Glutathione Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymer from CLX1180 via Three Modes of Polymerization for Selective Adsorption of Glutathione

Jun Zhang,Meng Wang,Wenli Peng,Zhengcan Chen,Zhenbin Chen

A novel glutathione (GSH) surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIP) was prepared using modified macroporous adsorption resin (MAR) CLX1180 as a solid substrate, glutathione as a template, acrylamide (AM) and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) as functional monomers, and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) as a cross-linker. The reaction could be initiated by three different ways, using CLX1180, GSH, and both, which was proved by the experimentation. The morphology and structure of this polymer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS). The maximum adsorption capacity of GSH approached 39.03 mg·g–1, and the separation degree related to l-cysteine was as high as 4.18. Pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models were well fitting the adsorption properties. GSH-SMIP could be used for three adsorption/desorption cycles with only a slight decrease of adsorption capacity.

Green Synthesis of Cellulose Nanofibrils Decorated with Ag Nanoparticles and Their Application in Colorimetric Detection of l-Cysteine

Zhencheng Yu,Chuanshuang Hu,Litao Guan,Weiwei Zhang,Jin Gu

In this study, we reported an environmentally benign method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as the only reducing agent and stabilizer under mild aqueous conditions. The AgNPs were tightly adhered to the CNF surface, and the resulting stable CNF–AgNP suspension can be used for rapid and selective detection of l-cysteine (Cys). The efficacy of the process relies upon the surface plasmon resonance properties of AgNPs and the aggregation effect of AgNPs in the presence of Cys. Under optimal ionic strength provided by NaCl, Cys interacted with AgNPs, leading to a change in yellow color of the CNF–AgNP to purple. The colloidal suspension showed high sensitivity (limit of detection of 49 nM) and rapid (5 min) and selective detection of Cys among 20 amino acids that make up human proteins, hence demonstrating great potential for analyzing practical samples.

Role of cellulose-based composite materials in synergistic reinforcement of environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane

Pingbo Zhang,Yadong Lu,Mingming Fan,Pingping Jiang,Yanmin Bao,Xuewen Gao,Jialiang Xia

In this study, a graft modified Octa(aminopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OPOSS)/ TEMPO-oxidized cellulose microfibrils (TOCMF) nanocomposite material (named PC) was prepared by a simple peptide-forming reaction to overcome the disadvantages of nanocellulose materials which have limited their application in environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethanes. The modified vegetable oil-based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was prepared by reacting the excess amino group on the POSS with the -NCO group on the polyurethane matrix in the in-situ polymerization, in which the POSS particles function as a button-like bond between the oxidized cellulose and the polyurethane matrix. And the similar filamentous structure of TOCMF to the linear polyurethane matrix structure could greatly weaken the negative impact of the rigid structure of POSS particles on processability (Elongation at break). The performance test results showed that the mechanical properties, thermal stability and water resistance of the modified WPU composite film are greatly improved by the synergistic effect of the two nano materials. The initial decomposition temperature and water contact angle of the WPU composite film with a PC content of 0.7 wt.% were increased by 41.9 °C and 10°, respectively. Especially, the tensile strength of WPU/PC-0.7 wt.% was twice that of pure WPU.

Biocompatible smart cellulose nanofibres for sustained drug release via pH and temperature dual-responsive mechanism

Yuting Liang,Hongxiang Zhu,Lei Wang,Hui He,Shuangfei Wang

Biocompatible smart dual-responsive cellulose nanofibres were designed and prepared by grafting a temperature and pH dual-responsive polymer (PEI-NIPAM: polyethyleneimine– N -isopropylacrylamide) on cellulose nanofibres (CNF-COOH). The smart cellulose nanofibres showed good antibacterial activity (above 99%) against Escherichia coli and excellent biocompatibility based on acute systemic toxicity, in vitro cytotoxicity, skin irritation, and skin sensitisation analyses. CNF-PEI-NIPAM showed an excellent dual-response performance to pH and temperature, affording the CNF-PEI-NIPAM aerogel with a high loading capacity (330.12 mg/g) for doxorubicin and a high cumulative release rate (59.45 %) at 37 °C and pH 3. These advantages enable the smart cellulose nanofibres to be applied in the fields of food and biomedicine. Interestingly, the interaction between the collapse and expansion of the dual-responsive polymer molecular chains on the CNF-COOH was revealed based on in situ characterisation of the solid materials, which is valuable for the structural design and application of cellulose-based dual-responsive smart nanofibres.

Ultralight and robust aerogels based on nanochitin towards water-resistant thermal insulators

Youxian Yan,Fang Ge,Yu Qin,Mengya Ruan,Zeyong Guo,Chuanxin He,Zhongkai Wang

The development of lightweight, strong and high-performance thermal insulators from renewable biomass are highly desired for sustainable development. Here, ultralight aerogels based on renewable nanochitin with outstanding mechanical properties, excellent water-resistant, and promising thermal insulation properties are fabricated. The pristine nanochitin aerogels (PNCAs) assembled from mechanically strong carboxylated chitin nanorods are firstly prepared through acid-induced gelation and supercritical drying. The resultant PNCAs present tunable density (10−50 mg/cm 3 ) and strong mechanical stiffness (the specific compression modulus of 30.2 MPa cm 3 /g) combining with low thermal conductivity (27.2 mW/m K). After a facile silylation modification, the silylated nanochitin aerogels (SNCAs) exhibit hydrophobic behavior (contact angle >130°), improved compression performance (the specific compression modulus of 65 MPa cm 3 /g), and promising thermal insulation property (30.5–35.8 mW/m K). Moreover, the silylated aerogel shows a negligible loss of mechanical performance when exposed to water for 12 h at 35 °C.

Preparation of sugarcane bagasse nanocellulose hydrogel as a colourimetric freshness indicator for intelligent food packaging

Peng Lu,Yang Yang,Ren Liu,Xin Liu,Jinxia Ma,Min Wu,Shuangfei Wang

A sugarcane bagasse nanocellulose-based hydrogel was developed as a colourimetric freshness indicator for monitoring spoilage of chicken breast. Nanocellulose was prepared from sugarcane bagasse cellulose filaments by TEMPO-mediated oxidation, and then used to form a strong self-standing hydrogel matrix through Zn 2+ cross-linking. The hydrogel worked as a carrier for pH-responsive dyes (bromothymol blue/methyl red), which changed colour according to the freshness of the chicken sample. CO 2 levels were found to increase with the spoilage of chicken, relative to rising levels of micro-organisms. The indicator hydrogel optical colour changed from green to red on the third day, as the log CFU/g passed the limit of acceptability for human consumption and emission of complicated volatiles. This new design of colourimetric freshness indicator made with a nanocellulose hydrogel has a quick response to chicken spoilage and is expected to facilitate the utilisation of bagasse nanocellulose as a value-added material in intelligent packaging.

A stretchable, self-healing conductive hydrogels based on nanocellulose supported graphene towards wearable monitoring of human motion

Chunxiao Zheng,Kaiyue Lu,Ya Lu,Sailing Zhu,Yiying Yue,Xinwu Xu,Changtong Mei,Huining Xiao,Qinglin Wu,Jingquan Han

Stretchable, self-healing and conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention for wearable strain sensors, which are highly required in health monitoring, human-machine interaction and robotics. However, the integration of high stretchability, self-healing capacity and enhanced mechanical performance into one single conductive hydrogel is still challenging. In this work, a type of stretchable, self-healing and conductive composite hydrogels are fabricated by uniformly dispersing TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs)-graphene (GN) nanocomposites into polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel through an in-situ free radical polymerization. The resulting hydrogels demonstrate a stretchability (∼850 %), viscoelasticity (storage modulus of 32 kPa), mechanical strength (compression strength of 2.54 MPa, tensile strength of 0.32 MPa), electrical conductivity (∼ 2.5 S m −1 ) and healing efficiency of 96.7 % within 12 h. The hydrogel-based strain sensor shows a high sensitivity with a gauge factor of 5.8, showing great potential in the field of self-healing wearable electronics.

Preparation and characterization of highly transparent hydrophobic nanocellulose film using corn husks as main material

Qifeng Chen,Jieyi Xiong,Guangxue Chen,Taiyan Tan

In this paper, nanocellulose was extracted from agricultural waste corn husks. Transparent hydrophobic membranes containing silica were fabricated through two facile methods including surface coating and internal grafting. The results showed that: the nanocellulose prepared by TEMPO-mediated oxidation and high pressure homogenization not only retained the type and crystal structure of the original cellulose , but also increased the crystallinity to 64.5% and improved the thermal stability . Both surface coating and internal grafting methods had successfully loaded silica onto films. The internal grafting film had a silica content of 10.5%, which was mainly present inside the film. The light transmittance of this film was 84.4% and the surface contact angle to water was 152.6°. The content of silica on the surface coating film was 5.7%, and they were mainly distributed on the surface of the film to form a nano-scale rough surface. The light transmittance of the surface coating film was 87.8% and the surface contact angle to water was 165.7°. Compared to the film prepared by internal grafting method, the nanocellulose film prepared by surface coating method contained less nano silica and had better properties including higher transparency, higher surface roughness and excellent hydrophobic anti-fouling properties.

Facile one-pot synthesis of self-assembled nitrogen-doped carbon dots/cellulose nanofibril hydrogel with enhanced fluorescence and mechanical properties

Xueqi Chen,Zihui Song,Shaopeng Li,Nguyen Tat Thang,Xing Gao,Xinchao Gong,Minghui Guo

The preparation and functionalization of biomass-based hydrogels that can be used in the field of biomedicine have received an increasing amount of attention. Carbon dots are a kind of fluorescent carbon nanomaterial with stable fluorescence emission and low biotoxicity, therefore the introduction of carbon dots into the biomass-based hydrogel can make it have a broader application prospect. In this work, fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots/cellulose nanofibril composite hydrogel (NCDs/CNF-gel) with exceptional mechanical properties was successfully fabricated by a facile one-pot green hydrothermal treatment. The properties of NCDs/CNF-gel prepared at different temperatures and CNF concentrations were investigated by electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectroscopy, rheology, and mechanical tests. NCDs/CNF-gel with injectable, pressure-resistance and excellent fluorescence properties can be obtained by controlling the hydrothermal treatment temperature. Furthermore, the self-assembly mechanism of NCDs in the hydrogel network and the improvement mechanism of hydrogel compressive strength were explored. The NCDs/CNF-gel exhibited acid-resistant and alkaline sensitive blue-green fluorescent emission. The outstanding biocompatibility, excellent fluorescence and mechanical properties of NCDs/CNF-gels, and their facile fabrication render these so-prepared gels promising candidates for future biomedical applications.

Microgels prepared from corn starch with an improved capacity for uptake and release of lysozyme

Ying Ji

The combination of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidization and annealing was applied to modify structural properties of corn starch in order to obtain starch polymer microgels. Microgels were characterized by X-ray diffraction, ATR-FTIR and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The effects of microgels on the uptake and release of lysozyme were also analyzed. The formation of oxidized microgels through the crosslinking between starch molecules and sodium trimetaphosphate was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The ATR-FTIR analysis suggested that TEMPO-oxidation results in the formation of carboxyl groups. TGA data indicated that oxidized-annealed microgels had less thermal stability than oxidized microgels. Furthermore, the oxidized-annealed microgels had an improved capacity for uptake and release of lysozyme. At this stage of the exploration, microgels prepared from corn starches by annealing and oxidation is simple and efficient.

Transparent, flexible and recyclable nanopaper-based touch sensors fabricated via inkjet-printing

Hao Ling,Ruwei Chen,Quanbo Huang,Feng Shen,Yuyuan Wang,Xiaohui Wang

Transparent, flexible, and eco-friendly touch sensors are important components for next-generation green electronics such as wearable sensors and e-skins. However, most current touch sensors, which are based on plastics or glass substrates and indium tin oxide or metal microelectrodes, are not environmentally friendly, as well as being difficult to recycle and expensive. Here, we demonstrate that a green, transparent, flexible, and recyclable nanopaper-based touch sensor (NPTS) can be fabricated via inkjet printing a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-doped polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), on cellulose nanofibril paper. The materials cost of a single-keypad NPTS with a size of 3.5 cm × 2.5 cm × 0.05 mm is only $0.060. Good printability, excellent transparency (80% at 400 nm), and high conductivity (1360 S cm−1) were achieved with the PEDOT:PSS microelectrodes when using a newly developed, eco-friendly water-based ink formulation. It takes only 3–4 weeks for the NPTS to degrade completely in natural soil. A four-keypad NPTS was demonstrated by interfacing with the Arduino UNO development board. Folding, bending, and multiple finger-touch trials caused only slight capacitive changes to the NPTS, with no loss of function. The facile fabrication of the NPTS will be invaluable for many practical applications where eco-friendly, transparent, flexible, durable, recyclable, and economical touch-control is required.

Ultralight, highly compressible, hydrophobic and anisotropic lamellar carbon aerogels from graphene/polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanofiber aerogel as oil removing absorbents

Lijie Zhou,Zhaoyang Xu

In increasingly serious marine pollution environment, environmentally friendly low-density aerogels have become potential oil-water separation materials. However, many reported aerogels have the drawbacks of low oil absorption, poor compressibility and flexibility, which limit their application. Herein, we reported a compressible, anisotropic lamellar hydrophobic and lipophilic graphene/polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanofiber carbon aerogel (a-GPCCA) prepared by directional freeze-drying and carbonization processes. The synthetic ultralight a-GPCCA had low density (6.17 mg/cm 3 ) and high porosity (99.61 %). Moreover, directional freeze-drying resulted in a lamellar interpenetrated three-dimensional porous structure, which endowed it with high adsorption capacity (155–288 times of its weight), good compressibility (95 % recovery after repeating 15 cycles at 50 % strain in parallel to the freezing direction) and recyclability (oil retention rate reached 88.8 % after 10 absorption-compression cycles). Furthermore, carbonization provided it with excellent thermal stability and hydrophobic properties, resulting in oil-water selectivity and combustion cyclicity (the oil absorption capacity was reduced by only 10.2 % after 10 absorption-combustion cycles). Therefore, the a-GPCCA obtained in this study possesses a promising potential in the field of treatment of offshore oil spills and domestic industrial wastewater.
