Superhydrophobic surfaces are widely recognized for their exceptional anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties, making them suitable for diverse applications. However, their fragile micro-nano structures are susceptible to mechanical damage, leading to a progressive loss of superhydrophobicity. To address this limitation, a novel superhydrophobic coating exhibiting robust mechanical stability through a primer-topcoat strategy. The coating comprises a top layer of fluorocarbon resin/hydrophobic iron oxide nanoparticles, bonded to an epoxy-based adhesive underlayer. This design provides superior liquid repellency (CA > 150°) and enhances substrate adhesion. The resulting coating demonstrates exceptional durability, maintaining its superhydrophobicity even after extensive abrasion (over 1000 cycles), high-temperature exposure (400°C), and prolonged immersion in strongly alkaline environments (over 120 h). This study presents a straightforward yet effective method for fabricating durable superhydrophobic coatings that retain long-term self-cleaning and anti-fouling performance under harsh conditions. The developed system exhibits broad application potential for scenarios demanding robust surface functionality.

Fe 2 O 3 wrapped by few layered graphene nanosheets composites (Fe 2 O 3 -FLG) have been synthesized via a facile and massive one-step P-milling method, which is effective in reducing the particle size of Fe 2 O 3 and exfoliating the graphite into FLG . The composite shows good electrochemical performance due to the tight wrapping of FLG nanosheets , which is beneficial to electric conductivity and integrity of the electrode. The sample treated under 20 h retains a reversible capacity of 758 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 300 cycles, which equals to 88% of its theoretic capacity. With the superior electrochemical performance, Fe 2 O 3 -FLG composites prepared via the P-milling method could be promising as anode materials for high performance lithium-ion batteries.

Hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 hollow nanostructures are synthesized from the phase transition of Fe 2 O 3 hollow nanostructures, which are prepared through a dissolution-recrystallization process. The hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 hollow nanostructures, applied as an anode material for Na-ion batteries, display good rate capability and cycling stability. The reversible capacity of 150 mAh/g at 100 mA/g after 50 cycles can be maintained for Fe 3 O 4 anode. The superior Na-ion storage properties of hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 could be largely ascribed to the stable electrode structure during Na-ion insertion and extraction process. On the contrary, Fe 2 O 3 anode exhibits a high initial discharge capacity (686 mAh/g), but it suffers from poor cycling stability due to the remarkable pulverization of the electrode.

An S-scheme Ag/CdS/Fe 2 O 3 (Ag/CS/FO) heterojunction was fabricated via a sequential solvothermal and photodeposition method. The microstructure and optoelectronic properties of the synthesized ternary composite were verified by a series of characterization methods. The transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs (e − /h + pairs) follows an S-scheme pathway, driven synergistically by the interfacial electric field (IEF) and band bending. That directs electrons (e − ) to the conduction band (CB) of CdS (CS) and holes (h + ) to the valence band (VB) of Fe 2 O 3 (FO), achieving efficient e − /h + pairs separation while maintaining high redox capabilities. Additionally, the incorporated Ag nanoparticles enhance visible-light harvesting via the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and function as electron-transfer bridges, collectively promoting charge migration. Consequently, the composite exhibits high photocatalytic activity, degrading 98.68% of amoxicillin (AMX) under visible light. It also maintains 91.6% efficiency after four cycles, confirming sound stability. Notably, the material demonstrates superior performance in real-life water matrices (tap and river water), highlighting its strong application potential. Graphical abstract

Developing cost-effective and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is pivotal for the commercialization of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, nitrogen-doped porous carbon-supported Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterojunction electrocatalysts (Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 @NC) were synthesized via a supramolecular confinement strategy. By leveraging the melamine-folic acid framework to anchor FeCe Prussian blue analogues, a hierarchical porous carbon structure with uniform heterojunction nanoparticle dispersion was successfully constructed. Experimental characterization and DFT calculations reveal that the distinct work function difference between Fe 2 O 3 and CeO 2 induces spontaneous electron transfer, establishing a built-in electric field at the heterointerface. Synergized with abundant oxygen vacancies, this electronic modulation effectively optimizes the adsorption free energy of oxygen intermediates and lowers the rate-determining energy barrier. Consequently, the Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 @NC catalyst exhibits superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.83 V, rivaling commercial Pt/C, along with excellent methanol tolerance. Furthermore, the assembled liquid ZABs deliver a high peak power density of 146.4 mW cm −2 and demonstrate robust rechargeability for over 200 h, highlighting its potential for practical energy conversion applications.

Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A was constructed by ALD and electrochemical activation. • CoP acts as the key activation component, inducing Co-O-Mo cleavage and Co spin polarization. • Fe 2 O 3 loading triggers interfacial charge redistribution to further optimize Δ G H⁎ adsorption for HER. • Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A requires only 23 mV for HER and 180 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits robust stability after 1000 h. Cobalt-based oxide catalysts are promising for alkaline water electrolysis owing to their natural abundance and structural stability, yet their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity remains limited. Herein, a Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@cobalt molybdate hydrate/nickel foam (Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF) catalyst was constructed through hydrothermal synthesis, vapor-phase phosphorization and atomic layer deposition (ALD), followed by in situ electrochemical activation to regulate the spin state of Co sites, yielding Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A. Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance in 1.0 M KOH, requiring an overpotential of only 23 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and maintaining stability for over 1000 h. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that CoP/CMOH interfacial interaction induces Co-O-Mo bond cleavage under an applied reductive potential, decreases the coordination number of Co sites, increases the population of unpaired electrons, and promotes Co 3d electron rearrangement, thereby enhancing Co-site spin polarization and optimizing hydrogen adsorption. Fe 2 O 3 further strengthens interfacial charge redistribution, increasing the effective magnetic moment from 1.98 μ B to 4.09 μ B and optimizing Δ G H⁎ from −0.98 to −0.46 eV. The catalyst also delivers excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and long stability for over 1000 h. As a bifunctional catalyst, it reaches 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.44 V for overall water splitting and maintains a low HER overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for 1000 h in simulated seawater.

High-concentration antibiotic wastewater treatment presents a formidable challenge, and polyamide nanofiltration membranes have emerged as a promising solution to this challenge. However, efficient membranes and involved separation mechanisms are still being explored. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by pioneering the integration of bimetallic Fe 2 O 3 -Mn 2 O 3 nanoparticles into the polyamide selective layer, resulting in the development of a thin-film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane. The membrane showed impressive water permeance (10.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and a remarkable Na 2 SO 4 rejection (97.1 %). Three antibiotics (tetracycline, clindamycin phosphate, and tobramycin) with similar molecular weights but varying molecular conformation and charge were treated using these membranes. All three antibiotics exhibited substantial rejection rates: tetracycline at 97.1 %, clindamycin phosphate at 95.0 %, and tobramycin at 87.0 %. It was discerned that the separation efficacy was intimately tethered to both antibiotics’ molecular conformation and charge. Antibiotics possessing a rigid structural archetype, exemplified by tetracycline, attained highest rejection rates. Clindamycin phosphate, with its flexible molecular structure and negative charge, demonstrated a superior rejection rate to tobramycin, which has a positive charge. This differential performance is ascribed to the charge exclusion effect. The insights gained from this work hold significant implications for the practical application of membrane separation methods in treating antibiotic wastewater.

Methane selective catalytic reduction (CH4-SCR) represents a promising strategy for nitrogen oxides (NOx) abatement, yet its practical application is hindered by catalyst deactivation in the presence of water, caused by competitive adsorption on acid sites and irreversible hydroxylation of active metal species. In this study, we developed a dual-functional In@H-Beta/Fe2O3 catalyst through sequential ion-exchange and impregnation. This architecture confines indium species within the channels of H-Beta zeolite, while Fe2O3 nanoparticles are dispersed on the external surface, creating a synergistic system featuring a hydrophobic layer and strong Fe–O–In interfacial interactions. Under 5% H2O conditions, the optimized catalyst achieves 85% NOx conversion (vs 40% for conventional In@H-Beta). The enhanced water resistance is attributed to two factors: first, Fe2O3 establishes a physical barrier that protects acid sites and stabilizes InO+ active sites via Fe–O–In bonding, thereby inhibiting hydroxylation; second, strong interfacial Fe–O–In interactions further stabilize InO+ active sites against aqueous deactivation. Additionally, the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycle is proposed to facilitate O2 activation. In situ DRIFTS studies under 5% H2O confirm effective CH4 activation, as indicated by markedly more intense C–H stretching bands compared with In@H-Beta. The reaction pathway involves NO activation over Brønsted acid sites to form nitrate species, and CH4 activation on InO+ sites generating methyl radicals, which subsequently participate in NOx reduction. This work offers a new design strategy for developing highly active and water-tolerant CH4-SCR catalysts suitable for industrial flue gas treatment.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanodes is severely limited by poor bulk charge transport and sluggish surface oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we report a novel interstitial carbon doping strategy via glucose-assisted hydrothermal synthesis and annealing to synergistically address these bottlenecks. Unlike conventional carbon modifications (surface coating, which only improves interfacial properties, or substitutional doping, which induces lattice distortion), interstitial carbon doping simultaneously enhances bulk charge transport and surface OER activity without structural compromise. Specifically, interstitial C atoms induce lattice compression (confirmed by XRD peak shifts), increase carrier density to 2.57 × 10 18 cm -3 (6.2-fold higher than pristine α-Fe 2 O 3 ), and reduce electron transport time to 0.20 ms, while surface C-O/C=O groups accelerate OER kinetics by facilitating intermediate adsorption. The optimized C50-α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 1.80 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (6.3-fold enhancement), an onset potential negatively shifted to 0.82 V vs. RHE, and a maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 0.21 % at 1.02 V vs. RHE. This work demonstrates interstitial doping as a versatile approach to decouple bulk/surface property optimization, advancing α-Fe 2 O 3 for efficient solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion.

The use of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) as anode materials remains challenging because α-Fe 2 O 3 with poor conductivity and sluggish ionic transportation in the oxide lattice during energy storage. Herein, the hierarchically structured hollow acanthospheres (Fe 2 O 3 @C-HASs), for the first time, were prepared on carbon cloth (CC) by facile solvothermal method and self-sacrifice template method. Benefiting from its unique hierarchical hollow acanthospheres structures, a large specific surface area, transition-metal oxides and graphitized carbon layer, the hierarchically structured CC/Fe 2 O 3 @C-HASs electrode delivers an outstanding areal capacitance of 1712.1 mF cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 , which are far superior to CC/Fe 2 O 3 -HASs (777.8 mF cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 ). A 1.7 V flexible solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was successfully assembled with CC/Fe 2 O 3 @C-HASs as the anode, NiO on carbon cloth (CC/NiO) as the cathode, exhibiting a maximum volumetric energy density of 2.87 mWh cm −3 at a volumetric power density of 40.20 mW cm −3 , and excellent cycling stability (82.1% after 10,000 cycles). In this work, CC/Fe 2 O 3 @C-HASs can be used as an ideal anode material, which can provide a reference for the rational design and preparation of electrode material to asymmetric supercapacitors.

Piezocatalysis driven by a gentle force possesses broad application prospects for degrading organic pollutants , sterilisation, wound healing and tissue recovery. The flexible and industrially scalable poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film is commonly used in piezocatalysis. However, under gentle force action, PVDF composite-based piezocatalysis is poor. Herein, a flexible porous film based on poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoro propylene (PVDF-HFP) is enhanced with Fenton fillers (α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles). α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles improve the piezoelectric catalysis performance of PVDF-HFP by the β-phase enhancement and provide Fe 3+ to react with H 2 O 2 generated by the piezoelectric film itself, leading to an additional Fenton reaction . Meanwhile, the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle in the Fenton process accelerates under the piezoelectric field, promoting the Fenton reaction for 6.9% degradation improvement. The study on Fe 2 O 3 /PVDF-HFP porous film with the piezo–Fenton reaction under flowing water may help promote new piezocatalysis designs with high efficiency for self–powered environmental purification.
