Carbon-coated MoSe2/Mo2CTx (MXene) heterostructure for efficient hydrogen evolution

Yuanbo Tan,Mingjie Yi,Zhenye Zhu,Xueting Zhang,Ke Qin,Jiaheng Zhang,Rongshu Zhu

Herein, a mesh carbon-coated MoSe 2 /Mo 2 CT x hybrid material (MoSe 2 /Mo 2 CT x @C) is proposed as an effective catalyst for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). On one hand, the highly conductive Mo 2 CT x substrate enhanced charge transfer ability and effectively prevented the agglomeration of MoSe 2 nanosheets to expose abundant active sites. On the other hand, the carbon coating layer further improved the conductivity and effectively prevented Mo 2 CT x from being oxidized in the environment. Consequently, the unique MoSe 2 /Mo 2 CT x @C hybrid material exhibited excellent HER performance. Specifically, the MoSe 2 /Mo 2 CT x @C catalyst only required an overpotential of 108.3 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displayed excellent durability under long-term cycling in acidic solution. This research highlights the potential applications of MXene-based composite materials in the energy field.

Tribological properties of Ti3C2Tx MXene reinforced interpenetrating polymers network coating

Dongmei He,Meng Cai,Han Yan,Qilan Lin,Xiaoqiang Fan,Lin Zhang,Minhao Zhu

Multiple advantages of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene are of significance to enhance the mechanical properties of organic coating . Herein, few-layer amino-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets (k-Ti 3 C 2 ) were introduced into interpenetrating polymers network (IPN) for constructing k-Ti 3 C 2 /IPN composite coatings , and their tribological properties were investigated in depth. The composite coating with 0.75 wt% k-Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets displays excellent tribological behaviors under extremely operating conditions, like the lowest COF (0.18) and the highest OCP value (−0.28 V) under tribocorrosion condition. Such excellent tribological properties mainly depend on good dispersion and interfacial compatibility of k-Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets in IPN matrix, as well as amino functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets as barrier to external damage. This work highlights a pathway to solve the wear/corrosion problem of organic coatings under extreme conditions.

Confining Aqueous Zn–Br Halide Redox Chemistry by Ti3C2TX MXene

Xinliang Li,Na Li,Zhaodong Huang,Ze Chen,Yuwei Zhao,Guojin Liang,Qi Yang,Mian Li,Qing Huang,Binbin Dong,Jun Fan,Chunyi Zhi

With fluidity and dangerous corrosiveness, liquid insulating bromine elemental (Br2) can hardly be confined by traditional conductive carriers (mainly carbon materials) for efficient redox without shuttle behavior. Thus, stationary Br2-based energy storage devices are rarely advanced. Here, we introduce an electrochemical active parasite Br2 to the Ti3C2TXMXene host and construct an advanced aqueous zinc redox battery via a facile electrodeposition process (Br-Ti3C2TX). Both ex situ experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) simulations have validated the natural affinity between MXenes and Br species, which is manifested as their spontaneous fixation accompanied by rapid transfer of electrons in the interface region and interlayer confinement. Consequently, the battery delivers a high-voltage plateau at 1.75 V that contributes to an improved energy density of 259 Wh kg–1Br (144 Wh kg–1Br-Ti3C2TX), exhibiting efficient output capability in the high-voltage region. Besides, benefiting from enhanced redox kinetics, the capacity achieved at −15 °C approaches to 69% of the value at room temperature. More importantly, an excellent 10 000 cycles at −15 °C with negligible capacity decay is identified. The paradigm represents a step forward for developing stationary aqueous metal-Br2 batteries.

Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanosheet/Metal–Organic Framework Composites for Microwave Absorption

Xiaopeng Han,Ying Huang,Ling Ding,Yan Song,Tiehu Li,Panbo Liu

High-performance absorbers with laminated and three-dimensional structures for abundant interfaces can improve electromagnetic wave absorption property obviously. Meanwhile, the combination and dispersion of components have a positive effect on the microwave absorption (MA) property for excellent absorption bandwidth. Herein, accordion-like MXene/Co-ZIF and MXene/Ni-ZIF composites were synthesized by electrostatic self-assembly between MXene and metal–organic frameworks (Co-MOF and Ni-MOF) and then pyrolyzed in the H2/Ar mixed atmosphere (Co-MOF and Ni-MOF named as Co-ZIF and Ni-ZIF, respectively, after pyrolysis). The MXene/Co-CZIF 50% composites displayed good absorption performance with the optimal RL value of −60.09 dB at 7.36 GHz and the broadened absorption bandwidth 9.3 GHz (RL < −10 dB). MXene/Ni-CZIF 50% exhibited promising performance with the RL value measured up to −64.11 dB at 5.12 GHz, and possessed the ultrabroad effective response bandwidth of 4.56 GHz (RL < −10 dB). Furthermore, a unique accordion-like structure, magnetic–dielectric synergistic, multiple interface scatterings and reflections, and dipole polarization were said to improve MA properties. This study provided a method for the synthesis of absorbers with tunable electromagnetic properties and wide absorption bandwidth of MXene-based composites.

Natural rubber latex/MXene foam with robust and multifunctional properties

Ya-Dong Yang,Gui-Xiang Liu,Yan-Chan Wei,Shuangquan Liao,Ming-Chao Luo

Low strength has always been one of the main factors limiting the application of foams. We acquire a natural rubber latex/MXene foam composite with high strength and versatility by adding MXene to the natural rubber latex. It is shown that natural rubber latex foam (NRF) with 2 and 3 phr of MXene shows obviously enhanced tensile strength by 171% and 157% separately as compared to that of neat NRF. Furthermore, the composite also has better electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding than NRF, which can be used in the automotive industry, aviation industry, and many other aspects.

Lightweight MXene/Cellulose Nanofiber Composite Film for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Cui Zhibo,Gao Chunlei,Fan Zhimin,Wang Jingfeng,Cheng Zhongjun,Xie Zhimin,Liu Yuyan,Wang Youshan

Lightweight and high-strength materials with high electromagnetic interference shielding performance are the best solution for electromagnetic pollution. However, the MXene film with extremely high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness cannot be extensively applied to the aerospace engineering because of its high density and low mechanical properties. Herein, a MXene/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composite film with low density and high conductivity (24,875 S m −1 ) was prepared by using an ice crystal sacrificial template as a pore-forming agent and CNF as a structural reinforcement. The composite film with a small thickness effectively shielded electromagnetic waves since it has a continuous three-dimensional MXene conductive network framework, which serves as a rich interface to facilitate multiple reflections and absorption attenuation of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the absolute electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the prepared film reached 9177 dB cm 2  g −1 . The design concept and approaches adopted in this work are highly efficient and scalable, which provides a bright prospect for the development of the MXene/polymer composites with high electromagnetic interference shielding properties.

Macroporous 3D MXene architecture for solar-driven interfacial water evaporation

Maomao Ju,Yawei Yang,Jianqiu Zhao,Xingtian Yin,Yutao Wu,Wenxiu Que

Interfacial water evaporation through solar heating with photothermal materials is a promising strategy for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. Tightly packed 2D membranes with high reflection losses and limited vapor escape channels result in a low evaporation rate. In this work, 3D MXene architecture was fabricated by dropping the delaminated Ti 3 C 2 ( d d -Ti 3 C 2 ) nanosheets onto the carbonized melamine foam (CMF) framework. Owing to the macroporous 3D architecture, more effective broadband solar absorption and vapor escaping were achieved. As a result, the 3D CMF@ d d -Ti 3 C 2 -based evaporator delivers a water evaporation rate of 1.60 kg/m 2 ⋅ ⋅ h with a solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of up to 84.6%.

Hydrophilicity-Dependent Distinct Frictional Behaviors of Different Modified MXene Nanosheets

Yanxue Guan,Miaomiao Zhang,Juan Qin,Xingxing Ma,Chen Li,Jilin Tang

MXene nanosheets are promising to be ultrathin solid lubricant or interface solving the friction and wear problems of miniaturized equipment. Here, the frictional behaviors and adhesive properties of the Ti3C2, F-Ti3C2, and TMA-Ti3C2 nanosheets were explored by atomic force microscope for the first time. The nanofrictional behavior of TMA-Ti3C2 was significantly different from that of Ti3C2 and F-Ti3C2. The friction of TMA-Ti3C2 increased slightly and then decreased as the load decreased, leading to the appearance of a negative friction factor; the frictions of Ti3C2 and F-Ti3C2 decreased with decreasing load, resulting in positive friction factors. Meanwhile, because the surface of TMA-Ti3C2 was more hydrophilic than that of Ti3C2 and F-Ti3C2, the friction and adhesion of TMA-Ti3C2 were greater than those of Ti3C2 and F-Ti3C2. It indicated that the surface properties played an important role in the adhesion and friction. Hence, adjusting the surface properties of MXene nanosheets will provide a new direction for designing solid lubricants and nanointerfaces in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems.

Dispersibility and Photochemical Stability of Delaminated MXene Flakes in Water

Shuyi Shen,Tao Ke,Krishnamoorthy Rajavel,Kun Yang,Daohui Lin

The environmental stability of 2D MXene flakes must be systematically studied before their further application. Herein, the colloidal dispersibility and photochemical stability of delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene flakes modified with hydrazine (HMH) and KOH and with water as the control (HMH-Ti 3 C 2 , KOH-Ti 3 C 2 , and H 2 O-Ti 3 C 2 , respectively) are experimentally and theoretically studied. Modification greatly increases the dispersibility of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes. Their critical coagulation concentrations are 28.7, 106, and 49.1 m m NaCl, and their Hamaker constants are 23.7 × 10 −21 , 19.1 × 10 −21 , and 37.7 × 10 −21 J, respectively; the colloidal interaction follows the classical Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory. HMH-Ti 3 C 2 and KOH-Ti 3 C 2 exhibit higher photochemical stability, as indicated by their stronger resistance to oxidation under UV and visible light irradiation. Changes in their physicochemical properties and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are assayed. Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the mechanisms underlying the differences in the photochemical stability of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes. K + ions protect the flakes from oxidation by acting as a middle layer to reduce the coupling between Ti 3+ and ROS, while HMH provides stronger protection by absorbing photoelectrons or reacting with ROS. These findings provide new insight into the environmental transformation and design of functional MXenes.

MXene-hybridized silane films for metal anticorrosion and antibacterial applications

Yan Nie,Jiankun Huang,Shengyan Ma,Zhichao Li,Yongkang Shi,Xiaofang Yang,Xin Fang,Jingbin Zeng,Pengyu Bi,Jiantao Qi,Shengjie Wang,Yongqing Xia,Tifeng Jiao,Dongxiang Li,Meiwen Cao

Silanization is an effective green and pollution-free technology for metal surface treatment. However, the silane film is usually lack of anticorrosion durability due to low mechanical strength and existence of microdefects. In the present study, two-dimensional MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) sheets have been hybridized into the γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-GPS) film on AA2024 aluminum alloy surface to improve the anticorrosion property. MXene hybridization greatly enhanced the thickness and compactness of the silane film, producing uniform and dense films with fewer defects. The composite films also showed excellent adhesion to the substrate through Si-O-Al chemical bonding. The films inhibited both anode and cathode corrosions by reducing the corrosion current density as well as the diffusion rate of corrosion solution to metal surface. The neutral salt spray tests showed that the corrosion resistance of the MXene-hybridized silane film was better than that of the film obtained by traditional chromate treatment. Moreover, the composite films exhibited excellent antibacterial property by having MXene in the film for killing bacteria. The study develops a simple and effective strategy to improve the anticorrosion property of the silane film as well as to introduce antimicrobial ability, which is highly promising for practical applications in the industrial, medical and domestic fields.

MXene/metal oxides-Ag ternary nanostructures for electromagnetic interference shielding

Krishnamoorthy Rajavel,Yougen Hu,Pengli Zhu,Rong Sun,Chingping Wong

The development of smart, structured hybrid materials with superior electrical conductivity are vastly desired for the depletion of unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI). Herein, novel multilayered two-dimensional MXene/Metal Oxides-Ag ternary hybrid nanostructures with various heterogeneous assemblies were constructed by self-reduction and oxidation of MXene (Nb 2 CT x and Ti 3 C 2 T x ) in the presence of metallic salt (AgNO 3 ), and its EMI shielding performance in X- and K u -band are demonstrated. The effect of different silver nitrate addition into MXene on their structural evaluation reveals that the successful formation of MXene/Metal Oxides-Ag (Nb 2 CT x /Nb 2 O 5 -Ag; Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 -Ag) ternary hybrid nanostructures derived from MXene (Nb 2 CT x ; Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Remarkably, the Nb 2 CT x /Nb 2 O 5 -Ag hybrid assembly attains reflection dominated shielding performance with a maximum total shielding effectiveness of 68.76 dB and 72.04 dB in the X- and K u -band region respectively at a thickness of 1 mm compared to other nanostructures. The large enhancement in electromagnetic shielding capability of ternary nanostructure attributed to the strong electrical conductivity and increased interface polarization and multiple reflection loss between the ternary interfaces. The synergistic effect of metallic silver nanoparticles, semiconducting metal oxides and conducting stacked multilayer causes to conduction loss, polarization effect (dipole, and interfacial polarization), and multiple reflections of incoming radiation favor the complete dissipation of EM waves. Consequently, the demonstrated simple, cost-effective, and large scale production of highly conductive composites could pave for the potential prospect materials in advanced EM wave shielding applications.

Anisotropic Electromagnetic Absorption of Aligned Ti3C2Tx MXene/Gelatin Nanocomposite Aerogels

Minglong Yang,Ye Yuan,Ying Li,Xianxian Sun,Shasha Wang,Lei Liang,Yuanhao Ning,Jianjun Li,Weilong Yin,Yibin Li

Assembling Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets into three-dimensional (3D) architecture with controllable alignment is of great importance for electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) application. However, it is a great challenge to realize it due to the weak van der Waals interconnection between MXene nanosheets. Herein, we propose to introduce gelatin molecules as a “chemical glue” to fabricate the 3D Mxene@gelatin (M@G) nanocomposite aerogel using a unidirectional freeze casting method. The Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets are well aligned in the M@G nanocomposite aerogel, yielding much enhanced yet anisotropic mechanical properties. Due to the unidirectional aligned microstructure, the M@G nanocomposite aerogel shows significantly anisotropic EMA properties. M@G-45 shows a −59.5 dB minimum reflection loss (RLmin) at 14.04 GHz together with a 6.24 GHz effective absorption bandwidth in the parallel direction (relative to the direction of unidirectional freeze casting). However, in the vertical direction of the same M@G aerogel, RLmin is shifted to a much lower frequency (4.08 GHz) and the effective absorption bandwidth decreases to 0.86 GHz. The anisotropic electromagnetic energy dissipation mechanism was deeply investigated, and the impendence match plays a critical role for electromagnetic wave penetration. Our lightweight M@G nanocomposite aerogel with controllable MXene alignment is very promising in EMA application.
