The harmonic generation effect, a distinct nonlinear optical phenomenon , exhibits unique properties and has critical applications across multiple fields. However, harmonic generation during optical measurements can introduce significant interference or experimental errors. Here, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of Dy 3+ doped CaWO 4 phosphors under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Both characteristic yellow and blue emissions of Dy 3+ and a series of NIR-induced harmonic generation were observed. The study demonstrated that Dy 3+ emissions were excited by harmonic generation originating from the dual-grating configuration of a spectrophotometer. Leveraging the divergent temperature-dependent intensity evolution between Dy 3+ emissions and 1.5th harmonic generation, we proposed a novel ratiometric thermometric strategy based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR). This new thermometry achieved optimal temperature sensitivity, with a maximum absolute sensitivity of 74.57 × 10 −4 K −1 and relative sensitivity of 2.21 % K −1 , surpassing conventional ratiometric thermometry relying on thermally coupled energy levels. These findings not only clarified the origin of multiplex harmonic generation and its impact on spectral measurement but also harness harmonic generation for innovative applications in optical thermometry.

The pursuit of broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphors with superior luminescent efficiency and thermal stability is vital for next-generation NIR light sources. Leveraging a synergistic strategy of cation substitution and Cr 3+ content modulation, a series of Y 3- x Sc x Ga 3- y MgSiO 12 : y Cr 3+ phosphors were designed, exhibiting enhanced NIR emission covering 650–1000 nm, with a broadened full-width at half maximum and a controllable redshift in emission peak. Notably, the synthesized phosphor achieves an internal quantum efficiency of 66.9% and retains 79.5% of its initial emission intensity at 423 K. When integrated with a 450 nm blue light-emitting diode (LED) chip, the resulting NIR LED delivers a high photoelectric conversion efficiency of 9.87% at 10 mA and an output power of 48.58 mW at 300 mA. These results highlight the great potential of this phosphor for multifunctional NIR applications, including bio-imaging, night vision, and nondestructive testing.

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs), as the core light source for smart broadband near-infrared spectroscopy, face critical challenges in balancing luminous efficiency and thermal stability. Herein, we report a Cr3+-doped fluoride phosphor AlF3:Cr3+ with efficient broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission. Under blue-light excitation, AlF3:Cr3+ exhibits a broadband NIR emission centered at 749 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 87 nm. Notably, it shows excellent thermal stability, retaining 86.28% of its room-temperature luminescence intensity at 423 K (150 °C). This superior anti-thermal quenching property is attributed to the weak electron–phonon coupling in its crystal structure, characterized by a low Huang–Rhys factor (S = 2.15). By integrating this phosphor with a blue LED chip, we fabricated a NIR pc-LED device with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 2.2%@20 mA. The device would demonstrate significant advantages in diverse fields, including nondestructive testing, biomedical imaging, and intelligent security, highlighting the great potential of AlF3:Cr3+ for industrial applications.

In this study, gold nanorods (GNRs) were incorporated into the hydrogel networks formed by the copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and methacrylated poly-β-cyclodextrin (MPCD)-based macromer to fabricate an injectable and near-infrared (NIR)/pH-responsive poly(NIPAm-co-MPCD)/GNRs nanocomposite hydrogel, which could serve as a long-acting implant for chemophotothermal synergistic cancer therapy. The nanocomposite hydrogel showed superior mechanical and swelling properties, gelation characteristics, and excellent NIR-responsive property. A hydrophobic acid-labile adamantane-modified doxorubicin (AD-DOX) prodrug was loaded into the hydrogel efficiently by host–guest interaction. The nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited a manner of sustained drug release and could sustain the slow and steady release of DOX for more than 1 month. The pH-responsive release of DOX from the nanocomposite hydrogel was observed owing to the cleavage of acid-labile hydrazone bond between DOX and the adamantyl group in acidic environment. NIR irradiation could accelerate the release of DOX from the networks, which was controlled by the collapse of the hydrogel networks induced by photothermal effect of GNRs. The in vitro cytotoxicity test demonstrated the excellent biocompatibility and photothermal effect of the nanocomposite hydrogel. Moreover, the in situ-forming hydrogel showed promising tissue biocompatibility in the mouse model study. The in vivo antitumor test demonstrated the capacity of the nanocomposite hydrogel for chemophotothermal synergistic therapy with reduced adverse effects owing to the prolonged drug retention in the tumor region and efficient photothermal effect. Therefore, this injectable and NIR/pH-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited great potential as a long term drug delivery platform for chemophotothermal synergistic cancer therapy.

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) window responsive phototheranostic agents have a precise spatiotemporal potential for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this study, a full-spectrum responsive ZrO2-based phototheranostic agent was found to achieve NIR-II photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided tumour-targeting phototherapy. Initially, the ZrO2-based phototheranostic agent was fabricated through NaBH4 reduction to form boron-doped oxygen-deficient zirconia (ZrO2−x-B), an amino-functionalised SiO2 shell and a further covalent connection with hyaluronic acid (HA), namely, ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA. In the ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA system, the oxygen vacancy and boron doping resulted in full-spectrum absorption, enabling a high NIR-II photothermal conversion, high-resolution PA imaging ability and a remarkable production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The surface modification of HA provided ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA with water dispersibility and a targeting capability for CD44 overexpressed cancer cells. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that NIR-II activated ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA had a targeted photothermal/photodynamic effect for cancer elimination under the real-time guidance of NIR-II PAs. Hence, ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA displays a precise NIR-II radiation-activated phototheranostic potential for PA imaging-guided cancer-targeting photothermal/photodynamic therapy.

Near-infrared (NIR) photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising antitumor strategy under NIR light irradiation to kill cancer cells. Mitochondria has a critical function in sustaining cellular viability and death, which is the ideal organelle for PDT. Here, we reported a tetraphenylporphine (TPP)-conjugated amphiphilic copolymer and an iodinated boron dipyrromethene photosensitizer (BDPI) with high singlet oxygen yield to form nanoparticles (PBDPI-TPP), which could realize mitochondria-targeting and improve the NIR imaging-guided PDT. The as-prepared mitochondria-targeting nanoplatform could show effective subcellular localization and bring about significant irreversible mitochondrial injury for enhanced PDT. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that the mitochondria-targeting PDT system could achieve a remarkable therapeutic effect, indicating that it is a promising nanoplatform for NIR imaging-guided PDT in cancer therapeutics.

Designing Si nanowire-based heterostructures provides a promising path to construct self-driven and broadband photodetectors, which are the key components for optoelectronic systems. Herein, the first fabrication of a p-CuIn 0.7 Ga 0.3 Se 2 nanoparticles/n-Si nanowire array core–shell structure through a simple two-stage process—spin coating and selenization treatment—and its integration into a self-driven photodetector are reported. The heterojunction photodetector is sensitive to broad wavelength range from UV light to visible and near-infrared light, with high detectivity of up to 1.6 × 10 13 Jones, large responsivity of 0.33 A W −1 , and an ultrafast response speed of 823/356 µs at zero bias. Additionally, this core–shell nanostructure exhibits good air stability and strong ability to detect weak light sources such as fluorescent lamp and lighter. The superior performance can be attributed to the strong light absorption of both Si and CuIn 0.7 Ga 0.3 Se 2 , the unique vertically standing core–shell structure, and effective photogenerated carriers' separation and transportation at the heterojunction interface.

Purpose A synergistic antibacterial system employing photocatalytic performance and low-temperature photothermal effect (LT-PTT) with the potential for infectious skin wound healing promotion was developed. Methods Ag/Ag2O was synthesized with a two-step method, and its physicochemical properties were characterized. After its photocatalytic performance and photothermal effect were evaluated under 0.5 W/cm2 808 nm NIR laser irradiation, its antibacterial activities in both planktonic and biofilm forms were then studied in vitro targeting Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus), and the biocompatibility was tested with L-929 cell lines afterward. Finally, the animal model of dorsal skin wound infection was established on Sprague-Dawley rats and was used to assess infectious wound healing promotion of Ag/Ag2O in vivo. Results Ag/Ag2O showed boosted photocatalytic performance and local temperature accumulation compared with Ag2O when exposed to 0.5 W/cm2 808 nm NIR irradiation, which therefore endowed Ag/Ag2O with the ability to kill pathogens rapidly and cleavage bacterial biofilm in vitro. Furthermore, after treatment with Ag/Ag2O and 0.5 W/cm2 808 nm NIR irradiation, infectious wounds of rats realized skin tissue regeneration from a histochemical level. Conclusion By exhibiting excellent NIR-triggered photocatalytic sterilization ability enhanced by low-temperature photothermal effect, Ag/Ag2O was promising to be a novel, photo-responsive antibacterial agent.

Background Macrophages with tumor-tropic migratory properties can serve as a cellular carrier to enhance the efficacy of anti neoplastic agents. However, limited drug loading (DL) and insufficient drug release at the tumor site remain the main obstacles in developing macrophage-based delivery systems. In this study, we constructed a biomimetic delivery system (BDS) by loading doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into a mouse macrophage-like cell line (RAW264.7), hoping that the newly constructed BDS could perfectly combine the tumor-tropic ability of macrophages and the photothermal property of rGO. Results At the same DOX concentration, the macrophages could absorb more DOX/PEG-BPEI-rGO than free DOX. The tumor-tropic capacity of RAW264.7 cells towards RM-1 mouse prostate cancer cells did not undergo significant change after drug loading in vitro and in vivo. PEG-BPEI-rGO encapsulated in the macrophages could effectively convert the absorbed near-infrared light into heat energy, causing rapid release of DOX. The BDS showed excellent anti-tumor efficacy in vivo. Conclusions The BDS that we developed in this study had the following characteristic features: active targeting of tumor cells, stimuli-release triggered by near-infrared laser (NIR), and effective combination of chemotherapy and photothermotherapy. Using the photothermal effect produced by PEG-BPEI-rGO and DOX released from the macrophages upon NIR irradiation, MAs-DOX/PEG-BPEI-rGO exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth.

Rational design of tumor-microenvironment (TME)-activated nanoformulation for precisely targeted cancer treatment has recently attracted an enormous attention. However, the all-in-one TME-activated theranostic nanosystems with a simple preparation and high biocompatibility are still rarely reported. Herein, catalase nanocrystals (CatCry) are first introduced as a tumor microenvironment activatable nanoplatform for selective theranostics of colon cancer. They are engaged as (i) a “nanoreactor” for silver nanoparticles (AgNP) synthesis, (ii) a nanovehicle for tumor delivery of anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), and (iii) an in situ O2 generator to relief tumor hypoxia. When CatCry-AgNP-DOX nanoformulation is within a tumor, the intratumoral H2S turns AgNP into Ag2S nanoparticles, inducing a photothermal effect and NIR-II emission under 808 nm laser irradiation and also triggering DOX release. Simultaneously, CatCry catalyzes intratumoral H2O2 into O2, relieving hypoxia and enhancing chemotherapy. In contrast, when delivered to healthy tissue without increased concentration of H2S, the developed nanoformulation remains in the “off” state and no theranostic action takes place. Studies with colon cancer cells in vitro and a murine colon cancer model in vivo demonstrated that CatCry-AgNP-DOX delivered a synergistic combination of PTT and enhanced chemotherapy, enabling complete eradication of tumor with minimal side effects. This work not only introduces nanoplatform for theranostics of H2S-rich tumors but also suggests a general strategy for protein-crystal-based nanomedicine.

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section The limited osteogenic capacity of magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) has constrained its biomedical applications, underscoring the necessity to develop MPC with enhanced physical properties and bone-forming capabilities. In this study, a multifunctional MPC system was developed by incorporating zoledronic acid-loaded near-infrared (NIR)-responsive nanocarriers, strontium oxide (SrO), and hyaluronic acid (HA). The nanocarriers were constructed using dual-layer poly-dopamine (PDA) modification of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), enabling controlled drug release and antibacterial efficacy under NIR stimulation. The optimized Sr-ZMP-HA MPC demonstrated prolonged setting time, near-neutral pH, superior injectability, and improved compressive strength. Immersion tests revealed its sustained degradation resistance. This composite material exhibited excellent biocompatibility along with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic properties, particularly when activated by NIR irradiation. The experiments demonstrated that NIR-triggered Sr-ZMP-HA MPC promoted osteoblast-derived exosome secretion. These exosomes mediated miRNA transfer to osteoclasts, effectively suppressing their proliferation and differentiation while delaying bone tissue senescence. This dual-functional system, combining NIR-responsive nanomedicine with exosome-mediated intercellular communication, provided a novel strategy for developing advanced bone repair materials, potentially addressing current limitations in orthopedic applications through synergistic mechanical reinforcement and biological activation mechanisms. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 磷酸镁骨水泥(MPC)有限的成骨能力限制了其在生物医学中的应用,因此开发具有良好物理性能和骨形成能力的MPC是必要的。

Rapid monitoring and effective elimination of pathogenic bacteria in the environment are crucial for ensuring public health and safety. However, designing an integrated platform with both rapid detection and sterilization capabilities remains challenging. Herein, multifunctional hydrogel (NH 2 -NM@IR780/OSA/MBG hydrogel) triggered by a single NIR laser was constructed for rapid detection and synergistic photothermal/photodynamic sterilization. The NH 2 -NM@IR780/OSA/MBG hydrogel was prepared via a Schiff base reaction between NH 2 -NM@IR780 and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), followed by the incorporation of 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-glucuronide (MBG). In vitro experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel responds to enzymes secreted by bacteria to generate blue fluorescence, achieving rapid detection of bacteria. Meanwhile, IR780 in NH 2 -NM@IR780 hydrogel under 808 nm laser irradiation not only generated abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for photodynamic therapy, but also produced a large amount of heat to kill bacteria. Through the above process, a single NIR could simultaneously regulate the photodynamic and photothermal performance to achieve efficient sterilization, which effectively improved the synergistic effect between the two therapeutic modes. Therefore, our strategy provides a novel way to achieve rapid bacterial detection and efficient sterilization. Graphical abstract
