Abstract The hydrogen iodide decomposition reaction of the sulfur-iodine (SI) cycle is realized by electrolysis at room temperature to achieve efficient hydrogen production, while iodine is recycled throughout the SI reaction. In this work, we report a facile hydrothermal method for the synthesis of sulfur-doped titanium dioxide (S- \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) ) nanosheets with evenly distributed on the Ti foil (S- \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) /Ti). The noble metal-free S- \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) /Ti electrode demonstrates excellent electrochemical catalytic performance for iodine evolution reaction. It can deliver a high current density of 100 mA/ \(\hbox {cm}^2\) with a potential of 1.05 V, which is close to 90% of that of precious metal platinum and 5.6 times of bare Ti foil. Furthermore, the S- \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) /Ti electrode is stable in a mixed acid solution of HI and \(\hbox {H}_2\hbox {SO}_4\) . Compared to \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) /Ti, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis evidence a reduction in the band gap and work function of S- \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) /Ti due to the doping of sulfur. Correspondingly, the current efficiency approaches to 100% under the electrolysis constant voltage 1.30 V. Eventually, the detailed mechanism to describe the improvement of the electrocatalytic performance was suggested. Graphical abstract

This study investigated the high-temperature oxidation behaviors of TMC ceramics. The results indicate that the high-temperature oxidation curves of the four TMC ceramics follow a parabolic law, suggesting a diffusion-controlled process. The activation energies for the oxidation of TaC, NbC, TiC, and ZrC ceramics are 105.4, 124.3, 169.3, and 78.7 kJ/mol, respectively, with oxidation rate constants at 1000 °C of 16.84, 40.45, 0.18, and 14.43 mg 2 /cm 4 ·h for each ceramic, respectively. The temperatures at which the ceramics disintegrate into fragments in high-temperature air are 800, 800, >1000, and 600 °C, respectively. The anti-oxidation performance of the four TMC ceramics ranks as follows: TiC > TaC > NbC > ZrC. In comparison to the reported high-entropy carbide ceramics, the TiC ceramic in this study demonstrates superior anti-oxidation performance due to dense TiO 2 layer formation, characterized by significantly low oxidation rates and excellent structural stability.

Chlorine evolution anodes are widely used in industrial electrolysis, whose electrocatalytic activity and stability need to be improved urgently in order to improve energy efficiency. In this study, Ti/IrRuSnSbOx electrodes were fabricated by thermal decomposition of hydrosol precursor solution. The microstructure and electrochemical behavior of the electrodes were investigated by material characterization and electrochemical tests. The results showed that the electrode with a total oxide loading of 1.1 ± 0.5 mg/cm2 had the lowest chlorine evolution potential (1.068 V vs SCE), the lowest Tafel slope (41.08 mV dec–1), and a long accelerating lifetime (405 h). The hydrosol process effectively improved the performance of the electrode by promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies and strengthening the stability of the solid solution structure. This study provided a facile method for preparing chlorine evolution electrodes with low cost, high activity, and high stability.

The acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) faces great difficulty in concurrently addressing the site-specific activity and stability of the up-to-date choice Ir-based catalysts. Herein, we adopted a new inverse doping strategy to devise a Ti atomic doping into the surficial IrO x /Ir matrix to investigate the boosting effect of Ir-O-Ti motifs toward OER. Notably, only 1.92 wt % Ti introduction leads to 3.6 times and an order of magnitude improvement in intrinsic activity and stability, respectively, ascribed to the creation of abundant Ir-O-Ti motifs. While the Ti sites donate electrons to weaken the Ir-O interaction and thereby ignite Ir sites activity via adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), the restricted O–O bond formation in the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and the widened stable region of Ir species help enhance the stability. This work provides a novel insight into the reactivity of atomic-level interface motifs in heterogeneous components, which inspires further design of advanced catalysts.

In this work, a series of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets encapsulated NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) heterostructures (NM-125(Ti)@ZIS) have been rationally designed and established through a facile oil bath method. The photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and H 2 evolution performance on NM-125(Ti)@ZIS were elaborately modulated by adjusting the mass ratio of two components, introducing S vacancy and loading cocatalysts. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimized NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructure with mass ratio 3:1 of NM-125(Ti) to ZIS has an excellent Cr(VI) reduction performance in neutral solution, giving 98% reduction efficiency within 60 min. Moreover, the NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructure, following the introduction of sulfur vacancies and the incorporation of Pt nanoclusters , demonstrates an optimal visible light (λ > 420 nm) hydrogen evolution rate of 4.708 mmol/g/h, which is 5.82 times greater than that of pristine ZIS. A thorough investigation of the microstructures and photoelectrochemical properties of the NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructures reveals that the intimate contact interface, sulfur vacancy, and Pt nanocluster serve to effectively enhance charge separation efficiency, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Further analysis on the charges behavior at the interface verifies that a novel Z-scheme heterojunction has been constructed between ZnIn 2 S 4 and NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti).

The oxygen species in oxygen carriers directly influence the reaction performance in chemical looping processes. This paper describes the relationship between oxygen species and performance in chemical looping partial oxidation of methane (CLPOM) over LaNi x Ti 1- x O 3- δ ( x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) perovskites . Due to the increase of Ti substitution, the predominate reaction during CLPOM gradually changes from complete oxidation to partial oxidation. Quasi in situ XPS characterization suggests that the relative concentration of nucleophilic lattice oxygen species for partial oxidation increases with Ti substitution, while the relative concentration of electrophilic adsorbed oxygen species for complete oxidation decreases. The moderate Ti substitution for LaNi 0.5 Ti 0.5 O 3- δ provides the suitable lattice oxygen activity for the methane partial oxidation. Moreover, LaNi 0.5 Ti 0.5 O 3- δ exhibits high cyclic stability in redox cycles. This work demonstrates that the regulation of oxygen species distribution and activity is feasible to tailor the reaction performance of oxygen carriers in chemical looping processes.

Photocatalytic converting CO 2 into C 2 products is highly desirable but is extremely sensitive to catalyst structure. In this work, Ti-H species and oxygen vacancies are simultaneously integrated on hydrogenated SrTiO 3 surface by thermally treating with NaBH 4 , which promotes the activation of CO 2 into HCOO - and CO* intermediates. The proximity of oxygen vacancies and Ti-H species contributes to the C-C coupling of intermediates into acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) products. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example for the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into C 2 H 2 main products. The optimal hydrogenated SrTiO 3 has the C 2 H 2 yield of 39.0 μmol·g −1 with a 76.0 % selectivity among C 2 products. Therefore, this work provides an approach of designing the adjacent active sites for photocatalytic CO 2 conversion into C 2+ products.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received increasing attention for conducting miscellaneous photocatalytic reactions. Amorphous TiO 2 , despite the lack of visible light activity, can be a platform for integrating with a Ti-based MOF NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) during hydrothermal process. Herein, amorphous TiO 2 microspheres are synthesized to enhance the activity of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) by integration. The morphology, porosity, and activity of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/amorphous TiO 2 microspheres are systematically investigated by various methods. The photocatalyst NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/amorphous TiO 2 exhibits enhanced conversions, more than five times that of pristine NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti), for the selective oxidation of benzylamine. A series of optical and electrochemical characterizations are performed to clarify the mechanism for the photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzyl amines. Specifically, for NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/amorphous TiO 2 , visible light absorption is from NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti); and faster electron transfer to molecular oxygen is due to amorphous TiO 2 . This work shows that integrating MOFs with metal oxides can be crucial in enhancing visible light photocatalysis .

The development of polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis of water is mainly limited by the high cost of noble metals and inadequate stability owing to the slow reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction and the restrictions of strongly acidic operating environments. To improve the utilization of noble metals, we use Ti-doped SnO2 as a carrier to support active species IrO2. The results show that the introduction of Ti element can inhibit the grain growth and help to improve the electrical conductivity of SnO2. Electrochemical tests for the catalysts show that 40 wt % IrO2/TSO has the best mass-normalized charge (231.24 C g–1 IrO2) and current density (714.85 A g–1 IrO2) at 1.6 V with the overpotential of only 271 mV at 10 mA cm–2, which is attributed to the outstanding dispersion effect of Ti-doped SnO2 and the synergy between the active species and the introduction of Ti element. The comprehensive advantages exhibited by the Ti-doped SnO2 support provide an alternative solution to reduce the cost of noble metal catalysts by improving the catalytic activity and stability.

A novel liquid–liquid microdispersion method for the synthesis of TS-1 has been developed by continuous preparation of the precursor. In the novel process, the solution of TBOT in n-hexane could be very uniformly dispersed into the oligomeric silicate prehydrolysis mixture to form microdroplets by a microsieve pore reactor. Due to the fast mixing and very high mass transfer performance of the microdispersion process, the Ti species could be uniformly distributed into the mixture and were more likely to condense into the oligomeric silicate precursor species rather than appear with self-condensation. The prepared samples had a minimum molar ratio of Si/Ti at 51 without extra-framework Ti species. Furthermore, the solvent of n-hexane can be recycled by simple phase separation rather than evaporation under the conditions of using isopropanol, which reduced energy consumption. This continuous microdispersion technology could be controllable and a reliable scaling-up for the preparation of TS-1.

Though coating CsPbBr3 nanocrystal (NC) with an outer layer has been regarded as an effective strategy to address its instability issues, deep investigations into the electronic interaction between CsPbBr3 NC and coating layer have yet to be conducted. In this study, the dynamics of hot carrier and charge carrier of CsPbBr3 nanocrystal with various MO2 (M = Si, Ti, Sn) coating layers have been comprehensively studied. Combined transient optical characterizations (time-resolved photoluminescence and ultrafast transient absorption) and photoelectrochemical measurements reveal that coating with insulating SiO2 accelerates the hot carrier relaxation and enhances the radiative recombination by passivating surface traps, whereas efficient charge-carrier separation and extraction are observed after coating with SnO2 and TiO2. The electron injection from CsPbBr3 NC to SnO2 (1.14 × 108 s–1) is 2-fold faster than to TiO2 (5.4 × 107 s–1) owing to the lower conduction band edge and the higher electron mobility of SnO2. Particularly, the first time fabricated CsPbBr3 NC/SnO2 composite exhibits superior stability against UV light and moisture, as well as the best photocurrent response in this study. This work has implied that rational design of the coating layer for perovskite NC can not only improve the stability but also tailor the electronic and optoelectronic properties for various applications.
