P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27−xMn0.62YxO2 (x = 0, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%) cathode materials were successfully prepared using a traditional solid-state method with ball milling-assisted modification. The effect of Y-doping on the crystal structure, grain size, morphology and sodium storage performance of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that the ball-milling pre-treatment method could effectively reduce the grain size and mitigate the aggregation of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2. Additionally, reasonable Y-doping (x = 1%) significantly enhances the rate capability and cycling stability of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2via improving the Na+ diffusion kinetics and the reversibility of the oxygen redox reaction. These results indicate that Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.26Mn0.62Y0.01O2 is a promising candidate material for high-rate and long-life cathodes for Na-ion battery application.

We succeed in obtaining Mo 2 C embedded in S-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/SC) nanofibers by electrospinning and sulfuration. The use of S-doped carbon not only provides more additional Na + storage active sites to enhance its sodium storage performance, but also increases electrons migration and ions diffusion. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the electrode exhibits excellent rate capacities of 242 and 96 mA h g −1 from 0.1 A g −1 to 5 A g −1 . Excitingly, the high-rate performance is superior, achieving 102.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 over 1000th cycle. This project provides ideas for the development the high-rate and long-term stable of the Mo 2 C in energy storage devices.

Na3LuB8O15, the first sodium lutetium borate in the Na–Lu–B–O system, was prepared by the spontaneous crystallization method. Na3LuB8O15 is crystallized in the centrosymmetric triclinic space group P1¯ with the following cell parameters: a = 6.4047(12)Å, b = 7.3342(13)Å, c = 13.081(2)Å, α = 88.999(7)°, β = 78.631(8)°, γ = 66.622(7)°, and Z = 2. The general configuration of Na3LuB8O15 can be characterized as a network structure created by infrequent multiboron anion chain skeletons [B8O17] and [LuO7] polyhedra shared by oxygen atoms, where Na ions are filled in the pores to balance charges. According to a UV–vis-NIR spectrum investigation, the chemical has a short ultraviolet cutoff edge (185 nm). Thermal analysis reveals incongruent melting compound properties. In addition, a first-principles calculation was conducted to delve deeper into the correlation between the performance and the structure.

Metal–air batteries are important power sources for electronics and vehicles because of their remarkable high theoretical energy density and low cost. In this work, we firstly investigate the electrochemical properties of sodium air batteries (SABs) with the addition of ferrocene in the electrolyte. Combining charge–discharge measurements with field-emission transmission electron microscopy images of the discharged air cathodes, our results have demonstrated that two different pathways with ferrocene as an electrocatalyst and involved in the electrochemistry during the charge process might be governed by the morphological features of the electrode caused by the deposition of Na2O2 in SABs. The SAB with ferrocene as a catalyst exhibits a high cycling performance of up to 230 cycles with a high capacity of 1000 mA h g−1.

Flexible aqueous zinc-based batteries (ZBs) are promising for wearable electronics but are hindered by low operating voltage and poor cycling stability. While zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZnHCF) represents a promising cathode candidate, its practical application is limited by rapid capacity decay. This failure is conventionally attributed to irreversible structural collapse. Herein, our findings depart from the prevailing view by demonstrating that degraded cathodes retain their structural integrity and recover capacity in specific media. We identify the primary failure mechanism as Zn 2+ entrapment induced by strong electrostatic interactions, distinct from lattice dissolution. Leveraging this insight, a dual-regulation strategy is proposed utilizing Na + co-intercalation to mitigate ion trapping and a quasi-solid composite hydrogel to suppress water activity. Consequently, a high full-cell voltage (1.8 V) Zn//ZnHCF battery is developed delivering exceptional stability over 4000 cycles. This work not only revises the fundamental understanding of ZnHCF degradation but also provides a robust pathway for high-performance aqueous energy storage. Graphical Departing from the prevailing view that ZnHCF degradation arises from irreversible structural collapse, this work identifies Zn 2+ entrapment induced by strong electrostatic interactions as the primary failure mechanism. By introducing Na + co-intercalation to mitigate ion trapping, ZnHCF reversibility is markedly enhanced, enabling a flexible 1.8 V Zn//ZnHCF battery with exceptional cycling stability supported by a quasi-solid composite hydrogel.

The efficient extraction of lithium from high Na/Li ratio brines remains a critical challenge for sustainable resource utilization. This study develops a trioctyl phosphate (TOP)-dibenzoylmethane (DBM)-kerosene synergistic extraction system guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal complementary electrostatic interactions between the enol oxygen of DBM and the P O group of TOP, facilitating the formation of stable coordination sites for Li + . Under optimized conditions, the system achieves a single-stage lithium extraction efficiency of 97%. Furthermore, an innovative CO 2 -based stripping process eliminates the need for conventional acids by in situ generation of H + via the reaction of CO 2 with H 2 O forms carbonic acid, enabling simultaneous lithium stripping and direct precipitation of Li 2 CO 3 . The integrated process demonstrates high efficiency under ambient conditions, achieving >99% stripping within 4 min and concentrating lithium over 10-fold. The resulting Li 2 CO 3 product exhibits high purity (>99.9%) and well-defined crystallinity, suitable for battery applications. The system maintained excellent stability over ten extraction-washing-stripping cycles with consistent performance. This work offers a green and efficient strategy for lithium recovery from challenging brine sources, combining theoretical molecular design with sustainable process engineering.

Temporal modulation of upconversion luminescence (UCL) has attracted considerable interest. However, rise-edge-based tuning strategy is often hampered by severe luminescence quenching, underscoring the need for rational design strategies that simultaneously optimize temporal dynamics and absolute UCL output. Herein, by introducing Na + ions as charge compensators, we overcame the low solubility of Yb 3+ in the SrMoO 4 host lattice and achieve a quenching concentration of up to 20 mol%, far exceeding typical levels in aliovalent doping systems. Coupled with the concomitant lattice distortion, this strategy enhances the excitation energy absorption of Yb 3+ , the energy transfer efficiency from Yb 3+ to Ho 3+ , and the radiative transition rate of Ho 3+ . The green and red UCL intensities exhibit enhancements of >3000-fold and >2000-fold, respectively, yielding a high upconversion quantum yield (UCQY) of 4.11 % and excellent temporal color tunability. These findings provide valuable insights for developing UCL materials capable of efficient dynamic luminescence control.

Sodium-ion batteries are promising energy storage devices due to abundant sodium, inherent safety, and low cost, but irreversible sodium loss during initial cycles limits their reversible capacity and long-term stability. Cathode sodium-supplemented additives offer a simple and fabrication-compatible strategy. Herein, an organic sodium-supplemented additive, sodium squarate (Na2C4O4, NCO), is introduced into the high-capacity Prussian white (PW) cathodes to achieve efficient sodium compensation. During the first charge, NCO undergoes decomposition, releasing additional Na+ ions to compensate for irreversible sodium consumption associated with SEI formation and other interfacial side reactions. Meanwhile, the generated CO2 participates in interfacial reactions, leading to the formation of a carbonate-rich cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the PW cathode, while its diffusion toward the anode promotes the construction of a robust SEI enriched with carbonate species and sodium fluoride (NaF) on the hard-carbon anode. As a result, the PW-10% NCO||HC full cell delivers an enhanced discharge capacity of 100 mAh g–1, compared to 53 mAh g–1 for the pristine PW||HC full cell. Moreover, a multilayer pouch cell obtained a capacity retention of 80.1% after 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights NCO as an effective cathode sodium-supplemented additive and provides insights into the interfacial regulation for sodium-ion full cells.

(K,Na)NbO₃-based ceramics are widely regarded as a promising type of lead-free piezoelectric materials to replace the current lead-containing ones. However, due to polymorphic phase transitions, achieving a desirable comprehensive piezoelectric performance of high piezoelectric coefficient d ₃₃ and large electromechanical coupling factors k p , k t and k 33 along with good thermal stabilities (which are characterized by minimal temperature dependence and ageing degradation) in them is extremely challenging. The poled and subsequently thermally-stabilized <001>-textured 0.98(K₀.₄₈Na₀.₅₂)₀.₉₉Li₀.₀₁(Nb₀.₉₈Sb₀.₀₂)O₃–0.02(Bi₀.₅₀Na₀.₅₀)ZrO₃ ceramic was recently identified as an effective solution to the issue. It possesses a d ₃₃ of 405 pC/N along with k ₚ ≈ 0.80, k ₜ ≈ 0.60, k ₃₃ ≈ 0.88 at room temperature, and its piezoelectric properties are of weak temperature dependence across a broad operational range and show remarkable retention even after thermal ageing at 250 °C. Particularly, its d ₃₃ has an average of 425 pC/N with the variation ≤ ± 6.5% from room temperature to 100 °C, and its k ₜ keeps almost constant between -60 °C and 110 °C. In general, this ceramic exhibits an outstanding comprehensive performance that well competes to those of benchmark commercial piezoceramics such as PZT-5A and PZT-5H, indicating the great potential for advanced ultrasonic applications. Analysis reveals that the excellent piezoelectric properties originate from the synergistic effect of crystallographic anisotropy and an engineered, dense domain structure of orthorhombic phase. Meanwhile, the remarkable thermal ageing stability is possibly attributed to the relaxed crystal structure and the stabilized domain structure, both facilitated by the repeated orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transitions in the thermal treatment.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes are regarded as highly promising solid electrolyte materials owing to their favorable chain flexibility. However, their practical application is hindered by low room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. To address these issues, a metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) with a 2D layered structure and 1D microchannels is introduced into PEO to form a composite solid electrolyte. The results reveal that Cu-MOF can suppress PEO crystallization through steric hindrance and coordination interactions, thereby increasing the fraction of the amorphous phase. Moreover, its unsaturated metal sites can attract TFSI−anions, promoting the dissociation of the sodium salt and enhancing sodium-ion transport. Theoretical calculations and molecular simulations further confirm the regulatory role of Cu-MOF in ion transport. Leveraging this mechanism, the Na3V2(PO4)3/C|PCM-8%|Na cell delivers exceptional electrochemical performance over a wide temperature range. At room temperature, the capacity exhibits virtually no decay after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, and outstanding rate capability is maintained even at a high rate of 4 C. At a temperature of 65 °C, a capacity retention of 91.4% is achieved after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. This study offers a highly promising strategy for the development of wide-temperature-range, high-performance solid-state sodium batteries.

Quasi-solid-state
sodium–sulfur (Na–S)
batteries
are widely regarded as promising candidates for next-generation energy
storage due to their higher energy density and enhanced safety over
traditional liquid-electrolyte counterparts. However, electrolyte
solidification restricts ion transport within the sulfur cathode,
leading to poor sulfur utilization and exacerbating sluggish sodium
polysulfide (NaPS) conversion kinetics. Current cathode designs mitigate
this challenge by introducing a high proportion of conductive additives
to expand the sulfur–carbon-electrolyte triple-phase interfaces
(TPIs), which inevitably sacrifices the practical energy density of
the battery. This challenge becomes more severe under practical conditions
of high sulfur contents (50 wt %), where both ionic and electronic
pathways are simultaneously obstructed. Here, we develop a presodiated
TiO 2 (Na x TiO 2 ) electrocatalyst
possessing ion-electron dual-conductive characteristics via an electrochemical
ion-intercalation approach. The introduction of Na x TiO 2 extends the active surface beyond conventional
TPIs, enabling rapid catalytic conversion of NaPSs directly at the
sulfur-Na x TiO 2 dual-phase interfaces
(DPIs). Mechanistic studies show that Na intercalation modulates the
local Ti–O coordination environment and the Ti 3d-O 2p electronic
structure, which significantly improves the electronic conductivity
and interfacial Na + transfer kinetics of TiO 2 while reducing the energy barrier for the rate-determining Na 2 S 2 -to-Na 2 S step in NaPS conversion.
Consequently, an ultrahigh sulfur utilization exceeding 80% is achieved
in a high-sulfur-content cathode (70 wt %), delivering a high initial
specific capacity of 1391.2 mAh g –1 alongside robust
cyclability over 500 cycles. The assembled practical pouch cell achieves
an impressive energy density of 372 Wh kg –1 . This
work offers valuable insights into developing high-energy-density
solid-state Na–S batteries for practical applications.

Abstract Efficient capture of radioactive cesium is critical for the long-term development and environmental protection of nuclear energy. This article reports the preparation of Na+-based cation-intercalated manganese oxide (CIMO) via a solid-phase reaction method and their application to the removal of cesium ions from simulated radioactive wastewater. Among them, the manganese oxide structure obtained by Na+ intercalation is of particular interest due to its unique layered structure, excellent physicochemical properties, and excellent adsorption performance for cesium. According to the experimental findings, the layered manganese oxides exhibit outstanding affinity for Cs+ across a broad pH range of 2–8. The maximum adsorption capacity of CIMO for Cs+ is 204.23 mg/g, and the layered manganese oxide exhibits good recyclability. Additionally, in the presence of competing ions and in multiple real wastewater samples, CIMO showed exceptional adsorption removal capability for Cs+. Furthermore, it was shown that the mechanisms by which CIMO removes Cs+ ions are Na+/Cs+ ion exchange and surface electrostatic interactions. Therefore, because of its easy production and environmental friendliness, CIMO can be regarded as a potential adsorbent for the effective removal of Cs+ from radioactive waste water.
