Background: We previously designed an electrospinning chitosan (CS) nanofiber-based carrier, using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an adjuvant to deliver doxorubicin (DOX) and MoS2nanosheets for postoperative tumor re-occurrence inhibition. However, owing to that the nanofibrous mat is un-injectable, this composite nanofiber is far from being clinically applicable. Materials and Methods: Via modulating the electrospray parameters, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) beads string doped with DOX and MoS2(PVA/MoS2/DOX microspheres) were prepared, which were further crosslinked with glutaraldehyde to obtain the water-stability. Results: Under the 808-nm laser irradiation, MoS2nanosheets rendered the prepared PVA/MoS2/DOX microspheres an excellent light-to-heat conversion performance with η of 23.2%. Besides, the heat generated by near-infrared laser irradiation can improve the effect of chemotherapy by promoting the release rate of DOX. HT29 cell and tumor-bearing nude mice were used to systematically study the combined tumor treatment efficiency of composite nanospheres. Conclusion: PVA/MoS2/DOX nanospheres have excellent photothermal effect and chemotherapy effect, which can completely suppress the tumor recurrence. Therefore, the PVA/MoS2/DOX nanospheres are anticipated to find potential applications in the treatment of local colorectal cancer. Keywords:electrospinning;nanospheres;chemotherapy;photothermal tumor therapy;colorectal cancer

Aluminum phosphate (AP) shows great potential to replace formaldehyde-based adhesives in the wood industry, except for its weak hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength. This study chose PVA as an AP modifier to prepare a PVA–AP organic–inorganic hybrid adhesive (PAP). The preparation, bonding mechanism and heat resistant property of PAP were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that covalent bonds between PVA and AP were built. The mechanical properties of PAP improved remarkably; the dry and wet bonding strength are 2.28 and 0.79 MPa with 15.2% and 690% increment, respectively, compared to the control samples. The thermostabilities of PAP and plywood samples were improved. In conclusion, PVA could effectively improve the hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength of AP adhesives.

Rewritable paper exhibits the potential to replace conventional paper due to its reusable properties. However, compared to conventional paper, rewritable paper can fade, making it impossible to store information stably for a long time in a daily environment, which limits its application. Here, a series of photochromic gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composited films containing polyoxometalate were prepared. The addition of PVA had a significant effect on the mechanical, transparent, photochromic and fading properties of the film. The addition of PVA significantly inhibited the fading process of the film after photochromism. This was due to the increase of crosslink density in the film and the existence of hydrogen bonding between PVA and inorganic photochromic ammonium molybdate. Despite this, the film was able to achieve complete fading in 1.5 days in a humid environment and the fading time could be further accelerated to 2 h by heating. This film could display information stably over a long time while being rewritable. It was expected that this simple and effective design strategy is conducive to the development of a new generation of rewritable paper.

Developing hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and functions is important and challenging. Herein, commercial available materials, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and agar, are used to synthesize ultra-strong, self-healable and conductive hydrogels by freezing-thawing cycles and soaking in the ammonium sulfate (AS) solution. The relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties of the obtained PVA-Agar hydrogel is analyzed. The results show that the tensile stress and toughness of PVA-Agar precursor hydrogel are only 0.2 MPa and 0.3 MJ/m 3 , respectively, due to the uneven network with a pore size between 1 and 8 μm and the lower crosslink density of network. After soaking in AS solution, the network becomes dense and uniform with a pore size of 1–3 μm, accompanied by the formation of stronger hydrogen bonds between PVA and agar. As a result, the tensile stress and toughness increase to 18.0 MPa and 42.3 MJ/m 3 , respectively. Due to the efficient energy dissipation mechanism endowed by dynamic junctions, the hydrogel also has good anti-fatigue property and high self-healing efficiencies (>80%), and the dissipative energy can reach 18.5 MJ/m 3 , which accounts for 94.9% of the total energy. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibits electrical conductivity. The full-fledged starting materials, PVA and agar, and easy-operated process, freeze/thaw cycle, provide our method great potentials to scale up and promising applications as a biocompatible and bioactive material.

Fluorescence of carbon dots (CDs) has grown well for substantial applications, but the long-lived photoluminescence, such as room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), still catch less attention due to the serious deactivation of triplets under ambient conditions, leading to extremely low radiative efficiency. Herein, we simultaneously achieved both of them by incorporating CDs into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with the assistance of electrospinning technology. Through systematic investigation, ordered mesoporous structure from the electrospun CDs/PVA nanofibers can effectively stabilize the triplet states of CDs , thus enabling the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process for TADF and realizing the first example in CDs/polymer system. RTP is closely related to the triplet excited states of the carbonyls located at the surface of CDs and PVA molecule can rigidify these groups with hydrogen bonds, which can prevent quenching from atmospheric oxygen to promote the RTP and TADF behaviors in the air atmosphere. The afterglow spectrum of these nanofibers exhibits dual emission centered at 456 nm and 569 nm, originated from TADF and RTP, respectively. By changing the excitation wavelength or by adjusting the temperature of measurement, the color of the photoluminescence (PL) can be systematically tailored, the white-light emitting is promising. Moreover, these nanofibers show a long average afterglow lifetime of 1.61 s with visually recognizable period of 9 s. Moreover, CDs/PVA composites (nanofibers, solution, film, and aerogel) demonstrate potentialities in optical imaging, writing, anti-counterfeiting, temperature sensing.

Anion exchange membrane (AEMs) fouling is a serious problem influencing membrane performance during electrodialysis process(ED), which would increase power consumption and reduce water recovery. In this paper, an aliphatic anion-exchange membrane was prepared from quaternized polyvinyl alcohol (QPVA) via dual cross-linking through annealing treatment and condensation reaction to restrain the membrane water swelling. The Wu% of QPVA membrane could be reduced to 22.87 ± 0.81%. Due to the hydrophilia (59.86 ± 0.21°), negative ζ-potential surface and aliphatic matrix of QPVA, no transition time appeared under our experiment condition, indicating the QPVA membrane was scarcely fouled by SDBS . And the existence of SDBS in dilute solution generated slightly effect on the QPVA membrane resistance and only 7.47 ± 0.21% reduction of the desalination rate in ED process. Furthermore, only distilled water was used as solution or reaction media, without any harmful organic solvents , presenting an environmentally friendly route for the preparation of water-based anion-exchange membrane. So, the excellent anti-fouling performance along with green preparation of QPVA showed its remarkable prospect for desalination purpose in ED process.

Flexible and nonpoisonous X-ray-shielding membranes supported by bacterial cellulose (BC) were prepared, in which X-ray-shielding materials were of microcapsule structure by using polyvinyl alcohol as shell and lead salt as core. The effect of the wall/core interaction and the amount of cross-linking agent were taken into consideration to find the optimal reaction conditions. The morphology, microcapsule size, and lead salt release properties were investigated. After supported by BC, the flexible and potable membranes for X-ray radiation protection were prepared and the shielding properties were evaluated, which indicated a good X-ray-shielding material. We set up a new method to prepare flexible and portable X-ray radiation protection membranes. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43120.

Poly(ethylene- co -polyvinyl alcohol) (PVA- co -PE) nanofiber membrane with abundant active hydroxyl groups on the surface was modified through a solid-phase synthesis process. The PVA- co -PE nanofibers with different average diameters ranging from 200 to 500 nm were modified by cyanuric chloride and 1, 3-propanediamine. The aminated PVA- co -PE nanofiber membrane was subsequently biotinylated and then horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was successfully immobilized onto it. The morphologies, hydrophilicity and chemical structures of membranes surface were investigated by SEM, water contact angle, FTIR and XPS. The HRP-immobilized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membrane revealed high activity, efficiency, sensitivity and reusability when it was used to catalyze the luminol-H 2 O 2 reaction. The results demonstrated that the HRP-immobilized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membrane could be a promising candidate as solid support materials for catalysis of Luminol-H 2 O 2 . The relative light unit (RLU) could run up to 5 × 10 5 when the H 2 O 2 concentration was low to 1 × 10 −15 mol/L. The HRP-immobilized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membrane was the potential chemiluminescence biosensor which could be applied in biological, medical and food fields.

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol- co -ethylene) (PVA- co -PE) nanofibrous membrane was activated by sodium hydroxide and cyanuric chloride, and then the activated membranes were functionalized by 1,3-propanediamine, hexamethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine to be affinity membranes for bilirubin removal, respectively. The chemical structures and morphologies of membranes were investigated by SEM, FTIR and XPS. And the adsorption ability of different amine-functionalized nanofibrous membranes for bilirubin was characterized. Furthermore, the effects of temperature, initial concentration of bilirubin, NaCl concentration and BSA concentration on the adsorption capacity for bilirubin of diethylenetriamine-functionalized nanofibrous membrane were studied. Results indicated that the adsorption capacity for bilirubin of diethylenetriamine-functionalized nanofibrous membrane could reach 85 mg/g membrane when the initial bilirubin concentration was 200 mg/L while the adsorption capacity could be increased to 110 mg/g membrane if the initial bilirubin concentration was more than 400 mg/L. The dynamic adsorption of diethylenetriamine-functionalized nanofibrous membrane showed that the ligands of amine groups on the membrane surface could be used as far as possible by recirculating the plasma with certain flow rates. Therefore, the diethylenetriamine-functionalized PVA- co -PE nanofibrous membrane possessed high adsorption capacity for bilirubin and it can be candidate as affinity membrane for bilirubin removal.

Addressing the issues of poor mechanical properties, high hysteresis, low conductivity, and weak fatigue resistance in hydrogels is key to expanding their use as flexible sensors. Herein, green raw materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl chitosan, citric acid and sodium chloride were used to prepare high conductivity, low hysteresis, high toughness, recyclable hydrogels (PCCN) by regional crystallization and construction of multiple cross-linked network structures. The tensile strength, tensile strain and toughness of PCCN hydrogel reached 0.49 MPa, 481 % and 0.81 MJ/m 3 respectively. The PCCN hydrogel showed low hysteresis and high conductivity (4.96 S/m) in tests, and the PCCN-4 hydrogel was able to detect signals in different parts of the human body. When the PCCN-4 is assembled into the TENG as a charge collecting layer, it can output a voltage of about 100 V and be prepared as a self-powered sensor. Interestingly, by integrating the highly conductive, flexible and sensitive PCCN hydrogel strain sensor with a Bluetooth system, a wireless wearable sensor for health monitoring can be created. The work presented in this paper is expected to provide new approach to developing eco-friendly, flexible, and sensitive hydrogel-based sensors.

Solar steam generation (SSG) via interfacial photothermal conversion has emerged in sustainable seawater desalination and sewage purification. One of the grand challenges is that low light absorption generally limits photothermal materials on water evaporation rates and insufficient on-board performance for real practice. Herein, we propose a “molecular/phase dual-locking” strategy to homogeneously composite Magnéli phases like Ti 4 O 7 nanoparticles and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by chemical-physical bi-crosslinking. As-obtained Ti 4 O 7 -PVA nanocomposite hydrogels (TPNHs) exhibit a narrow bandgap (~0.81 eV) for highly efficient sunlight absorption all through UV–vis–NIR full-spectrum wavelengths (up to ~99.56 %) and enable a record high evaporation rate of ∼4.45 kg m −2 h −1 with outstanding energy efficiency (~90.69 %) under one sun irradiation. A 20−day continuous test in real seawater manifests excellent long-term performance stability of TPNHs without salt accumulation. We further demonstrate the SSG efficacy of such hydrogels by applying them for efficient desalination/purification of varying seawater and sewage samples with low-to-high salinity, strong acids/bases, heavy metal ions, and organic dyes. This “molecular/phase dual-locking” design strategy and resultant Ti 4 O 7 -PVA nanocomposite hydrogels present a promising methodology to boost practical applications for seawater desalination and sewage purification.

High hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface results in adsorption of oil droplets and membrane fouling . A hydrogel coating with crosslinking network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), pyrogallol (PG) and Fe(III) based on PVDF membrane was proposed. Hydrogen bonds between PVA and PG in water were regulated by ethanol to form a uniform hydrophilic hydrogel coating on PVDF membrane. Chelation between PG and Fe 3+ significantly enhanced hydrogel adhesion. The surface energy of the developed PVDF-PVA/PG-Fe 3+ membrane was 39.96 mJ·m −2 , 2.71 times that of the pristine PVDF membrane, while its adhesion to oil is close to 0 μN. The permeate flux reached 1341 L·m −2 · h −1 at 0.1 bar for separating isooctane-in-water emulsions with good separation efficiency (>99 %) and cycling stability. The developed membrane could also effectively separate petroleum ether-in-water and dodecane-in-water emulsions.
