The development of efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is highly challenging in urea-water-alkali electrolyzers. Herein, nickel-selenium electrocatalysts (denoted as Ni-Se) were controllably grown on Ni foam by a facile and simple cyclic voltammetric electrodeposition for overall urea electrolysis. Considering the good conductivity and high hydrophilic surface of Ni-Se@NF, the optimized Ni-Se electrocatalyst exhibited the eminent HER and UOR catalytic competence. In 1 M KOH with 0.33 M urea electrolyte, Ni-Se electrocatalysts required an overpotential of 181 mV for HER and potential of 1.347 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode for UOR to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 . Additionally, the electrocatalyst showed good durability in both HER and UOR. Moreover, the electrolyzer assembled by Ni-Se electrocatalysts as electrode couple exhibited a remarkable activity with a small cell voltage of 1.41 V to reach 10 mA·cm −2 for overall urea-water electrolysis.

Hydrogen energy is the most promising clean energy at present and hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting is the frontier technology of alternative energy in the future. Herein, the Ni–Mo alloy supported with nickel foam (NF) was prepared by hydrogen reduction strategy at high temperature. The catalytic activity and stability of NiMo@NF-x catalyst (x stands for temperature) with multistage (sheet/particle) array structure were studied under different temperatures. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated by contact angle and related electrochemical characterization. It was found that the surface of NiMo@NF-550 catalyst prepared at 550 °C had superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties, which contributed to the deactivation of bubbles from the surface of the electrode and improved the efficiency of the catalytic reaction. Moreover, the multi-stage array structure of sheet/particle will form a greater specific surface area than the plain sheet structure, offering more reaction sites. These results indicate that the self-supported superhydrophilic and superaerophobic Ni–Mo catalysts have excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution ability.

The development of non-precious metal catalysts in heterogeneous catalytic processes is of great importance to the hydrogenation of quinolines for both theoretical and industrial applications. Herein, an effective non-precious metal catalyst, 58% Fe 4 Ni 6 Cu 5 /MCM-41, was developed to catalyze the hydrogenation of quinolines under the green and mild conditions, which can achieve 97.5% conversion and exceeding 98% selectivity to tetrahydroquinoline in solvent-free at low temperature of 50 °C. Moreover, the acceptable results of the reusability and gram scale-up experiments proved an industrial application potential of the as-prepared catalyst. Meanwhile, in cyclohexane system, 58% Fe 4 Ni 6 Cu 5 /MCM-41 catalyst can further realize a higher activity of the hydrogenation at a lower temperature of 40 °C, achieving 98.2% conversion and 98% selectivity to tetrahydroquinoline. The existence of Fe-Ni and Ni-Cu alloys in Fe 4 Ni 6 Cu 5 /MCM-41 catalyst was demonstrated by TEM, XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPD, and Raman spectroscopy. And, Fe-Ni and Ni-Cu alloys can be well dispersed onto MCM-41 molecular sieves. For Fe 4 Ni 6 Cu 5 /MCM-41 catalyst, quinoline molecules can be adsorbed by Fe 3+ species on the surface of Fe-Ni alloy through the coordination, while hydrogen molecules can be adsorbed and activated by Ni-Cu alloy. Under the synergism of Fe-Ni and Ni-Cu alloys, the highly effective and selective hydrogenation of quinolines was achieved at low temperature and in solvent-free system. The present approach offers a prospective idea for building non-precious metal catalysts to realize the effective hydrogenation of N-heterocyclic compounds under mild conditions.

The synthesis of efficient and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by the energy-saving approach has far-reaching significance for the production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Herein, a facile route was proposed to prepare Zr-doped Ni/Fe (oxy)hydroxide layer grown on Ni-Fe foam (Zr-NiFe(OH) x /NFF) by chloride ions in-situ corrosion strategy in “NaCl-ZrOCl 2 ” mixed solution. The smooth NFF surface was effectively transformed into a rough multimetallic (oxy)hydroxide nanosheet with high electrochemical specific surface area and strong bonding to the substrate, resulting in excellent interface performance for mass transfer and charge transfer. Specifically, the incorporation of Zr 4+ regulated the electronic environment around the Ni/Fe center, as a result, adsorption energies were optimized and the inherent OER activity of active sites was enhanced. The Zr-NiFe(OH) x /NFF self-supporting electrode exhibited outstanding OER electrocatalytic activity where low overpotentials of 211 and 245 mV were obtained to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 respectively, along with impressive durability for 40 h. This work provides a simple strategy for low-cost and mass production of the robust OER self-supporting electrocatalysts.

Lamellar membranes are attracting extensive attention for high throughput and precise molecules/ions sieve separation. However, the energy-consuming exfoliation and low yield of single-layer nanosheets restrict the massive production of membranes. Herein, we facilely fabricated 2D Ni-mediated metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) membranes directly from multiply stacked nanosheets (MSNs) for both aqueous and organic molecular sieve separation. Multiply layered nanosheets were obtained from a high concentration dispersion via simple ultrasonic treatment. The morphology and chemistry of synthesized Ni-MOF nanosheets were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The thickness of Ni-MOF membranes could be well regulated by the volume of dispersion. The membrane exhibited high molecular rejection to 8GX (97.29%), EB (96.28%), CR (99.69%), and CBB (93.31%) in water, respectively and a stable perm-selectivity in continuous 24 h filtration. The lamellar membrane showed excellent pressure and pH (2–10) resistance. The membrane achieved rational permeance of various organic solvents mainly depending on viscosity and good rejection to MB (91.37%), BY (92.01%), and EB (96.90%) in isopropanol.

Mesoporous silica was used in conjunction with the ammonia evaporation method to prepare highly dispersed Ni catalysts for the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The effect of Ni dispersion on the catalytic performance was investigated by applying different Ni loadings. The pore structure, morphology, Ni dispersion, catalytic activity for DRM as well as the coke resistance were investigated. During the reaction at a relatively low temperature of 600 °C, all the three catalysts exhibited high stability in CH 4 and CO 2 conversion and excellent coke resistance, in comparison to Ni/SiO 2 catalyst prepared by the incipient wetness method. Among them, 10% Ni–SiO 2 exhibited the best catalytic performance with the maximum steady conversions of 62% and 69% for CH 4 and CO 2 at 600 °C, which was beneficial from its optimal Ni content and the presence of highly-dispersed metal nanoparticles confined in the mesopores.

Pentanediols (1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol) are important feedstock for synthesis of fine chemicals, production of which from the biomass-derived furfural or furfuryl alcohol (FA) has been considered as a sustainable route and attracted much interest. In this study, the catalysts with Ni–Fe as the metal sites and Mg–Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) as precursor of support were synthesized. The results showed that the presence of Fe in catalyst affected both the development of the pores of the catalyst and the catalytic behaviors of nickel species. A low Fe content facilitated formation of mesoporous structure, but the higher content destroyed the LDH structure, resulting in a decreased surface area. Fe could also react with metallic Ni to form NiFe alloy. This decreased the catalytic activity for the further hydrogenation of the furan ring in FA, and FA would thus have the chance to produce pentanediols via hydrogenolysis . The In-situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy characterization of hydrogenation of FA indicated that the alloying between Fe and Ni resulted in a weak adsorption of C C group in furan ring and moderate adsorption of C–O–C group, which suppressed the complete hydrogenation of FA while facilitated the ring-opening of FA to form the pentanediols.

The development of efficient sodium-ion batteries is essential to overcome the issue of limited lithium sources for preparing lithium-ion batteries. Layered Mn-based cathode materials have significant application potential because of their simple structure and high specific capacities. Serious voltage attenuation and phase transition are the prominent problems of layered manganese-sodium ion batteries. To eliminate these issues, in this study, we investigated the effects of different Mn/Ni ratios in Na-Ni-Mn cathode materials on their structural stability and electrochemical performances. Na 0. 8MnO 2 (NNM-8010), Na 0.8 Ni 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 2 (NNM-819), Na 0.8 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 (NNM-828), and Na 0.8 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.7 O 2 (NNM-837) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical analyses. The addition of Ni 2+ increased the Mn oxidation state from + 3 to + 4, thus reducing the Jahn–Teller effect of Mn 3+ and stabilizing the material structure. NNM-819 exhibited the best electrochemical performance. Its initial discharge-specific capacity was 198.5mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.2C, and the capacity retention rate after 100 cycles was 86.9% at 0.5C. Moreover, its capacity retention rate at 1.0C high-rate cycling after 100 cycles remained high 81.9%. Graphical Abstract

Ni directional doping in the lattice of CdS V with the Ni cations targeted linked to P (CdS V -Ni-P) was successfully synthesized via a step wise assembly method, which exhibited an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The photoelectric performance characterization proved that the Ni directional doping and Ni cations targeted linked with P in CdS V -Ni-P not only accelerating the photo-generated electrons transfer but also decreasing efficiency of the charge recombination. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that CdS V -Ni-P can also induce more charge-carriers participate in photocatalytic reaction and decrease electron binding restriction capacity. Moreover, the results of UV–vis DR spectra and VB-XPS spectra confirmed that the construction of this CdS V -Ni-P could effectively narrow the bandgap. Meanwhile, the result of Gibbs free energy demonstrated the S-H adsorption bond in CdS V -Ni-P was get weaken, which is benefit for hydrogen desorption from S sites, thus achieving a high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) result. Based on the synergistic effects, CdS V -Ni 6.7 -P 9.6 presented a relatively high hydrogen evolution rate of 167.5 mmol h -1 g −1 under the visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is almost 60 times of CdS V .

The construction of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions is considered as a promising approach to improve the transfer and separation of photogenerated carries in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Herein, a novel ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 with Z-scheme heterostructure is successfully fabricated from rhombic P-Ni-MOF-74 derived from Ni-MOF-74 through phosphorization treatment and ZnIn 2 S 4 flakes via a hydrothermal method . The Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 heterojunctions can provide abundant active centers, broaden the response range to visible light region, accelerate the transfer of interfacial charges, and suppress the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. As a result, ZnIn 2 S 4 /P-Ni-MOF-74 (20 wt% P-Ni-MOF-74) acquires a hydrogen production rate of 7865.31 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 4.46 times higher than that of ZnIn 2 S 4 . An apparent quantum yield is 7.84% at 420 nm wavelength. Overall, this work may provide a new pathway for the rational design of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions with photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

This paper reports a series of novel Ni-based metal–organic framework (Ni–MOFs) prepared by a facile solvothermal process. The synthetic conditions have great effects on the Ni–MOFs morphologies, porous textures, and their electrochemical performance. Improved capacitance performance was successfully realized by the in-situ hybrid of Ni–MOFs with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets (Ni–MOFs@GO). The pseudocapacitance of ca. 1457.7 F/g for Ni–MOFs obtained at 180 °C with HCl as the modulator was elevated to ca. 2192.4 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g for the Ni–MOFs@GO with GO contents of 3 wt %. Additionally, the capacitance retention was also promoted from ca. 83.5% to 85.1% of its original capacitance at 10 A/g even after 3000 cycles accordingly. These outstanding electrochemical properties of Ni-based MOF materials may be related to their inherent characteristics, such as the unique flower-like architecture and fascinating synergetic effect between the Ni–MOFs and the GO nanosheets.

Designing efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for overall water splitting remains a major challenge in hydrogen production . Herein, ammonia was introduced to pyrophosphate chelating solution assisted Ni particles preferential plating on porous Fe substrate to form coral-like Ni/NiFe-Pyro electrode. The pyrophosphate with multiple complex sites can couple with nickel and iron ions to form an integrated network structure, which also consists of metallic nickel due to the introduction of ammonia. The large network structure in Ni/NiFe-Pyro significantly enhances the synergistic effect between nickel and iron and then improves the electrocatalytic performance. As a result, the coral-like Ni/NiFe-Pyro@IF exhibits good electrocatalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrolyzer assembled with Ni/NiFe-Pyro@IF as cathode and anode just needs a low water-splitting voltage of 1.54 V to obtain the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, the stability test of Ni/NiFe-Pyro@IF is performed at the current densities ranging from 10 to 400 mA cm −2 for 50 h without any significant decay, indicating robust catalytic stability for overall water splitting. This strategy for synthesizing metal/metal pyrophosphate composites may provide a new avenue for future studies of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts .
