Mg(NO3)2·6H2O-LiNO3 eutectic/expanded graphite composite phase change material for thermal energy storage applications

Hui Wang,Enda Ci,Xiaoqing Li,Ying Zhang,Zhenying Zhang,Jianqiang Li

A new eutectic mixture phase change material containing magnesium nitrate hexahydrate and lithium nitrate has been successfully prepared, which can be applied in the field of residential radiator heating due to the suitable phase change temperature and high latent heat. Further, by physical blending magnesium nitrate hexahydrate/lithium nitrate eutectic mixtures and expanded graphite, the new composites were prepared. The crystalline structure, thermal properties, corrosion performance of eutectic phase change materials were systematically measured. The results showed that the best eutectic mixtures had a phase change temperature of 72.35 °C and latent heat of 170.32 kJ/kg, with a little supercooling degree. The thermal conductivity was effectively improved by adding expanded graphite. Meanwhile, corrosion tests suggested aluminum and stainless steel 304 could be the preferred choices as the container. Overall, the prepared eutectic composite materials with superior performances could be a promising candidate for the residential radiator heating field.

Dual functional salt-responsive and self-healing composite coating for enhanced corrosion resistance of AZ31B Mg alloy

Haoyuan Fan,Jie Cheng,Ru Bai,Ning Li,Li Wang

Conventional self-healing anti-corrosion coatings face limitations in corrosion inhibitor release kinetics, triggering conditions, and inhibition efficiency, which compromise their protective effectiveness for magnesium alloys. In this study, we developed a novel dual-functional PEO/EP@PIN composite coating with salt-responsive self-healing properties. The coating system innovatively combines a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) interlayer with an epoxy (EP) topcoat embedded with polyaniline (PANI) microcapsules containing 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (IN) ionic liquid corrosion inhibitor. The PANI microcapsules enable rapid Na + -triggered inhibitor release in high-salinity environments, while the PEO layer ensures robust interfacial adhesion to the Mg substrate. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the coating achieves an ultralow corrosion current density of 6.26 × 10 −11 A·cm −2 , representing a 7-order-of-magnitude reduction compared to bare Mg alloy, while maintaining a high impedance modulus of 8.97 Ω·cm 2 after 30 days of immersion in 5.0 wt% NaCl solution. Scratch-healing experiments and XPS analysis revealed that the released IN inhibitor forms Mg-N/S chemical bonds with the substrate and generates hydrolyzed Mg(OH)₂ barrier phases, effectively blocking corrosive media penetration. This work elucidates the salt-responsive and self-healing mechanisms of the coating, providing new insights for developing smart anti-corrosion coatings for magnesium alloys.

Dual-functional hybrid quaternized chitosan/Mg/alginate dressing with antibacterial and angiogenic potential for diabetic wound healing

Minqi Wang,Yiqi Yang,Kai Yuan,Shengbing Yang,Tingting Tang

Background Clinic treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is considerably challenging. Impaired wound healing may be caused by poor vascularization and dysfunction of the extracellular matrix, which leads to poor re-epithelialization and increased risk of infection. In this study, we evaluated the treatment potential of a functional dressing comprising quaternized chitosan (hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan) and magnesium (Mg) on DFUs. Methods Dressings were prepared by vacuum freeze-drying. The cellular proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis potential of the functional dressings were determined in vitro. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA , ATCC43300) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis 287 (MRSE287) were used to evaluate the antibacterial efficiency of the dressings. Finally, a diabetic rat model with infected wounds was used to further evaluate the effects of functional dressings on the healing of DFUs. Results Functional dressings facilitated the migration of human dermal fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), while also stimulating angiogenesis in HUVECs. Additionally, the functional dressing could effectively eradicate MRSA and MRSE, exhibiting excellent antibacterial ability against drug-resistant bacteria. The results of in vivo microbiological and histological tests demonstrated effective anti-infection ability and wound-healing potential of this functional dressing. Conclusions The dual-functional dressing exhibited wound-healing ability and anti-infection efficiency, demonstrating potential application prospects in DFU treatment. Translational potential of this article As one of the common and serious complications of diabetes, DFUs do not heal easily, causing great suffering to patients. Therefore, improvement in the prognosis of DFUs is a crucial clinical need. The dual-functional dressing prepared in this study was proven to improve the treatment of DFUs, both in vitro and in vivo. Considering its urgent clinical necessity and good biocompatibility of its raw materials, such as alginate, Mg, and chitosan derivatives, this dual-functional dressing presents good prospects for clinical translation.

Evenly distribution of amorphous iron sulfides on reconstructed Mg-Al hydrotalcites for improving Cr(VI) removal efficiency

Ruixin Yan,Xiuping Feng,Long Kong,Qun Wan,Weilin Zheng,Takeshi Hagio,Ryoichi Ichino,Xinde Cao,Liang Li

Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)) in water is a public health concern and has been a challenging research subject in environmental field for many years. Herein, a novel composite material consisting of amorphous iron sulfides supported on hydrotalcites (FeS/HTs) was synthesized by “calcination-reconstruction-calcination” process, which enables homogeneous distribution of iron and sulfur on the surface of hydrotalcites (HT). The composite (mass ratio of FeS/HT was 1/2) could effectively remove over 98% of Cr(VI) within 10 min. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model were well fitted the sorption data with a maximum removal capacity of 206.2 mg/g. The superior adsorption capacity of FeS/HTs could be attributed to the combination of the advantages of abundant adsorption sites on HT and powerful reduction properties of iron sulfides. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggested the adsorbed Cr(VI) on the surface and interlayer of FeS/HTs had been reduced to Cr(III) by reductant iron and sulfur. This study demonstrated that FeS/HTs has potential application prospects in Cr(VI) removal.

Facile synthesis of bowl-like 3D Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4–fluorographene composite with unexpected superior dehydrogenation performances

Jiaguang Zheng,Xuezhang Xiao,Liuting Zhang,Shouquan Li,Hongwei Ge,Lixin Chen

A remarkable improvement in the hydrogen desorption performance of Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4 eutectic composite is achieved by simply ball-milling with fluorographene (FG). It is found that the desorption temperature of Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4 (∼200 °C) is still too high and liquid phase appears during dehydrogenation. Particularly, the novel bowl-like 3D Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4–FG composite can be formed after ball-milling. The novel Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4–FG exhibits a low dehydrogenation temperature of 114.9 °C with 6.9 wt% of pure hydrogen in seconds. In-depth investigations show that such greatly improved hydrogen desorption properties of the Mg(BH4)2–NaBH4–FG composite could be ascribed to both the “novel bowl-like 3D structure” with large specific surface area and the “reactant destabilized modification” owing to the decrease of the reaction enthalpy caused by the formation of NaMgF3. This finding provides a facile preparation of complex borohydride composites with low dehydrogenation temperature and fast rate, which accelerates its practical application in fuel cells.

Zn Promoted Mg-Al Mixed Oxides-Supported Gold Nanoclusters for Direct Oxidative Esterification of Aldehyde to Ester

Jie Li,Shiyi Wang,Huayin Li,Yuan Tan,Yunjie Ding

The synthesis of ester compounds is one of the most important chemical processes. In this work, Zn-Mg-Al mixed oxides with different Zn2+/Mg2+molar ratios were prepared via co-precipitation method and supported gold nanoclusters to study the direct oxidative esterification of aldehyde and alcohol in the presence of molecular oxygen. Various characterization techniques such as N2-physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and CO2temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were utilized to analyze the structural and electronic properties. Based on the results, the presence of small amounts of Zn2+ions (~5 wt.%) provoked a remarkable modification of the binary Mg-Al system, which enhanced the interaction between gold with the support and reduced the particle size of gold. For oxidative esterification reaction, the Au25/Zn0.05MgAl-400 catalyst showed the best performance, with the highest turnover frequency (TOF) of 1933 h−1. The active center was believed to be located at the interface between metallic gold with the support, where basic sites contribute a lot to transformation of the substrate. Keywords:gold catalyst;cluster;hydrotalcite;oxidative esterification;methyl isobutyrate

Preparing a Bioactive (Chitosan/Sodium Hyaluronate)/SrHA Coating on Mg–Zn–Ca Alloy for Orthopedic Implant Applications

Feng Yashan,Chang Lei,Zhu Shijie,Yang Yongxin,Wei Baoli,Lv Meng,Wang Jun,Guan Shaokang

The uncontrollable rapid degradation rate of the Mg alloy substrate limited its clinical application, and implant-associated infections have been reported to be the main reason for the secondary surgery of orthopedic implantation. The aim of this study was to produce a multifunctional coating on magnesium-based alloys that have improved corrosion resistance, bioactivity, and antibacterial properties through the preparation of polyelectrolytic multilayers (PEMs) consisting of chitosan (CS) and sodium hyaluronate (HA) on silane-modified strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite (hereafter referred to as Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA). The multifunctional coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed the polyelectrolyte complex SH/CS layer to be uniformly and tightly attached on to the surface of silane-treated SrHA. At the same time, a potentiodynamic polarization test and hydrogen evolution test showed the Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings to exhibit superior corrosion resistance than bulk Mg-based alloys. The results of the cell–surface interactions revealed Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings to be in favor of cell initial adhesion and more beneficial to the proliferation and growth of cells with the processing of co-culture. In addition, antibacterial tests demonstrated the strong bactericidal effect of Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus (S. aureus), suggesting that Bil (SH + CS)/SrHA coatings can successfully achieve multifunctionality with enhanced corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties.

Mg and P Codoped Chitosan-Based Composite Aerogel with Excellent Thermal Insulation, Flame Retardancy, and Formaldehyde Adsorption

Weijun Liu,Zhaoqi Zhu,Yunxin Ai,Hanxue Sun,Jiyan Li,Rui Jiao,An Li

Developing multifunctional materials that combine low thermal conductivity with high flame retardancy is key to meeting the demands of modern energy-efficient buildings. Chitosan (CS), with its natural biogenic properties and significant inherent flame retardancy, provides a unique design basis for high-performance thermal insulation and flame-retardant materials. In this work, we use an in situ coprecipitation strategy to load ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and magnesium phosphate compounds (main phase MgNH4PO4·6H2O) onto the three-dimensional framework of CS, successfully constructing a Mg and P codoped chitosan-based composite aerogel (recorded as CS@APP@Mg–P aerogel) that synergistically enhances thermal insulation and flame retardancy. This material exhibits thermal insulation properties, with a thermal conductivity as low as 0.0251 W m–1·K–1, primarily attributed to the three-dimensional network structure and high porosity of the chitosan matrix. Its flame-retardant performance meets the UL-94 V-0 standard, with a peak heat release rate (pHRR) as low as 17.30 kW m–2, significantly outperforming similar composite materials. Additionally, the aerogel exhibits high adsorption capacity for formaldehyde (average adsorption rate >80%). The comprehensive performance mentioned above is attributed to the synergistic interaction among the CS matrix, APP flame retardant, and magnesium phosphate reinforcing phase (MgNH4PO4·6H2O). This provides a strategy for developing biobased aerogels that integrate thermal insulation, flame retardancy, and formaldehyde adsorption, offering broad application prospects in energy-efficient buildings and indoor air purification.

Dissolution-Equilibrium-Driven Continuous Regeneration of a Dynamic Mg3Bi2/Bi Magnesiophilic Interphase for Efficient Mg Plating/Stripping

Yuanxiang Zhang,Maosheng Cui,Mengting Yuan,Zhen Mu,Han Wang,Xinchun Zhou,Yang Zhang,Lingxiu Chen,Xiaolan Xue

Magnesium metal batteries (MMBs) are promising candidates for sustainable energy storage, yet their development is severely hindered by the formation of passivation layers on the Mg anode. Conventional artificial interphase layers often suffer from progressive defunctionalization during prolonged cycling. Herein, we propose a chemical-dissolution-equilibrium-driven strategy that continuously supplies Bi3+ species to spontaneously construct an in situ Mg3Bi2/Bi protective layer on the Mg electrode surface. This self-sustaining interphase not only enables continuous interfacial repair but also provides abundant magnesiophilic nucleation sites, thereby facilitating highly efficient Mg plating/stripping. As a result, the Mg||Mg symmetric cell exhibits an ultralong cycling life exceeding 1500 h with an ultralow overpotential of 30 mV at 0.5 mA cm–2 and 0.25 mAh cm–2. Moreover, the preferential reduction of Bi3+ on various current collectors creates favorable nucleation sites for Mg deposition, leading to high Coulombic efficiencies in Mg||Cu, Mg||SS, and Mg||Mo asymmetric cells. Remarkably, the Mg||SS cell achieves a cycling life exceeding 1400 h with an average Coulombic efficiency of ∼99.84% and a low polarization voltage of 90 mV. This work underscores the critical role of a sustained dynamic interphase and establishes a new paradigm for designing nonaqueous, all-inorganic electrolytes for high-performance MMBs.

Tunable interfaces of Mg-Zr composite oxides boost acid-base synergy for efficient transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde

Lingmei Yang,Wei Lv,An Wei,Baining Lin,Guoling Zhang,Bing Han

Mg-Zr composite oxides with tailored Mg-O-Zr interfacial structure weresynthesized. • Synergistic Mg-O-Zr interfacial structure integrates matched acid-basic sites • Isopropanol transfer hydrogenation achieved superior benzyl alcohol yield(89.6%). • Robust stability retained benzyl alcohol yield 82.0% after four reuse cycles. Non-noble metal composite oxide catalysts Mg x Zr 1-x O y featuring an acid–base bifunctional synergistic structure were synthesized via the co-precipitation-calcination method. Under a nitrogen atmosphere, with isopropanol serving as both the hydrogen donor and solvent, selective transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol was achieved. The characterization revealed that the optimized Mg 0.7 Zr 0.3 O y catalyst possesses a highly crystalline Mg-Zr mixed-oxide structure with well-matched acidic Zr 4+ sites and surface basic sites of different strengths, including weakly basic hydroxyl species and moderate basic sites associated with interfacial oxygen species. The catalyst exhibits uniform distribution of surface sites and an appropriate pore structure, thereby providing excellent adsorption capacity and mass transfer efficiency. Under optimized conditions, the catalyst delivered nearly full benzaldehyde conversion up to 96.5% and an 89.6% yield of benzyl alcohol, together with a low apparent activation energy of 54.55 kJ·mol⁻¹. Notably, the catalyst retained a BnOH yield of 82.0% after four recycling cycles, indicating remarkable cycling stability. Compared with noble metal catalysts and monometallic oxide catalysts, the developed Mg 0.7 Zr 0.3 O y catalytic system delivers high activity, excellent selectivity, while offering the advantages of low cost and facile synthesis. This provides an efficient and stable non-noble metal catalytic solution for the selective transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol and offers mechanistic insights and design principles for acid-base bifunctional composite oxides. K-Mg Co-doping enabling fast Na+ diffusion kinetics and structural stability in Na3V2(PO4)2F3 cathodes

Qing Xu,Guojie Wu,Jiamin Deng,Xi Ke,Zhicong Shi,Liying Liu

Large K + ions act as structural pillars to enhance crystal stability. • Mg doping introduces additional vacancies to accelerate Na + diffusion. • K Mg co-doping significantly enhances rate performance and cycling stability at 4.5 V. The polyanionic compound Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NVPF) cathode material has attracted extensive attention due to its high theoretical specific capacity (128 mAh g −1 ) and energy density (500 Wh kg −1 ). The primary bottleneck for NVPF is the low intrinsic electronic conductivity, which results in poor long cycling and rate performance. A K Mg co-doped Na 2.92 K 0.08 V 1.95 Mg 0.05 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NKVMPF) cathode material is designed in this work to address the above problem. K Mg co-doping improves the Na + diffusion kinetics and crystal structure stability of NVPF due to the increased lattice volume, introduced additional vacancies, and the pillar supporting role of K + with larger radius. At a potential window of 2.0 V–4.5 V, the NKVMPF delivers superior rate performance and long-term cycle ability compared to NVPF, with a specific discharge capacity of 66.9 mAh g −1 at the high current rate of 20C and a capacity retention of 81.1% after 250 cycles at 0.2C. This work provides a binary doping strategy suitable for polyanion cathode materials and offers a new perspective for the development of high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs).

Preparation and characterization of micro-arc oxidation coatings on AZ91D Mg alloy fabricated in a TEOS electrolyte

Zhihong Wang,Tianyu Zhang,Dong Han,Wenkang Yi,Ruina Ma,An Du,Yongzhe Fan,Xue Zhao,Xiaoming Cao

Amorphous SiO 2 /MgO/MgSiO 3 coatings formed on AZ91D via MAO in TEOS electrolyte. • Due to its dense layer, this coating exhibits high corrosion resistance at 50 Hz. • Amorphous SiO 2 /MgO/MgSiO 3 coatings show optimal thermal control at 500 Hz. • Explains the growth mechanism of the coating. In this paper, AZ91D magnesium alloy is used as the substrate, and thermal control and corrosion resistant composite coatings are prepared by micro-arc oxidation technology in tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis electrolyte at different pulse frequencies (50 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz). The effects of pulse frequency on the microstructure, corrosion resistance, and thermal control performance of the coatings are systematically studied. The results show that the coatings are mainly composed of SiO 2 , MgO, and MgSiO 3 . As the frequency decreases, the content of amorphous SiO 2 in the coating increases, and both the thickness and roughness increase significantly. Electrochemical tests show that the coating prepared at 50 Hz exhibits the optimal corrosion resistance, with a corrosion current density as low as 1.017 × 10⁻⁸ A/cm², and its dense inner layer resistance increases by 2.8 orders of magnitude compared with that of the coating prepared at 2000 Hz. In terms of thermal control performance, the coating at 500 Hz shows the best comprehensive thermal control performance, with an emissivity of 0.89 and an absorptivity as low as 0.30, which is attributed to the moderate thickness (about 143 μm) and roughness, the dense structure, and the intrinsically low absorptivity and high emissivity characteristics of amorphous SiO 2 . In this study, SiO 2 /MgO/MgSiO 3 composite coatings are prepared on the Mg substrate surface, which provides a new idea for the preparation of multifunctional coatings.
