● Core-sheath nanofibers fabricated via batch coaxial electrospinning. ● Polarization-induced band bending regulates MOF/Pt interface. ● PVDF piezopotential drives directional interfacial charge separation. ● Photo-piezo coupling enhances H 2 O 2 production. ● Multiscale evidence supports polarization-mediated charge regulation. Regulating interfacial charge separation and oxygen reduction process in heterogeneous nanostructures remains a fundamental challenge for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) generation. Herein, we construct a spatially organized core-sheath nanofibrous architecture composed of a piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) core and a UiO-66-NH 2 (Hf)/platinum (Pt) functionalized sheath, enabling dynamic modulation of interfacial band alignment under coupled mechanical and photoexcitation. Strain-induced polarization within the PVDF core generates a transient internal electric field that cooperates with photogenerated charge carriers in the metal-organic framework (MOF)/Pt sheath, thereby favoring interfacial charge separation and Pt-assisted electron trapping while suppressing charge recombination. Comprehensive electrochemical analysis, valence band spectroscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, electron spin resonance, and finite element simulations consistently reveal that polarization-mediated band bending facilitates electron extraction across the MOF/Pt interface and promotes a hydrogen-peroxide-oriented oxygen reduction process. Under simultaneous light irradiation and mechanical stimulation, the optimized membrane achieves enhanced hydrogen peroxide production of approximately 90 μM within 120 min, together with efficient degradation of representative organic pollutants. By coupling batch-controllable structural fabrication with polarization-mediated interfacial electronic regulation, this study provides a reproducible core-sheath platform and mechanistic insight into polarization-regulated oxygen reduction in composite nanofibrous membranes. Supercapacitors are high-power-density energy storage devices essential for applications requiring rapid energy delivery. However, their practical implementation is often hindered by significant self-discharge. Functional separators capable of regulating ion transport offer an effective strategy to mitigate self-discharge without compromising electrochemical performance. In this work, a functional binary piezoelectric membrane based on cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is fabricated via electrospinning and employed as a high-performance separator. The electrospun PVDF matrix provides intrinsic piezoelectricity, enabling the modulation of ion flux via a built-in electric field. Meanwhile the incorporation of CA significantly enhances electrolyte affinity, liquid uptake, and mechanical integrity. Benefiting from high porosity, and strong polarity, the separator delivers outstanding electrochemical performance in solid-state supercapacitors, achieving a high specific capacitance of 194.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 with over 10,000 stable cycles. Crucially, the functional separator effectively suppresses the self-discharge rate to ~18.7 mV h −1 and retains 44% of the initial voltage after 24 h, which is an approximately 28% improvement in charge retention over the commercial separator. This work demonstrates that electrospun piezoelectric CA/PVDF composite membranes are promising functional separators for next-generation supercapacitors with low self-discharge.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers hold great
promise
for self-powered sensing and energy harvesting. However, simultaneously
achieving high piezoelectric charge and voltage coefficients and a
high electromechanical figure of merit remains challenging because
charge generation, voltage output, and dielectric response are intrinsically
coupled. Herein, we report a synergistic strategy that integrates
negative-polarity electrospinning with grid-controlled corona poling
to jointly amplify charge and voltage responses in PVDF nanofibrous
membranes. Negative-polarity electrospinning was associated with a
higher relative β-phase fraction of 96.28% without markedly
changing the overall crystallinity, together with polarity-dependent
differences in the near-surface chemical environment. Combined structural,
surface-chemical, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric analyses
suggest that these pre-existing features may influence the subsequent
corona-poling response. The enhanced response is discussed within
a proposed preconstruction–activation framework, in which corona
poling may further align polar domains and introduce charge-related
polarization states. Consistent with the proposed coupling between
crystal polarization and near-surface charge-related effects, the
optimized PVDF(−15) membrane delivers an ultrahigh apparent d 33,eff of 264.4 ± 7.9 pC/N, a calculated
effective g 33 of 7.337 V·m/N, and
a calculated effective FOM of 1.9399 × 10 –9 m 2 /N. The resulting device further exhibits high voltage
sensitivity to subtle dynamic mechanical stimuli and excellent long-term
fatigue resistance, highlighting its potential for diverse self-powered
sensing applications. This work identifies electrospinning polarity
as a useful processing variable for tuning the device-level electromechanical
response of PVDF nanofibrous membranes.

A semi-exposed structured PVDF-TiO 2 coating is designed via a facile spraying strategy. • A coating with bidirectional selective emulsion separation has been reported. • The coating exhibits excellent antibacterial properties. • Multifunctionality is exhibited by the prepared coating. In view of the intensified pollution of oily wastewater caused by industrialization and urbanization, as well as the separation challenges posed by the coexistence of stable oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, this paper proposes a multifunctional coating solution integrating bidirectional emulsion separation and antibacterial properties to address the problems of single function and susceptibility to microbial contamination in existing separation materials. Through a stepwise spraying strategy, a novel PVDF-TiO 2 semi-exposed composite coating was constructed. In this design, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) serves as both the film-forming substrate and a binder, immobilizing TiO 2 nanoparticles to form a micro-nano rough structure. By controlling the process, TiO 2 is semi-embedded on the PVDF surface, endowing the coating with superhydrophilicity and superoleophilicity, thereby achieving unique bidirectional wetting behavior characterized by underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity. Experimental results demonstrate that the coating not only efficiently separates O/W and W/O emulsions (separation efficiency >99 %) but also rapidly treats immiscible oil/water mixtures (with a flux as high as 5.6 × 10 4 L·m -2 ·h -1 and efficiency >98 %). Simultaneously, the exposed TiO 2 imparts photocatalytic self-cleaning ability and long-lasting antibacterial activity to the coating, effectively addressing the issue of membrane fouling. Furthermore, the coating features a simple preparation process, environmentally friendly raw materials, broad substrate adaptability, and exhibits remarkable mechanical durability. This study achieves functional synergy and complementary advantages between the film-forming property of PVDF and the functionality of TiO 2 through the semi-exposed structure, offering a novel strategy for developing multifunctional separation materials for the treatment of complex oily wastewater. Despite their mechanical robustness and high-voltage stability, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solid polymer electrolytes are hindered by sluggish Li + transport, stemming from anion-dominated conduction and residual solvent-induced interfacial degradation. This study addresses these issues by introducing zinc borate (ZB) as a filler into the PVDF electrolyte and preparing the composite electrolyte PVZB, thereby reconstructing the lithium-ion solvation structure and stabilizing the electrode interface, elevating the Li + transference number to 0.49, and boosting room-temperature ionic conductivity to 3.3 × 10 −4 S cm −1 . Crucially, a rich inorganic solid electrolyte interphase enables stable cycling of Li/PVZB/Li cells for 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . NCM811/PVZB/Li cells deliver 78.5% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 4.3 V with excellent Coulombic efficiency (99.2%). Graphical A dual-enhancement strategy for PVDF electrolytes is achieved by zinc borate, which simultaneously reconstructs the Li + solvation structure and drives the formation of an inorganic-rich SEI.

Conventional Seawater desalination membrane distillation technology suffers from reduced efficiency due to temperature polarisation, severely limiting its practical application. To address this challenge, this study employs surface grafting modification of MXene with HTEOS to fabricate MXene-based composite membranes with hydrophobic properties. The composite membrane exhibits outstanding Joule heating response under DC voltage, demonstrating excellent cycling stability with the cycle-to-cycle peak-temperature fluctuation remained below 2.6% over 20 on/off cycles. Building upon this, a novel in-situ heating-enhanced sweep gas membrane distillation (SGMD) system was established to investigate the influence of operating parameters—including gas flow rate—and in-situ heating on transmembrane permeation flux. Experimental results indicate that the optimum MXene-to-HTEOS hydrolysate volume ratio was 10:2, yielding a water contact angle of 145.0 °. Compared with the PVDF membrane without Joule heating, the maximum flux enhancement of MXene-P@PVDF membrane reached 134.4% at a gas flow rate of 0.1 m 3 ·h −1 under 10 V. At a feed temperature of 40℃, a gas flow rate of 0.3 m 3 ·h −1 , and a liquid flow rate of 10 mL·min −1 , the permeation flux increased from 0.793 to 1.827 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . This substantially improves MD efficiency while mitigating temperature polarisation effects.

Enhancing the combustion efficiency of aluminum (Al) is a crucial research direction for solid propellants. Constructing an efficient fuel-oxidizer interaction environment through interfacial regulation is an effective approach. In this work, a synergistic strategy integrating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-mediated interface regulation with core-shell structuring was adopted to fabricate a dual-layer core-shell Al@PVDF@HMX composite energetic materials (EMs). This composite exhibits an ultra-high heat of explosion (8416.8 J·g⁻¹), which is over 52.8% higher than that of the Al+HMX physical mixture. Explosion residue measurements show that the primary combustion products were AlN and Al₂O₃, and no large Al agglomerations were detected, meaning that the inhibition of Al particle agglomeration by the dual-layer core-shell structure and the shell-breaking combustion effect induced by PVDF should be the key factors for the heat of explosion enhancement. Simultaneously, it was demonstrated that the composite is superior safety to HMX, as its impact sensitivity (8%) and friction sensitivity (36%) are decreased by 91% and 64%, respectively. This work indicates that the dual-layer core-shell structured Al@PVDF@HMX can synergistically improve the reaction between Al and HMX, providing a new approach to improve the energy efficiency and safety of EMs.

Electrochromic devices have emerged as promising candidates for non-emissive displays due to their particular photoelectric performance in complex lighting environments. They exhibit considerable potential in emerging fields such as Internet of Things terminals, flexible wearables and human–computer interaction interfaces. In this study, we developed a low-power electrochromic display based on a Pt/FTO (Fluorine doped tin oxide) electrocatalytic counter electrode and a Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) porous gel electrolyte. The Pt catalyst enhances Br−/Br3−redox reactivity, which reduces the driving voltage from 2 V to 1 V, and accelerates the electrode reaction kinetics. It is systematically explained by the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical characterization. Furthermore, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept multicolor display incorporating the electrocatalytic counter electrode with various viologen derivatives. This approach provides a significant advancement toward next-generation high-performance displays and is supportive of the development of energy-efficient optoelectronic devices.

Membrane wetting remains one of the major challenges in membrane distillation (MD), limiting its further application. Herein, this study reported a novel layered double hydroxides (LDHs) composite membrane fabricated combining the hydrothermal synthesis and coating methods. This approach facilitated the in-situ nucleation and growth of the micro-nano hierarchical MgAl-LDHs nanoflowers on dopamine-treated PVDF substrate. Then, the further fluorination was conducted by the 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDS). By comprehensive characterization, including surface structure, wettability and MD performance, the superhydrophobic MLDH@PVDF composite membrane exhibited water contact angle of 160.1 ± 0.37° and slide angle of 4.67°. These results were achieved through the integration of the micro-nano LDHs architecture with the PFDS coating, thereby ensuring a stable Cassie-Baxter state. The modified membrane was applied for membrane distillation desalination, achieving the average MD flux of 32.79 kg m −2 h −1 and 23.55 kg m −2 h −1 when treating 0.6 M and 3 M NaCl solution, respectively. Especially, the feed saline can be concentrated to 4.01 M, demonstrating its excellent tolerance to a wide salinity range. Moreover, when the feed saline containing 200 ppm humic acid or n-Hexane, the prepared composite membrane kept relatively stable flux without wetting happening. These findings demonstrated that this hierarchical flower-like LDH structure endows the PVDF membrane with robust anti-wetting properties, enabling stable MD performance even in challenging environments of saline water containing humic acid.

Wastewater treatment represents a critical challenge in environmental protection, with the effective separation of oil-in-water emulsions being a pivotal step toward sustainable water management. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) holds great promise for emulsion separation due to its excellent chemical stability. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of PVDF often leads to severe oil fouling and compromised performance. In this study, we addressed this limitation by employing tannic acid (TA) as a hydrophilic modifier to construct a TA-Co 2+ coordinated network integrated with a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) through layer-by-layer self-assembly on a PVDF substrate. The resulting CTZ@PVDF membrane exhibited hydrophilic properties with a water contact angle of approximately 8°, coupled with underwater superhydrophobicity with underwater oil contact angle ≈ 170° and strong resistance to oil adhesion. The CTZ@PVDF membrane demonstrated high efficiency in separating various oils, including kerosene, gasoline, soybean oil, and diverse organic solvents, achieving oil rejection rates exceeding 98% for both surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Furthermore, after 10 separation cycles, the membrane maintained excellent separation efficiency, and its separation flux recovery rate (FRR) could be restored to over 96% of the initial value through simple cleaning. These results showed a substantial enhancement in hydrophilicity and separation performance compared to the unmodified PVDF membrane. The developed strategy not only provided an effective pathway for designing advanced wettability-controlled materials but also offered broad potential for the treatment of oily wastewater and complex emulsion separations.

Conventional hemodialysis membranes suffer from limited toxin adsorption capacity and poor biocompatibility. This study proposes a novel strategy to fabricate high-performance composite membranes by incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-modified Zr-melamine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. PVP acts as a crucial mediator, mitigating MOF agglomeration via steric hindrance and optimizing the membrane's pore structure for enhanced mass transfer. Comprehensive evaluations revealed that the membrane with an optimal PVP dosage (M3) achieved superior simulated hemodialysis performance, with clearance rates of 94.36% for creatinine and 86.37% for urea, significantly outperforming commercial equivalents. Furthermore, the M3 membrane demonstrated robust antifouling properties (stable water flux > 98 L/(m²·h) after 5 cycles), high bovine serum albumin (BSA) retention (98.01%), and excellent biosafety profiles, including low hemolysis (∼13.35%) and negligible Zr/melamine leaching. This work elucidates the structure-performance relationship of PVP-mediated MOF/polymer composites, offering a promising, biocompatible candidate for advanced uremic toxin clearance and long-term hemodialysis therapy.

Abstract Hydrophilic modification is widely used to improve the permeability and antifouling properties of PVDF membranes. However, introducing flexible hydrophilic segments significantly reduces the membrane’s resistance to deformation. To address this contradiction, a mature amphiphilic copolymer─fluoride-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PVDF-g-PEGMA)─was used as the hydrophilic component, while a multiarm rigid polystyrene (referred to as Star-PS) was introduced as a structural regulator. With the increase in Star-PS content, the average pore size and porosity first increased and then decreased. At the optimal Star-PS content of 0.5 g, M2 exhibited the largest average pore size of 67.4 nm and the highest porosity of 75.1%; while when the content increased to 0.8 g, these values decreased to 59.8 nm and 71.3%, respectively. During the nonsolvent-induced phase separation process, Star-PS undergoes local aggregation and microphase separation, forming microspheres rich in polystyrene (PS), with an apparent equivalent diameter of approximately 250–350 nm. These retained rigid microregions can regulate the evolution process of the polymer-rich and polymer-poor phases, promote the growth and connection of finger-like channels, and limit the deformation of the surrounding polymer matrix. However, excessive Star-PS will increase the viscosity of the casting solution and delay phase separation, thereby partially inhibiting pore formation. Therefore, M2 achieved a pure water flux of 556.4 L/(m2·h), a sodium alginate (SA) retention rate of 86.72%, and a flux recovery rate of 77.4%. Compared with M0, its hardness, elastic modulus, and storage modulus increased from 1.6, 25.34, and 24.84 MPa to 9.5, 125.82, and 35.9 MPa, respectively. Thus, the contribution of this study lies in the use of the in situ formed rigid microregions of Star-PS to compensate for the mechanical performance degradation caused by hydrophilic modification, while maintaining good permeability and antifouling properties.
