The catalytic conversion of naturally rich and renewable biomass into high-value chemicals is of great significance for pursuing a sustainable future and a green economy. The preparation of pentanediol from furfuryl alcohol is an important means of high-value conversion of biomass. The Pt-based catalyst supported on MgO was applied to the selective hydrogenation of biomass furfuryl alcohol to prepare pentanediol. By adjusting parameters such as catalyst loading, reduction temperature, reaction temperature, and pressure, a highly active catalyst was designed and the optimal catalytic hydrogenation conditions were determined. The hydrogenation experiment results showed that the selectivity of the 2Pt/MgO-200 catalyst for 1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol reached 59.4% and 15.2%, respectively, under 160 °C and 1 MPa hydrogen pressure. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), CO2-temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and other methods. The characterization results indicate that the reduction temperature has a significant impact on the metal Pt, and an appropriate reduction temperature is beneficial for the hydrogenation performance of the catalyst. In addition, the basic sites on the carrier are also another important factor affecting the activity of the catalyst. In addition, stability tests were conducted on the catalyst, and the reasons for catalyst deactivation were studied using methods such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that the activity of the catalyst decreased after five cycles, and the deactivation was due to the hydrolysis of the carrier, the increase in metal particle size, and the surface adsorption of organic matter.

Developing an accurate, reliable, and stable glucose detection sensor poses a formidable challenge for the food industry. In this study, hydrothermal and wet chemical methods were employed to fabricate a Pt single-atom catalyst on Co3O4 (Co3O4/Pt SAs), where dispersed Pt atoms collaboratively catalyze the electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. Subsequently, the integration of the microelectrode with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) hydrogel and a dual-channel microfluidic chip facilitated continuous and rapid glucose detection. The addition of 5% PEG-DA hydrogel served to eliminate interference and expedite glucose detection, while the design of the dual-channel microfluidic chip generated microscale vortices, providing ample reaction opportunities for the target glucose while preventing interference from the mixing of previous and current reaction solutions. The research exhibited a favorable linear detection range from 1 to 800 μM, with a detection limit of 0.84 μM. Furthermore, validation of the device’s feasibility in real samples demonstrated a glucose recovery rate ranging from 94.9 to 104.4% in beverages.

The use of dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole in hydrogen storage for liquid organic hydrogen carrier systems holds potential for achieving large-scale application. In order to investigate the relationship between dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation performance and Pt particles size, a series of monometallic Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with different Pt particles size from 0.70 nm to 5.12 nm were controlled synthesized by a simple impregnation method. The obtained catalysts are systematically characterized via XRD, 27 Al MAS NMR, SEM-EDS, TEM, N 2 -adsorption, CO-IR, H 2 -TPR and NH 3 -TPD analyses, which provide essential micro-structure of these catalysts. The dehydrogenation of dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole over Pt/Al 2 O 3 is a typical consecutive reaction, which follows a reaction sequence of dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole → octahydro- N -ethylcarbazole → tetrahydro- N -ethylcarbazole → N -ethylcarbazole. These dehydrogenation steps are quite sensitive to the Pt particle size. Large Pt particle can greatly enhance the reaction rates in octahydro- N -ethylcarbazole → tetrahydro- N -ethylcarbazole and tetrahydro- N -ethylcarbazole → N -ethylcarbazole steps. However, these two steps are difficult to take place in small Pt particles. The high performance of large Pt particle in dehydrogenation can be ascribed to its highly exposed (1 1 1) crystal face. The optimized catalyst Pt 5.0 /γ-Al 2 O 3 with Pt average size of 4.63 nm demonstrated exceptional performance in dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation at 180 °C and 101 kPa, and the dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole conversion of 100 %, N -ethylcarbazole selectivity of 96.44 % and dehydrogenation efficiency of 98.73 % can be achieved. These results provide valuable insights for the development of efficient metal-based catalysts for liquid organic hydrogen carriers hydrogen storage system.

The three-dimensional (3D) microstructures assembled by nanomaterials have attracted great attention due to their unique hierarchical structure and large surface area. In this study, the hierarchical nanosheets-assembled SnS 2 hollow microspheres with an average diameter of 6.1 μm were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method . Then Pt nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of SnS 2 to form Pt/SnS 2 nanocomposites using the in-situ reduction method. Compared with pristine SnS 2 -based sensors, the Pt/SnS 2 sensors exhibited improved gas-sensing performances to NO 2 gas, including higher sensitivity, shorter response time , and better selectivity . The superior sensing performance can be ascribed to the Schottky junction created between Pt and SnS 2 , along with the catalytic effect of Pt. Moreover, the adsorption energy of SnS 2 and Pt-modified SnS 2 for NO 2 molecules was calculated using first principles based on density functional theory (DFT). The Pt modification can enhance the interaction of NO 2 with the SnS 2 surface, which is favorable for improving the gas-sensing properties. This work provides novel hierarchical SnS 2 microspheres based gas sensors for NO 2 detection.

Pt-Cu bimetallic particles have been regarded as promising catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. The dispersion of Pt and Cu species on conventional supports always results in the formation of large Pt-Cu particles, and it is highly desirable to fabricate ultra-small Pt-Cu cluster catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Herein, we used the isolated Cu species in the Cu-SSZ-13 to localize the Pt species and the alloying of Pt with Cu leads to a formation of ultra-small (<1 nm) Pt-Cu bimetallic clusters in the structure of SSZ-13. The structure of synthesized PtCu-SSZ-13 catalysts was studied by XRD, SEM, STEM, XPS, CO-FTIR, H 2 -TPR and EXAFS techniques, which demonstrates that Pt-Cu clusters are entrapped in the micropore of SSZ-13 and their migration can be greatly inhibited. The synthesized PtCu-SSZ-13 catalyst shows high activity and good regeneration in propane dehydrogenation. The optimized catalyst 0.3 %PtCu-SSZ-13 delivers propane conversion of 28.5 % (close to equilibrium conversion) with 100 % propane as feed under WHSV of 7.1 h −1 at 520°C, and its catalytic performance can be completely regenerated via calcination in air. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the unique Pt-Cu bimetallic nanocluster structure reduces the energy potential for propane dehydrogenation as well as promotes the adsorption of C 3 H 8 and desorption of C 3 H 6 thus enhancing the activity of the PtCu-SSZ-13 catalyst.

With the growing issue of antibiotic resistance, it has become increasingly crucial to develop highly efficient antimicrobial materials. While the single-component nanozyme systems exhibited some catalytic activity, their efficiency remains suboptimal. This study presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt hybrid nanozyme composed of photothermal agents and nanozymes, which leverages the photothermal effect to enhance nanozyme activity and achieve efficient antimicrobial effects. The composite material exhibited peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity, effectively converting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Meanwhile, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt material demonstrated high photothermal conversion ability, which not only promoted the generation of ·OH under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, but also facilitated copper (Cu2+) ions release from the CuWO4 nanozyme, thereby further augmenting its catalytic activity. After 4 to 5 min of light irradiation, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanozyme exhibited significant antimicrobial performance against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In summary, this work presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanoplatform that utilizes the photothermal effect to enhance the chemodynamic antimicrobial activity, showcasing its potential applications in antibiotic-free antimicrobial fields.

Nowadays, the electrocatalytic regulation mechanism of quantum dots (QDs)-supported materials is limited to strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) and electron-metal-support interaction (EMSI). However, the lattice strain of the carrier induced by QDs is neglected, which is not conducive to the directional design of the QDs-supported electrode and the establishment of its structure-performance correlation. Given these, the size and distribution of Pt QDs controlled by electrodeposition effectively regulate the strain degree on S-NiFeP nanosheets. DFT results reveal that Pt@S-NiFeP/NF complies with a Fe-Pt dual active sites mechanism for alkaline HER, and a Fe active site mechanism for OER. Interestingly, the compressive strain in the S-NiFeP substrate effectively promotes the d‐band center shift and the energy barrier reduction, thereby optimizing the alkaline HER and OER kinetics. As expected, Pt@S-NiFeP/NF with appropriate strain owns alkaline HER and OER performance at 1 A cm −2 that exceeds the commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 . Overall, this work has guided the structural design of the 'noble metal QDs@carrier' model and laid a foundation for its application at ampere-level current densities.

Infrared (IR) thermal imaging offers a reliable technique in the field of gas detection, it can convert the invisible IR radiation into a visible IR image based on the temperature difference between the target and the background or the parts of the target, and its gas selectivity mainly depends on the spectral absorption properties of the target gas in IR spectrum . Unfortunately, owing to weak absorption in the IR region , the precise selective detection of hydrogen can therefore be quite challenging by using traditional IR detection methods. To address the limitations of IR thermal imaging technology in hydrogen detection and enhance its hydrogen selectivity, a novel catalytic IR thermal imaging-based hydrogen monitoring platform is proposed and demonstrated. To achieve specific hydrogen selection, a hydrogen-sensitive highly-exothermic mesoporous material , Pt-WO 3 , is designed and prepared, which can be used as highly-active catalysts to specifically activate exothermic reaction between hydrogen and oxygen at room temperature, and a common IR camera can become a hydrogen-selective gas detection device by adding a Pt-WO 3 -based window plate, the IR radiation changes on Pt-WO 3 -based window plate surface caused by exothermic reaction can be rapidly and accurately recognized by using IR camera. Additionally, real-time image processing can be used to create high-resolution IR images from original low-resolution IR images and can promote to further improve the detection accuracy. Through analyzing the performance, it can be concluded that the hydrogen detection platform assembled with a higher Pt-WO 3 mass or density window plate is more sensitive to hydrogen. When the hydrogen concentration rises to 1.6 % and a 2.0 mg and 3 mm coating diameter Pt-WO 3 -coated window plate is selected as a hydrogen selective element, the maximum surface temperature of the hydrogen selective window plate reaches 100.76℃ (which contains the ambient background temperature component), however, this is accompanied by a longer response and recovery time. While a 0.5 mg and 4 mm coating diameter Pt-WO 3 -coated window plate is selected as a hydrogen selective element, and hydrogen concentration is 0.5 %, the response and recovery time of this catalytic IR hydrogen detection system is 17 s and 24 s at room temperature. Experimental results indicate that this catalytic IR thermal imaging-based hydrogen detection scheme has the potential to offer a novel solution in the field of gas monitoring.

Although the application of nanoscale artificial enzymes in various industries is an attractive way to circumvent the intrinsic drawbacks of natural enzymes, their catalytic constant (Kcat) as a critical reaction parameter is far from satisfactory. Presented here is the rational design and fabrication of a unique peroxidase mimic catalyst based upon Pd@PtxRu4−x (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) prepared by coating PtRu alloy as conformal, ultrathin shells on Pd nanocrystals. Benefiting from an optimal Pt/Ru ratio and well-defined {100} facets, together with confining the Pt–Ru alloy to a shell of averagely 3.3-atomic-layer thick (i.e. Pd@Pt–Ru3.3L), the nanocrystals exhibit the highest catalytic activity and kinetics (1.2 × 106 s−1), resulting in a significant increase of catalytic activity compared with the classical PtRu nanozyme (3.6 × 103 s−1) and horseradish peroxidase (4.0 × 103 s−1), respectively. The following density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the origin of the superior catalytic performance could be attributed to the modulation of the adsorption behavior of the key reaction intermediates on the surface. As a proof of concept, its peroxidase mimicking ability is adopted for sensing glucose and glutathione molecules in human serum, with a long linear range and high selectivity. This work opens new horizons for the future development of advanced catalysts based upon alloy nanocrystals for various applications.

Transparent ferroelectric materials have garnered extensive attention from researchers due to their superior optical and electrical properties, enabling applications in medical photoacoustic imaging, transparent piezoelectric transducers, and other fields. As a new generation of transparent piezoelectric ceramics, PIN-PMN-PT shows broader application potential. However, there is a trade-off among the transmittance, piezoelectric performance, and Curie temperature of PIN-PMN-PT ceramics, making it challenging to prepare materials that simultaneously feature high transmittance, strong piezoelectricity, and a high Curie temperature. Researchers have long recognized that compositional design within the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) can optimize material properties, and rare-earth doping strategies introducing local heterogeneity further enhance performance. It should be noted that rare-earth doping inevitably causes slight shifts in the MPB, yet current studies on ternary PIN-PMN-PT ceramics are often confined to the MPB region of undoped samples. Therefore, exploring the influence of rare-earth doping on the MPB is of great significance. In this work, 1 mol% Sm-15PIN-PMN- x PT ( x = 31, 33, 35, 37, 39) transparent ferroelectric ceramics were prepared via a two-step sintering method. It was found that when the phase structure is a coexisting rhombohedral-tetragonal structure with the tetragonal phase slightly exceeding the rhombohedral phase, a mixed-domain morphology of ferroelectric domains is induced, endowing the sample with optimal comprehensive performance. Specifically, 1 mol% Sm-15PIN-PMN-35PT ceramics exhibit a room-temperature d 33 of 760 pC/N, an optical transmittance T of 62 % @ 2000 nm, and a Curie temperature of 187.4 °C. Notably, the d 33 reaches 1100 pC/N at 96 °C, the highest value reported for PIN-PMN-PT piezoelectric ceramics to date. This study provides valuable experience and insights for the design and preparation of transparent ferroelectric ceramics with excellent comprehensive properties.

Controlling product selectivity in platinum-based catalysts during hydrocarbon reforming is a critical challenge, with the main difficulty being the suppression of side reactions like hydrogenolysis. In this work, we report a facile and scalable in situ strategy that significantly enhances the yield of aromatics by activating Pt/Al2O3 catalyst in a propane atmosphere. We demonstrate that this method results in selective deposition of a functional carbon overlayer onto excessively active metal–support interface sites, thereby suppressing the hydrogenolysis pathway, the primary source of low-carbon byproducts. As a result, the selectivity for aromatics nearly doubled, increasing from 17% for the conventionally hydrogen-reduced catalyst to 32%. This work not only transforms carbon deposition from a deactivation factor into a tool for precisely tuning active sites but also provides a powerful strategy for developing highly efficient reforming catalysts.

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are promising materials for safe, reversible, and high-density hydrogen storage. Atomically dispersed bimetallic Pt–Sn nanocluster catalysts supported on TiO2(Pt–Sn/TiO2) were developed to enhance the hydrogenation step in the toluene-methylcyclohexane cycle, a model LOHC system. Compared with monometallic Pt/TiO2and Sn/TiO2, Pt–Sn/TiO2exhibited superior hydrogenation performance. Mechanistic studies, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, kinetic analysis, and H2-D2exchange experiments, revealed that Sn incorporation modulates the electronic structure of Pt, enhancing H2activation and spillover. These findings provide insights into the rational design of atomically dispersed bimetallic nanocluster catalysts for efficient and durable hydrogen storage in LOHC-based systems.
