This study was focused on the differences between three concentrations of four safe bio-active volatile terpenes and natural compounds (trans-cinnamaldehyde, thymol, menthol, and vanillin) on the egg yolk volatile components. In which, Headspace Solid phase Micro Extraction (HS-SPME) followed by GC/MS were used for volatiles analysis, and electronic nose (E-Nose) with 18 sensors was used for the aroma pattern. In the results, a total of 111 different volatile compounds were identified by using GC/MS. Some ketones, amines, nitro and organic acid compounds such as hexanone were significantly reduced after using these compounds. On the other hand, first principal components (PC1) of trans-cinnamaldehyde (0.1%) was decreased significantly ( p < .05) to −4.8 ± 0.8, compared to the control with 4.3 ± 2.1. And, it increased benzaldehyde and nonanal peaks area significantly to 46.56 ± 14.46 and 9.22 ± 4.81 MPA. In menthol (0.1%), the content of d-limonene was decreased to 4.65 ± 0.49 MPA, compared to the control with 14.16 ± 4.95 MPA. On the other hand, by E-Nose, vanillin (0.1%) PC1 was decreased significantly to −4.48 ± 0.43. Moreover, thymol (0.1%) decreased hydrocarbon sensation to 0.448 ± 0.005. And, vanillin (0.1%) decreased hydrogen sulfide and ketones sensation to 0.169 ± 0.01 and 0.344 ± 0.01, respectively. In conclusion, this study is providing novel information to understand the effects of bio-active molecules on the biological fatty media volatility. Also, it explains how terpenes can protect egg yolk media from the unacceptable odor formation which results from the degradation of its lipids and proteins.

Cultivated ginseng (CG), transplanted ginseng (TG) and mountain cultivated ginseng (MCG) classified by the habitat type all belong to Panax ginseng and were reported to have similar types of secondary metabolites. Nonetheless, owing to the distinctly diverse habitats in which these ginseng types grow, their pharmacological effects differ. In the present study, an emerging analytical approach involving headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC–MS) was established to effectively distinguish among CG, TG and MCG. First, the volatile components were analysed and identified by using the NIST library combined with measured retention indices (Kovats', RI), and a total of 78 volatile components were finally characterized, which included terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes and alkynols. Furthermore, multivariate statistical approaches, principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) were subsequently utilized to screen for compounds of significance. Under optimized HS-SPME-GC–MS conditions, 12, 16, and 16 differential markers were screened in the CG-TG, CG-MCG and TG-MCG groups, respectively. Our study suggested that HS-SPME-GC–MS analysis combined with metabolomic analytical methods and chemometric techniques can be applied as potent tools to identify chemical marker candidates to distinguish CG, TG and MCG.

This study described the rapid determination of potential aflatoxigenic fungi contamination on peanut kernels based on headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) coupled to fluorescence spectroscopy. Data-level and feature-level fusion strategies were introduced to integrate HS-GC-IMS and fluorescence spectra, aiming at improving the performances of identification and prediction models. The application of feature-level data fusion using first 10 PCs coupled with orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) offered more accurate characterization (96.7 %) for aflatoxigenic and non-aflatoxigenic fungal infection on peanut samples. Regression models were established for predicting colony counts of peanuts infected with aflatoxigenic fungi based on independent and fused signals by partial least squares regression (PLSR). Feature-level data fusion using first 10 PCs achieved the best performances in colony counts predictions for A. flavus (R 2 = 0.950) and A. parasiticus (R 2 = 0.971). These results demonstrated that the combination of HS-GC-IMS and fluorescence spectra might offer the feasibility for early detection of potential aflatoxigenic risk in peanuts.

A modified QuEChERS protocol with a nitrogen-doped graphitized carbon derived from dicyandiamide sludge as a cleanup sorbent has been developed to determine 20 organochlorine pesticides in tomatoes using gas chromatography coupled to a triple-quadrupole mass analyzer. Compared with traditional QuEChERS adsorbents, N-doped graphitized carbon exhibited higher recoveries toward the target pesticides in tomatoes. And the modified protocol exhibited the advantages of environmental-friendly and low-cost. The use of dicyandiamide sludge to produce NGB as an adsorbent for QuEChERS opened up a new field for the comprehensive utilization of dicyandiamide waste. Under the optimum conditions, the modified method provided excellent linearity with correlation coefficient higher than 0.9980 and low limits of detection ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 μg/kg. The mean recoveries of the majority of pesticides in tomatoes ranged from 71.2 to 95.3% with relative standard deviation lower than 20%. Thus, the proposed protocol could be considered a good alternative for traditional QuEChERS method for pesticide analysis in agricultural vegetables.

Magnetic matrix solid phase dispersion (MMSPD) assisted dispersive liquid liquid microextraction (DLLME) was applied to extract ultra traces of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from water samples prior to gas chromatography with electron capture detection. PCBs in water were adsorbed by micro particles of magnetic bamboo charcoal and then transferred into the elution solvent. PCBs in the elution solvent of the MMSPD were further concentrated into trace volume extraction solvent of the DLLME procedure. Under optimized conditions, good linearity in the range of 0.2–100 ng L −1 was obtained with regression coefficients (r) higher than 0.9987. Based on a signal-noise ratio of 3, the limits of detection (LODs) range from 0.05–0.1 ng L −1 . These LODs are much lower than those of MMSPD or DLLME alone. Relative standard deviations are between 4.9–8.2 %. The method was successfully applied to the determination of PCBs in lake and river water. Relative recoveries were 85.5–117.4 % for the spiked environmental water samples.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were adsorbed by micro particles of magnetic bamboo charcoal (MBC) and then eluted. PCBs were further concentrated into a trace volume of the extraction solvent used in dispersive liquid liquid microextraction.

Xinhui Chenpi (XHCP) is a well-known type of Chenpi (CP) widely used as both a Chinese herb and a food ingredient. While previous studies have explored how the quality of CP changes over time, there has been limited research specifically on XHCP. This study aims to assess the chemical components and quality of XHCP based on total flavonoid content (TF), antioxidant activity (AA), and color value (CV) at two stages: freshly harvested (XHCP-0Y) and after 3 years of storage (XHCP-3Y). Thirty-eight common volatile compounds were identified, and the content of 17 compounds among them, nine nonvolatile compounds, which included one alkaloid (synephrine), three phenolic acids (PA, protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, and ferulic acid), and five flavonoids (narirutin, hesperidin, sinensetin, nobiletin, and tangeretin), were firstly detected by the newly developed gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC–MS) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) methods. Compared to XHCP-0Y, the content of 17 volatile compounds and synephrine decreased in XHCP-3Y to varying degrees, while the content of PA, five flavonoids, TF, AA, and CV increased. The reduction of dryness caused by volatile compounds and the enhancement of efficacy related to PA, flavonoids, and AA suggested improved quality of XHCP after 3 years of storage. The methods developed in this study show promise for evaluating the quality of XHCP during the aging process.

Rationale Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (AR) has been a frequently utilized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for an extended period, with its salt-processed variant being a prevalent application form. Contemporary pharmacological investigations have demonstrated that the salt-processed iteration exhibits a multitude of markedly augmented pharmacological properties. However, whether the pharmacodynamic material basis of this change is related to volatile substances remains unclear. The aim of this study was to develop a strategy to screen volatile pharmacodynamic substances in AR and salt-processed AR (SAR). Methods A comprehensive approach was developed to identify volatile pharmacodynamic compounds by integrating plant metabolomics, target network pharmacology, and molecular docking technology. Plant metabolomics using GC–MS analysis was conducted to identify volatile chemical markers distinguishing between AR and SAR. Subsequently, network pharmacology was utilized to investigate the correlation between chemical markers and associated diseases. Following this, molecular docking technology was utilized to explore the correlation between chemical markers and disease targets, resulting in the discovery of potential quality control markers. Results Fifty volatile compounds were isolated and identified in the salt of AR and SAR. The findings from plant metabolomics analysis demonstrated a distinct differentiation, revealing 13 volatile chemical markers that distinguish between AR and SAR. A target (PPARG) associated with diabetes was identified through target network pharmacology analysis. Thirteen volatile components were subsequently chosen as potential quality markers, taking into account their hypoglycemic activity. Conclusions The method developed provides a novel strategy for the identification of pharmacophores in AR and SAR, as well as establishing a foundation for the exploration of the volatile differential components and pharmacodynamics in various processed products of TCMs. Additionally, the findings of this study can serve as a theoretical framework for the development and utilization of volatile components in AR and its processed derivatives.

A method based on headspace solid-phase microextraction fiber derivatization (HS-SPME-FD) coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-TQ/MS) was developed to quantify 18 flavor-related carbonyl compounds in roasted lamb. Optimization of derivatization conditions established the following optimal parameters: a 3 g/L concentration of O-2,3,4,5,6-(pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA), fiber loading at 50 °C for 5 min, followed by simultaneous extraction/derivatization at 50 °C for 30 min. The method was validated for linearity, limits of detection (LOD), limits of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy. Results confirmed the method's suitability for determining carbonyl compounds in roasted lamb. During roasting, the composition and concentration of carbonyl compounds increased significantly, with hexanal being the most abundant. Additionally, the method detected carbonyl compounds in the model system at levels comparable to real roasted lamb, validating both the model's accuracy and the method's quantitative precision.

The increasing demand for high quality fertilizer, which is being driven by human nutrition demand and agricultural soil protection, necessitates sustainable alternatives to be used as vegetable production. Thus, utilizing biochar (BC), bacterial fertilizer and their combination with organic fertilizer (OF) could be a sustainable approach. In our research work, OF, BC, liquid bacterial fertilizer (LB), and solid bacterial fertilizer (SB) were used to investigate different fertilizer combinations. Greenhouse field experiment was conducted to compare different fertilizer application and their effects on cabbage biomass, cabbage characteristics and soil physical and chemical properties. The results showed that combined application OF, BC, and LB promoted cabbage growth and resulted in the highest yield of 16.6 kg/m 2 . The vitamin C content was highest at 48.4 mg/kg with the combined application OF, BC, and SB treatment. The combined application OF, BC, and SB achieved the best overall comprehensive evaluation for cabbage biomass weight, vitamin C content, and total sugar content. The combined application OF and a bacterial fertilizer improved soil properties, while the addition of BC reduced the soil nutrient content. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) analysis showed that volatile organic compounds from cabbages were mainly esters, alcohols, acids, acetates, aldehydes, and ketones. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of different fertilizer applications and their effects on cabbage quality and rhizosphere soil.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation enhances the flavor and nutritional profile of foods. Nevertheless, the specific mechanism by which Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ( L. plantarum ) B22, a strain exhibiting high lipase activity, enhances flavor formation in fermented cream remains unclear. This study employed GC-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS) volatilomics and lipidomics to elucidate the flavor formation mechanism with L . plantarum B22 in fermented cream. Sensory evaluation demonstrated that L. plantarum B22 fermented cream (LSB) scored significantly higher than commercial starter cultures fermented cream (LS) in terms of texture, taste, aroma, and overall acceptability. The key VOCs were acetoin, 2-nonanone, δ-dodecalactone, δ-octalactone, δ-decanolactone, benzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-3-pentanone, and 2,3-butanedione. Moreover, LSB exhibited elevated levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including linolenic acid (LA, 18:2), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5). Correlation analysis demonstrated that 59 lipid species were significantly associated with the flavor profiles of LSB. Crucially, the FA (18:3) was identified as a key precursor for the biosynthesis of δ-dodecalactone, δ-octalactone, and δ-decanolactone. This study provides novel mechanistic insights into how high-lipase-activity L . plantarum B22 promotes characteristic flavor formation in fermented cream via targeted regulation lipid degradation, offering valuable guidance for developing premium fermented dairy products.

A deep eutectic solvents-based ferrofluids (DES-FFs) material was prepared by combining small-sized Fe 3 O 4 magnetic cores with a ternary choline chloride/sesamol/coumarin (1:3:1) DESs. The material was used for single-step magnetic-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (MALLME) and determination of 15 pyrethroids (PYs) in vegetable oils by GC–MS/MS. The small-sized Fe 3 O 4 material improved colloidal stability of DES-FFs and enabled rapid phase separation (<10 s). The DES-FFs might leverage enhanced π-π stacking interactions between sesamol/coumarin and PYs, and optimal hydrophilicity-polarity matching, which collectively contributed to the high extraction efficiency for PYs. Comprehensive characterization (HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, etc.) validated the material's structural integrity, thermal stability and magnetic property. The developed method demonstrated high sensitivity (LODs: 0.91–3.03 ng/mL; LOQs: 3.02–10.09 ng/mL), significantly reduced matrix effect, and good precision (RSD ≤6.92%) for 15 PYs in vegetable oils, with recoveries ranging from 79.88% to 107.90%. Determination of 15 PYs was successfully achieved in both refined and crude vegetable oils.
