YingDe black tea is produced from crude tea prepared from leaves of Camellia sinensis var. assamica . In this work, we isolated and identified five novel flavanones, namely, amelliaone A – E ( 1 – 5 ), along with seven known compounds 6 – 12 from the ethanol extract of YingDe black tea. The structures of these five novel phenolic compounds were determined using extensive 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments. The compounds were further evaluated for antioxidant, α -glucosidase inhibitory, and cytotoxic activities. Compound 1 exhibited higher α -glucosidase inhibitory activity with a half-maximum inhibitory concentration value (IC 50 ) of 10.2 µM compared with acarbose (18.2 µM).

We prepared tea tree essential oil microcapsules, and the microcapsules and pullulan were coated on kraft paper to prepare an antibacterial paper. The antibacterial activity, structural characterization, and thermal stability of the prepared microcapsules and packaging paper were then tested. We found that the retention rate of microcapsules reached 87.1% after a 70 min of high-temperature treatment. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of microcapsules to S. aureus and E. coli were 112 mg/mL and 224 mg/mL, and the bacteriostatic zones of the packaging paper to E. coli and S. aureus were 17.49 mm and 22.75 mm, respectively. The prepared microcapsules were irregular. The paper coating was formed via hydrogen bonding, which filled the pores of paper fibers. When compared with the base paper, the roughness of the paper was reduced to 7.16 nm (Rq) and 5.61 nm (Ra), and no thermal decomposition occurred at <288 °C, which together implies a good application prospect.

Acrolein (ACR), methylglyoxal (MGO), and glyoxal (GO) are a class of reactive carbonyl species (RCS), which play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic and age-related diseases. Here, we explored a new RCS inhibitor (theanine, THE) and investigated its capture capacity on RCS in vivo by human experiments. After proving that theanine could efficiently capture ACR instead of MGO/GO by forming adducts under simulated physiological conditions, we further detected the ACR/MGO/GO adducts of theanine in the human urine samples after consumption of theanine capsules (200 and 400 mg) or green tea (4 cups, containing 200 mg of theanine) by using ultraperformance liquid chromatography–time-of-flight–high-resolution mass spectrometry. Quantitative assays revealed that THE-ACR, THE-2ACR-1, THE-MGO, and THE-GO were formed in a dose-dependent manner in the theanine capsule groups; the maximum value of the adducts of theanine was also tested. Furthermore, besides the RCS adducts of theanine, the RCS adducts of catechins could also be detected in the drinking tea group. Whereas, metabolite profile analysis showed that theanine could better capture RCS produced in the renal metabolic pathway than catechins. Our findings indicated that theanine could reduce RCS in the body in two ways: as a pure component or contained in tea leaves.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are widely used in agricultural cultivation, and the presence of residual NEOs poses a serious threat to consumer health. Therefore, trace detection of NEOs is particularly important. In this study, a response surface experimental design was employed to develop AgNP with high enhancement factor and surface height anisotropy, effectively enhancing the Raman signals of acetamiprid (ACE) and thiacloprid (THI) through densely populated hotspots on the surface. Gaussian simulation calculations were used to assign peaks in the ACE and THI spectra. Subsequently, convolutional neural network, backpropagation neural network, and AlexNet neural network were employed to identify the ACE, THI, and mixed component spectra, successfully distinguishing the spectra of the three compounds and achieving qualitative analysis of unknown spectra. Furthermore, genetic algorithm-partial least squares was used to model the spectral data, achieving a correlation coefficient of 0.97. The method was applied for the detection of spiked tea samples, achieving a precision RSD of 4.84 %. Therefore, this sensor combined with intelligent algorithms can be used for spectral identification and trace detection of mixed pesticide samples with structurally similar compounds.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is considered to be one of the most promising strategies to solve the global freshwater shortage. However, the high cost of photothermal materials, the complex manufacturing process of evaporators, and low water evaporation rates and evaporation efficiency limit their practical application. In this study, a biochar-deduced porous hydrogel (TBC-PH) based on tea waste as a raw material was prepared as an efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporator using a simple cross-linking foaming method. The evaporator exhibits good light absorption, hydrophilicity and excellent salt resistance for efficient solar evaporation. Its interconnected porous structure enhances capillary action and enables rapid water transport while effectively preventing salt crystallization. Under one solar intensity, the water evaporation rate of 3.268 kg m −2 h −1 and the solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 95.14 % were achieved. Besides, TBC-PH exhibits obvious purification effect on seawater and organic dye wastewater. The evaporator’s utilization of waste biomass is not only simple and economical, but also advances the practical application of waste management while addressing water scarcity, highlighting its potential as an efficient and sustainable solution for SDIE applications.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening vascular disease, while there is a lack of pharmaceutical interventions to halt AAA progression presently. To address the multifaceted pathology of AAA, this work develops a novel multifunctional gene delivery system to simultaneously deliver two siRNAs targeting MMP-2 and MMP-9. The system (TPNs-siRNA), formed through the oxidative polymerization and self-assembly of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), efficiently encapsulates siRNAs during self-assembly. TPNs-siRNA safeguards siRNAs from biological degradation, facilitates intracellular siRNA transfection, promotes lysosomal escape, and releases siRNAs to silence MMP-2 and MMP-9. Additionally, TPNs, serving as a multi-bioactive material, mitigates oxidative stress and inflammation, fosters M1-to-M2 repolarization of macrophages, and inhibits cell calcification and apoptosis. In experiments with AAA mice, TPNs-siRNA accumulated and persisted in aneurysmal tissue after intravenous delivery, demonstrating that TPNs-siRNA can be significantly distributed in macrophages and VSMCs relevant to AAA pathogenesis. Leveraging the carrier’s intrinsic multi-bioactive properties, the targeted siRNA delivery by TPNs exhibits a synergistic effect for enhanced AAA therapy. Furthermore, TPNs-siRNA is gradually metabolized and excreted from the body, resulting in excellent biocompatibility. Consequently, TPNs emerges as a promising multi-bioactive nanotherapy and a targeted delivery nanocarrier for effective AAA therapy.Graphical Abstract

In this study, in order to solve the application problems of poor water solubility and low bioavailability of quercetin, we prepared a nano-delivery system with core-shell structure by anti-solvent method, including a hydrophilic shell composed of tea saponin and a hydrophobic core composed of Zein, which was used to improve the delivery efficiency and biological activity of quercetin. Through the optimal experiments, the loading rate and encapsulation rate of nanoparticles reached 89.41 % and 7.94 % respectively. And the water solubility of quercetin is improved by 30.16 times. At the same time, the quercetin acted with Zein through non-covalent interaction and destroyed its spatial network through structural characterization, while tea saponin covered the surface of Zein through electrostatic interaction, making it change into amorphous state. In addition, the addition of tea saponin makes the nanoparticles remain stable under the changes of external environment. During simulating gastrointestinal digestion procedure, ZQTNPs has higher release rate and bioavailability than free quercetin. Importantly, ZQTNPs can overcome the limitations of a single substance through synergy. These results will promote the innovative development of quercetin precision nutrition delivery system.

The effective utilization of biomass resources can bring significantly environmental and economic benefits. In this context, tea saponin, which can be easily and extensively extracted from the oil cake as the biomass waste during the seed oil production from camellia seeds, is explored as the precursor to synthesize porous carbon bearing abundant –OH and –COOH groups via a simple carbonization process. Owing to the obtained porous structure and existence of rich oxygen-containing groups serving as Lewis acidic sites, the carbonized tea saponin (CTS) can display impressive catalytic activities for CO 2 cycloaddition reaction with both high selectivity (> 99%) and high yield of target cyclic carbonate under either thermally driven (80 °C and 0.1 MPa CO 2 ) or photo-thermally driven (UV-Vis light irradiation with the light intensity of 350 mW/cm 2 ) conditions. In addition, benefiting from the good chemical stability, CTS can be reused for many cycles with almost no catalytic activity loss, making CTS a promising biomass-based catalyst for CO 2 fixation under mild conditions.

Drying plays a crucial role in shaping tea’s quality. This study investigated the effects of sun drying, hot-air drying, and combined drying on the taste profile of crude Ancha tea (CAT) by using sensory analysis and metabolomics methods. One-way analysis of variance and multivariate statistical analysis identified 33 key differential metabolites in CAT, including six substances with a dose over threshold (Dot) > 1 that contributed to bitterness and astringency: (−)-epicatechin gallate, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, kaempferol-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, myricetin-3-galactoside, and kaempferol-3-rutinoside. Sun drying reduced the levels of (−)-epicatechin gallate, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, and kaempferol-3-rutinoside but increased the levels of kaempferol-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, and myricetin-3-galactoside, thereby reducing the bitterness and astringency of CAT. Taste addition experiments confirmed that these six target compounds were the main contributors to the differences in bitterness and astringency between the CAT samples prepared using different drying methods. Moreover, the experiments demonstrated that caffeine significantly enhanced the intensity of bitterness.

To overcome the limitations of conventional enzymatic glyphosate (Glyp) detection methods, including enzyme environmental sensitivity, high cost, and limited enzyme sources, this study developed a portable paper-based fluorescence platform (Y-R membrane) based on a metal-organic framework (MOF)-driven fluorescence regulation mechanism for non-enzymatic and rapid detection of Glyp. This platform was constructed by immobilizing MnMOF and yellow carbon dots (Y-CDs) on a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane. The ZrOx-OH derived from alkaline-treated UiO-66 regulated the Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ redox reactions through its surface hydroxyl groups, triggering the red fluorescence of MnMOF. Glyp detection was achieved via competitive binding of its carboxyl groups to ZrOx-OH hydroxyls, inhibiting the redox process and inducing concentration-dependent fluorescence quenching. Coupled with RGB analysis, this platform exhibited excellent linearity (R 2 = 0.993) within 0.1–100 μg/mL range, with a detection limit of 0.06 μg/mL. The standard addition experiments demonstrated Glyp detection recoveries of 96.0 %∼103.4 % in tea samples, completing detection within 15 min. This platform enabled rapid, accurate and visual screening of Glyp residues without needing enzymatic reactions or sophisticated instruments. With its advantages of operational simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and intuitive readout, this system offered a novel competitive reaction-based sensing strategy for on-site rapid screening of Glyp in agricultural products.

Leaf grade is a critical factor influencing black tea aroma formation, yet the precise relationship between leaf grade and aroma characteristics, along with their key volatile compounds, remains unclear. This study employed sensory evaluation combined with headspace solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS), odor activity values (OAV), partial least squares (PLS) regression, and correlation analysis to investigate the association between leaf grades and aroma attributes, as well as their key volatile compounds. Sensory evaluation and quantitative analysis revealed that as fresh tea leaf grade decreased, the sweet aroma attribute gradually declined, while the floral aroma initially decreased before increasing. GC-MS and OAV analyses identified 22 and 23 differential aroma-active compounds in ‘Jinguanyin’ (JGY) and ‘Jinmudan’ (JMD) black teas of different grades, respectively. Furthermore, PLS modeling and correlation analysis determined that β-damascenone, β-myrcene, geraniol, linalool, and trans -β-ocimene were key compounds responsible for sweet aroma variations across leaf grades, whereas methyl jasmonate, β-ionone, and jasmine lactone were identified as critical compounds influencing floral aroma differences. This study deciphered the chemical basis of how leaf grades affect black tea aroma quality, providing theoretical guidance for precision processing of black tea.

This research aims to develop a precise and efficient dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPE) technique using third-generation polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-grafted nanoparticles to quantify benzoylurea pesticides in green tea, black tea, and oolong tea infusions. The extraction efficiency is optimized through single-factor adjustments of key parameters, including adsorbent quantity (5-20 mg), adsorption duration (5-20 min), desorbent identity (methanol, acetonitrile), volume (100-600 μL), sodium chloride concentration (0-10%, m/v), and sample solution pH (3-8). The optimized method demonstrates linearity in the range of 2-500 μg L-1, with limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.6-1.5 μg L-1 and limits of quantification (LOQs) from 2.0 5.0 μg L-1. Recovery rates of 81.2-96.0% are achieved, with intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.4-2.8% and inter-day relative standard deviations of 2.0-3.9%, indicating high accuracy and repeatability. The successful application of detecting residues in commercial tea samples underscores the strong potential of the technique to determine benzoylurea analyte levels.
