Tuning the structure-activity of fillers and matrix is crucial for designing polymer-based dielectric capacitors with high energy storage performance. Up to date, how the fillers’ structural characteristics (surface/interface configurations, dimensions, orientations etc .) contribute to the overall energy storage is far from unveiled. To this end, a combined filler-polymer dual-side design strategy is developed, which involves the DFT guidance for the electronic transport criteria for the designable synthesis of KNb 3 O 8 fillers. Four different structural configurations are constructed, which are surface-modified with polydopamine (PDA) to fabricate the final composite films, i.e . PDA@KNb 3 O 8 /PVDF-P(VDF-HFP)-PMMA with particular orientations and arrangements, through a well-controlled solution casting method. Comprehensive structural and electrical investigations reveal that 1D/2D-orientated PDA@KNb 3 O 8 fillers could obviously enhance the breakdown field and energy storage performance. The difference is that the 1D fillers more effectively improve the energy efficiency (up to 72%), while the 2D fillers more steadily achieve high energy density ( U e = 28.35 J/cm 3 ) among the highest U e reported for the composites. This work not only uncovers the structural origin of the electrostatic storage in inorganic-polymer composite films but also provides critical insights in designing high-energy-density film capacitors.

In this study, bioactive composite hydrogels were created using the decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM), GelMA, and Polydopamine-loaded Asiaticoside (AC@PDA) nanoparticles for use as wound dressings that could promote healing. A decellularization method was used to obtain ECM from porcine Achilles tendon tissue. AC@PDA nanoparticles were then synthesized and found to have a uniform spherical structure with good cytocompatibility, particularly when compared to PDA nanoparticles alone. The mechanical properties of the bioactive composite hydrogels showed good elasticity and shape recovery after compression, with a slight decrease in compressive strength due to the addition of nanoparticles. The formation of interpenetrating networks through the use of EDC/NHS was also found to improve the mechanical properties and moisture retention of the hydrogels. The PDA/ECM-G and AC@PDA/ECM-G hydrogels showed higher water absorption capacity and similar moist retention capacity to the ECM-G hydrogel. The microstructure of the hydrogels was observed through SEM, with the ECM-G hydrogel showing a dense and compact structure, while the PDA/ECM-G and AC@PDA/ECM-G hydrogels displayed a more porous and interconnected structure due to the presence of nanoparticles. In vitro cytotoxicity tests on human skin fibroblasts showed good biocompatibility for all hydrogels. The in vivo wound healing performance of the hydrogels was also tested on a full-thickness excisional wound model in mice, with the AC@PDA/ECM-G hydrogel showing the fastest wound closure without scarring and the highest-formed hair follicles. The AC@PDA/ECM-G hydrogel had the best performance in promoting wound healing. These results suggest that the bioactive hydrogel has the potential for use as a wound dressing.

Concurrent treatment of tumor recurrence and bone defects after surgical resection of osteosarcoma remains a clinical challenge. Combination therapy based on local drug delivery systems shows great promise in the treatment of osteosarcoma. In this study, curcumin modified polydopamine nanoparticle loaded silk fibroin doped with nano-hydroxyapatite (CM-PDA/SF/nHA) nanofibrous scaffolds were developed to induce bone defect regeneration and chemo-photothermal synergistic effects against osteosarcoma. These scaffolds exhibited good photothermal conversion efficiency and photostability. Moreover, the results of ALP staining and alizarin red S (ARS) staining indicated that the CM-PDA/SF/1%nHA scaffolds had the most obvious promotion effect on early osteogenic differentiation. The results of in vitro and in vivo anti-osteosarcoma activity showed that the CM-PDA/SF/1%nHA scaffolds exhibited higher anti-osteosarcoma activity compared to the control and SF scaffolds. In addition, the CM-PDA/SF/1%nHA scaffolds could promote the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro and new bone production in vivo. Thus, these results suggested that the CM-PDA/SF/1%nHA scaffolds could improve bone defect regeneration and achieve chemo-photothermal synergistic effects against osteosarcoma.

Antimicrobial drugs are frequently used in a combination or shuttle way to cope with coinfection of bacteria or parasites and prevent drug resistance, thus the accurate quantification of multiple drug residues in animal-derived foods is crucial to ensure food safety. Here, a simple and efficient high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) method was established for the simultaneous quantitative screening of six common residues of antiparasitic drugs, including abamectin (ABM), ivermectin (IVM), albendazole (ABZ) and the three metabolites of ABZ in beef and chicken. The LODs and LOQs for six target compounds in beef and chicken are determined to be 3.2 to 12.5 µg/kg and 9.0 to 30.0 µg/kg, respectively. The calibration curves show good linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9990) between the peak area and concentration. The recoveries from the fortified blank samples are all above 85.10%. Finally, the applicability of the HPLC-PDA method is successfully demonstrated by the real sample analysis.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassays exhibiting high sensitivity and decent operability have considerable potential in areas such as cancer diagnostics. In particular, cathodic PEC configurations can prevent interference from reductive substances, which can occur in biological samples; however, challenges remain in terms of sensitivity and operability. In this study, separate-type PEC immunoassays were developed for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by combining microplate-based immune recognition and off–on cathodic PEC detection. Polydopamine (PDA)-coated Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles (PB@PDA NPs) were used as signal tags to label the detection antibody. The PB NPs and PDA captured on the microplates both disassembled under strongly alkaline conditions to generate redox-active electron acceptors . The disassembled products were quantitatively transferred to PEC detection cells and synergistically enhanced the PEC current with microstructured BiOI , which operated as a cathodic semiconductor electrode. As proof of principle, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was applied to elucidate the potential application of PEC immunoassay in clinical diagnosis, and the obtained linear range of the sensor was 0.001–100 ng mL −1 with the detection limit of 54.9 fg mL −1 (S/N = 3). The proposed separate-type off–on PEC strategy showed high sensitivity and decent operability for CEA detection, indicating its potential for the identification of other tumor markers.

Membrane separation technology has been increasingly applied owing to its high efficiency and low energy consumption during resource treatment. However, the development of eco-friendly membranes with high performance and long-term sustainability remains a challenge. To address this issue, we designed a three-dimensional (3D)-modified biopolymer-based membrane using renewable glucose and a zirconium-based metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF) for molecules/ions separation. The Zr-MOF and basal membrane were polymerized at the interface using natural glucose molecules and dopamine as bridging agents to form a 3D-integrated Zr-MOF–Glucose–Polydopamine (Zr-MOF–GP) composite membrane, serving as a “green” separation layer. The developed separation layer emerged additional molecular transport channels, rapid adsorption, ultrafast penetration of the solution on the surface and inside the Zr-MOF–GP composite membrane, and high molecular retention while achieving ultrahigh permeability. Moreover, the Zr-MOF–GP composite membrane exhibited excellent structural and long-term application stability in complex systems owing to the new chemical bonds formed between glucose and Zr-MOF and polydopamine substrate (synergistic effect). The experimental results demonstrated that the designed membrane exhibits superior desalination properties (99.8% Na 2 SO 4 retention while the water flux is 31.6 L/ m 2 ∙h∙bar), good removal of heavy metal ions (69.4% for 2000 ppm Pb 2+ ), and considerable organic solvent resistance (98.8% Rose Bengal retention while the N,N-dimethylformamide permeance is 15.6 L/ m 2 ∙h∙bar), and excellent antifouling performance. This high-performance and environment-friendly biopolymer-based composite membrane will inspire the further the development of sustainable membrane-separation technologies.

Gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) based immunochromatographic assay strip is a valuable tool for monitoring chemicals in foods. However, the sensitive ICA strip for SBT was rarely reported due to that monoclonal antibody (mAb) against SBT with high affinity was commercially unavailable. Herein, a monoclonal antibody against SBT was prepared through a designed hapten with a carboxylendcapped space arm. The obtained mAb showed high affinity for SBT and N-desmethylsibutramine, a metabolite of SBT. Furthermore, a series of core-shell NPs, polydopamine (PDA) coated AuNPs (PDA/AuNPs) with controlled shell thickness and packing density were synthesized. The obtained PDA/AuNPs-mAb conjugate demonstrated high tolerance to salt and good stability in a wide pH range, which is beneficial to improve the matrix interference common in ICA. As a result, PDA/AuNPs-based ICA could quantify SBT in the range of 3.39–69.60 ng mL-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.98 ng mL-1. This novel ICA improved the sensitivity of the traditional AuNPs based ICA by nearly 12 times. Method validation was conducted with spiked sample of slimming food and human serum, and compared with HPLC-MS/MS. Consistent results indicated a high sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability of the PDA/AuNPs based ICA approach was achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this study reported the most sensitive immunoassay for SBT thus far.

Digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing is suitable to fabricate bone scaffolds with small size and high precision. However, the published literature mainly deals with the fabrication procedure and parameters of DLP printed bioceramic scaffold, but lacks the subsequent systematic biological evaluations for bone regeneration application. In this work, a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) macroporous scaffold was constructed by DLP-based 3D printing technique. Furthermore, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) was facilely incorporated into this scaffold through a facile polydopamine (PDA) modification process. The resultant scaffold presents an interconnected porous structure with pore size of ∼570 μm, compressive strength (∼3.6 MPa), and the self-assembly Ca-P/PDA nanocoating exhibited excellent sustained-release property for BMP-2. Notably, this BMP-2/PDA-BCP scaffold presents favorable effects on the adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Furthermore, in vivo experiments conducted on rats demonstrated that the scaffolds could induce cell layer aggregation adjacent to the scaffolds and continuous new bone generation within the scaffold. Collectively, this work demonstrated that the BMP-2/PDA-BCP scaffold is of immense potential to treat small craniofacial bone defects in demand of high accuracy.

Currently, many cancer patients with bone defects are still threatened by tumor recurrence, postoperative bacterial infection, and massive bone loss. Many methods have been studied to endow bone implants with biocompatibility, but it is difficult to find an implant material that can simultaneously solve the problems of anticancer, antibacterial and bone promotion. Here, a multifunctional gelatin methacrylate/dopamine methacrylate adhesive hydrogel coating containing 2D black phosphorus (BP) nanoparticle protected by polydopamine (pBP) is prepared by photocrosslinking to modify the surface of poly (aryl ether nitrile ketone) containing phthalazinone (PPENK) implant. The multifunctional hydrogel coating works in conjunction with pBP, which can deliver drug through photothermal mediation and kill bacteria through photodynamic therapy at the initial phase followed by promotion of osteointegration. In this design, photothermal effect of pBP control the release of doxorubicin hydrochloride loaded via electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, pBP can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to eliminate bacterial infection under 808 nm laser. In the slow degradation process, pBP not only effectively consumes excess ROS and avoid apoptosis induced by ROS in normal cells, but also degrade into PO 4 3− to promote osteogenesis. In summary, nanocomposite hydrogel coatings provide a promising strategy for treatment of cancer patients with bone defects.

In recent years, smart hydrogels have been widely applied to various types of hydrogel actuators due to their unique stimulus responsibility, such as temperature responsiveness, near-infrared (NIR) light responsiveness, pH responsiveness, etc. Herein, segmented poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) based hydrogel actuators with both temperature and NIR light actuation behaviors were constructed. Polydopamine (PDA) was firstly used to modify MXene nanosheets to fabricate an efficient photothermal conversion material. Then they were added into PNIPAM matrix to prepare PDA@MXene/PNIPAM hydrogels. The prepared PDA@MXene/PNIPAM hydrogels exhibited three-dimensional network structure with the tensile strength of 26.84 kPa, and they were successfully assembled into segmented hydrogel actuators. The assembled segmented hydrogel actuator exhibited high bending angle of 470° in 1.75 s in 55 °C hot water and bending angle of 203° in 15 s when irradiated by 6 W/cm 2 NIR light. The segmented hydrogel actuators displayed good programmable actuation performance. Finally, they were applied as smart devices, such as hydrogel hook for grasping object, switch for controlling circuit and valve for governing fluid flow. This work provides a novel strategy for fabricating programmable hydrogel actuators and will inspire new ideas and constructions for smart soft hydrogel actuators.

A novel nanofiller-reinforced SLIPS is developed on AZ31 Mg alloys. • CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers enhance the corrosion resistance and self-healing properties of coatings. • Self-healing ability is due to rapid lubricant redistribution and passive film formation. • The coating shows better long-term corrosion protection than conventional SLIPSs. Conventional slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have emerged as an effective strategy to protect Mg alloys from corrosion. However, their anti-corrosion and self-healing performances remain insufficient for long-term service. Therefore, multifunctional CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN nanofillers were incorporated into liquid lubricant to fabricate nanofiller-reinforced SLIPSs (CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPSs). In particular, this study systematically investigated influences of nanofiller concentrations on surface morphology, hydrophobicity, and electrochemical behavior. CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, prepared at a concentration of 8 mg/mL, displayed the lowest corrosion current density (8.22 × 10 -11 A/cm 2 ) and the highest impedance modulus (9.06 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 at 0.01 Hz). This was ascribed to the synergistic effects of high surface hydrophobicity provided by a lubricant layer, tortuous diffusion pathways provided by h-BN nanosheets, ion-exchange property of MgAl-LDH, and active corrosion inhibition of CeO 2 . In addition, scanning vibration electrode technique (SVET) analysis confirmed good self-healing behavior of CeO 2 @PDA/h-BN-SLIPS-8, arising from both rapid lubricant redistribution and formation of protective cerium-based passive films. Overall, this study provides an effective strategy for fabrication of robust anti-corrosive and self-healing SLIPSs, offering enhanced corrosion protection for Mg alloys in industry.

Traditional water treatment membranes always face the problem of membrane contamination in the practical application. Those contaminants deposited on the membrane surface and inside the membrane pores make the filtration process more difficult. Herein, the temperature and photo sensitive nanocomposite membranes with superior wasterwater separation and light-cleaning capabilities were prepared by a non-solvent induced phase separation method, which combined the thermo-responsive property of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) grafted polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and the high photothermal conversion character of core–shell structured BN@PDA-Ag nanosheets. The membranes can be heated to high temperature within a short period of light exposure due to the fast photothermal conversion capability of Ag and the excellent thermal conductivity of boron nitride (BN). The increase in temperature led to the contraction of PNIPAAm chains and bigger pore size. The microstructure, filtration, and cleaning performance of the nanocomposite membranes can be controlled by illumination, which allowed PVDF-g-PNIPAAm/BN@PDA-Ag membranes to achieve the effect of first interception and then cleaning. The membranes showed retention rates of 82, 99 and 95 % for BSA, oil–water emulsions and various dyes with flux recovery rates of > 90 % after light cleaning. This work provides a simpler, more efficient membrane cleaning strategy with superior potential for dealing with membrane contamination.
