The fabrication of an efficient photoFenton system without the addition of H 2 O 2 is still a challenge and is cost-effective and favorable for practical applications. In this work, a core@shell Z-scheme heterojunction nanoreactor was successfully fabricated, in which hierarchical two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets are coated on defective iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe)), realizing efficient in-situ evolution of H 2 O 2 and constructing an optimal heterogeneous Fenton platform. The degradation rates of defective NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe)@ZnIn 2 S 4 (0.4 g L −1 ) for bisphenol A and ofloxacin under visible light irradiation within 180 min reached 99.4% and 98.5%, respectively, and the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency was approximately 502 μmol h −1 g −1 . The excellent photoFenton performance was attributed to the introduction of ligand defects into the MOF, which can adjust the band structure to enhance the light absorption capacity, and the in-situ generation of H 2 O 2 accelerating the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ conversion. In addition, the formation of the core@shell nanoreactor Z-scheme heterojunction structure promoted spatial charge separation. This strategy offers new ideas for constructing efficient photocatalysis and photoFenton systems.

The molecular oxygen activation (MOA) process tends to be the rate-limiting step for photocatalytic selective organic transformation such as aromatic alcohol oxidation . Herein, using the plasmonic 0D/2D W 18 O 49 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (WOZ) heterojunctions as a model system, we firstly shed light on the ultra-efficient MOA origin of the synergism of photothermal effect and continuous hot electrons injection through both experimental and DFT calculations. This synergistic action not only enhances the generation rate of •O 2 ¯ and reduces the activation energy barrier, but also significantly increases the adsorption of the O 2 and activates it more easily, thus achieving efficient photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. Meanwhile, the charge separation and transfer processes involved in O 2 activation can be further optimized with the Z-scheme transfer route. This work would provide an exciting opportunity to construct more active photothermal catalysts with ultra-high efficiency of MOA for a wide variety of organic transformations with solar energy.

A photo-driven self-powered aptasensor was constructed based on a matching capacitor and the ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 heterojunction as the photoanode and Cu2O as the photocathode in a dual-photoelectrode sensing matrix for multiple signal amplification for the ultrasensitive detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR). The introduction of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the photoanode surface can not only accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, thus enhancing the output signal of the photo-driven self-powered system, but also provide a larger specific surface area for the immobilization of the bio-recognition unit aptamer. More importantly, for a portable and miniaturized device, a micro-workstation with the size of a universal serial bus (USB) disk and a novel short-circuit current access was proposed to capture the instantaneous output electrical signal for real-time data tracking. In such a way, a sensitivity of 2.7 mA pM−1 was achieved when the matching capacitor was integrated into the self-powered system, which was 22 times that without a capacitor. After the interaction between MC-RR and the corresponding aptamer, a ‘signal-off’ detection configuration was formed via the steric hindrance effect. Therefore, such a multiple signal amplification system realized the ultrasensitive and selective determination of MC-RR successfully. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the self-powered aptasensor was 0.1 to 100 pM and the detection limit was 0.033 pM (S/N = 3). The aptasensor was applied to the detection of MC-RR in fish, exhibiting good reproducibility (≈3.88%), paving the way for detecting microcystins in real-life samples.

Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs)-based materials possess excellent photocatalytic efficiency; however, they often present a loss of photo-induced carriers and random active sites in electron transfer of heterojunctions , thus restricting the enhancement of hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution and their potential application. In this study, a micro-nano ZnIn 2 S 4 /BPQDs (MN-ZISBP) composite is constructed to enable specific orientation and self-distribution of photoelectrons transferred from ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) to BPQDs. The relationship between photoelectron transfer and H 2 evolution efficiency is investigated via experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. MN-ZISBP with a nanorod-like structure presents an H 2 evolution rate of 1207 μmol/g/h and is higher than that of the sheet-shaped (S-ZISBP, 1023 μmol/g/h) and flower-like composites (F-ZISBP, 744 μmol/g/h) under visible light irradiation. The MN-ZISBP composite with a lower conduction band level and larger specific surface area increases the number of active sites on BPQDs via “self-distribution” for H 2 evolution. Finally, the electron transfer direction and bonding orbitals of MN-ZISBP are calculated using the work function and density of states results to verify the above conclusions. The novel construction technique and photocatalytic mechanism of MN-ZISBP reported in this study provide significant insights into the BPQDs-based photocatalysts for H 2 evolution.

Environmental pollution and energy shortage are two major challenges facing humanity today. Photocatalytic technology, as a green and sustainable approach, is an important choice for effectively addressing these challenges. The formation of S-scheme heterojunctions and built-in electric fields can significantly improve the transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers, hence enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic reactions, which is greatly significant for improving the performance of photocatalysts. In this study, a photocatalyst CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 with a built-in electric field, which is an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, was prepared by a simple solvothermal method. CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 exhibited efficient visible-light-driven H 2 evolution from water, with a rate of 4.09 mmol g -1 h −1 , 3.60 and 2.80 times higher than that of CdS and ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively, and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 2.71 %. Moreover, it also showed performance in visible-light-driven degradation of various ECs, achieving degradation rates of 82.2 %, 80.9 %, and 81.5 % for tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin, respectively, within 40 min. It was confirmed that the successfully constructed S-scheme heterojunction can effectively separate photoinduced electron-hole pairs and suppress their recombination. The built-in electric field inside the composite material can effectively promote the movement of photoinduced charge carriers, thereby promoting the course of photocatalytic reactions. This study is positively significant for the development of novel efficient photocatalysts, exploration of new methods for environmental pollution control, and development of green hydrogen energy.

Semiconductor heterojunctions could accelerate carrier separation and transfer for improving light-to-hydrogen (LTH) conversion efficiency. However, the lack of tight and efficient interfacial charge cross in three-dimensional semiconductor-based heterojunctions limits their practical application and the relevant profound understanding of the interfacial charge delivery. In this work, porphyrin (Cu)-based COF with a highly conjugated structure was deposited onto three-dimensional (3D) ZnIn2S4 by a facile solvothermal method to prepare a 3D/2D ZnIn2S4@CuP–Ph COF heterojunction. The content-optimized ZnIn2S4@CuP–Ph COF composite showed an excellent LTH conversion rate of up to 2667.94 μmol g–1 h–1, about 13.5 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn2S4. The significantly meliorated photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergistically functioning contributors, that is, the fast interfacial charge transfer and the augmented light capturing capability after integration. Also, the work function results by DFT calculation reveals that the electrons of CuP–Ph COF (Φ = 4.41 eV) transfer from the interface electron delivery channels of the two components to ZIS (Φ = 7.03 eV) until the Fermi level of the two components reaches equilibrium. This moment, the work function of ZnIn2S4@CuP–Ph COF (Φ = 6.50 eV) lies between the two components, and an electron accumulation region is formed on the side of ZIS. Additionally, the free-energy barriers of hydrogen evolution dominated by ZnIn2S4@CuP–Ph COF (0.0955 eV) is much lower than that of ZnIn2S4 (0.1256 eV). This study possesses certain guiding significance for the design of organic–inorganic heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient LTH conversion.

The photocatalytic cooperative hydrogen evolution and alcohol oxidation process for producing of two valuable products is highly attractive strategy, but optimizing active sites and constructing dual-function photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity remains challenging. In this study, dual active sites photocatalysts of Co/N-doped graphitic carbon nanocages (CoNC)/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (ZIS) were successfully prepared, where the Co atom anchoring on N-doped carbon (Co-N structure) and Co nanoparticles (Co NPs) encapsulating in layered graphitic carbons, resulting in the simultaneous photocatalytic hydrogen production and selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. After regulating the active sites ratio of Co NPs/Co-N, the CoNC/ZIS exhibited an excellent hydrogen production rate (2334 μmol g⁻¹h⁻¹) and benzaldehyde production yield (2825 μmol g⁻¹h⁻¹), which were 9.0 times and 17.5 times than that of pure ZIS, respectively. The characterization results indicated that the Co-N structure served as electron-rich sites and Co NPs served as sites for dehydrogenation, promoting directed electron-hole migration and providing sufficient the optimum reaction sites for hydrogen evolution and benzyl alcohol oxidation. Furthermore, the CoNC optimized structure and interface environment of ZIS, by reducing the potential of the valence band edge and enhancing the adsorption energy for benzaldehyde, thereby effectively improving the selectivity for benzaldehyde (increased from 47.9 % to 99.2 %). Based on DFT calculations, that the synergy of interfacial Co-N structure and Co NPs played a critical role in the coupled photocatalytic system and enhanced photogenerated carrier utilization. This study suggests new avenues to the design of a dual-function photocatalyst for significantly improve the utilization efficiency of solar energy.

Photocatalytic water splitting represents a sustainable pathway for hydrogen production, yet the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts remains challenging. Herein, we report the in situ construction of a noble-metal-free coaxial core-shell 1D/3D heterojunction composed of paraotwayite-type α -Ni(OH) 2 nanowire (NIOH) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) for significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The unique 1D/3D architecture of NIOH@ZIS synergistically combines the advantages of both components: the 1D NIOH nanowires suppress charge recombination by shortening in-plane migration distances, while the 3D ZIS nanoflowers provide abundant active sites and prevent structural aggregation. Under full-spectrum irradiation, the optimized NIOH@ZIS-3 heterojunction achieves an exceptional hydrogen production rate of 7.682 mmol·g⁻¹ ·h⁻¹ , 7.8 times higher than pristine ZIS. Mechanistic studies reveal that the pn heterojunction charge transfer pathway, driven by the built-in electric field at the NIOH/ZIS interface, facilitates efficient separation and utilization of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the heterojunction exhibits robust stability over four photocatalytic cycles without performance degradation. This work provides a rational design strategy for high-performance, low-cost photocatalysts through structural and interfacial engineering.

Z-scheme photocatalyst was researched in recent years due to its bionic electron transfer structure, while there were still challenges on amount of electron-hole pairs and preservation of redox ability in above systems. In this work, a new dual Z-scheme MoO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /black phosphorus quantum dots (MZBP) heterojunction was constructed to solve above problems and employed for photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. According to the results, the H 2 generation efficiency of MZBP reached to 5.45 mmol/g/h under visible light irradiation, which were 10 and 1.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and MoO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (MZ) material, respectively. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) of MZBP was calculated as 13.2% at 420 nm, indicating its high energy conversion property. In general, the enhanced separation ability of photo-induced carriers and large redox surfaces of dual Z-scheme MZBP system played important roles for enhancement of H 2 evolution. According to the high-efficiency H 2 evolution performance and significant dual Z-scheme mechanism, the novel heterojunction was promising for more applications in photoelectric fields.

In this study, N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs)/ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 (TCN)/Ti photoanode was successfully prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal method and silica sol drop coating method, which was assembled with Cu x O/Cu cathode to construct photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to degrade organic pollutants and generate electricity. The photoanode material aims to promote the separation and uniform transfer of photogenerated electron through the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S-type heterojunction of 0D quantum dots. The PFC with N-CQDs-doped photoanode possessed strong power generation capacity (71.10·μW-cm −2 ) and high photoelectric conversion efficiency (0.098 %), which were 1.72 and 1.94 times that of the PFC with ZnIn 2 S 4 /tubular g-C 3 N 4 /Ti photoanode. It degraded more than 95 % of rhodamine B, 83.44 % of tetracycline and 50.66 % of bisphenol A within 30 min. The excellent performance of the developed PFC is attributed to the synergistic effect of different heterojunction in photoanode, and the improvement of absorption and utilization of visible light by doping N-CQDs. Both free radicals (•OH, •O 2 − ) and non-free radicals (h + , 1 O 2 ) were involved in the degradation process of pollutants. It is noteworthy that, due to the Schottky junction, the N-CQDs could act as electron warehouses to promote the production of H 2 O 2 , which could enhance the degradation effect. We believe that this research provides a new direction for the development and research work on efficient photoanodes. Synopsis N-CQDs was introduced into PFC photoanode to construct the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and S heterojunction to simultaneously realize efficient pollutants degradation and power generation.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), characterized by efficient light absorption and highly tunable electronic structures, exhibit substantial promise for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production. To solve the problem of severe photogenerated carrier recombination, the researchers proposed to construct step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions by combining COFs with metal sulfides (MS) to achieve effective separation and directional transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes. Herein, we deposited a bipyridine-linked COF (TpBpy) onto Ag-doped zinc indium sulfide (Ag-ZnIn 2 S 4 , denoted as Ag-ZIS) nanoflowers to construct an S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Employing room-temperature cation exchange engineering, atomic-level modulation of the ZIS lattice is achieved under mild conditions, inducing tunable bandgap narrowing and a red-shifted visible light absorption edge. Ag doping promotes the formation of S-scheme heterojunction and further optimizes the built-in electric field. The construction of the S-scheme heterojunction, which involves strong electronic coupling at the contact interface between Ag-ZIS and TpBpy COF, significantly reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers, enhances charge transfer efficiency, and forms an efficient electron transfer channel. The optimized photocatalyst, Ag-ZIS/TpBpy COF-2 (denoted as AZC-2) exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity from pure water, with H 2 O 2 yield reaching 4425 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This study highlights the great potential of ion doping strategies for advancing MS/COF-based S-scheme heterojunctions in solar-driven H 2 O 2 synthesis.

We demonstrate a composite photocatalyst for nitric oxide conversion, which consists of the Cu–Fe alloy and the Z-scheme of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and ZnIn2S4, and the excellent photocatalytic performance is 6.45-fold that of g-C3N4. Time-resolved photoluminescence confirmed the delay effect on the charge recombination. Transient absorption spectroscopy indicated that the heterojunction establishment was mainly due to the hole-trapping ability of ZnIn2S4. The combined effects of the Cu–Fe alloy were confirmed by the NO-specific adsorption and conversion experiments. The involved active species was examined via electron spin resonance. The density functional theory calculations revealed the molecular mechanisms of photocatalytic conversion of NO to NO3–. Therefore, g-C3N4|ZnIn2S4|CuFe has the potential to help meet the challenges in sustainable and efficient pollutant conversion.
