Heparin is a critical anticoagulant, yet its purification remains challenging. Most commercial adsorbents are derived from petroleum-based polymers, which may introduce microplastics into the human bloodstream during medical use, posing a potential health risk. Herein, we report a regenerated positively charged cellulose nanofibril (PCCNF)-based hydrogel as a green and efficient alternative for selective heparin extraction. With quaternary ammonium modification, PCCNFs capture ∼88% heparin within 1 min, which outperforms commercial Amberlite IRA-900. We then produce regenerated cationic cellulose (cCell) hydrogels through an ionic liquid (IL) dissolution and regeneration process from PCCNFs, and we demonstrate their high selectivity toward heparin even in the presence of protein contaminants and their excellent reusability over multiple cycles. Finally, the regenerated cCell hydrogels are fabricated into monodispersed spheres via electrospraying for column-based operations, and efficient heparin extraction is verified. This work highlights the potential of regenerated cellulose-based hydrogels as scalable, sustainable substitutes for conventional plastic adsorbents in the recovery of heparin and other polyelectrolytes.

Abstract Novel biomimetic zwitterionic phosphorylcholine (PC) modified bacterial cellulose (PCBC) membranes were prepared based on the Pudovik reaction of oxidized BC nanofiber clusters and then solution casting technology. Their chemical structure, morphology, hydrophilicity, mechanical and biocompatible properties were characterized and compared with non-modified BC membranes. The composition and morphology analysis of PCBC membranes confirmed the existence of zwitterionic PC groups on the membrane surfaces, and their nano-fibrous structure was kept. Compared with BC membranes, PCBC membranes exhibited better hydrophilicity, similar tensile strength, but decreased rupture strain. And PCBC membranes were non-hemolytic and non-cytotoxic like BC membranes. The anti-biofouling performance investigation revealed that PCBC membranes with zwitterionic surface showed significantly reduced protein adsorption for bovine serum albumin, as well as inhibited cell attachment for both L929 cells and macrophage RAW 264.7. The results strongly suggested that PCBC membranes with excellent cell fouling resistance are expected to be a promising anti-adhesion biomaterial. Graphic abstract

Collagen films have been widely used in the field of biomedical engineering. However, the poor mechanical properties of collagen have limited its application. Here, rod-like cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were fabricated and used to reinforce collagen films. A series of collagen/CNCs films were prepared by collagen solution with CNCs suspensions homogeneously dispersed at CNCs: collagen weight ratios of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10. The morphology of the resulting films was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the enhancement of the thermomechanical properties of the collagen/CNCs composites were demonstrated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical testing. Among the CNCs contents used, a loading of 7 wt % led to the maximum mechanical properties for the collagen/CNCs composite films. In addition, in vitro cell culture studies revealed that the CNCs have no negative effect on the cell morphology, viability, and proliferation and possess good biocompatibility. We conclude that the incorporation of CNCs is a simple and promising way to reinforce collagen films without impairing biocompatibility. This study demonstrates that the composite films show good potential for use in the field of skin tissue engineering. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part A: 102A: 1131–1139, 2014.

As a new two-dimensional material, MXene has caused extensive research in field of supercapacitor, electromagnetic shielding, strain sensing field due to its excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. MXene with good water dispersibility can be used as an ideal nano-material to enhance the conductivity of hydrogels. However, MXene is easy to accumulate in the hydrogel system, and there are rare articles on MXene hydrogels. In this paper, we combine cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and MXene to prepare CNC/MXene nanosheets and take advantage of CNC’s excellent dispersibility in water and the electrostatic repulsion between CNCs to avoid the accumulating of MXene and enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Based on it, we prepared a physical–chemical double crosslinking and double-network CNC/MXene hydrogel by in situ polymerization and cycle freeze-thaw method. The CNC/MXene hydrogel we prepared exhibited excellent mechanical properties; it could be stretched to 7 times its original length and could reach 1.025 MPa tensile stress. When the compression strain was 80%, the compression stress could reach 1.1 MPa. After unloading the compression pressure, it could rapidly return to its original length within 0.17 s, which would impact greatly on the practical application of CNC/MXene hydrogel. What's more, the conductivity of it was up to 0.4 S/m and the thermal conductivity was 0.38 W/mK. So, the hydrogel prepared by us has a wide range of application prospects in the fields of human motion monitoring, electronic skin, man–machine interface, etc.

In this study, ethyl cellulose was used as the second-phase polymer blended with polyurethane to make nanofibrous membrane as antibacterial strain sensor. The results indicated that ethyl cellulose could regulate the morphology of polyurethane through strong hydrogen bonding, which observably enhanced the nanofiber uniformity of polyurethane. Furthermore, rigid cellulose also remarkably improved the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the nanofibrous membrane. After being coated with silver nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes assisted by polydopamine (PDA), the membrane with outstanding bacteria inhibition performance exhibited outstanding sensitivity toward external mechanical stretching, as well as real-time motion of human body parts. The conductive composite membrane possessed sensitive and regular resistance feedback to 100 cycles of varied human motions. The cellulose in the nanofiber structure ensured the shape recovery and longtime use stability of the membrane. This study proposed a novel thinking for the construction of high performance strain sensor by rational introduction of rigid polysaccharide into the polymer matrix.

As a “green” displacing agent, nanocellulose is enriched, nontoxic, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly; therefore, the development and potential application of nanocellulose in oilfield chemistry have attracted widespread attention in recent years. In this study, a thermothickening copolymer synthesized in our laboratory called hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose-based graft (PHAD) copolymer was chosen to mix with Halocynthia roretzi Drasche-based cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs), and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added to improve the stability of the displacing agent. After the optimal SDS concentration was confirmed, PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions containing 0.05–0.15 wt % TCNCs can be stable for a long time. Hence, the rheological performance of dispersions containing 0.05–0.15 wt % TCNCs was investigated systematically, and the results revealed that the PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions had outstanding thermothickening ability, salt resistance, shear resistance, and viscoelastic property in a simulated oil reservoir circumstance, and the interaction mechanism among PHAD, TCNCs, and SDS was analyzed. Finally, a core flooding test was conducted, and the obtained data showed that the oil recovery of dispersion was 21.5%, which is higher than the control dispersion without TCNCs, confirming that the PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions have significant practical application prospects.

Portable power sources based on moisture-enabled electric generators (MEGs) have attracted extensive attention for outdoor applications due to their capability of harvesting energy without fixed water supplies. However, the low power density of conventional MEG limits its practical deployment. Herein, a galvanic effect-enhanced moisture-enabled electric generator (GEMEG) is reported, constructed on a nanoporous substrate by coating carbon black nanoparticles onto cellulose paper. The moisture-harvesting capability is further enhanced by drop-casting hygroscopic CaCl 2 . To boost energy output, a FeCl 3 -based galvanic cell is integrated into the negative electrode (moisture-absorbing side). The GEMEG demonstrates a stable open-circuit voltage of ≈0.99 V for over 120 h at 40≈55% relative humidity, with a volumetric power density of 98.04 µW cm −3 . Stacking 20 GEMEGs in parallel yields an areal power density of 10.74 µW cm −2 , representing a significant enhancement of 15.1% over state-of-the-art MEGs. Furthermore, 100 GEMEGs arranged in parallel (vertically) and series (horizontally) within a compact footprint (480 cm 2 ) and volume (24 cm 3 ) can directly power light - emitting diode (LED) and charge a mobile phone via a supercapacitor. The significantly enhanced power density and compact form factor demonstrate the strong potential of the sustainable GEMEGS for portable energy solutions in outdoor environments, such as mobile phone charging.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) self-assemble into cholesteric phase liquid crystals (CPLCs) at a critical concentration in aqueous suspension. The resulting helical structure is retained in the solid-state film, generating left-handed circularly polarized structural color. Optical materials based on CNC CPLCs have attracted extensive interest; however, their assembly is highly sensitive to environmental and interfacial conditions, complicating structural color control. This study investigates the effects of substrate surface properties—surface energy, water absorption, and contact angle—on the self-assembly of CNC photonic thin films. Responsive CNC-based cholesteric films were fabricated by incorporating glucose (Glc) and carbon black (CB) into CNC suspensions and co-assembling the mixture on printing paper via evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). The resulting films exhibit a left-handed helical architecture with birefringence and show high humidity response across the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) range. The CNC/Glc/CB composite films also demonstrate excellent stability and reversibility, offering a promising strategy for applications such as humidity sensing and information encryption. Graphical

Hydrogel wound dressing is a new type of biomaterial with great absorbent capacity, which has been extensively researched and its application in the field of biomedicine is common. In this study, we prepared a novel composite hydrogel made of hyaluronic acid (HA) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), both of them are natural polysaccharides . Then, the structure and properties of this composite hydrogel were characterized and tested. The results gained from these studies show that this composite materials have a series of excellent performance such as appropriate gelation time, good swelling ability, suitable water evaporation rate, well hemocompatibility and biological compatibility. In particular, the super absorbent capacity (the maximum swelling rate is 2888%), which is conducive to maintain a moist wound healing environment. Taking account of these properties, this hydrogel can be used clinically as a wound dressing.

In this work, 357 ionic liquids (ILs) formed from 17 cations and 21 anions were selected for evaluation of their ability to dissolve cellulose by COSMO-RS. In order to evaluate the predictive model and method, experimental measurements of the solubility of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in 7 of these ILs were also conducted. Predicted results from logarithmic activity coefficients were generally in good agreement with the experimental results. Three different models were used for describing cellulose, and the mid-monomer part of the cellotriose model was found to be closer to the experimental results than a neat glucose model and the model of the mid-dimer part of cellotetraose. Excess enthalpy calculations indicated that hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interactions between cellulose (i.e. the three cellulose models) and the 7 studied ILs are key factors for the solubility of cellulose, and the anions play a crucial role in the cellulose dissolution process. Importantly, the cations of methylimidazolium+, pyridinium+, ethylmorpholinium+ and methylpyrrolidinium+ structured with functional groups including ethyl, allyl, 2-hydroxylethyl, 2-methoxyethyl and acryloyloxypropyl, combined with anions Ac−, Dec−, HCOO−, Cl−, BEN−, DMPO4−, DEP−, DBP− and Br− were predicted to be the best for dissolving cellulose.

Abstract Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials are one of the most promising electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors. However, the development of a simple, green and low-cost strategy for their preparation is still highly challenging. In this study, we reported a simple and sustainable preparation of nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon (NHPC) by using cellulose as raw materials. A NaOH/urea (7:12) system acted as the solvent, activator, and dopant simultaneously. The resultant NHPC has a high BET specific surface area of 2245 m 2 g −1 , a typically porous architecture comprising of micro-, meso-, and macropores with an appropriate average pore size of 2.83 nm, as well as a suitable nitrogen-doping degree of 3 wt%. The unique features of NHPC afford an outstanding specific capacitance of 300 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , representing a new capacitive record among the cellulose-derived carbon electrodes reported so far. The NHPC//NHPC supercapacitor cell displays a high energy density of 17.2 Wh kg −1 at 452 W kg −1 , and maintains 12.1 Wh kg −1 at 4500 W kg −1 . High rate capability (81% of capacitance retention from 0.5 to 10 A g −1 ) and excellent cycling stability (5% loss after 10,000 cycles) have been also demonstrated. The facile and affordable synthesis route together with outstanding energy storage behavior endows the cellulose-derived NHPC with promising application for supercapacitors.

Lacking large pores and insufficient bioactivity are two critical disadvantages of bacterial cellulose (BC). In this study, a new type of coating, chondroitin sulfate (CS) modified with gelatin (Gel), was selected to modify porous bacterial cellulose (PBC) for improved biocompatibility. The PBC was fabricated by adding Gel microspheres in the culture medium of BC, and the PBC-CS/Gel scaffolds were prepared by immersing PBC in the CS solutions followed by Gel modification. The morphology, chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and in vitro cell behavior of the PBC-CS/Gel scaffolds were characterized. The mechanical test shows that the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the PBC scaffold were increased with the introduction of CS/Gel coatings. The in vitro cell studies show that the CS/Gel coatings significantly promote cell proliferation, adhesion, differentiation, and ingrowth into scaffolds. The PBC-CS/Gel scaffolds are expected to be used in tissue engineering.
