Conjugating HA bundles with ZIF-8 for catalytic degradation of tetracycline and antibacterial capacity

Yingru Huang,Jiarui Ren,Yufeng He,Xiangbin Sun,Zhiyan Ma,Rongmin Wang

The overused of antibiotics had led to major environmental issues and drug-resistant bacteria, which inevitably harmed the environment and public health. In this work, in order to obtain environmentally friendly bi-functional materials to combat with residual antibiotics and bacterial contamination, ZIF-8, a typical Zn based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZnZIF) with excellent chemical stability, was conjugated to hydroxyapatite nanowire bundles (HAnBs) by a simple in-situ synthesis. The obtained ZnZIFs@HAnBs was characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS, FT-IR, XRD and BET. The effects of catalysts, catalyst dosage, TC initial concentration, PMS concentration and pH on TC degradation were investigated. Notably, ZnZIFs@HAnBs (94.0%) exhibited excellent degradation effect of tetracycline (TC) within 15   min, which was 1.7 and 5.2 times than that of ZIF-8 (55.9%) and HAnBs (18.1%) under optimal conditions, respectively. Moreover, after recycling 10 times, the degradation rate still more than 86.8%. The degradation mechanism was confirmed by free radical quenching experiment coupling with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the 1 O 2 and O 2 •- were the major reactive oxygen species in TC degradation. Furthermore, it presented excellent antibacterial activity (95.0%) against E. coli and S. aureus , which was attributed to the synergistic effect of sustained release of Zn 2+ and phosphate in ZnZIF@HAnBs. In summary, an eco-friendly bi-functional materials of HA nanowire bundles could be synthesized by simple strategy, and it could be applied in the fields of environmental remediation, as well as in treatment of antibiotic and bacterial pollution.

CO2/N2 separation using a ceramic membrane contactor and ZIF-8 in [TEPA][MIm]

Zhaohao Li,Tianjing An,Jiaxi Yang,Dan Gao,Hongyuan Zhang,Heng Zhang

Capturing CO 2 from the flue gas in the power plant is an important measure to realize the low-carbon combustion of the fossil energy. This paper presents a novel technique which combines traditional methods of the chemical absorption, the physical adsorption and the membrane absorption. The ionic liquid ([TEPA][MIm]) is utilized to improve the CO 2 absorption performance and reduce the energy consumption. While the porous skeleton (ZIF-8) is added to the ionic liquid to reduce the viscosity while introducing the physical adsorption. Moreover, the hydrophobic ceramic membrane is utilized as the separation interface between the gas phase and the liquid phase, which can avoid the entrainment and overflow of the liquid phase while increasing the specific surface area. In terms of the material preparation and the characterization, the addition of ZIF-8 does not destroy the original chemical composition of [TEPA][MIm]. The average contact angle of the hydrophobic ceramic membrane is 140.55°, and the failure temperature is greater than 400 K, which conforms to the application situation of the power plant. In terms of the CO 2 capture and the desorption performance, the maximum CO 2 capture amount reaches 2.03 mol/mol. The temperature of complete desorption is 70 °C. Furthermore, the capture performance after five cycles can reach 80 % of the initial performance. The performance is better than that of the CO 2 capture technology utilizing the traditional monoethanolamine solution.

ZIF-8 incorporated polyether block amide membrane for phenol permselective pervaporation with high efficiency

Chuan Ding,Xinru Zhang,Chuncheng Li,Xiaogang Hao,Yonghong Wang,Guoqing Guan

In recent years, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has received tremendous attention due to its hydrophobic inner channels and good compatibility with the polymer as an inorganic filler for preparation of the mixed matrix membrane (MMM). In this study, ZIF-8 particles were synthesized and incorporated into Ploy (ether block amide) matrix (PEBA-2533) to fabricate a MMM for the enhancement of phenol permselective pervaporation. The structure and morphology of ZIF-8 particle and the obtained MMMs were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, contact angle and BET. It is found that the hydrophobicity of the membrane was enhanced by the incorporation of hydrophobic ZIF-8, and the obtained MMM withstand the extreme operation conditions of pervaporation. The effects of particle loading amount, feed concentration and temperature on the separation performance of ZIF-8 incorporated MMMs were investigated in details. Compared with the pure PEBA-2533 membrane, the permeate flux of ZIF-8 incorporated PEBA-2533 MMM with a 10   wt% loading amount was significantly increased from 846   g   m −2   h −1 to 1310   g   m −2   h −1 , while the separation factor increased from 39 to 53 at 70   °C with 8000   ppm feed phenol concentration. The enhancement of the pervaporation performance could be mainly attributed to the preferential highly permeable regions of the bimodal membrane structure for phenol molecules, which was consisted of ZIF-8 particles. Finally, both of the excellent overall membrane pervaporation performance and the long-term revealed that such a ZIF-8 incorporated MMM has a great potential in separation and recovery of phenol from its aqueous solution for a practical process.

Microwave synthesis of tubular zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 membranes for CO2/CH4 separation

Yaqiong Zhu,Qian Liu,Aisheng Huang

The separation of CO2/CH4 is reported in detail by using zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) membrane which was prepared on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified Al2O3 tube through microwave heating synthesis. Attributed to the preferential adsorption affinity of CO2 over CH4 and a narrow pore window of 0.34 nm, the ZIF-8 membrane shows high separation performances for the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures. For the separation of equimolar CO2/CH4 mixture at 100°C and 2 bar feed (1 bar permeate) pressure, a CO2 permeance of 1.02 × 10−8 mol/m2· s· Pa and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 6.8 are obtained, which is promising for CO2 separation.

Synthesis of hybrid nanocomposites of ZIF-8 with two-dimensional black phosphorus for photocatalysis

Lian Wang,Qingchi Xu,Jun Xu,Jian Weng

Zeolitic imidazolate framworks-8 (ZIF-8) and two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) are frequently studied for their outstanding properties and wide applications. Therefore, integrating these two components into hybrid nanocomposites is conceivable to build a hybrid nanomaterial with enhanced or even new properties. In this paper, a novel hybrid nanocomposite of ZIF-8 with few-layer two-dimensional (FL-BP) (ZIF-8/BP) is prepared for the first time. The obtained ZIF-8/BP hybrid composites are composed of ZIF-8 nanoparticles uniformly distributed over the whole BP nanosheets. The in situ growth of ZIF-8 is attributed to FL-BP functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), whose pyrrolidone rings (CO) enhance the affinity between Zn ions and FL-BP, and in turn facilitate ZIF-8 in situ growth on the surface of BP. Furthermore, the obtained ZIF-8/BP hybrid nanocomposites demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic performance, for the highly efficient charge separation and transfer during photocatalytic reactions.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/ZIF-8-NH2 mixed matrix membranes for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation

Hao Zhang,Yan Wang

Ethanediamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 particles (ZIF-8-NH 2 ) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF-8-NH 2 loading in the MMMs is studied and the MMM with a 7.5 wt % ZIF-8-NH 2 loading shows the best pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration at 40°C. Various characterization techniques (Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, sorption test, etc.) are used to investigate the MMMs loaded with ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-NH 2 particles. The impact of operation conditions on pervaporation performance is also performed. The performance benchmarking shows that the MMMs have superior separation factors and comparable flux to most other PVA hybrid membranes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 62: 1728–1739, 2016

Enhancing contaminant rejection efficiency with ZIF-8 molecular sieving in sustainable mixed matrix membranes

Shuping Wu,Weijian Shi,Lijuan Cui,Chao Xu

Compared to pure polymer membranes and inorganic membranes, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) loaded with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit higher permeability and selectivity. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) is widely regarded as the most promising candidate for separation membrane materials due to its precise molecular sieving properties. However, there is an urgent need for scalable fabrication methods to produce flexible and sustainable MOF MMMs, which is largely unmet. Here, we report a non-solvent induced phase separation-spin coating (NIPS-SC) strategy for the preparation of highly permeable MOF MMMs. A porous support layer is formed by non-solvent induced phase separation of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and ZIF-8 are then coated on the PVDF support layer to synthesize the symbiotic and continuous MMM membrane. The synthesized membrane shows excellent separation performance for organic dye and heavy metal ions, as well as significant stability. The water permeate flux of the membrane is 342 L m –2  h −1 bar −1 . The micron-scale in the support layer facilitates rapid water permeation, while the porous ZIF-8 provides enhanced solute rejection selectivity. This strategy paves the way for the development of high-performance membranes for water purification.

Degradation of thiosulfate ions in sodium aluminate solution photocatalyzed by Co-TiO2@ZIF-8

Jingyi Hao,Binchuan Li,Jing Dai,Daxue Fu,Yongfeng Chang,Jianshe Chen,Na Xu,Kuiren Liu,Qing Han

The strongly alkaline sodium aluminate solution generated from high-sulfur bauxites during their refinement through the Bayer process contains sulfur, mainly in the form of thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2− ) ions, which affects the quality of the target product (alumina). Consequently, the large-scale use of high-sulfur bauxites is severely limited, and methods of desulfurizing sodium aluminate solutions are urgently needed. To address this need, we herein prepared metal–organic framework (ZIF-8)-supported Co-doped TiO 2 (Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8) using a sol–gel method and low-temperature calcination under N 2 and examined the ability of this composite to photocatalyze the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate ions in sodium aluminate solutions. Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 retained the large specific surface area and rich porosity of ZIF-8, which reduced the agglomeration of TiO 2 particles on the surface. The loading of Co-TiO 2 endowed Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 with a mesoporous structure and thus increased its adsorption capacity. Compared with ZIF-8, Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 featured new functional groups, and the formation of Zn–C and N–Ti–O bonds confirmed the successful integration of Co-TiO 2 with the ZIF-8 carrier. Consequently, the thiosulfate removal rates by Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 were 42 % and 26 % higher than those observed for the blank sample and pure TiO 2 (light source = xenon arc lamp, oxidant = O 3 , reaction time = 60 min), respectively. This high performance is primarily due to Co doping, which enhanced the efficiency of visible light utilization, and the photogenerated electron–hole pairs on the photocatalyst surface and hydroxyl radicals formed by the interaction of holes with the solution-phase OH − ions.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Apigenin Using a Paper-Based Sensor with ZIF-8@MXene

Pang Wanyu,Gao Yali,Chang Xile,Du Guodong,Hu Zhiyong,Hu Tuoping,Ma Xuemei

An ultra-sensitive paper-based sensor for the rapid and specific detection of apigenin in Scutellaria barbata D. Don was developed. The construction process of the proposed apigenin sensor was to grow ZIF-8 in situ with MXene as a template on carbon paper (CP) electrode. The MXene with excellent conductivity and ZIF-8 with porous structure showed synergistic effect in promoting electron transfer and increasing the number of binding sites, thus providing a highly sensitive detection for apigenin. Under optimal conditions, the sensor showed an excellent linear relationship in the range of 0.01 to 10 µM, with a detection limit of 2.6 nM. This study not only constructed a new sensing platform for sensitive detection of apigenin, but also provided a new method for the detection of apigenin in Scutellaria barbata D. Don, which was of great significance for promoting the construction of an electrochemical sensor for apigenin.

Heterostructure ZIF-8@MXene with sieving effect in mixed matrix membranes for CO2 separation

Qingping Xin,Sining Kong,Xueting Cao,Yucheng Pan,Kun Wan,Hao Chen,Huimin Jin,Ningning Gao,Xiaoli Ding,Yuzhong Zhang

At the present time, the realm of gas separation membranes is predominantly centered on the development of membrane materials that simultaneously exhibit exceptional gas permeability and selectivity. Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs) hold significant promise in addressing the long-standing challenge of balancing membrane selectivity with permeability. By incorporating a molecular sieving mechanism, an enhanced gas separation process is achieved. In this research endeavor, single-layer MXene nanosheets serve as an ideal substrate for the direct growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles, yielding heterogeneously structured nanofillers, coined ZIF-8@MXene. The composite filler, ZIF-8@MXene, maintains a two-dimensional lamellar structure reminiscent of MXene, while also integrating ZIF-8 nanoparticles with their optimal pore size of 3.4 Å. This optimal pore size efficiently facilitates the unimpeded passage of CO 2 molecules through the channels, creating a preferential pathway. Conversely, N 2 molecules encounter greater difficulty traversing these channels, effectively coupling the solubility-diffusion mechanism with the molecular sieving mechanism to enhance selectivity in gas separation processes. Consequently, the mixed matrix membrane exhibits a remarkable enhancement in gas selectivity. Particularly, under sub-ambient conditions (−20 °C), the PEO/ [email protected]  % membrane achieves an exceptional CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 294.1, accompanied by a high CO 2 permeability of 115.58 Barrer. This outstanding performance surpasses the 2019 upper bound, underscoring the significant potential of heterostructured nanofillers to be harnessed in advancing various mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) towards high-performance gas separation capabilities.

Hydrophobic ZIF-8 nanoparticles loaded on chitosan for improved methanol adsorption from fermented wine

Mibin Lin,Jia Sha,Zhonghao Zhu,Penghui Ye,Kai Zhao,Kaijun Xiao

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for the adsorption of minor molecular alcohols in the vapor phase. However, the drawbacks of powdered MOFs, including low recyclability and problematic separation, limit their application in fermented wine. Chitosan (CS) is a low-cost, eco-friendly, moldable matrix used in the food industry. In this study, a novel CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent with excellent microporous surface area was successfully synthesized by incorporating hydrophobic ZIF-8 into CS. The results showed that CS@ZIF-8 beads had a high adsorption affinity for methanol at a Zn 2+ /2-methylimidazole molar ratio of 1:5. The adsorption mechanism of methanol on CS@ZIF-8 beads was systematically studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, isotherms, and kinetics. The Langmuir model calculated the maximum adsorption of methanol to 56.8 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics are consistent with pseudo-second-order models. Furthermore, CS@ZIF-8 beads presented excellent recyclability for removing methanol for five consecutive cycles. It could treat 60 bed volumes of Chinese yellow wine in column filtration experiments to make the concentration below 50 mg/L. In summary, the highly efficient CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent has great potential for methanol adsorption from fermented wines. Practical Application Methanol will exhibit adverse symptoms such as weakness and headaches after it is ingested. Therefore, methanol control is an important safety factor in the production of fermented wine. The adsorption method is recognized as a widely used technique due to its high efficiency and selectivity. The CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent synthesized in this paper provides a new idea for methanol removal.

Design and evaluation of photothermal and chemical multimodal antibacterial agents based on ZIF-8

Jiaojiao Luo,Yifan Liang,Jian-Ying Lin,Huiling Fan

Bacterial infections pose a significant threat to global public health, and the presence of bacterial biofilms complicates the treatment of these infections. Therefore, the development of materials with both antibacterial and antibiofilm properties is crucial. In this study, we designed a composite material that combines chemical and photothermal antibacterial functions using a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and protocatechuic acid (PCA). PCA-ZIF was synthesized by immersing ZIF-8 in a PCA solution, followed by surface encapsulation with polydopamine (PDA) through dopamine polymerization to enhance its photothermal therapy potential. This process yielded PCA-ZIF@PDA, which can generate localized hyperthermia and gradually release PCA to achieve multimodal antibacterial activity. The structure of the composite was characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET, and its photothermal performance under 808 nm laser irradiation, drug release profile, and in vitro antibacterial efficacy were also evaluated. The results indicated that the immersion of PCA did not alter the crystal structure of ZIF-8, however, the polydopamine (PDA) coating significantly reduced its crystallinity. The PCA loading capacities were measured at 253.7 mg⋅g −1 for PCA-ZIF and 209.2 mg⋅g −1 for PCA-ZIF@PDA. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the 1 mg⋅mL −1 sample under 808 nm irradiation was found to be 61.4 %. Under near-infrared irradiation and acidic conditions (pH 5.0), the cumulative drug release from PCA-ZIF@PDA reached 91 % after 12 h. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that PCA-ZIF@PDA effectively killed E. coli and S. aureus , inhibited their growth, and significantly prevented biofilm formation.
