In order to collect solar energy into vapor more efficiently, Ag@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with good photothermal properties were prepared in this study, and nanoparticle films were prepared by vacuum filtration of nanofluids to load nanoparticles on filter membrane, which exhibit good evaporation performance. The effects of fluid depth, nanoparticle loading surface density and light intensity on the evaporation performance were investigated. The experiments showed that the evaporation performance is the best at a light intensity of 2 sun, a surface density of 1.0 g/m 2 and a fluid depth of 30 mm (evaporation efficiency of 0.599 and heat efficiency of 0.824). In addition, the surface density is not conducive to the increase of water temperature when it exceeds a certain range. The increase of nanoparticle film surface density is mainly beneficial to evaporation rather than heat storage.

Magnetic nanotechnologies have been shown to be an efficient approach to the reduction of microplastic (MP) pollution in aquatic environments. However, uncertainties remain regarding the relationship between particle stability and MP removal under varying water conditions, hindering the practical application of magnetic nanotechnologies for MP removal. Herein, the influence of particle aggregation behavior on nano-scale MP removal by Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (FNPs) was investigated, by monitoring dynamic light scattering parameters and analyzing the microstructures of particle aggregates. Results showed that 83.1 %–92.9 % of MPs could be removed by FNPs within 1 h, and MP removal exhibited a high degree of Pearson correlation ( R = 0.95; P = 0.04) with particle aggregation behavior mediated by the FNPs dosage. Furthermore, pH-dependent electrostatic interactions significantly influenced particle aggregation behavior and the removal of MPs. Under pH <6.7 conditions, electrostatic attraction between electropositive FNPs and electronegative MPs led to charge neutralization-induced aggregation and efficient removal MP performance. Under increasingly saline conditions, compression of the electrical double layer enhanced the self-aggregation behavior of MPs, weakening the electrostatic repulsion between FNPs and MPs under alkaline conditions. Therefore, salinity improved the MP removal efficiency, especially under alkaline conditions, with MP removal increasing from 4.47 % to 55.1 % when the mass fraction of NaCl was increased from 0 % to 1 %. These findings further our understanding of the effect of aggregation behavior on MP removal by FNPs and highlight the potential for magnetic nanotechnology application in the removal of nano-scale MPs from aquatic environments, while also providing valuable insights for the design of FNP-based materials.

Graphical A colorimetric detection method based on Fe 3 O 4 /SnS 2 composites was established for the detection and discrimination of ten phenols for the first time. The incorporation of the photo catalyst SnS 2 significantly improved the peroxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 , leading to an enhancing efficiency of the colorimetric detection method. The developed method could rapidly determine the total phenols in real water samples. Phenols pose a great threat to human and environment due to their high toxicity and low bio-degradability. Therefore, the development of a rapid and sensitive detection method for multiple phenols is of great importance. Here, a colorimetric detection method based on Fe 3 O 4 /SnS 2 composites was established for the detection and discrimination of ten phenols for the first time. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of the photo catalyst SnS 2 significantly improved the peroxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 , leading to an enhancing efficiency of the colorimetric detection method. The developed method was capable of detecting phenol within a concentration range of 0.5–2000 μM, with detection limit as low as 0.06 μM. This method was successfully applied to detect total phenols in samples obtained from two sewage treatment plants and seawater. Furthermore, by employing principal component analysis, the established colorimetric method enabled the simultaneous discrimination of all ten phenols. The performance was further evaluated by accurately identifying binary or ternary mixtures of phenols, and even identifying the type of phenol in 10 unknown samples containing one of the ten phenols. These findings highlight the potential of the Fe 3 O 4 /SnS 2 composite as a promising candidate for the simultaneous detection of multiple phenols in liquid samples.

Core–shell microspheres refer to duo-layer or multilayer microspheres, which are widely used in drug delivery, microreactors, etc. Accurate manipulation of microspheres is a research hot spot, while traditional manipulation methods including ultrasonic manipulation and laser manipulation still face some limitations. In this study, magnetic core–shell microspheres were adopted to realize the accurate manipulation of microspheres. Combined with microfluidic technology, polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA)/Fe3O4 magnetic fluid was utilized as the core material and photosensitive acrylic resin became the shell material. After UV curing, a magnetic core–shell microsphere with an average size of 55 μm could be achieved, and the diameter was uniform and controllable. By adjusting the flow rate of the dispersed phase, the dual-core microspheres with different core particle sizes that ranged from 9.3 to 28.4 μm could be prepared. Experimental results showed that the prepared Fe3O4/acrylic resin core–shell microspheres can be used as functionalized microspheres that have good magnetic response properties and self-assembly ability. In addition, the magnetic manipulation and self-assembly of the prepared core–shell microspheres were presented with different external magnetic fields. The magnetic core–shell microspheres have shown great potential in the fields of biomedical engineering and targeted delivery of drugs.

The development of high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials is urgently needed to mitigate electromagnetic radiation pollution. Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) are promising EMI shielding materials because of their high metallic electrical conductivity . However, tuning the EMI shielding performance of MXene composites remains challenging via the structure engineering strategy. Herein, we develop a layer-by-layer assembling strategy to construct multilayer sandwiched hollow magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres (HFO)/MXene on flexible nonwoven fabrics . The fabricated Fe 3 O 4 /MXene composite fabrics (HFMs) exhibit low sheet resistance (4.6 Ω/□), super-hydrophobicity, self-cleaning, and good EMI shielding performance (EMI shielding effectiveness of 33.28 dB). More importantly, the EMI shielding mechanism of HFMs is tunable according to the loaded active materials. Thus, the mechanism can alternate from absorption to reflection. Moreover, the HFMs exhibit good electrothermal performance and can be used as a wearable heater for personal thermal management. This work provides a new approach for the structural design of high EMI shielding materials, and paves the way for the development of wearable electronics.

Mostly, enzyme activity is greatly reduced after immobilization due to unfavourable conformational change occurred during the immobilization procedure. Herein, we report a novel magnetic nanoparticle-based platform for Bacillus altitudinis esterase (EstBASΔSP) immobilization using dialdehyde starch (DAS) as a molecular glue. First polydopamine (PDA) was coated on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) with a controllable thickness. Thereafter, PDA-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 NPs were modified with dialdehyde starch (DAS) to provide the aldehyde groups, which was employed as a glue to further fix the EstBASΔSP on particle surface via covalent bonding, resulting in the formation of a sea-urchin-like esterase-immobilized magnetic nanoparticle. The obtained nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA/DAS) achieved an enzyme load of 162.72 mg/g and retained 65.7% of its specific enzyme activity, demonstrating better thermal and storage stability compared with the “polydopamine-coated” nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA) and free EstBASΔSP. In addition, in a chloramphenicol palmitate synthesis, the immobilized esterase (EstBASΔSP-Fe 3 O 4 @PDA/DAS) gave 99% conversion and purity in 21 h (chloramphenicol: 0.15 M, enzyme dosage: 50 mg/mL) and retained over 80% of its activity after 12 cycles. This study provides a general strategy for immobilizing enzyme on nanoparticles and employs them as a novel platform for enzyme-mediated biocatalytic reaction. Graphical Abstract

Magnetic nanomaterials have been shown to be effective additives to conductive materials for enhancing electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) shielding performance, but the comprehensive mechanism remains unknown. Herein, a 3D flexible carbon foam composite decorated with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was designed and constructed. The composite exhibited good flexibility and mechanical strength (approximately 45 KPa). Due to the synergistic effect of dielectric and magnetic losses, the composite delivered a shielding effectiveness (SE) of 21 dB in the X-band and a corresponding specific SE (SSE) value of 210 dB cm 2 /g. The transmission coefficient ( T ) was discovered to be as low as 0.008, indicating that the composite can successfully shield EM, while the reflection coefficient ( R ) was found to be higher than the absorption coefficient ( A ). Moreover, the complicated permittivity, permeability, and magnetism magnetization of the composite were discussed in order to better understand the origin of the composite's shielding behavior.

Cost-effective and eco-friendly treatment or recycled use of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is highly desired. Enzymatic PET degradation is considered a promising approach, but currently available PET hydrolases (PETases) have low activity at ambient temperature. Thus, elevating the reaction system temperature in a cost-effective way becomes a key to the economical enzymatic PET degradation. Herein, we proposed solar-driven enzymatic PET degradation with DuraPETase, a stable mutant of PETase, by using Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) as the solar-to-thermal agent. Simulated solar irradiation could elevate the suspension of Fe 3 O 4 NPs from 25 °C to 46 °C for the effective PET degradation. The enzyme immobilized onto Fe 3 O 4 NPs, [email protected] 3 O 4 , had higher stability than free DuraPETase, but a 10-d PET degradation experiments under simulated solar irradiation revealed that free DuraPETase in the presence of Fe 3 O 4 NPs was approximately three times more effective than the [email protected] 3 O 4 system because of the superiority of free DuraPETase in degrading PET. This implies that enzyme immobilization is unnecessary in such a single-use system. By contrast, the DuraPETase-only system showed only 15.5% efficiency of the Fe 3 O 4 -mediated solar-driven system with free DuraPETase. The research demonstrated the potential of the Fe 3 O 4 -mediated solar-driven enzymatic PET degradation strategy for further development in different practical scenarios

Sulfonamides (SAs) are one of the most widely used antibiotics and their residuals in the environment could cause some negative environmental issues . Advanced oxidation such as Fenton-like reaction has been widely applied in the treatment of SAs polluted water. Degradation rates of 95%-99.7% were achieved in this work for the tested 8 SAs, including sulfisomidine, sulfameter (SME), phthalylsulfathiazole, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfisoxazole, sulfachloropyridazine, and sulfadimethoxine, in the Fe 3 O 4 /peroxodisulfate (PDS) oxidation system after the optimization of PDS concentration and pH. Meanwhile, it was found that a lot of unknown oxidation products were formed, which brought up the uncertainty of health risks to the environment, and the identification of these unknown products was critical. Therefore, SME was selected as the model compound, from which the oxidation products were never elucidated, to identify these intermediates/products. With liquid chromatography-high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS), 10 new products were identified, in which 2-amino-5-methoxypyrimidine (AMP) was confirmed by its standard. The investigation of the oxidation process of SME indicated that most of the products were not stable and the degradation pathways were very complicated as multiple reactions, such as oxidation of the amino group, SO 2 extrusion, and potential cross-reaction occurred simultaneously. Though most of the products were not verified due to the lack of standards, our results could be helpful in the evaluation of the treatment performance of SAs containing wastewater.

The efficient removal of Cr(VI) in water with high solubility and mobility is of great significance because Cr(VI) is one of the most toxic heavy metals, but it also faces some major challenges. The dispersibility and recyclability of nanoadsorbents are closely related to their Cr(VI) removal efficiency. Herein, the self-assembly method was used to synthesize core-shell hybrid nanoparticles , named Fe 3 O 4 @LDH, with a vertically aligned layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) nanosheet shell and a Fe 3 O 4 magnetite core. The obtained Fe 3 O 4 @LDH nanoparticles exhibit a highly porous and well-ordered three-dimensional core-shell structure with a wool-ball-like morphology. The self-assembled morphology of the core-shell structure can be effectively controlled and induced by regulating the Mg 2+ /Al 3+ ratio of the reaction system. The influence mechanism of charge density of LDH brucite-like layers on the self-assembled morphology was proposed. Fe 3 O 4 @LDH nanoparticles exhibit a Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 108.7 mg/g. The synergetic contribution of the hybrid self-assembly of Fe 3 O 4 and MgAl-LDH leads to more dispersion, better adsorption capability, and faster kinetics. Moreover, because of the super-paramagnetic and highly saturated magnetization (34.53 emu/g) of the Fe 3 O 4 @LDH nanoparticles, they can be used as efficient magnetic adsorbents and easily separated using a magnetic field and reused. The prepared Fe 3 O 4 @LDH nanoparticles are a cost-effective nanoadsorbent for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater and provide a reference for the structural design and construction of nanocomposites .

Tumor metastasis is the main reason for the high mortality rate of breast cancer patients and lymph node metastasis is the primary means of tumor spreading. Liposomes loaded with bufalin (BF), a steroidal inhibitor of various inflammatory signaling pathways in cancer, and superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were developed to inhibit lymphatic metastasis in breast cancer. Fe 3 O 4 functioned as both a magnetic targeting and photothermal agent. In vivo studies using a mouse model of lymph metastatic breast cancer demonstrated that BF-Fe 3 O 4 -L(liposomes), administered by iv injection, accumulated in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) with high efficiency under magnetic direction and exhibited significant photothermal character under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. The combination of targeted delivery, photothermal and chemotherapeutic properties resulted in a 91% tumor inhibition rate in SLNs compared with untreated (PBS) controls and 81% lower incidence of pulmonary metastases formation. These findings reveal the significant potential of BF- Fe 3 O 4 -Ls for delivering -targeted, chemo-photothermal therapy in the treatment of metastasic cancer.
