Phosphidated Ni-Mn layered double hydroxide–based electrode material with superior electrochemical performance for supercapacitors

Ying Wang,Cuili Xiang,Zuoan Xiao,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun,Jian Zhang,Yongjin Zou

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in alkali solutions. However, their low conductivity and poor cycle stability limit their application. In this work, Ni-Mn LDH was grown on activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs) and then phosphidated to obtain an electrode material with a three-dimensional core–shell structure (ACNFs@Ni-Mn-P). This composite combines the electrochemical activity of the two-dimensional phosphidated nanosheets with the structural stability of the one-dimensional nanofibers. The resulting ACNFs@Ni-Mn-P electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 1077 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , which is 4.9 times higher than that of a non-phosphidated ACNFs@Ni-Mn LDH electrode, and retains stability of 88.53% at a high current density of 10 A g −1 even after 5000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetrical supercapacitor featuring an ACNFs@Ni-Mn-P positive electrode achieves comparatively prominent specific energy of 56.25 Wh kg −1 at 806.13 W kg −1 , respectively. Therefore, ACNFs@Ni-Mn-P as electrode material has great potential for application in supercapacitors.

Dynamic La Leaching Activates Oxygen-Ligand Holes to Stabilize Mn Oxides for Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Rendian Wan,Bing Li,Tenghui Yuan,Chaoxia Peng,Liuchen Wang,Bolin Xia,Peirong Chen,Ali Abdelhafiz,Xunhui Xiong,Enzuo Liu,Bote Zhao

Mn oxides are attractive earth-abundant catalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their durability is constrained by Mn overoxidation under high anodic potential. Here we demonstrate that dynamic La leaching can be harnessed to activate an oxygen-ligand-hole environment in Mn-based oxide (La 0.1 Mn 0.9 O x ), which suppresses Mn overoxidation. Ultraviolet-visible spectra of the electrolyte indicate that incorporating La into γ-MnO 2 shifts the onset potential for Mn VII O 4 − dissolution to a higher value. Operando spectroscopy reveals that La 0.1 Mn 0.9 O x exhibits a much more stable local MnO 6 framework than γ-MnO 2 under OER conditions. Theoretical analysis indicates that, upon Mn-site oxidation, La-leaching-induced metal vacancies amplify oxygen-ligand holes within distorted La─O─Mn motifs, enabling O-to-Mn charge compensation that suppresses Mn overoxidation. The electronic reconfiguration also modulates the Mn d -band center to optimize intermediate adsorption. La 0.1 Mn 0.9 O x delivers an overpotential 66 mV lower than that of γ-MnO 2 at 10 mA cm −2 geo , and sustains stable operation for 5000 h at 10 mA cm −2 geo and 1400 h at 100 mA cm −2 geo . This work highlights leaching-coupled oxygen-electronic regulation as an effective strategy for designing highly stable and active earth-abundant catalysts in acidic OER.

Synergistic Interfacial Charge Storage and Transfer Mechanisms for Extra Capacity in Mn-Based Oxide Anodes

Rongci Wang,Yifu Guo,Leqing Zhang,Fei Wang,Zihao Miao,Xiaoshan Wang,Qiang Li

Manganese-based transition metal oxides have attracted significant interest as promising lithium-ion battery anodes due to their extra capacity beyond theoretical limits. However, the intrinsic origin of extra capacity has remained controversial, particularly the interface electron-transfer mechanisms that have long eluded direct experimental verification owing to the difficulty of electrochemical interface characterization. In this work, we employ advanced operando magnetometry to dynamically analyse spin-dependent electronic behavior in Mn 3 O 4 anode during electrochemical cycling. Our findings identify two synergistic interfacial energy-storage modes underlying the extra capacity, in addition to solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, reversible space-charge storage at the Mn/Li 2 O interface coupled with charge exchange at the Mn/SEI interface. Specifically, electrons first populate spin-split states in metallic Mn at the Mn/Li 2 O interface. With further accumulation, charge transfers across the Mn/SEI interface into the SEI, facilitating SEI growth and contributing to the extra capacity. This study provides the direct magnetic evidence of a multiple-interface cooperative storage mechanism in Mn-based materials, offering a new physical perspective and design strategy for developing high-capacity anode materials through the lens of interfacial electronic structures and spin regulation. Graphical Using operando magnetometry, this work unravels the five-stage electron transfer of Mn 3 O 4 upon Li + insertion/extraction. Interfacial space-charge storage dominates its extra capacity, offering guidance for rational design of Mn-based electrode materials.

Alkaline-Earth-Site Confinement Enables 98% Quantum Yield Orange Emission in Mn-Doped Cadmium Halide

Dan Luo,Tao Huang,Shuaigang Ge,Yongqiang Zhao,Bingsuo Zou

The luminescence efficiency of Mn2+-doped metal halides is often limited by concentration quenching caused by Mn-Mn interactions. In this work, the alkaline-earth cadmium chloride BaCd2Cl6·6H2O:Mn2+was synthesized via a mechanical grinding method. The three-dimensional network framework of this compound effectively isolates Mn2+ions with a Mn-Mn separation of 4.87 Å, thereby suppressing concentration quenching. Under 254 nm ultraviolet excitation, the sample exhibits efficient orange emission centered at 588 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 98%. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal that the optimal emission temperature of this system is 320 K, demonstrating good thermal stability. This work achieves, for the first time, near-unity Mn2+luminescence efficiency in a Ba-site alkaline-earth cadmium halide system, demonstrating that alkaline-earth-site confinement provides an effective strategy for achieving highly efficient Mn-doped halide luminescence.

Effect of hydrogen bonding on the humification of humic precursors with Fe-Mn concomitant minerals

Zhiwei Zhang,Xiang Li,Chenghong Ao,Yan Xie,Duowen Yan,Xinchen Shang,Shakeel Ahmad,Danping Wu,Xinwei Dong,Bo Pan

Mn substitution elevates goethite's surface hydroxyl density versus pure goethite. • More surface hydroxyls on Mn-goethite accelerate humification from precursors. • Mn-goethite serves as oxidant to promote oxypolymerization of humic precursors. • DMSO hydrogen-bond shielding lowers electron transfer and Mn²⁺ release in solution. Electron transfer via hydrogen bonding is crucial for humification. s In nature settings, iron minerals usually coexist with manganese in an isomorphous-replacement manner, attributable to the equal ionic radii of ferric iron and trivalent manganese. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether abundant surface hydroxyl groups on manganese-substituted iron minerals influence humification. Herein, the abiotic humification of humic precursors with manganese-substituted iron mineral (e.g. Mn-substituted goethite) was systematically investigated for the first time, especially in the role of hydrogen bonding interactions between the mineral and humic precursors. Mn-substituted goethite possessed a greater surface hydroxyl density compared to pure goethite, resulting in a significantly accelerated humification rate. Furthermore, the introduction of a hydrogen bonding shielding agent, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), into the reaction system containing humic precursors and the mineral resulted in a marked decrease in both the manganese concentration within the precursor solution and the system’s overall electron transfer capability. These results demonstrated that hydrogen bonding between the mineral and humic precursors enhanced their electron transfer rate, thereby facilitating the humification process. This research offers new insights into abiotic humification mediated by iron/manganese concomitant minerals, enriching the understanding of the global carbon cycle affected by soil geochemical processes. Synergistic redox adsorption of multiple iodine species by a Cu0-anchored Mn-Cu carbon composite

Jiuyu Chen,Zhiwen Liu,Zenghui Liu,Hao Wu,Chensheng Gao,Jiaqi Shi,Dingming Xue

Radioactive iodine ( 131 I and 129 I) produced by the development of nuclear energy poses a long-term threat to ecology and health. In this study, a series of Cu@Mn x Cu 10-x -C materials were synthesized using Mn x Cu 10-x -BTC as the precursor, followed by surface grinding with external copper salts and subsequent pyrolysis. The material achieved a uniform dispersion of high-density Cu 0 sites on the Mn-Cu carbon framework. The optimal material Cu@Mn 3 Cu 7 -C had saturated adsorption capacities of 346.6 mg/g and 1555.3 mg/g for iodide (I − ) and iodine (I 2 ) respectively, further improving under acidic and oxygen-rich conditions. In addition, it could maintain excellent I − adsorption performance in the presence of highly competitive anions, in actual water samples, and after high-dose γ-irradiation. Mechanism studies demonstrated that Cu 0 , as the reaction center, dominated the oxidation-adsorption of I − and the reduction and fixation of I 2 , while triiodide (I 3 − ) could be effectively eliminated through the [Cu → I 3 ] charge transfer complexation or disproportionation pathway. The Mn species cooperated with the Cu site through valence modulation and electron transfer. This study provides a material system and theoretical basis for the efficient removal of multiple iodine species in complex water bodies with high capacity, fast kinetics and good environmental adaptability.

Ultrahigh electric field-induced asymmetric strain in Mn-doped KNN piezoceramics sintered in reducing atmosphere

Xiao Ma,Zhihao Dong,Weichen Zhang,Ying Jiang,Xu Cheng,Limin Guo,Peiyao Zhao,Xiaohui Wang

Piezoelectric actuators are widely used industrial electronic devices. In recent years, driven by environmental concerns, lead-free piezoelectric materials, particularly KNN-based ceramics, have gained increasing attention. In this study, Mn-doped KNN piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method and sintered in a reducing atmosphere. By employing a synergistic strategy involving defect dipoles and ferroelectric domain switching, a giant converse piezoelectric coefficient of 2676 pm/V and a strain of 0.67% are achieved in the KNNM ceramics under an electric field of 2.5 kV/mm. In our ceramic samples, no obvious strain enhancement attributable to electrobending is observed. The ceramic exhibits excellent thermal stability, with performance degradation of less than 10% from room temperature to 170 °C, and maintains favorable performance after 2 million fatigue cycles. Considering the combination of excellent piezoelectric properties, high temperature stability, superior fatigue resistance, and reduction resistance, KNNM ceramics are expected to facilitate the development of lead-free piezoelectric actuators compatible with base-metal internal electrodes.

Sustainable All-Mn-Based Layered Cathode with Dynamic Structural Stability for Durable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Xuchun Chen,Guangliang Lin,Yuyu Deng,Pei Liu,Jieran Liu,Zhiqin Sun,Qing-Lun Wang,Ting Jin,Lifang Jiao

Layered sodium all-Mn-based oxide materials are confronted with irreversible dynamic structural degradation induced by [MnO 6 ] layers gliding and Jahn–Teller (J–T) distortion of high-spin Mn 3+ during cycling. Although conventional strategies often focus primarily on reducing Mn 3+ content in the pristine material, we reveal that such static valence control is insufficient to ensure long-term structural integrity. Instead, we demonstrate that dynamic structural regulation effectively decouples the Mn oxidation state changes from degradation pathways. By designing a P’2-type [Na 0.64 Zn 0.07 ]Mn 0.92 Cu 0.08 O 2 (NZMCO) cathode, which maintains the same initial Mn oxidation state as Na 0.67 MnO 2 (NMO), we achieve exceptional cycling stability via a hierarchical damping-like mechanism. The designed framework integrates two synergistic stabilization pathways: (i) intralayer coordination tuning by counterbalancing Mn─O bond anisotropy, and (ii) interlayer electrostatic shielding to alleviate gliding between adjacent [MnO 6 ] layers. This strategic configuration effectively alleviates lattice strain and stress accumulation, suppresses microcrack formation, and significantly reduces transition metal dissolution. Consequently, NZMCO delivers a high specific capacity of 194.95 mAh g −1 at 20 mA g −1 , retaining 87.53% of its initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 . This work shifts the design paradigm from static Mn valence engineering toward dynamic structural adaptation, offering a sustainable pathway for all-Mn-based layered cathodes.

Al/Ti Co-doped Fe/Mn-based layered oxide for high-performance sodium-ion storage

Wenshuo Zhao,Yanzhe Zhang,Yong-Li Wang,Tong Wu,Yingying Zhang,Jingjing Sun,Xiangrong Liu,YONGJIE ZHAO

Fe-Mn based layered transition metal oxides are compelling candidates for sodium-ion cathodes owing to their high specific capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical application is hampered by inherent challenges including the Jahn-Teller effect, lattice oxygen loss, transition metal dissolution. In this study, Al/Ti co-doped Na0.67Fe0.4Mn0.4Al0.1Ti0.1O2 (FM-AT) cathode is proposed and prepared. The introduction of Al/Ti, creating strong Al-O and Ti-O bonds, effectively stabilizes the lattice oxygen and elevates the reversibility of anionic redox reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the transition metal layer is effectively enhanced, suppressing transition metal dissolution and the P2-OP4 phase transition associated with TMO2 layer slippage at deep charge states. The FM-AT demonstrates excellent cycling stability, with a capacity of 137.1 mAh g-1 under 20 mA g-1 and a capacity retention of 85.5% after 50 cycles (55.7% for the pristine FM cathode). Even after 200 cycles under 200 mA g-1, a capacity retention of 72.1% is achieved (versus 20.9% for the FM). This work offers a novel method for enhancing the structural stability of iron-manganese based electrode and designing cost-effective, high-performance sodium ion cathodes.

Z-Scheme MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-SrTiO3 heterostructure for efficient photocatalytic degradation of o-nitrophenol

Omar Mirna,Omar Sarah,El-Subruiti Gehan M.,Attia Nour F.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem

With growing concerns over water pollution and depletion of freshwater resources, finding sustainable and cost-effective solutions for water treatment is crucial. This study introduces a novel MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-doped SrTiO3 (MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO) direct Z-scheme photocatalyst, designed to efficiently degrade organic contaminants in water. Specifically, the photocatalytic degradation of o-nitrophenol (ONP) was investigated under an Xe lamp. The MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO photocatalyst demonstrated a maximum removal efficiency of 97.75% within 90 min, with a rate constant (k) of 0.0374 min−1, outperforming the individual MIL-53(Fe) and Mn-STO photocatalysts. A comprehensive analysis of the material’s properties was conducted using Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence techniques, and the photocatalytic activity was evaluated under various conditions, including variations in pH, ONP concentration, catalyst dosage and the presence of inorganic anions. The improved photocatalytic activity of the MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO system can be ascribed to the synergistic interaction between its two components, which also contributed to its excellent recyclability over five cycles. These findings demonstrate that MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO is a highly effective and sustainable photocatalyst with a strong potential for wastewater treatment applications.

New insights into the role of powdered activated carbon in Mn(II) oxidation by ozone

Beiping Zhang,Haixiang Sun,Kun Wang,Dawen Zha,Yankun Liu,Yuchao Tang,Xianhuai Huang

Ozone–activated carbon (O 3 /AC) systems are widely applied for the removal of soluble manganese (Mn(II)) in drinking water treatment. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, the effects of granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) on Mn(II) removal by O 3 were investigated. Mn(II) was rapidly removed by O 3 alone ( k obs = 0.069 s −1 ), whereas lower rate constants of 0.048 and 0.031 s −1 were observed in the O 3 /GAC and O 3 /PAC systems, respectively, at pH 7.0. Although increasing pH enhanced Mn(II) oxidation by O 3 alone, the inhibitory effect of PAC became progressively stronger from pH 7 to 9. The inhibitory effects of GAC and PAC on Mn(II) removal were closely associated with enhanced O 3 consumption, as demonstrated by O 3 decay experiments. Although hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 •⁻ ) were generated in the O 3 /GAC and O 3 /PAC systems, radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that these species contributed negligibly to Mn(II) oxidation. Overall, GAC and PAC enhanced O 3 consumption and reduced Mn(II) removal. These findings provide new mechanistic insights into the role of AC (especially PAC) in O 3 oxidation for Mn(II) removal and contribute to a deeper understanding of combined O 3 /AC oxidation processes.

Spin-State Reconfiguration in Single Mn Sites Directs Selective Two-Electron O2 Reduction to H2O2

Ge Xiao,Wu Xinyi,Liu Xinya,Zheng Xiyang,Xu Jinze,Tian Li-jiao,Wang Wei,Wang Xiaozhi

Spin state strongly governs the pathway selectivity of photocatalytic oxygen reduction, dictating whether the reaction proceeds via the desired two electron (2e – ) route to H 2 O 2 or the competing four electron (4e – ) pathway. Herein, this work reports a ligand-field symmetry-breaking strategy that enables controlled spin state switching, thereby steering the oxygen reduction pathway toward selective two electron H 2 O 2 production. Specifically, symmetry breaking creates an asymmetric equatorial ligand field, triggering a deterministic spin state transition from intermediate spin to high spin on the Mn site. The resulting high-spin configuration features delocalized d-states and a downshifted d-band center, which collectively weaken *OOH adsorption to suppress premature O–O bond cleavage while preserving efficient O 2 activation through spin polarized electron transfer. As a result, the optimized high spin catalyst delivers an exceptional H 2 O 2 production rate of 5025 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 under simulated sunlight, representing a 2.3-fold enhancement over its intermediate spin (IS) counterpart. Furthermore, its activity is maintained under natural sunlight in ambient air, achieving a H 2 O 2 production rate of 2662 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 . This work establishes ligand field symmetry breaking as a precise and generalizable paradigm for spin state engineering in single atom catalysis, offering a direct route to overcome the selectivity efficiency compromise in photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 .
