Tyrosine is the precursor of some neurotransmitters such as thyroxine and dopamine. It has the effect of regulating emotions and stimulating the nervous system. Changes in tyrosine levels in the human body are associated with certain diseases. Therefore, it is very necessary to prepare a new type of tyrosine sensor. In this work, an enzyme-free electrochemical sensor based on MXene/CNTs/CuMOF composite was developed for the detection of tyrosine. Embedding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into MXene effectively prevented the aggregation of MXene sheets. Further modification of MXene/CNTs materials with CuMOF octahedral particles with porous structure can improve the porosity and catalytic capability of the composites. Under the optimal detection conditions, the prepared sensor has good linearity in the detection of tyrosine within range 0.53 μM–232.46 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 μM. The stability and selectivity of the sensor is high, and can be used to detect tyrosine in human serum.

The demand for thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes with superior permeance and high rejection is gradually increasing for seawater desalination and brackish water softening. However, improving the membrane permeance remains a great challenge due to the formation of excrescent polyamide in the substrate pores and thick polyamide film. Herein, we fabricated a high-performance TFC nanofiltration membrane via a classical interfacial polymerization reaction on a two-dimensional lamellar layer of transition-metal carbides (MXene). The MXene layer promoted the absorption of the reactive monomer, and higher amine monomer concentration facilitated the self-sealing and self-termination of interfacial polymerization to generate a thinner outer polyamide film from 68 to 20 nm. The almost nonporous lamellar interface inhibited the formation of inner polyamide in the substrate pores. In addition, the MXene lamellar layer could be eliminated by mild oxidation after interfacial polymerization to avoid imparted additional hydraulic resistance. The resulting TFC membrane conferred a high rejection above 96% for Na2SO4 and excellent permeance of 45.7 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1, which was almost 4.5 times higher than that of the control membrane (10.2 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1). This research provides a feasible strategy for fabricating a high-performance nanofiltration membrane using two-dimensional nanosheets as a templated interface.

Nobel metal Pt composites show high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but limited in application by high Pt contents and therefore the cost. Herein, a series of Pt nanoparticle (NP)-deposited 2D Ti3C2Tx MXenes were prepared by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) method with relatively low Pt contents (0.98–3.10 wt %) and showed excellent HER catalytic activity and stability. The electrochemical results indicated that the prepared catalysts showed the optimal HER activity as the ALD deposition cycle reached 40, with an overpotential of 67.8 mV approaching that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (64.2 mV). The excellent behavior was attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of the Pt NPs and the good conductivity of the 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene supports.

Purpose MXenes are two-dimensional (2D) materials that are increasingly being applied in biomedical fields. This is ascribed to their good physiochemical properties, unique structure and high biological compatibility. However, the osteogenic activity and suitability of these materials for bone tissue engineering are not clearly understood. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the biocompatibility, osteoinductivity and guided bone regeneration ability of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in vitro and in vivo. Methods Multilayered Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films were prepared and characterized by XRD and SEM. In vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of MXene films on cell adhesion and morphology with SEM and fluorescence microscopy. The cytotoxicity of MXene films was detected with the Live/Dead double-staining tests. The EdU assay was employed to evaluate cell proliferation on MXene films and ALP activity was tested to determine the effect of the films on osteogenic differentiation in vitro. The mRNA expression of osteogenic differentiation-related markers was measured using qRT-PCR. In vivo animal studies were performed in which the MXene films were implanted subcutaneously in rats to evaluate biocompatibility and host tissue response in vivo. In addition, a rat calvarial defect model was established to examine the bone regeneration performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films. The specimens were analyzed with micro-CT evaluation and histological tests. Results The XRD and SEM analyses revealed that the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene film was successfully synthesized. The cellular experiments showed that MXene films were highly cytocompatible and enhanced osteogenic differentiation in vitro. When implanted into subcutaneous sites and calvarial defect sites in rats, MXene films showed good biocompatibility, osteoinductivity and bone regeneration activity in vivo. Conclusion In summary, this study presents new applications of MXenes in bone tissue engineering and in guided bone regeneration therapy.

Degradable wearable electronics offer a promising route to construct sustainable cities and reduced carbon society. However, the difficult functionalization and the poor stability of degradable sensitive materials dramatically restrict their application in personalized healthcare assessment. Herein, we developed a scalable, low-cost, and porosity degradable MXene-polylactic acid textile (DMPT) for on-body biomonitoring via electrospinning. A combination of polydimethylsiloxane templating and MXene flake impregnation methods endows the fabricated DMPT with a sensitivity of 5.37/kPa, a fast response time of 98 ms, and a good mechanical stability (over 6000 cycles). An efficient degradation of as-electrospun DMPTs was observed in 1 wt % sodium carbonate solution. It is found that the incorporation of MXene nanosheets boosts the hydrophilicity and degradation efficiency of active polylactic acid nanofibrous films in comparison with the pristine counterpart. Furthermore, the as-received DMPT demonstrates great capability in monitoring physiological activities of wrist pulse, knuckle bending, swallowing, and vocalization. This work opens up a new paradigm for developing and optimizing high-performance degradable on-body electronics.

Excessive bilirubin in human blood can cause irreversible damage to the patient’s brain and nervous system. Herein, chitin/MXene (Ch/MX) composite aerogel spheres were designed by supercritical CO2 technology to remove bilirubin safely, quickly, and efficiently. In this study, Ti3C2 with 4 nm thickness was uniformly dispersed in the chitin fibers as a monolayer nanofiller and tightly connected with the chitin fibers, which significantly improved the mechanical strength and adsorption capacity of the aerogel spheres. The Ch/MX aerogel spheres could withstand 25,000 times their own weight. Compared with chitin aerogel spheres, the equilibrium time for bilirubin adsorption by Ch/MX aerogel spheres was shortened by 33% and the adsorption capacity was increased by 40%. In addition, Ch/MX aerogel spheres still possess a high adsorption capacity of 142.86 mg/g in bilirubin solution with BSA protein up to 80 mg/mL. Compared with commercial products used clinically, Ch/MX has the advantages of high adsorption capacity and high interference resistance. Compared with our previous chitinous/graphene aerogel spheres, Ch/MX has the advantages of low dosage of functional materials, high bilirubin adsorption rate, and good biocompatibility. This study demonstrates the advantages of MXene as a nanofiller for adsorbing bilirubin and promotes the development and application of inorganic 2D nanomaterials in the clinical treatment of hyperbilirubinemia.

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) porous structures is an effective method to improve microwave absorbing performance due to the multiple reflections. However, in traditional 3D porous structures, multiple reflections only occur within the pores. Promoting multiple reflections beyond the pores should further improve the absorbing performance. Herein, a 3D porous composite foam with sandwiched cell walls was developed to boost multiple reflections in both the submillimeter-scale pores and the submicron-scale cell walls, achieving multiscale microwave absorption. Polydopamine (PDA)-modified polyimide foam (PIF) was used as the 3D porous skeleton. The cell walls of the PDA@PIF were sandwiched by Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. The resulting Ti 3 C 2 T x @PDA@PIF can absorb over 90% of the incident microwave over the whole X band, which is contributed by multiscale multiple reflections, conduction loss, and interfacial polarization. Meanwhile, the composite foam exhibits excellent flexibility and a low density of ∼30 mg cm −3 . This work offers a realistic approach for lightweight, flexible, and broadband microwave absorbers, enriching the structures for effective electromagnetic protection.

MXene has been the subject of various studies and applications in polymer composites in recent years. However, its compatibility with hydrophobic polymers has been a significant limitation. This study presents a simple way to create MXene frameworks to realise flame retardant hydrophobic polymer composites. The fabrication process is environmentally friendly and low-cost. The PVB/HPUPO/MXene composite membrane showed a 74.7% reduction in volatile intensity during thermal degradation compared to pristine PVB. The PVB/HPUPO/MXene composite membrane also demonstrated significantly improved flame retardancy compared to pure PVB. Specifically, MXene based networks and HPUPO showed synergistic effect in improving the fire safety of PVB composites. This study offers a new approach to incorporating MXene as a flame retardant into conventional phosphorus- and nitrogen-based flame retardant systems for hydrophobic polymers with great fire retardancy.

Noble metal nanozymes hold promise in cancer therapy due to adjustable enzyme-like activities, unique physicochemical properties, etc. But catalytic activities of monometallic nanozyme are confined. In this study, 2D titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x )-supported RhRu alloy nanoclusters (RhRu/Ti 3 C 2 T x ) are prepared by a hydrothermal method and utilized for synergistic therapy of chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT) on osteosarcoma. The nanoclusters are small in size (3.6 nm), uniform in distribution, and have excellent catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD)-like activities. Density functional theory calculations show that there is a significant electron transfer interaction between RhRu and Ti 3 C 2 T x , which has strong adsorption to H 2 O 2 and is beneficial to enhance the enzyme-like activity. Furthermore, RhRu/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanozyme acts as both PTT agent for converting light into heat, and photosensitizer for catalyzing O 2 to 1 O 2 . With the NIR-reinforced POD- and CAT-like activity, excellent photothermal and photodynamic performance, the synergistic CDT/PDT/PTT effect of RhRu/Ti 3 C 2 T x on osteosarcoma is verified by in vitro and in vivo experiments. This study is expected to provide a new research direction for the treatment of osteosarcoma and other tumors.

MXenes have received lots of attention since discovered and have been applied in various fields. In this work, Ti3C2–Fe3O4 composites with exposed non-modified Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets were designed and prepared by an in situ growth strategy and then applied in the enrichment of phosphopeptides. The two-dimensional composites could interact with the phosphopeptides through a metal oxide affinity chromatography mechanism provided by Ti–O and Fe–O bonds and a hydrophilic interaction chromatography mechanism by surface hydroxyl groups. This magnetic nanomaterial with a specific surface area of 66.1 m2·g–1 had high sensitivity to phosphopeptides (0.5 nmol·L–1) and high selectivity (1:1000 of the molar ratio of β-casein to bovine serum albumin). Non-fat milk was adopted as a real sample to preliminarily examine the applicability of the Ti3C2–Fe3O4-based protocol. Subsequently, Qingkailing injection, a kind of traditional Chinese medicine injection, was introduced to further explore the suitability of the nanocomposites for phosphopeptide enrichment from more complex matrices and satisfactory results were obtained.

In this study, imidazolium brushes tethered by –NH2-containing ligands were grafted onto the surface of a 2D material, MXene, using precipitation polymerization followed by quaternization. Functionalized MXene was embedded into chitosan matrix to prepare a hybrid alkaline anion exchange membrane. Due to high interfacial compatibility, functionalized MXene was homogeneously dispersed in chitosan matrix, generating continuous ion conduction channels and then greatly enhancing OH−conduction property (up to 172%). The ability and mechanism of OH−conduction in the membrane were elaborated based on systematic tests. The mechanical-thermal stability and swelling resistance of the membrane were evidently augmented. Therefore, it is a promising anion exchange membrane for alkaline fuel cell application. Keywords:functionalized MXene;chitosan;anion exchange membrane;hydroxide conductivity;alkaline fuel cell
