Chitosan bead grafted by third-generation dendrimers (CB-G3) with a diameter of 1.40 mm was synthesized to investigate their performance in recovering Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions in aqueous media. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, elemental analysis, TGA , and SEM, and the effects of pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature were examined. The results showed that the adsorbents were successfully fabricated. The optimum pH value was 5, and the increased generation number contributed to adsorption capacity improvement, indicating that electrostatic interactions between amine groups and metal ions are the governing mechanism of adsorption by the CB-G3. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption onto the CB-G3 were investigated. The adsorption processes can be described using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were 105.62, 88.82, and 97.87 mg·g −1 for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) at 30 °C within 210 min, respectively. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds are the main mechanisms between metal ions and N atoms. Therefore, the CB-G3 is a promising candidate for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption owing to its splendid ability in easy separation, good adsorptivity, and reusability for efficiently adsorbing Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions.

Ba1.09Pb0.91Be2(BO3)2F2 (BPBBF), a previously unreported lead-containing beryllium borate fluoride, has been successfully grown through a high-temperature flux method. Its structure is solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), and it is optically characterized via infrared, Raman, UV–vis–IR transmission, and polarizing spectra as well. SC-XRD data suggests that it can be indexed by a trigonal unit cell (space group P3m1) with lattice parameters a = 4.7478(6) Å, c = 8.3856(12) Å, Z = 1, and V = 163.70(5) Å. This material could be considered as a derivative of the Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO) structural motif. It consists of 2D [Be3B3O6F3]∞ layers in the crystallographic ab plane, with divalent Ba2+ or Pb2+ cations serving as spacers among the adjacent layers. Ba and Pb were found to adopt a disordered arrangement in the trigonal prismatic coordination within the BPBBF structural lattice, which is evidenced by both structural refinements against SC-XRD data and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The UV absorption edge (279.1 nm) and birefringence (Δn = 0.054@ 546.1 nm) of BPBBF are confirmed by UV–vis–IR transmission and polarizing spectra, respectively. The discovery of this previous unreported SBBO-type material, BPBBF, along with other reported analogues such as BaMBe2(BO3)2F2 (M = Ca, Mg, and Cd), provide a prodigious example for tuning the bandgap, birefringence, and short UV absorption edge via simple chemical substitution.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received special attention from scientists owing to their excellent adsorption performance. However, the difficulty in separating MOFs from adsorbed metals following use has limited their application. A zeolitic imidazole-based MOF with broad applicability for sorption of Pb(II) is examined. In this work, a novel adsorbent employing ZIF-8/calcium alginate microparticles was prepared using sodium alginate and ZIF-8. This adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The performance of the ZIF-8@CA microparticles in adsorbing Pb(II) from a Pb(II) solution was investigated, and the impacts of the initial Pb(II) concentration, reaction time, pH, and reaction temperature on the reaction process were investigated. The results showed that ZIF-8@CA microparticles exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1321.21 mg/g at pH 5 after 120 min, and the adsorption process was found to fit the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9856) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9999). These results showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) was an endothermic process. The regeneration experiment with ZIF-8@CA revealed that the removal efficiency of Pb(II) was greater than 80% even after five cycles.

In this study, the novel adsorbent PVA-TA-βCD was synthesized via thermal cross-linking between polyvinyl alcohol and β-cyclodextrin. The characterization methods SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS were adopted to characterize the adsorbent. The effect of pH, contact time, initial concentrations, and temperature during the adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II) onto the PVA-TA-βCD was also investigated. In a single-component system, the data fitted well to pseudo-second-order, and film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion both played important roles in the adsorption process. As for isotherm study, it showed a heterogeneous adsorption capacity of 199.11, 116.52, and 90.28 mg g −1 for the Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II), respectively. Competition between the ions existed in a multi-component system; however, owing to the stronger affinity of the PVA-TA-βCD for Pb(II) relative to Cd(II) and Mn(II), the Pb(II) adsorption onto the PVA-TA-βCD was less affected by the addition of the other metals, which could be effectively explained by the hard and soft acid and base theory (HSAB). Furthermore, PVA-TA-βCD showed good reusability throughout regeneration experiments.

In this work, a biobased adsorbent (CMC-PAMA) consisting of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylic acid and polyacrylamide was prepared by a simple thermal crosslinking method for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Pb (II) from aqueous solutions. The CMC-PAMA showed excellent static adsorption capacities for MB and Pb (II) of 1611.44 mg·g −1 840.11 mg·g −1 , respectively, indicating its excellent performance on dyes dynamic removal. The adsorption performance of the as-prepared CMC-PAMA could be fitted well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isothermal model. The adsorption mechanism between CMC-PAMA and Pb (II) was confirmed by FT-IR, XPS and ion-exchange behavior. Interestingly, CMC-PAMA showed high efficiency for separation of MB/methyl orange (MO) mixtures, low equilibrium swelling ratio (0.52 g·g −1 ) in distilled water, good stability and reusability. With those combined advantages, CMC-PAMA could find potential application in wastewater treatment.

A new metal organic framework UiO-66-RSA (UiO-66 with hydroxyl) was prepared by the post-modification of UiO-66-NH 2 (UiO-66 with amino) with resorcyl aldehyde and was employed for the efficient and selective separation and removal of Pb(II) in aqueous media . The maximum adsorption amount of UiO-66-RSA was 189.8 mg/g at an optimal pH of 4. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic were well described by Langmuir/Dubinin-Radushkevich and pseudo-second-order models respectively. Adsorption process was monolayer chemisorption . UiO-66-RSA was regenerated by thiourea/nitric acid and the removal rate was only decreased by 3.7% after five successive cycles. The analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested the adsorption mechanism lay on the complexation reaction between hydroxyl/nitrogen-containing groups and Pb(II). The UiO-66-RSA bound Pb(II) by forming double/quadri coordinated complexes. Compared with a multitude of usual metal ions , viz., Zn(II), Co(IV), Ni(II), Mg(II), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Ca(II), the Pb(II) could be absorbed selectively by UiO-66-RSA. The results indicated that the UiO-66-RSA sorbent could be of great potential in the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

Hypothesis Modification of MIL-100(Fe) with ethanediamine (ED) is expected to improve the removal percentage of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. Nevertheless, the adsorption performance of ED-MIL-100(Fe) in natural waters will be affected by natural organic matter such as fulvic acids (FA). Hence, it is necessary to study the influence of FA on the physicochemical property, adsorption behavior and mechanisms of ED-MIL-100(Fe) towards the removal of Pb(II) from water. Experiments Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to compare adsorption capacity of MIL-100(Fe) and ED-MIL-100(Fe) for Pb(II). In addition, XRD , FTIR, SEM and XPS techniques were applied to investigate the characteristics, adsorption isotherms , and kinetics in the presence and absence of FA. Findings ED-MIL-100(Fe) enabled 99% removal of Pb(II) from water at or below 60 mg L −1 , whereas the MIL-100(Fe) hardly adsorbed any Pb(II). Additionally, the adsorption percentage of the Pb(II) ions (76%) outcompeted that of other metal ions (i.e. Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd) (each ≤ 25%) in the mixed solution. The negative surface charge of ED-MIL-100(Fe) was not affected by FA. Increasing FA concentration steadily increased the functional groups surrounding the ED-MIL-100(Fe) via electrical interaction, thus facilitating the Pb(II) ions adsorption.

In this study, a crosslinked yeast/β-cyclodextrin polymer (Y–β-CDP), for use as an effective adsorbent for removal Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution, has been innovatively prepared by grafting β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) onto the surface of baker's yeast (BY) and thiomalic acid as a crosslinker. Several characterization techniques, such as SEM equipped with an EDS analyzer, FTIR, XRD, and XPS were employed characterize the Y–β-CDP. The impact of various operating parameters, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of metal ions, contact time and solution temperature, as well as adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were systematically investigated. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on Y–β-CDP reached equilibrium in 25 min, and the kinetic process conforms to the pseudo-second order model. The Langmuir model was used to describe the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The predicted maximum adsorption capacity at 25 °C for Pb(II) and Cd(II) was 150.08 and 102.80 mg g−1, respectively, when the initial concentration of metal ions was 120 mg L−1. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption procedure of Pb(II) and Cd(II) onto Y–β-CDP was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, regeneration experiments demonstrated that Y–β-CDP had excellent recyclability. Together, all results suggested that Y–β-CDP could potentially be a promising adsorbent in the purification of water contaminated with heavy metal ions.

A novel amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs @SiO 2 -NH 2 ) was prepared via co-condensation using etraethyl orthosilicate and 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane for effective removal of Pb(II) from water. The Pb (II) adsorption efficiencies of MWCNTs and MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 were compared and the change of morphology features was assessed in batch adsorption experiments. The characterization analysis like XRD, FITR and XPS revealed that amino groups were successfully grafted on the MWCNTs. Adsorption results demonstrated that the best TEOS/APTMS loading ratio was about 10:3 based on their solution volume ratio. Compared to the poor Pb(II) adsorption capacity of pristine MWCNTs, the maximum adsorption capacity of MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 was greatly improved to 147 mg/g after amination treatment. Pb(II) adsorption onto MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 was strongly pH-dependent and the optimal aqueous pH was about 5. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model could well describe the Pb(II) adsorption process by MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 . Thermodynamics analysis illustrated that the Pb(II) adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. FTIR and XPS analysis of MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 after adsorption demonstrated the complexation between amino groups and Pb(II) played a vital role in the adsorption mechanism. Findings from the present study suggested that successful Pb(II) removal could be achieved using such novel adsorbent composite with optimized process.

In this study, novel composite titanium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) beads were synthesized from titanium based metal organic framework MIL-125 and chitosan (CS) and used to remove Pb(II) from wastewater. The MIL-125-CS beads were prepared by combining the titanium-based MIL-125 MOF and chitosan using a template-free solvothermal approach under ambient conditions. The surface and elemental properties of these beads were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, as well as thermal gravimetric analysis. Moreover, a series of experiments designed to determine the influences of factors such as initial Pb(II) concentration, pH, reaction time and adsorption temperature was conducted. Notably, it was found that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto the MIL-125-CS beads reached equilibrium in 180 min to a level of 407.50 mg/g at ambient temperature. In addition, kinetic and equilibrium experiments provided data that were fit to the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Furthermore, reusability tests showed that MIL-125-CS retained 85% of its Pb(II)-removal capacity after five reuse cycles. All in all, we believe that the developed MIL-125-CS beads are a promising adsorbent material for the remediation of environmental water polluted by heavy metal ions.Keywords:metal-organic framework;chitosan beads;adsorption;Pb(II)

Lignin grafted N, N′-methylene-bisacrylamide (LM) was copolymerized with acrylic acid (AA) to fabricate lignin based poly (acrylic acid) (LBPAA) nanocomposites, and organo-montmorillonite (OrgMMT) was uniformly dispersed in LBPAA by ultrasonic method. The water absorbency in KCl solution was 302.9 g/g for LBPAA/OrgMMT (3 wt% OrgMMT, 43.65 wt% LM, and 53.35 wt% poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)), higher than PAA/OrgMMT (104.5736 g/g), and PAA (131.8 g/g). The Pb 2+ adsorption for LBPAA/OrgMMT was demonstrated to be pH-dependent and followed Freundlich multilayer adsorption , with the removal following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model . The Pb 2+ absorption capacity of LBPAA (PAA 48.50/48.50 LM)/OrgMMT (3 wt%) was 1.0803 mmol·g −1 , the highest among the composites. When the mole ratio of Na + and Pb 2+ was less than 0.21, the Pb 2+ adsorption capacity of LBPAA/OrgMMT decreased slightly. The negative ΔG 0 indicated that the Pb 2+ adsorption process for composite hydrogel and PAA was spontaneous. XPS analysis data indicated that Pb 2+ ions formed Pb-O bonds by hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups for efficient lead ion adsorption. This study demonstrates that LBPAA/OrgMMT can be used as a water retention agent with salt tolerance and as an adsorbent for removing Pb 2+ ions from industrial waste water .

Chrysotile nanotubes (ChNTs) synthesized under hydrothermal conditions were functionalized by surface grafting in toluene with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). The mercapto functionalized ChNTs (ChNTs-SH) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N 2 adsorption–desorption. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ChNTs-SH was investigated systematically by evaluating the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial pH and temperature. Initial pH could play an important role on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) onto ChNTs-SH. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ChNTs-SH indicated that the kinetic data of adsorption reactions were well described by the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 = 0.9960 and 0.9970, respectively) and the adsorption isotherms were fitted well by the Langmuir model ( q m Pb(II) = 83.96 mg/g, q m Cd(II) = 39.23 mg/g at 298 ± 1 K). The thermodynamic parameters (Δ G , Δ H and Δ S ) indicated that the adsorption process of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ChNTs-SH was spontaneous and endothermic. ChNTs-SH could obviously improve the adsorption capacity for Pb(II) by 225.4% and for Cd(II) by 123.5% as compared with ChNTs. Overall, ChNTs-SH could provide a potential remedy for heavy metal contamination in wastewater.
