Background Anterior gradient-2 (AGR2) is a proto-oncogene involved in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. AGR2, predominantly localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), is also a secreted protein detected in the extracellular compartment in multiple cancers. However, the biological functions of intracellular and extracellular AGR2 remain to be elucidated. Methods Based on the biochemical structure of AGR2 protein, PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells stably expressing ER-resident or secreted AGR2 were generated by a lentivirus-mediated stable overexpression system. The capacities of cell proliferation, migration, invasion and survival were assessed in PANC-1 stable cells. Moreover, EGFR expression and activation were determined to explore the possible mechanism of AGR2 roles in pancreatic cancer tumorigenesis. Results It was discovered that secreted AGR2, but not ER-resident AGR2, promotes cell proliferation, migration and invasion of PANC-1 cells. Moreover, the data indicated that both the ER-resident and the secreted AGR2 enhance the survival capacity of PANC-1 cells after tunicamycin-induced ER stress and gemcitabine treatment. However, EGFR expression and activation were not found to be involved in AGR2-dependent oncogenic phenotypes in PANC-1 cells. Conclusions Secreted AGR2 is predominantly involved in cell proliferation, migration and invasion in PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells. Both secreted and ER-resident AGR2 contribute to the survival of PANC-1 cells under the challenging conditions. These findings provide insight into how different localizations of AGR2 have contributed to pancreatic cancer growth, metastasis, and drug sensitivity.

Tunable photoluminescence (PL) has wide applications in optical waveguides and communication. Since the PL intensity is strongly dependent on the crystal field symmetry, curvature-dependent strain-induced PL modulation is expected in flexible antiferroelectric (AFE) thin film materials. Here, flexible Er-doped Pb 0.98 La 0.02 Zr 0.95 Ti 0.05 O 3 (PLZT) AFE thin films were prepared via the sol-gel method. A giant and reversible PL intensity modulation (482%) was achieved during the bending process. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Raman spectra measurements, the relationship amongst the curvature-dependent strains, crystal structure, and PL modulation was discussed. The induced strain leads to lattice distortion and even a phase transition, both of which contribute to the reduction in crystal symmetry and thus significantly enhance the PL intensity.

Optical temperature sensing based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of red emission for lanthanide ions holds significant relevance in non-contact temperature measurement for biological application. In this study, the perovskite-structured KZnF 3 is utilized as a host material for Er 3+ to achieve a high-purity upconversion (UC) red emission. The observed Stark splitting of the red emission peak provides evidence of the energy level splitting of Er 3+ . Group theory is employed to decompose the spectral branching of Er 3+ under the point group symmetry of KZnF 3 , allowing for the derivation of Stark splitting energy levels induced by the crystal field effect. The optical temperature-sensing behavior of the red UC luminescence was investigated, specifically examining the FIR of the splitting sub-peaks, which exhibited an exponential relationship with temperature. The KZnF 3 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ demonstrated a relative sensitivity ( S r ) of 0.00182%·K −1 at 298 K, highlighting its excellent response to temperature. Ex vivo bio-thermometry experiments conducted on chicken breast validated the material's ability to penetrate biological tissues and showed its significant sensitivity of the FIR to temperature. These results establish KZnF 3 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ as a promising material for optical thermometry in various biological applications. Graphic abstract

The current separation technique of ion-adsorption high yttrium (Y) rare earth ore (high-yttrium ore) using 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) and naphthenic acid (NA) has been confronted with low separation efficiency and high acid consumption. This is a consequence of the low selectivity and the difficulty of complete stripping of heavy rare earths (HREEs). Therefore, an innovative separation technique of high-yttrium ore was proposed. The leachate of high-yttrium ore was firstly divided into Erbium (Er) / Thulium (Tm) groups with P507-isooctanol followed by separating Y (III) from the high Y-enrichment of Er (III) group with sec -octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA12)-tri- n -butyl phosphate (TBP). The basic thermodynamics experiments and cascade extraction simulations were conducted to verify the feasibility of this technology. The results show that P507-15vol% isooctanol is superior to P507 in both stripping ability and separation selectivity of HREEs. The first cascade extraction for Er (III) / Tm (III) grouping with P507-15vol% isooctanol was simulated successfully, reducing acid consumption but obtaining high purity products. In theory, the second cascade extraction simulation designed for separating Y (III) with CA12-TBP could not only improve the separation ability between Y (III) and light rare earths (LREEs) but also shorten the extraction stages and reduce the production costs. All these results revealed that this two-step separation process probably provided a promising application prospect for separating high-yttrium ore.

To overcome the intrinsic limitations of TiO 2 , specifically its wide band gap and rapid photogenerated carrier recombination, for dyeing wastewater treatment, a Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped TiO 2 -ZnO heterostructure was fabricated by sol–gel method. X-ray diffraction revealed inhibited anatase-to-rutile phase transition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed Ti 2p binding energy shifts, indicating strong electronic interactions between dopants and the host lattice. Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy showed band gap narrowing to 2.927 eV, with upconversion effect extending light absorption to the near-infrared region. Photoluminescence measurements demonstrated suppressed carrier recombination, and XPS confirmed abundant oxygen vacancies. The optimal sample achieved 74.31% methylene blue degradation under visible light for 6 h and 98.58% under ultraviolet light for 2 h, outperforming commercial P25. The Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-dopants serve dual functions: they act as upconversion centers to harvest low-energy photons and function as electronic modulators that induce Ti 2p binding energy shifts and create oxygen vacancies, thereby enhancing charge separation and surface reactivity. This work integrates rare-earth co-doping with heterojunction engineering to boost TiO 2 photocatalysis.

All-optical data encoding provides a route to ultrafast, low-energy photonic memory and computation, yet its implementation is hindered by weak nonlinearities and low emission efficiencies in conventional materials. Upconversion luminescence offers strong nonlinear behavior, but typical hosts suffer from inefficient energy transfer, dilute and randomly distributed dopants, and complex excitation demands. Here, we report thermally crystallized BaYF 5 :Yb,Er glass-ceramics that overcome low upconversion efficiency and dopant inhomogeneity through controlled Er 3+ enrichment within BaYF 5 nanocrystals. Thermal crystallization reduces interionic distances, promoting cooperative Yb 3+ –Er 3+ sensitization and Er 3+ –Er 3+ energy migration. The combination of theoretical modeling and experiments shows efficient population of high-energy emitting states, yielding ultrabright upconversion emission with enhancement factors of 113-, 118-, and 110-fold for the blue, green, and red channels under 980 nm excitation. Optimized nanocrystals also prolong emission lifetimes, suppress nonradiative relaxation, and produce clear saturation behavior. Leveraging strongly nonlinear responses, power- and pulse-width-modulated excitation enables precise control of both spectral and temporal outputs, forming a highly reconfigurable platform. This allows multidimensional data encoding and implementation of fundamental optical logic gates with high fidelity and self-referenced decoding. The system offers robust, secure, and scalable functionality for advanced all-optical information processing applications.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is considered a promising metal oxide due to its good stability and appropriate conduction band potential. However, photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction solely with TiO2 is still limited by the low solar energy conversion efficiency. To enhance the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction performance, researchers synthesized a composite material based on Er-doped TiO2 and Ce-modified UiO-66(Zr) using a simple solvent evaporation method. The experimental results reveal that compared with pristine UiO-66, this composite material exhibits a significantly improved CO2 conversion rate and product selectivity. The excellent activity of this catalyst is attributed to the direct Z-type heterojunction, which greatly improves photogenerated charge separation. Furthermore, UiO-66 (Zr/Ce)/Er-TiO2 (henceforth U1(0.5% Er-T3)) composite material exhibited excellent cycling stability in five consecutive stability tests, indicating long-term application potential. This research underscores the importance of designing and modifying MOF-based photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction and provides valuable insights for the development of sustainable energy conversion systems.

In this work, a label-free fluorimetric method for sensitive and selective detection of Cr(III) was developed by utilizing NaY/GdF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and citrate-modified silver nanoparticles (Cit-AgNPs) mixed system. The photophysical and morphological properties of the prepared UCNPs were characterized by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The fluorescence of amino-modified UCNPs can be quenched due to the Cr(III) induced aggregation of Cit-AgNPs by means of inner filter effect. The observed quenching in the fluorescence intensity of the UCNPs is found to be dependent on the concentration of Cr(III). The fluorescence decreases linearly within the investigated concentration of 0.5–40 μM Cr(III) with a limit of detection 34 nM. The practical applicability of the present sensing method is ascertained by detecting Cr(III) in spiked tap water and instant tea samples.

In lanthanide-sensitized upconversion (UC) nanomaterials, the typical sensitizer Yb3+ can significantly modulate the codoped activator (such as Er3+ ions) to generate multiband transitions. However, the kinetics of these multiband emissions affected by the Yb3+ concentration remains unclear. In this work, we employ nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopy to investigate a single optically trapped NaYF4:Yb/Er microcrystal (MC) doped with different Yb3+ concentrations. Interestingly, high doping Yb3+ ions shorten the UC response time by a factor of 10 (from ∼1 μs to ∼100 ns) compared to low doping Yb3+. Meanwhile, 430 nm light (4G7/2 → 4I11/2) emitted before 654 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) with Yb3+ dramatically increasing (opposite to the normal low Yb3+ doping cases), representing a new four-photon pathway (4I15/2 → 4I11/2 → 4F7/2 → 2H11/2 →4S3/2 → 2G7/2 → 4G11/2 → 2H9/2 → 2D5/2 → 4G7/2). Furthermore, we observed a broad range of time-dependent emission color, changing from being initially green over near-white to red. Particularly, the red emission is dominated in the decay process, yielding insight into the fundamental multiband UC kinetics. The result shows that varying the Yb3+ doping concentration provides a way to control the energy flow between the energy levels of Er3+ ions, which can modulate the response time and color evolution of UC on Yb/Er doped materials. This can direct the prospective development of fast-response optoelectronic devices, photocatalysis, and UC displays in the future.

Hispidulin is a medicinal natural compound isolated from S. involucrata, which exhibits potent anticancer properties. However, there are few reports on its effects on lung cancer cells. Therefore, the current study investigated the effects of hispidulin on cell viability and apoptosis in human non‑small‑cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines NCI‑H460 and A549 in vitro and in vivo. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium, colony formation assay, Hoechst 33342 staining, flow cytometry and western blotting were performed on Human NCI‑H460 and A549 cells. A mouse xenograft model was also established using NCI‑H460 cells. The results showed that the growth of NCI‑H460 and A549 cells was inhibited, while apoptosis was promoted by hispidulin via increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a dose‑dependent manner. Furthermore, hispidulin triggered apoptosis in NSCLC cells through upregulating the expression of cleaved caspase‑3 and cleaved poly [ADP‑ribose] polymerase. All these effects were reversed upon pretreatment with glutathione, a selective ROS inhibitor. In addition, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) in NCI‑H460 cells was activated by hispidulin. Pretreatment with tauroursodeoxycholic acid, a specific ER stress inhibitor, effectively reduced the cell apoptosis induced by hispidulin. In conclusion, hispidulin induces ROS‑mediated apoptosis via activating the ER stress pathway. The current study provides theoretical basis for the antitumor effect of hispidulin in NSCLC.

Ferroelectric ceramics with high electrostrain have been widely applied in actuators and sensors for their rapid response and precision. However, the current bottleneck is the inability to obtain superior electrostrain values along with high piezoelectric strain coefficient ( d 33 * ), limiting the practical applications. Herein, we report a remarkable enhancement of electrostrain values and d 33 * simultaneously in (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 0.93 Ba 0.07 Ti 1- x (Nb 0.5 Ga 0.5 ) x O 3 (BNBT- x NG, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06) ceramics with the integration of nonergodic/ergodic relaxor (NER/ER) boundary and defect engineering at room temperature. This strategy by combining NER/ER boundary and defect engineering allow for highly asymmetric strain-electric field (S-E) loops with an ultrahigh and temperature-insensitive electrostrain of 0.73% as well as giant piezoelectric strain coefficient of 913 pm/V simultaneously. The electrostrain value is greater than most of the reported lead-free ceramics and even exceeds those of conventional lead-based materials. This work suggests an effective method for developing new lead-free ceramics to achieve high piezoelectric response.
