Bimetallic MOFs-derived hierarchical WO3/ZnWO4/CoWO4 heterostructures for enhanced n-butanol gas-sensing performance

Xueying Wang,Qian Ma,Yi Wang,Lingyu Li,Dongheng Zhao,Huayushuo Zhang,Bolong Li

Bimetallic MOFs-derived hierarchical WO 3 /ZnWO 4 /CoWO 4 heterostructures were prepared by electrospinning for achieving superior n-butanol-sensing property at low operating temperatures. Porous chain-like structures can gradually transformed into porous mulberry-like structures composed of various accumulated particles as increasing the additive amount of Zn/Co-ZIFs. High selectivity and stability of WO 3 -based composites to 100 ppm n-butanol can be observed at 25 °C, including the large sensitivity of 32 and the fast response/recovery times of 115/179 s. The enhanced gas-sensing performance is primarily ascribed to the increased specific surface area, plentiful polyoxometalate, and effective heterojunctions, obviously promoting surface/interface absorption behavior and electron transport process.

A pH-responsive MOFs@MPN nanocarrier with enhancing antifungal activity for sustainable controlling myclobutanil release

Yushan Hou,Yaowei Zhang,Yanyan Huang,Ailing Zhou,Jiatong Han,Kexin Yang,Yiming Zhao,Jie Zhou,Jing Wang,Ge Chen,Xiaomin Xu,Donghui Xu,Jun Lv,Jing Chen,Honghao Lv,Guangyang Liu

The pH-responsive metal–organic framework (MOF) nanocarriers for sustainable controlled release of pesticides is promising in agricultural production owing to their long duration, high loading efficiency and antimicrobial activity. In this work, myclobutanil (MYC) was loaded into an Ag-based MOF (Ag-TCPP), and modified with a metal-phenolic network (MPN) via in-situ polymerization to construct a pH-responsive nano-delivery system (Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN). Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN presented a disordered nanoflower structure and many active sites with potential enhanced loading activity. The cumulative release rates of nanoparticles at pH 4.96, 7.5, and 8.5 were 52.6 %, 62.6 % and 80.0 %, respectively. Hence, Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN has slow release rate and pH responsiveness. The antifungal activity of Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN was significantly enhanced, and the bacteriostatic rate reached 81.8 %. This enhancement may be attributed to the synergistic antibacterial effect between tannic acid and Ag + . Safety experiments showed the nanoparticles had no inhibitory effect on the germination of Pakchoi seeds, and the pesticide residues of Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN did not exceed the food safety standards. This work offers a new potential to develop improved responsive stimulus nanocarriers for sustainable controlled release of MYC.

Advanced PPS/MOFs composite nanofiltration membranes derived from contra-diffusion synthesis for precise molecular separation

Huixin Lu,Xiaotian Wang,Tao Deng,Xi Du,Zhenhuan Li,Maliang Zhang

To meet the separation requirements of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) membranes in extremely harsh environments and to enhance the separation performance of PPS membrane material, this study utilizes Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) material with a porous structure to modify the structure of the PPS membranes. Using the Contra-diffusion synthesis method, we successfully created PPS composite membranes that were modified by ZIF-8. At the end of the three-hour reaction time, a continuous and dense layer of ZIF-8 crystals with uniform crystal size and regular crystal shape was produced on the matrix membrane's surface. The permeance to rhodamine B aqueous solution is 42.54 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , and the retention rate is 99.5 %, which has high permeability and retention performance. In the anti-pollution performance test, the composite membrane's flux recovery rate is 72.9 %, which has good anti-pollution performance. After immersion in strong acids, strong alkalis, and a variety of organic solvents, the appearance shows no evident flaws, and the separation performance in strong alkalis and five different types of organic solvents stays steady, demonstrating excellent alkali and solvent resistance. This proves that composite membranes have great potential for application in dye wastewater treatment.

Construction of nano-cage imprinted sites in MOFs-based membrane for precise identification and separation

Hang Cui,Jing Yan,Faguang Ma,Zequan Diao,Ming Yan,Yilin Wu,Jianming Pan

Here, ribavirin (RBV) was introduced into metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in this instance to direct the in situ fabrication of appropriate nanocage structures to facilitate the targeted binding of RBV. Well-designed nano-caged RBV imprinted membranes (NCRIMs) have remarkable antifouling capabilities and can selectively separate RBV from wastewater generated by the RBV production process by constructing imprinting sites inside the molecule. Polydopamine (PDA) is rich in hydrophilic groups (hydroxyl and amino groups) that interact with water molecules via hydrogen bonding, thereby generating a hydrate layer on the membrane surface. The synthesized RBV imprinted sites were homogeneously scattered at the interface and inside of the membrane, resulting in a satisfactory selectivity. Notably, methacrylic acid and acrylamide act as functional monomers that synergistically promote the ability to selectively recognise RBV imprinting sites. It was demonstrated that NCRIMs had favourable rebinding selectivity ( α RBV/ACV  = 3.28, α RBV/AZT  = 2.48, α RBV/LAM  = 3.72) as well as partial selectivity ( β RBV /LAM  = 9.48, β RBV/AZT  = 8.20, β RBV/ACV  = 2.95), indicating the potential of NCRIMs in practical application. What is significant is that the cooperative imprinting and modification methods devised in this study offer directions for the selective isolation of valuable components from complex environments, as well as a reference towards the design of potentially highly resistant membranes.

Reticular Synthesis of a Series of HKUST-like MOFs with Carbon Dioxide Capture and Separation

Hongming He,Fuxing Sun,Shengqian Ma,Guangshan Zhu

We reported a series of HKUST-like MOFs based on multiple copper-containing secondary building units (SBUs). Compound 1 is constructed by two SBUs: Cu2(CO2)4 paddle-wheel SBUs and Cu2I2 dimer SBUs. Compound 2 has Cu2(CO2)4 paddle-wheel SBUs and Cu4I4 SBUs. Furthermore, compound 3 possesses Cu2(CO2)4 paddle-wheel SBUs, Cu2I2 dimer SBUs, and Cu(CO2)4 SBUs. These compounds are promising materials for CO2 capture and separation, because they all display commendable adsorption of CO2 and high selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N2. It is worthy to note that compound 1 exhibits the highest Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (ca. 901 m2 g–1) among the MOF materials based on CuxIy SBUs. In addition, compound 3 is the first case that three copper SBUs coexist in MOFs.

Zr-Based MOFs Shielded with Phospholipid Bilayers: Improved Biostability and Cell Uptake for Biological Applications

Jian Yang,Xiaojing Chen,Yongsheng Li,Qixin Zhuang,Peifeng Liu,Jinlou Gu

For practical biomedical applications, the stabilization of nanoscale metal–organic frameworks (NMOFs) in the presence of phosphate is of prime importance but remains a significant challenge because of the inevitable and strong driving force between metal clusters and phosphate species to form metal-phosphate in physiological environments. Through shielding Zr-NMOFs within the continuous phospholipid bilayers (PBLs), herein, we figured out a unique way to protect the vulnerable coordination bonds in their frameworks from the attack of phosphate. To exemplify the facility of constructing PBLs on Zr-NMOFs core, a porphyrinic NMOF of PCN-223 (standing for a platform with broad biological applications) was elaborated using a triethylamine (TEA)-modulated strategy. TEA could not only control the phase transformation of porphyrinic MOFs to achieve pure-phase PCN-223 crystals but also minimize their particles size down to sub-200 nm. Negative-stained TEM, FT-IR and XPS techniques revealed that PBLs could be closely coated onto the surface of nanoPCN-223, thanks to the strong Zr–O–P chemical complexation between Zr-NMOFs and phospholipid. The resultant coated nanoPCN-223 exhibited significantly enhanced phosphatic-resistance in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and presented exceptional stability in harsh chemical environments. Furthermore, the MOFs-supported PBLs could effectively provide a stable biocompatible interface for subsequent cell culture and improve their biocompatibility, cellular uptake efficiency and real biostability of NMOFs in cellular environments. This study offers an alternative system for forming stable PBLs supported on NMOFs, and represents the first example of stabilizing Zr-NMOFs free from the attack of phosphate species in biological media.

Enhancing energy storage and catalytic properties of bimetallic multifunctional MOFs by designing secondary-building units

Jing Sun,Senyang Song,Chuyan Deng,Qianqian Wang,Xiaoyan Ma

With the development of wearable diagnostic devices, integrated bifunctional electrode materials with both electrochemical energy storage and glucose catalytic properties have attracted great attention. In order to obtain better electrochemical energy storage and glucose catalytic properties, in this paper, we reported a strategy to artificially intervene in the formation of extensible coordination structural units from metals and ligands (secondary-building units (SBUs)), in which the ligand of the monometallic MOFs was extended with Schiff base reaction to obtain new coordination sites and to form ultimate bimetallic MOFs with different SBUs by changing the metal feeding order. It is found that Ni-Co PyMOF, coordinated by Ni as a second metal with carboxyl-modified Co PyMOF, has the best electrochemical energy storage and catalytic properties due to its different SBUs with Co-Ni PyMOF and Ni/Co PyMOF. Ni-Co PyMOF exhibits a specific capacitance of 1471 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 and the asymmetric button-type supercapacitors with Ni-Co PyMOF exhibits the energy density of 37.43 W h kg −1 with a power density of 850 W kg −1 and the capacitance retention of 94 % after 5000 cycles. Besides, in the glucose catalytic properties test, Ni-Co PyMOF has a better properties with sensitivity of 387.63 μA cm −2  mM −1 in the linear range of 1.57 μM–3.50 mM. The experimental comparison reveals that Ni-Co PyMOF has higher energy storage capacity and glucose catalytic ability, which is a bifunctional MOF with promising applications.

Cu-based composite materials derived from MOFs for visible light PMS activation in tetracycline removal

Xinrui Han,Geng Li,Weiyan Su,Xusheng Xu,Mengjiao Yu,Guangyu Wu,Weinan Xing

The degradation of recalcitrant antibiotics through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an important branch of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), with widespread attention given to the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in this field. The article successfully synthesized Cu x O/N-doped carbon/Cu-MOF (Cu x O/NC/Cu-MOF) nanocomposites by low-temperature thermal treatment of Cu-MOF precursors. Compared with the original MOF, these partially decomposed composite materials exhibit significantly stronger catalytic activity towards PMS, efficiently removing organic pollutants such as tetracycline (TC). After optimization, the sample treated at 400 °C, under visible light with PMS assistance, achieves an impressive degradation rate, almost completely degrading a 50 mL TC solution (10 mg/L) after 80 min. This achievement surpasses the degradation rate observed with the original Cu-MOF by 2.1 times. In the composite system of Cu x O/NC/Cu-MOF+PMS+Vis, the significant enhancement of activity is credited to the effective spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, as well as the utilization of 1 O 2 as the primary active oxygen species. This work provides a simple preparation strategy for the development of Cu-based PMS activators with excellent photocatalytic performance.

Densely Stacked CoCu-MOFs Coated with CuAl/LDH Enhance Sulfamethoxazole Degradation in PMS-Activated Systems

Xin Zhong,Xiaojun Liu,Meihuan Ji,Fubin Jiang

As the most promising techniques for refractory antibiotic degradation in wastewater management, sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have attracted considerable attention. However, systematic studies on potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by MOF-derived metal oxides coated with LDH materials are still lacking. In this work, a series of catalysts consisting of CoCu-MOFs coated with CuAl/LDH were synthesized for PMS activation in the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). As expected, CoCu-MOFs coated with CuAl/LDH catalyst showed high SMX removal and stability in PMS activation. In the CoCu/LDH/PMS reaction, the SMX removal was nearly 100% after 60 min, and the mineralization reached 53.7%. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic stability and low metal leaching concentrations (Co: 0.013 mg/L, Cu: 0.313 mg/L), as detected by ICP. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the dominant reactive species in the CoCu/LDH/PMS system. Moreover, the presence of 1 O 2 in the process revealed the coupling of non-radical and radical processes. The XPS results showed that the layered structure of CoCu/LDH promoted the recycling of metal ions (high and low valence), which facilitated heterogeneous PMS activation. The effects of different reaction conditions and reuse cycles were also determined. The SMX oxidation pathways were proposed based on the intermediates identified by LC/MS. The high activity and stability of CoCu/LDH provide a new mechanistic understanding of PMS activation catalysts and their potential utilization in practical wastewater treatment.

Glucose sensing performance of bimetallic MOFs CoFe-ZIF/CC for enzyme-free saliva sensor applications

Jingjing Liu,Liuwei Shi,Yu Shi,Qi Zeng,Yajie Yang

Co-ZIF is widely believed as a promising material which shows potential in MOFs based enzyme-free sensors. However, the research of Co-ZIF in glucose sensor filed has been hampered, due to its poor electronic conductivity and slow ion diffusion caused by closed rhombohedral dodecahedron structure. In this work, the obtained Co 0.95 Fe 0.05 -ZIF presents highly opened nanosheet structure on CC, resulting in rich open active sites and ions moving channels. Compared with other reported ZIFs, the Co 0.95 Fe 0.05 -ZIF/CC exhibits excellent sensing performance with a high sensitivity of 3232.30 μA mM −1 cm −2 in the range of 0.20–1.00 mM and a low detection limit of less than 5 μM, due to its highly opened nanosheet structure. The Co 0.95 Fe 0.05 -ZIF/CC also shows excellent selectivity, repeatability and reproducibility for glucose detection. Furthermore, the variation trend of test results measured by this saliva sensor without any sample pre-treatment, is consistent with that of commercial blood glucose meter, indicating its potential in real applications. This synthesis strategy also provides a new direction of structure construction for high performance MOFs in enzyme-free glucose sensor field.

Facile fabrication of novel magnetic MOFs for highly efficient adsorption and determination of organophosphorus pesticides

Li Wang,Kang Wei,Yi Pan,Yang Wei,Zhengwu Wang,Lurong Xu,Yuanfeng Wang,Xinlin Wei

The hazardous effects of residues from organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) on human health have prompted researchers to look for innovative adsorbents and detecting techniques. Herein, a simple and economical material Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-224 was effectively produced as a desirable adsorbent for OPPs residues adsorption by integrating magnetic polydopamine (PDA) with the zirconium-based metal-organic framework (PCN-224). Modification of magnetic cores with PCN-224 allowed a dramatic increase in surface area and porosity to enhance pesticide adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption mechanisms inferred that π-π interactions, covalent bonds, and hydrogen bonds may promote the beneficial adsorption of OPPs by Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-224. Finally, the Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-224-based HPLC method exhibited with low detection limits (0.014–0.051 μg/L), good precision (1.70 % – 3.49 %), wide linearity (1–100 μg/L, R 2  ≥ 0.9936), satisfactory recoveries (86.16 % – 106.45 %), and high enrichment factors (92–101), demonstrating its significant potential for efficient extraction, enrichment, and analysis of OPPs in complex matrix samples.

Lignin-incorporated Co-MOFs-derived catalysts for selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols into cyclohexanols

Xue Wu,Hui Li,Wenlin Xu,Ge Fei,Minghao Zhou,Xin Zhao

Lignin accounted for the second largest amount in biomass, and was regarded as an important carbon source and important renewable source for value-added chemicals. Herein, a series of lignin-derived carbon-based heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method , using Co-MOFs as template. Lignin was introduced as a carbon material into MOF catalysts. Through some characterizations, it has been proven that lignin has been successfully introduced into MOF materials and significantly improved the catalyst performance. Then, lignin-MOF derived catalysts (Co/C-EL-X) were successfully introduced into the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols . The addition of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EL) in catalysts, calcination temperature and some other factors were investigated in detail, considering the catalytic performance during the HDO of vanillin and other typical lignin-derived phenols. Co/C-EL-0.5(500) exhibited the best catalytic performance for the conversion of different kinds of lignin-derived phenols to either 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) or cyclohexanol . Under the optimal conditions of 240 °C, 0 MPa N 2 , and 2 h, the conversion rate of vanillin reached 100 %, and the yield of 4-methyl-2-methoxyphenol (MMP) was up to 92 %. Furthermore, vanillin could also be converted into 4-methylcyclohexanol (MCYL) by changing the initial nitrogen pressure. Also, Co/C-EL-0.5 (500) exhibited high activity for the conversion of other lignin-derived phenols into cyclohexanol (COL). This work provided a novel strategy for the catalytic valorization of lignin sources.
