Organic–Inorganic Modification of PVDF Membranes by PDA@ZnO and PDA@MgO Nanoparticles for Enhanced Performance of Organic Dye Wastewater Treatment

Yiming Wu,Jing Yang,Ruifeng Zhang,Hongji Li,Ruihua Mu,Yamei Zhao

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes represent a potential technology for the in-depth treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater. Nevertheless, the intractable membrane fouling and the limited versatility have significantly constrained its applications. Herein, through the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion method, we have successfully fabricated the PDA@MgO/PVDF and PDA@ZnO/PVDF membranes, which are modified by the synergistic action of MgO or ZnO nanoparticles with polydopamine (PDA), respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as the analyses of pore structure, contact angle, and surface free energy, were utilized to characterize the hybrid membranes. The results demonstrate that the modification of PDA@MgO and PDA@ZnO can enhance the hydrophilicity, pure flux, dye rejection, and pollution resistance of PVDF membranes. The enhanced hydrophilicity of the modified membranes results from the increase in surface free energy and its polar component term. Comparatively, the PDA@ZnO/PVDF membrane exhibits a smaller contact angle (69°) and a higher pure water flux (378.63 L/m2·h·bar), whereas the PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane possesses greater mechanical strength and better antifouling performance. The PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane can achieve a rejection rate of 94.6% for disperse deep blue 79, and the flux recovery rate can reach approximately 82%. This research offers novel insights into the application of PVDF membranes for the treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater.

Biodegradable bilayer active packaging with unidirectional release: PLA/ZnO/MgO outer layer and gelatin electrospun mat incorporating eugenol-thymol for cucumber preservation

Yunge Zhang,Mi Li,Yuanchang Cao,Jian Ju,Qingmin Chen,Yanli Ma,Cuicui Li

Novel biodegradable bilayer film with unidirectional release. • PLA/ZnO/MgO outer layer improves barrier and UV-blocking. • Inner gelatin/EUG-THY layer ensures long-term antimicrobial activity. Fresh cucumbers are highly perishable due to moisture loss, microbial infection, and oxidative deterioration. In this study, a biodegradable bilayer active packaging film with unidirectional release was developed for cucumber preservation. The outer PLA layer was reinforced with 2 wt% of a 1:1 ZnO/MgO nanoparticle mixture, exhibiting enhanced hydrophobicity, mechanical strength (tensile strength 62.75 MPa), reduced water vapor permeability (88.7 g/m 2 ·24 h), and excellent UV-blocking. The inner layer was prepared by electrospinning gelatin loaded with 0.2–0.4 wt% eugenol (EUG) and thymol (THY). Unidirectional release evaluation showed that >92% of EUG and THY were released toward the food simulant via a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism ( n  = 0.54–0.57). The films exhibited concentration-dependent antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. During 21 days of storage at 4 °C, cucumbers packaged with the EUG/THY-loaded bilayer films showed significantly lower weight loss, reduced color deterioration, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. The 0.4% EUG/THY formulation extended cucumber shelf life to 18–20 days. This bilayer design offers a promising strategy for eco-friendly active packaging with unidirectional release for fresh produce preservation. Phase Equilibria Studies in the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 System with Al2O3/SiO2 Ratio of 0.5 Related to High-Al2O3 BF Slags

Xiao Yang,Zhou Huarui,Wei Junyu,Tang Zhaoyi,Qian Kun,Wang Ning,Zhao Baojun,Liao Jinfa

With the increasing use of high-alumina iron ores in blast furnace ironmaking, the Al 2 O 3 content in the slags has gradually risen to 15 to 20 wt pct, significantly affecting the phase equilibria and flow properties of the slag system. In this study, the phase equilibria in the CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 quaternary system with a fixed Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 mass ratio of 0.5 (representative of typical high-Al 2 O 3 blast furnace slags) were systematically investigated using high-temperature equilibration and quenching experiments combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). A pseudo-ternary phase diagram CaO–MgO–(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) was constructed. At a fixed (SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) content of 55 wt pct, the minimum liquidus temperatures for slags with Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2  = 0.5 occur at MgO/CaO ≈ 0.4 (1360 °C), respectively, and the liquidus temperature of the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2  = 0.4 slag is consistently lower than that of the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2  = 0.5 slag over the entire MgO/CaO range studied. At fixed MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.2 and 0.15, the liquidus temperature first decreases and then increases with increasing quaternary basicity (defined as (CaO+MgO)/(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) by mass). In the conventional basicity range of blast furnace slag (0.95 to 1.05), the liquidus temperature ranges from 1400 °C to 1500 °C, and the high-alumina slag always exhibits a higher liquidus temperature than the ordinary slag. Significant deviations exceeding 50 °C were observed between the experimental liquidus temperatures and the phase equilibria calculated using the FactSage 8.4 thermodynamic database for high‑alumina blast furnace slags. The compositional characteristics of the melilite solid solution were also analyzed using EPMA‑derived compositional data. Strong linear correlations among Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and MgO in melilite confirm the isomorphous substitution mechanism. When the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in the liquid phase is below 0.5, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in melilite increases sharply with increasing liquid ratio; when the liquid ratio exceeds 0.5, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio in melilite stabilizes within a narrow range of 1.4 to 1.6, indicating that the incorporation of Al 3 ⁺ in the melilite structure approaches an apparent solubility limit.

Catalytic conditioning and mechanism of sludge with a green conditioner MgO(110): The first example of boosting sludge conditioning by facet engineering

Yue Hu,Yangyi Yu,Jingxiang Sun,Wen Yan,Hanya Xie,Ya Xiong,Shuanghong Tian,Jinxi Feng

With an intention to find new green-effective catalytic conditioners of sludge treatment, MgO nano-powders with preferential exposure facet (110) or (100) were prepared as sludge conditioners of sludge for the first time. The synthesized MgO nano-powders significantly enhanced the dewaterability and filterability of sludge which were highly sensitive to facet exposure. The Disintegration degree (DD) of sludge treated with MgO(110) reached 41.6 %, while that with MgO(100) and commercial MgO was only 35.7 % and 27.7 %, respectively. Boosting catalytic conditioning effect of (110) facet exposure was mainly ascribed to strong adsorption of O 2 in the Pauling-type mode by low coordination sites. Theoretical calculation indicated that its adsorption energy of O 2 reached was 4.5 folds that of MgO(100). The adsorption mode and high energy facilitated the generation of 1 O 2 as a key initial reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to the effective conversion of bound water into free water. These findings provided a methodological reference for developing alternative catalytic conditioners through facet engineering to promote sludge dewatering and reduction.

Mechanism of condensed-phosphate recovery based on an electrocatalytic coupling adsorption system using metal–organic framework–derived Mg/O dual-vacancy MgO

Tian Yuan,Shiyu Lv,Xueyan Zhang,Weilin Fu,Pu Yang,Kerong Fu,Qiuxian Zhang,Xia Yao,Yanli Luo,Feng Wang

Phosphate ore reserves are insufficient for sustained human use, and the resource recovery of condensed phosphates in water bodies remains challenging. Herein, nanomagnesia (AA-MgO) with coexisting magnesium and oxygen vacancies was synthesized via the sacrificial template method using metal–organic frameworks. AA-MgO achieved efficient condensed-phosphate catalysis and simultaneous orthophosphate recovery in an electrocatalytic coupling adsorption system. Its unique dual-vacancy structure considerably enhanced its electrocatalytic performance. Under optimal conditions, AA-MgO showed adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and pyrophosphate (P ∼ P) removal rates of 98.75% and 98.20%, respectively, exhibiting 2.06–13.23 times better pseudo-first-order kinetics than commercially available MgO. After being regenerated thrice, AA-MgO maintained a > 70% removal rate, demonstrating excellent structural stability. Quenching and radical-trapping experiments confirmed that the catalytic process involved radical and nonradical pathways, with ·OH playing a dominant role in catalyzing ATP, while the nonradical pathway involving 1 O₂ contributed more significantly to P ∼ P degradation. Density functional theory calculations showed that the ATP adsorption energy was higher on the V Mg  + V o surface than on the V o surface. Moreover, the energy barrier of the rate-determining step in P ∼ P degradation was lower on the former, indicating that this surface favored condensed-phosphate degradation. Finally, differential charge and electrochemical characterization revealed that AA-MgO exhibited superior electron transfer rates than MgO.

Effect of β to α phase transformation on microstructure and thermal conductivity of SiC ceramic densified with Y2O3-MgO additives in argon

Binwei Huang,Pingzhan Si,Quanxing Ren,Zhuang Qian,Ziqiang Yin,Zhengren Huang,Qing Huang,Yinsheng Li

SiC ceramic was fabricated by spark plasma sintering of β-SiC powder and Y 2 O 3 -MgO additives in argon. The effects of β→α phase transformation of SiC on microstructure and thermal conductivity of densified bulks were systematically investigated, in comparison to the counterparts using α-SiC as starting powder. The β→α phase transformation led to a “unimodal to bimodal” transition in grain size distribution. After sintering at 1850 o C, the incomplete β→α phase transformation induced the appearance of β/α heterophase boundary with strong effect of phonon-scattering. After sintering at 2050  o C, the completion of β→α phase transformation resulted in enlarged grains and disappearance of β/α heterophase boundary in SiC ceramic. The lattice oxygen content was decreased primarily by enhanced grain growth and oxygen picking-up of sintering additives, and possibly some contribution from β→α phase transformation. The optimized microstructure enabled SiC ceramic to obtain a remarkable increase in thermal conductivity from 126 to 204 W/mK after the replacement of α-SiC by β-SiC as starting powder and the accomplishment of β→α phase transformation.

He2+ irradiation response of structural evolution at different depths of MgO-Nd2(Zr1-xCex)2O7 composite ceramics used for inert matrix fuel

Yijie Tang,Jin Wang,Junxia Wang,Long Kang,Tongming Zhang,Jun Li,Yan Wang,Xusheng Li

This paper reported the irradiation response of a 55 wt.% MgO-45 wt.% Nd 2 (Zr 1- x Ce x ) 2 O 7 (abbreviated to M-NZC x , x  = 0, 0.3 and 1) composite ceramics used as candidate inert matrix fuel under 500 keV He 2+ ions with fluence of 1 × 10 16 –5 × 10 17 ions/cm 2 . The irradiation-induced lattice expansion, amorphization of MgO and NZC x phases and order-disorder transition of Nd 2 (Zr 1- x Ce x ) 2 O 7 pyrochlore were systemically explored via GIXRD, Raman and TEM techniques. And the detailed irradiation response at different depths of the typical M-NZC 0.3 sample was especially investigated via GIXRD and TEM. The results showed that the lattice expansion ratios ( Rs ) of MgO (M), ordered pyrochlore (P) and disordered defect-fluorite (F) structures of NZC x pyrochlore in the samples under the same dose of He 2+ irradiation were regular, which were ranged as the following order: Rs M  <  Rs P  <  Rs F . And there was a belt-shaped damage aggregation zone located near interphase boundary at the maximum damage depth of M-NZC 0.3 sample, which could be explained by the defect-absorption of boundary. And this defect-absorption of boundary was also found at any depth of M-NZC 0.3 sample. This work systematically analyzed α-decay irradiation response of different phases in M-NZC x composite ceramics applying for inert matrix fuel.

Low-temperature joining of SiC ceramics by NITE phase using CaO-Al2O3-MgO-SiO2 glass as an additive combined with surface oxidation

Sheng-Jin He,Ling-Feng Su,Chuang-Tian Zhan,Xiu-Bin Chen,Wei-Ming Guo,Shi-Kuan Sun,Li-Xiang Wu,Jia-Xiang Xue,Hua-Tay Lin

Low-temperature joining of SiC ceramics using raw CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 mixed powders (CAMS-P) and CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 glass (CAMS-G) as additives for the liquid-phase sintering of SiC nanopowders (NITE phase) in combination with surface oxidation was studied. Using CAMS-P as an additive for SiC joining required 1650 °C and produced a lower shear strength of 77.2 ± 3.5 MPa, compared to untreated SiC (108.2 ± 15.8 MPa). Using CAMS-G as an additive, the compactness of SiC joints obtained at 1550 °C was higher than that of NITE joints obtained at 1650 °C with CAMS-P as an additive. Nonetheless, the low joining temperature resulted in gaps and delaminations at the interface, and the joints strength was only 48.3 ± 5.6 MPa. Incorporating CAMS-G as an additive and surface oxidation achieved reliable NITE phase joining at 1550 °C, with no observed gaps or delaminations at the interface. The resulting joints strength was as high as 100.0 ± 0.8 MPa. The joining mechanism was discussed and compared, involving microstructural analysis .

Fabrication of porous TiZrNbTa high-entropy alloys/Ti composite with high strength and low Young's modulus using a novel MgO space holder

Tao Xiang,Jie Chen,Weizong Bao,Shuyan Zhong,Peng Du,Guoqiang Xie

Stress shielding is caused by the mismatch of stiffness between bone and implant materials, which may give rise to bone resorption and loosening, thereby causing implantation failure. There is a huge gap between Young's modulus of human bone and low Young's modulus β Ti alloys. A porous structure design can achieve the target of low Young's modulus, and thus achieve the matching between human bone and implant materials. However, a suitable space holder (SH) that can be applied at high temperatures and sintering pressure has not been reported. In this study, the TiZrNbTa/Ti titanium matrix composite (TMC) with high strength and large ductility was used as scaffold materials and combined the SH technique with the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique to obtain a porous structure. A novel space holder, i.e., MgO particles was adopted, which can withstand high-temperature sintering accompanied by a sintering pressure. The porous TiZrNbTa/Ti with 40 vol.% MgO added exhibits a maximum strength of 345.9 ± 10.4 MPa and Young's modulus of 24.72 ± 0.20 GPa, respectively. It possesses higher strength compared with human bone and matches Young's modulus of human bone, which exhibits great potential for clinical application.

Preparation and characterization of carboxymethyl chitosan/nano-MgO/red cabbage anthocyanins multifunctional films via colloid formation and its application on shrimp preservation

Qiang Xie,Dan Luo,Kaiyu Mu,Wentong Xue

The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)-based nanocomposite films incorporated with nano-MgO and red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA). The MgO content of 0.2% (w/v) resulted in a colloidal film-forming solution with a 60 nm-level diameter. The tensile strength of the consequent film was improved from 7.83 to 25.04 MPa with the film thickness increasing from 63.50 to 85.73 µm, whereas elongation at break decreased from 35.8% to 12.50%. Without affecting the optical transmittance, the incorporation of MgO and RCA significantly enhanced the UV-shielding ability and thermal stability of the CMCS/MgO/RCA films, and significantly decreased their water vapor permeability and water solubility. The SEM result showed that nano-MgO were homogeneously distributed in the CMCS matrix, and the nanocomposite films exhibited improved hydrophobicity with the water contact angle increasing from 45.1° to 76.7°. ATR-FTIR and XRD analyses revealed the molecular interactions in films, including hydrogen bonds , electrostatic attraction, and hydrophobic interaction. Compared to the control, the CMCS/MgO/RCA films exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity and potent antibacterial ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zone diameter increasing by 67.8% and 50.9%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of RCA made the film color change from red to green within pH 3–12. The obtained films showed great potential in shrimp preservation by suppressing the rise of pH and generation of the total volatile basic nitrogen.

Quantitatively ion-exchange between Mg(II) and Pb(II)/Cd(II) during the highly efficient adsorption by MgO-loaded lotus stem biochar

Yaru Li,Yanyan Liu,Caiying Liu,Li Feng,Shuao Yang,Yuxue Shan,Fei Xiao

Background Toxic metals such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) have thrown great threat to human health. Adsorption has been drawn more attention due to its low-cost, easy process and extensive raw materials. However, high efficient and environmental-friendly adsorbents are still in great need. Furthermore, the quantitatively adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) and Cd(II) remain unclear. MgO-loaded lotus stem biochar was proposed as a highly efficient adsorbent to removal aqueous Pb(II) and Cd(II). Methods MgO-loaded biochar was prepared by using lotus stalk as a precursor to be pyrolyzed with MgCl 2 impregnation. Adsorption isotherms , kinetics, thermodynamics experiments were carried out. SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, etc. were employed to characterize the adsorbent before and after adsorption. Significant findings The adsorption capacities of MgO-loaded biochar for Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 1379.54 mg/g and 404.04 mg/g, respectively, which were 5 and 20 times higher than that of the original biochar. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics indicated that the adsorption process was a chemisorption-based heat absorption reaction, and the characterization results showed the main adsorption mechanisms were ascribed to ion-exchange, precipitation, surface complexation between biochar and Pb(II)/Cd(II) ions, in which the ion exchange mechanism was quantitatively confirmed. Finally, MgO-loaded biochar has been proved to be an efficient adsorbent.

Nano artificial periosteum PLGA/MgO/Quercetin accelerates repair of bone defects through promoting osteogenic − angiogenic coupling effect via Wnt/ β-catenin pathway

Xi He,Wenbin Liu,Yanling Liu,Kai Zhang,Yan Sun,Pengfei Lei,Yihe Hu

Bone nonunion or delayed union, caused by stripping or injuring of periosteum, is the most common sequelae of segmental bone defects. The preservation of periosteum, or the use of periosteal grafts, can significantly improve the integration of bone graft, speeding up the process of bone reconstruction. However, in most cases, periosteum cannot be preserved with bioactivity. Thus, it is pivotal to develop artificial periosteum. In this study, artificial periosteum of PLGA/MgO/Quercetin was prepared by electrospinning. PLGA/MgO/Quercetin membranes were shown to have a highly porous surface and microstructure, as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Along with excellent biocompatibility, PLGA/MgO/Quercetin membranes promoted cell proliferation and migration, as well as osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs (Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells) in a dose-dependent manner through the activation of Wnt/β-Catenin pathway. The PLGA/MgO/Quercetin membranes, with an appropriate concentration of quercetin (<1 wt%), promoted EPCs (Endothelial progenitor cells) angiogenesis. In a subcutaneous implantation model and rat skull defect model, optimal osteogenesis and angiogenesis function were observed for the PLGA/20 wt% MgO/0.1 wt% Quercetin membrane. In conclusion, PLGA/MgO membranes, with an appropriate concentration of quercetin, show a variety of biological activities and are promising materials for the generation of artificial periosteum.
