Developing anticorrosion epoxy composite coating based on PEG-gallic acid complex functionalized two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework nanosheets

Chenyang Zhao,Chen Wang,Yue Li,Wenlin Yuan,Yi Huang,Di Cheng,Tao Shen,Ji Zhang,Jie Liu,Libei Jiang,Chao Yang,Qianhong Shen,Hui Yang

Two-dimensional Metal-organic frameworks have recently emerged as promising materials for enhancing the anticorrosion protection performance of polymeric coatings. In this study, ZIF-ZG@PEG-GA nanofiller was synthesized by modifying zeolitic imidazolate framework nanosheets with a polyethylene glycol-gallic acid (PEG-GA) complex shell, and subsequently incorporated into waterborne epoxy matrix. Potentiodynamic polarization analysis revealed that the addition of ZIF-ZG@PEG-GA to a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution reduced the corrosion current density from 5.528×10 −6 A/cm 2 to 1.892 × 10 −6 A/cm 2 . Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed that ZGPG/EP exhibited superior protective performance after 42 d of immersion, with the highest |Z| f=0.01Hz (1.87 × 10 9  Ω·cm 2 ), R coat (4.27 × 10 8  Ω·cm 2 ), and R ct (1.43 × 10 9  Ω·cm 2 ). Furthermore, EIS analysis of scratched coatings demonstrated that ZIF-ZG@PEG-GA effectively impeded corrosion propagation and prevented further coating degradation. The enhanced anticorrosion performance is attributed to the passive protection by increasing the diffusion resistance of corrosive species, and the active protection through the release of gallic acid from the PEG-GA complex.

Engineering the electronic structure of Fe-MoO2@PEG to increase sonodynamic and multi-nanozyme activities for anticancer therapy

Rongrong Mu,Wenhui Song,Zili Li,Yuting Pan,Jingwei Liu,Fengyu Qu,Huiming Lin

Both sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and nanozymes can be considered specialized forms of catalysis, which are related to the electron structure. In this work, Fe doping was employed to introduce electronic localization and spin polarization toward porous MoO 2 nanospheres to improve the anticancer catalytic efficiency. All the Fe atoms are single-distributed to substitute for some lattice positions of Mo. Compared with MoO 2 @PEG, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG results in a 2.8-fold increase in ROS generation, which is attributed to spin polarization. This phenomenon enhances charge separation, increases conductivity, and promotes O₂ adsorption, thereby significantly improving the ROS production efficiency. Furthermore, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG also has superior mimic-catalase (CAT) activity (318,467 U g −1 ), which is even greater than that of natural catalase (220,834 U g −1 ). Compare with MoO 2 @PEG Fe doping increased the activity by 76.0 times because electron localization can decrease the free energy of the redox reaction. This novel CAT ability can convert endogenous H 2 O 2 into O 2 , alleviating tumor hypoxia and increasing ROS production. Notably, MoO₂/Fe@PEG also mimics GSH oxidase and NADPH oxidase (NOX) activities to consume GSH and restrain its regeneration at the same time, contributing to oxidative stress. The synergistic effects of SDT and multiple enzymes not only exhibit potent tumor inhibition but also elicit a robust immune response to prevent metastasis and recurrence.

Synergistic engineering of PEG-modified biomass-based polyester and forsythin for high-efficiency antibacterial air filtration nanofiber membranes

Xin Li,Yushuai Jiang,Desheng Yang,Yun Li,Zhihui Zhao,Longyin Wan,Xiaoming Li,Weichao Chen

A biomass-derived poly (2,5-furan dicarboxylate propanediol-block-polyethylene glycol) (PTF-b-PEG) copolyester is synthesized through incorporating flexible polyethylene glycol (PEG) segments into the PTF polymer backbone and its basic properties are tested. Electrospun nanofiber membrane with PTF-b-PEG displays improved hydrophilicity, superior flexibility (elongation at break ∼287.35 %), but achieve only 86.6 % air filtration efficiency due to its large fiber diameters (1.71 μm). To address this limitation, forsythin (FT) is introduced to simultaneously modulate the fiber diameters and impart antibacterial properties. The FT-modified nanofiber membranes show narrower diameters according to the amount of FT (0.48 μm for FT 10 @PTF-b-PEG as an example) and excellent ultrafine particulate matter (PM) capture. The membrane can achieve an ultrafine particle filtration efficiency of 99.92 % at a pressure drop of 72 Pa, with a quality factor of 0.09 Pa −1 .The antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) are 98.68 % and 99.76 %, respectively. Consequently, the FT-modified PTF-b-PEG membrane was used for the bioaerosol filtration, which not only intercepted but also killed the bacterial at the same time, thus avoiding any secondary contamination to the environment. The results indicate that the FT-modified PTF-b-PEG nanofiber membrane is a promising candidate for high-performance and antibacterial air purification.

Epoxidized soybean oil-based waterborne polyurethane coatings modified by PEG and gemini quaternary ammonium salt for antifouling applications

Yi Zhang,Xinglin Huang,Yuqing Li,Haiyang Zhang,Yezhong Chen,Jinlin Lu,Jianxin Li,Yansheng Yin

In order to alleviate the depletion of petrochemical resources and the resulting environmental pollution problems, it is becoming more and more important to find bio-based polymer materials that can partially or completely replace petrochemical resources. In this study, an epoxidized soybean oil-based antifouling polyols (ESO-PEG) coupled with brush-like anti-fouling polyethylene glycol on the side chain was prepared by epoxy ring opening reaction between epoxy soybean oil and polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Secondly, a kind of gemini quaternary ammonium salt antibacterial monomer containing a hydroxyl group (OHGQAS) was synthesized. A series of bio-based waterborne polyurethane coatings with both antifouling and antibacterial activities were synthesized by introducing prepared ESO-PEG and OHGQAS. Antibacterial and antifouling chains suspended on polyurethane side or end chains with good mobility. The effects of ESO-PEG and OHGQAS monomer on the particle size of waterborne polyurethane emulsion, bulk and surface structure, antibacterial and anti-fouling properties of waterborne polyurethane coatings were discussed. The results showed that the introduction of ESO-PEG improved the antifouling performance of polyurethane coatings (antibacterial ratio 96.68 %). In addition, after the introduction of OHGQAS into the structure of waterborne polyurethane, the antibacterial effect of the coating was further improved, that the antibacterial ratio of polyurethane coating with OHGQAS was as high as 99.99 %. These epoxy soybean oil-based waterborne polyurethane coatings hold great promise for antibacterial and antifouling applications.

Comparison of the efficacy of FITC-conjugated dextran, PEG, and HA as intraoperative navigation materials in pancreatic cancer

Xiao Zhou,Huali Huang,Lifeng Luo,Chenxi Cui,Hongmian Jiang

Pancreatic cancer, a highly aggressive solid tumor, presents multiple challenges in treatment. Although surgical resection is the primary treatment for early-stage non-metastatic cases, the deep abdominal location of the pancreas complicates precise intraoperative localization, adversely affecting surgical outcomes and patient prognosis. To address these clinical challenges, we aim to develop an innovative intraoperative navigation platform for precision tumor-targeted delivery. We systematically evaluated the tumor-targeting specificity and tissue-penetrating capacity of three hydrosoluble polymers, i.e., dextran, PEG, and HA, in pancreatic carcinoma models. The uptake kinetics of these materials in cancer cells and their penetration dynamics across complex tumor matrices were quantitatively evaluated via in vitro assays and three-dimensional tumor spheroid models. Complementary in vivo validation involved the use of PNAC-1 cell subcutaneous xenograft models to map the spatiotemporal distribution and tumoral accumulation of the lead candidates. Results demonstrated that dextran-FITC had a superior tumor-targeting performance, showing a significantly higher fluorescence intensity than PEG-FITC and HA-FITC. These preliminary data reveal significant heterogeneity in the intertumoral localization efficiency among the polymer carriers, establishing a mechanistic foundation for intraoperative navigation. Through rational optimization of carrier selection and delivery modalities, this platform aims to enhance surgical precision, minimize off-target effects, and ultimately improve clinical outcomes.

NIR Responsive Polymeric Prodrug Micelles ZnPc@P(PEG-CMA-TKGEM) for Combating Gemcitabine Drug Delivery in Anticancer Chemotherapy

Heng Zhang,Yiping Yang,Shengchao Yang,Yuchang Qin,Xuan Lv,Lin Cui,Wei Jia,Zhiyong Liu

The impact of encapsulating gemcitabine (GEM) into nanoparticles on its delivery remains underexplored, with the potential benefits of targeted drug delivery and stimuli-responsive release yet to be fully clarified. Herein, we designed a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive polymeric nanoparticle, ZnPc@P(PEG-CMA-TKGEM), which integrates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell imaging capabilities. The self-assembled polymeric micelles exhibit a hydrodynamic size of ~134 nm. Under NIR irradiation, the cumulative drug release rate reaches 51% within 48 h, which is three times higher than that of the non-irradiated control group. In cytotoxicity assays, the cell viability of the NIR-irradiated drug-loaded group is approximately 17%, while that of the NIR-irradiated blank group (without drug loading) remains above 80%. These results confirm that the nanocarriers successfully deliver GEM to target cells and achieve controlled drug release via NIR stimulation.

Probing the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules regulated by dibenzaldehyde-terminated-PEG with varying molecular weights in solution

Fengxian Ju,Lingyu Hua,Jing Xu,Tianduo Li,Tao Wei,Aijie Lv,Huan Yang

Rigid and fragile nature of collagen-based materials cross-linked with biocompatible aldehyde-functionalized polysaccharides remains a challenge. Drawing inspiration from the pangolins' protective barrier, we introduce a novel cross-linker with a flexible chain to impart a “rigid-flexible coupled structure” to the collagen-based matrix. Successful integration of dibenzaldehyde-terminated-PEG (DF-PEG) into collagen molecules was confirmed by XRD and FTIR analyses. CD measurements demonstrated that the intact triple-helical structure was preserved in all samples. Distinct effects of DF-PEG with varying molecular weights on the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules were evaluated using multiple quantitative analysis techniques. Specifically, when the molecular weight of DF-PEG was below 20,000, multipoint hydrogen bonds and Schiff-base linkages were produced as the molecular weight of DF-PEG increased, which synergistically enhanced the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules. While the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules was slightly diminished upon the molecular weight of DF-PEG reached 20,000. This reduction can be attributed to the limited accessibility of the molecular reactive sites in the extended DF-PEG chains. Finally, a computational test of the binding interactions between collagen molecules and DF-PEG was conducted to validate the experimental results. Our biomimetic design strategy offers a new approach for the preparation of collagen-based materials with exceptional physicochemical properties.

PEGlated graphene as nanoadditive for enhancing the tribological properties of water-based lubricants

Yiwen Hu,Yongxin Wang,Zhixiang Zeng,Haichao Zhao,Xuewu Ge,Kai Wang,Liping Wang,Qunji Xue

Dispersion of Graphene in water is conducive to their practical applications as lubricating additive in water-based fluids due to their safety, low cost and environmental-friendliness. But owing to its hydrophobicity , it is difficult to achieve stable aqueous graphene suspension. Here, we use the Toluene-2,4-diisocyanate as bridging agent between hydrophilic Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and ethanolamine to prepare the amino-containing PEG (PEG-NH 2 ), followed by covalently grafting PEG-NH 2 onto the surface of carboxylaed graphene (G-COOH) nanosheets to synthesize the PEGlated graphene (PEG-G) via facile amidation under mild conditions. The physical, chemical properties of product were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectra (FTIR), Raman spectra , X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) and so on. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning probe microscope (SPM) were utilized to observed the morphology of G-COOH and PEG-G. The frictional properties of PEG-G as nanoadditive of water-based lubricant were characterized by UMT-3 tribometer, following with analyzes on wear surfaces by 3D laser scanning confocal microscopy . Based on the results of characterization, the PEG-G was prepared successfully and the dispersion shows superior friction-reducing and anti-wear properties owing to the formation of fluid adhesive film and carbon protective film, especially the concentration of PEG-G in water is 0.05 wt%.

Synergistic Interaction between Saturated MgCl2–H2O/PEG Electrolyte and Mg Alloy Anode Enables High-Performance Aqueous Magnesium-Ion Batteries

Wendi Lai,Caixing Wang,Rui Fang,Kanghui Liu,Wei Yang,Guowang Diao,Yanrong Wang

Compared to conventional organic electrolytes, aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (AMIBs) have emerged as a research hotspot due to their superior safety, environmental compatibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, the further development of AMIBs has been impeded by their short cycling lifespan, primarily caused by the aqueous corrosion of Mg anodes in water-containing electrolytes, which generates inorganic passivation layers (e.g., Mg(OH)2 and MgO) on the anode surface. To address this challenge, we propose a collaborative two-pronged approach, involving the adoption of a novel electrolyte system (saturated MgCl2 aqueous solution containing 25 vol % PEG, SMP-3) and the use of a Mg alloy anode. Electrochemical investigations suggest that the PEG molecules form hydrogen bonds with H2O molecules, effectively suppressing water activity and thereby enhancing anode stability. The assembled PTO/Mg alloy full cell exhibited a stable discharge plateau at 1.5 V with an initial discharge capacity of 176.24 mAh g–1 at 200 mA g–1. Remarkably, the cell demonstrated exceptional cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 150 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles (85% capacity retention), with an average Coulombic efficiency approaching 100%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of stabilizing Mg alloy anodes through an interfacial engineering strategy based on a water-in-salt electrolyte design. This strategic approach provides a novel pathway for developing low-cost, high-performance AMIBs.

Electrocatalytic Self-Sterilizing PEG@Mn-Ti3C2Tx MXene Biosensor with Dual Antifouling Capability for Ultrasensitive Detection of Cardiac Troponin I

Meiling Lian,Haoquan Wang,Liuxing Chen,Da Chen,Qi Yang,Xuezhi Qiao

Electrochemical sensing devices often suffer from biofouling due to nonspecific adsorption of biomolecules and microorganisms in complex biological matrices. To address this challenge, we developed an efficient antifouling and self-sterilizing sensing interface by grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) onto two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets for the accurate detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a gold-standard biomarker for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The Mn 2+ -intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x (Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) exhibited enhanced electrochemical activity in a three-electron oxygen reduction reaction (3e - ORR), enabling in situ self-sterilization by activating molecular oxygen to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which demonstrated potent antibacterial effects against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Mn doping in MXene significantly reduced the free energy barrier of *OOH intermediate, promoting H 2 O 2 formation and subsequent reduction to •OH. The PEGylated Mn-Ti 3 C 2 (PEG@Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) composite combined the superior hydrophilicity of PEG for effective protein repulsion with the enhanced conductivity of Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x , enabling sensitive biosensing. Critically, the fabricated biosensor demonstrated high specificity for cTnI against common interferents and achieved reliable detection in spiked serum samples. It exhibited a broad detection range from 0.1   pg   mL -1 to 500   ng   mL -1 with an ultralow limit of 0.03   pg   mL -1 . This work presents a novel strategy for combating biofouling and paves the way for designing robust biosensors capable of accurate and long-term operation in clinically relevant environments, holding great promise for point-of-care diagnostics.

“Corn-like” APT@UiO-66-NH₂/PEG composite membrane with excellent anti-fouling performance for oil/water emulsions separation

Ruirui Jin,Jingling Gong,Zhaoyang Li,Bin Xiang,Weimin Liu,Jian Li

The increase in oily wastewater exacerbates global water scarcity, triggering ecological damage and health risks. Although membrane separation technology was widely adopted in oily wastewater treatment due to its high efficiency and energy savings, membrane fouling issues lead to flux decline, increased energy consumption, and reduced membrane lifespan, thereby limiting its application. Therefore, this study proposed an advanced “water absorption-storage” strategy by in-situ growing UiO-66-NH₂ nanoparticles on attapulgite (APT) through carefully designed micro-nano-scale rough structures and chemical interactions, forming a unique biomimetic “corn-like” structure. The APT@UiO-66-NH₂/PEG composite membrane prepared in this study establishes a robust hydration barrier through synergistic interactions between its components, thereby exhibiting both outstanding anti-oil fouling capability and highly efficient, stable oil-water emulsion separation performance. Meanwhile, the in-situ growth of UiO-66-NH₂ on APT effectively resolved the issue of easy detachment between APT and UiO-66-NH₂. Moreover, the abundant hydrophilic functional groups (–OH) in polyethylene glycol (PEG) form hydrogen bonds with UiO-66-NH₂ and APT, further enhancing the structural stability. The obtained APT@UiO-66-NH₂/PEG composite membrane achieved separation efficiencies exceeding 99.8 % for various oil-in-water emulsions, with a separation flux reaching 3020 LMH/bar. After 10 separation cycles and 60 min of continuous operation, the separation performance remained essentially stable. The composite membrane demonstrated excellent chemical durability and mechanical stability in high-concentration acid, alkali, and salt solutions, as well as during bending and abrasion tests. Therefore, this study presents a simple and effective purification solution for practical oily wastewater, with the associated strategies and preparation techniques demonstrating broad application prospects.
