higher TOF than IrO₂, with low charge transfer resistance and large surface area. • IrFeCoNiMo shows exceptional OER stability with only 1.2% overpotential decay after 5000 CV cycles and 40 h test. • Multi-d-orbital hybridization and HEA lattice distortion synergistically enhance OER performance. To address the bottlenecks of low catalytic efficiency and insufficient stability in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis hydrogen production, a multi-d-orbital synergistic modulation strategy is proposed, and the IrFeCoNiMo high-entropy alloy catalyst is fabricated via a solvothermal method. Composed of transition metals with distinct d-orbitals, the catalyst exhibits a single face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, uniform nanomorphology, and the coexistence of multiple valence states of metal elements. In alkaline electrolyte, it delivers a low overpotential of 249 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 50.26 mV dec −1 , and a turnover frequency (TOF) value 32.24 times higher than that of commercial IrO₂. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability after 5000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles and a 40-h chronopotentiometry test. Mechanistic analysis confirms that the orbital hybridization induced by directional electron transfer among multiple d-electron orbitals, combined with the lattice distortion effect of high-entropy alloys, optimizes intermediate adsorption, increases active sites, and accelerates charge transfer. This study provides a new pathway for the design and development of high-performance alkaline OER catalysts, which is of great significance for promoting the large-scale application of water electrolysis hydrogen production technology. IrFeCoNiMo high-entropy alloy with multi-d-orbital hybridization is fabricated via solvothermal method. It exhibits ultrahigh alkaline OER activity (249 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and exceptional stability, with TOF 32.24 times that of commercial IrO₂, attributed to optimized intermediate adsorption and accelerated charge transfer from orbital synergy and lattice distortion. Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) hydrodechlorination
is hindered by chlorine poisoning and the instability of monometallic
catalysts, limiting their practical application. In this work, long-range
ordered PdCu intermetallic compounds were synthesized via a microwave-assisted
method. Characterization confirmed that microwave treatment induced
strong Pd–Cu electronic interactions and lattice ordering,
thereby facilitating the formation of intermetallic phases. Catalytic
evaluations demonstrated that the PdCu/C-Ordered catalyst achieved
an ethane production rate of 4.47 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 at 300 ° C with an apparent activation
energy of 31.28 kJ/mol, while maintaining exceptional stability over
a 300 h continuous operation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
further elucidated that the intermetallic phase, characterized by
a d-band center positioned closer to the Fermi level, exhibited enhanced
reactant adsorption and activation capabilities. Concurrently, it
significantly lowered the HCl desorption energy barrier, thereby effectively
mitigating chlorine poisoning effects. This research provides a novel
pathway for the design of high-efficiency hydrodechlorination catalysts
based on the precise regulation of electronic structures.

Background Cognitive–exercise dual-task training has been shown to enhance cognitive function through mechanisms such as suppression of chronic inflammation, reduction of oxidative stress, and enhancement of synaptic plasticity. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the ability of dual-task training to delay aging-related cognitive decline remain incompletely understood. Methods Aged male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a 12-week intervention program consisting of cognitive training, exercise, or cognitive–exercise dual-task training. Cognitive and physical function were assessed using a battery of behavioral tests, including the open field test, elevated plus maze test, inverted grid test, wire hanging test, rotarod test, novel object recognition test, novel object localization test, eight-arm maze test, and Morris water maze test. Hippocampal aging and associated molecular changes were assessed using multiple techniques, including terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining, Nissl staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, and dual-luciferase reporter assays. In addition, we established in vitro models of cellular senescence using d -galactose, RNA overexpression/silencing models utilizing siRNA, and Ephrin type-B receptor 2 (EphB2) inducer/inhibitor models to explore specific molecular mechanisms. Results Age-related upregulation in microRNA (miR)-204 and downregulation in long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) were observed to disrupt Ephrin-B1 (EFNB1)/EphB2 interactions, leading to reduced cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A (PKA) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway activation. These alterations were implicated in the pathogenesis of aging-related cognitive decline. Timely interventions, especially cognitive–exercise dual-task, were found to attenuate these phenomena, thereby delaying the progression of aging-related cognitive decline. Conclusions Timely intervention during the aging process can effectively delay the progression of cognitive decline. The effects of cognitive–exercise dual-task training may surpass those of single-task interventions with either cognitive training or exercise alone. Graphical abstract

In recent years, self-assembled molecular (SAM) hole-transport materials have boosted the efficiency of inverted perovskite solar cells. However, they also introduce numerous interfacial and structural challenges, presenting a double-edged sword for device development. Such as poor wettability for perovskite precursors-which adversely affects perovskite film quality-as well as insufficient stability and nonuniform formation. These issues cause localized inefficient charge transport and increased interfacial recombination, ultimately impairing device performance and reproducibility. To overcome these limitations, we introduced d-camphorsulfonic acid (D-CSA) as a multifunctional interfacial modifier. The strongly acidic sulfonic acid group (–SO3H) of D-CSA plays a pivotal role: it enhances the wettability of the perovskite precursor on Me-4PACz ([4-(3,6-dimethyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)butyl]phosphonic acid) and, acting as a proton donor, passivates the terminal carbazole group of Me-4PACz via protonation. Concurrently, the resulting sulfonate group (–SO3–) coordinates with undercoordinated Pb2+ ions from the perovskite layer. The incorporation of D-CSA also optimizes the energy level alignment between the HTL and the perovskite. The devices modified with D-CSA achieved a power conversion efficiency of 25.47% with negligible hysteresis, significantly outperforming the control devices (23.25%). Furthermore, the D-CSA-modified devices exhibited substantially enhanced moisture resistance, thermal stability, and operational stability under continuous illumination. This work provides a feasible strategy for developing highly efficient and stable inverted PSCs.

The occurrence of pharmaceutical residues, including antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) and the chelating drug D-penicillamine (D-PA), in food and environmental samples has raised increasing concerns regarding food safety and public health. Herein, a bioinspired single-atom copper nanozyme was synthesized via a template-guided strategy by encapsulating sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) within zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). SCC served as a biomimetic precursor, mimicking the active sites of natural oxidase enzymes. Upon pyrolysis, it guided the in-situ formation of atomically dispersed Cu–N x sites. The resulting nanozyme efficiently catalyzed 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine oxidation and enabled dual colorimetric detection of CIP and D-PA. CIP produced a signal-enhancement response by coordinating with the Cu centers, which facilitated interfacial electron transfer and accelerated the oxidase-like catalytic reaction. In contrast, D-PA induced a signal-suppression response by competitively occupying the Cu active sites through its thiol and amino groups and by reducing oxidized TMB (oxTMB) to its colorless form. Linear detection ranges were 1–7 μg/mL for both analytes, limits of detection of 0.097 μg/mL for CIP and 0.108 μg/mL for D-PA. Recoveries ranged from 94.38% to 103.71% in milk and from 97.73% to 105.18% in river water samples, demonstrating reliable performance in real samples. This work provides a straightforward approach for multi-target colorimetric sensing using Cu single-atom nanozymes, with promising applications in food safety and environmental analysis.

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and has been linked to dyslipidemia, but the specific lipids associated with low vitamin D status are not well defined. To address this, we sought to characterize lipidomic alterations associated with VDD in T2DM and describe the changes following vitamin D₂ (VD2) supplementation. Specifically, untargeted serum lipidomics with anthropometric and clinical measurements were performed in 219 adults with T2DM, classified as VDD (25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL; n = 138) or non-VDD (25(OH)D ≥ 20 ng/mL; n = 81). A subset of VDD participants (n = 20) completed a 3-month VD2 supplementation trial. Lipids were profiled by UHPLC-HRMS and analyzed in relation to metabolic and anthropometric measures. Our analysis identified 112 lipid species differentially expressed in VDD, characterized by reduced ether-linked phosphatidylcholines (EtherPCs) and elevated ceramide 16:0. EtherPCs showed negative correlation with HbA1c, BMI, as well as body fat, and positive associations with muscle mass and bone mineral content, whereas ceramides inversely associated with these metabolic indices. Following 3-month VD2 supplementation, increases in circulating 25(OH)D and reductions in HbA1c were observed, accompanied by changes on the targeted lipidome, including elevated EtherPCs and reduced ceramide profiles (Cer 20:0, Cer 22:0, Cer 16:0/24:0). In conclusion, VDD in T2DM is associated with a distinct lipidomic profile marked by EtherPCs depletion and ceramide accumulation. The observed lipidomic changes following VD2 supplementation suggest the presence of a VD2-responsive lipid signature, which may have potential implications for metabolic risk management in T2DM.

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their industrial-scale application is limited by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and insufficient active site exposure under alkaline conditions. Herein, we demonstrate orbital hybridization engineering in Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 heterostructures fabricated via controlled phosphorization and magnetically modulated electrodeposition (MME). COMSOL simulations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface activates covalent Ni/Co–P bonding through optimized d–p orbital hybridization, leading to favorable electron density redistribution and an upshifted d-band center (ΔE = 0.061 eV). These electronic modifications synergistically enhance OH– adsorption energetics and accelerate water dissociation kinetics. Simultaneously, the strengthened metal–phosphorus bonds endow exceptional corrosion resistance under chloride-rich seawater conditions. As a result, Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 achieves excellent HER performance, requiring ultralow overpotentials of 266 and 325 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and seawater at pH 14, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for 200 h. In a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.62 V to reach 100 mA cm–2 in urea-assisted alkaline seawater, surpassing most reported TMP-based catalysts. The practical applicability is further verified by successfully powering a hydrogen-powered prototype vehicle. This work not only provides mechanistic insights into interfacial electronic structure modulation via d–p orbital hybridization but also establishes MME as a universal approach for high-rate hydrogen production from alkaline freshwater and seawater.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a high-value phospholipid in functional foods and pharmaceuticals. However, the lack of a suitable biocatalytic system has limited the conversion efficiency. A novel Pickering interfacial biocatalysis (PIB) system has developed for converting phosphatidylcholine (PC) to PS in this work. Three immobilized enzyme carriers were synthesized by grafting different modifying groups onto hollow mesoporous silica particles (HMSP). The combination of NQ-62 and octyl-modified groups yielded the optimal immobilized enzyme, PLD@HMSP-N 3 /C 8 . It stabilized the water-in-oil Pickering emulsion and enhanced phospholipase D (PLD) stability via hydrogen bond interactions. Under optimized conditions, a PS conversion of 93.8 % was achieved within 20 min at 40 °C, achieving a catalytic efficiency (CE) of 372 mmol/(g·h). The immobilized PLD demonstrated markedly enhanced thermostability, pH resistance, and protease hydrolysis stability compared to its free and homologous series counterparts. Moreover, it retained 70.9 % of the PS conversion after 10 cycles of reuse.
