Design and Fabrication of Segmented GeTe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3 Thermoelectric Module with Enhanced Conversion Efficiency

Jun Pei,Jian-Lei Shi,Hezhang Li,Yilin Jiang,Jinfeng Dong,Hua-Lu Zhuang,Bowen Cai,Bin Su,Jincheng Yu,Wei Zhou,Bo-Ping Zhang,Jing-Feng Li

GeTe and (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 are two representative thermoelectric (TE) materials showing maximum performance at middle and low temperature, respectively. In order to achieve higher performance over the whole temperature range, their segmented one-leg TE modules are designed and fabricated by one-step spark plasma sintering (SPS). To search for contact and connect layers, the diffusion behavior of Fe, Ni, Cu, and Ti metal layers in GeTe is studied systematically. The results show that Ti with a similar linear expansivity (10.80 × 10 −6 K −1 ) to GeTe, has low contact resistance (3 µΩ cm 2 ) and thin diffusion layer (0.4 µm), and thus is an effective metallization layer for GeTe. The geometric structure of the GeTe/(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 segmented one-leg TE module and the ratio of GeTe to (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 are determined by finite element simulation method. When the GeTe height ratio is 0.66, its theoretical maximum conversion efficiency (η max ) can reach 15.9% without considering the thermal radiation and thermal/electrical contact resistance. The fabricated GeTe/(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 segmented one-leg TE module showed a η max up to 9.5% with a power density ≈ 7.45 mW mm −2 , which are relatively high but lower than theoretical predictions, indicating that developing segmented TE modules is an effective approach to enhance TE conversion efficiency.

Waste coffee biochar and bi-oil composite modified rejuvenated asphalt: Preparation, characterization, and performance evaluation

Qun Lu,Aimin Sha,Wenxiu Jiao,Ke Shi,Zhuosen Li,Yujing Chen,Peidong Du,Ze Peng,Ruimeng Song

In the realm of sustainable road construction, bio-oil has emerged as a promising and eco-friendly alternative for rejuvenating aged asphalt. Nevertheless, challenges arise due to poor stability, diminished performance at elevated temperatures, and limited anti-aging properties. This study introduces an innovative approach by blending biochar, obtained from the pyrolysis of waste coffee grounds, into bio-oil to create a composite modified regenerator. Initially, the study conducts a microscopic characterization of the biochar using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Subsequently, the rheological properties of this composite rejuvenated asphalt are evaluated across low, moderate, and high-temperature ranges using bending beam rheometer (BBR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) tests. Departing from the traditional emphasis on initial property restoration, it further delves into performance alterations after re-aging of rejuvenated asphalt through temperature sweep (TS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests, providing a comprehensive assessment of the anti-aging characteristics of rejuvenated asphalt. Additionally, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is employed to quantitatively analyze the changes in asphalt molecular weight distribution. The microscopic characterization reveals the development of a rough and porous structure within the biochar, facilitating enhanced adhesion and interaction between the rejuvenator and the asphalt binder. Moreover, bio-oil rejuvenated asphalt exhibits excellent low-temperature crack resistance and moderate-temperature fatigue resistance. Following the incorporation of biochar, notable enhancements in high-temperature rutting resistance and anti-aging properties are observed, validating the efficacy of the biochar with bio-oil composite modified regenerator. To achieve optimal performance outcomes, a biochar content of 6 % (as a proportion of aged asphalt), corresponding to a 1:1 ratio of biochar to bio-oil, is recommended. Under this condition, the properties of the composite modified rejuvenated asphalt demonstrate comparability to those of the original asphalt. In summary, this research underscores the potential for integrating waste coffee biochar material into infrastructure development, thereby promoting circular economy principles and advancing more sustainable construction practices.

Boosting electrochemical CO2 reduction by strong electronic interaction at the interface of Bi/SnO2 heterostructures

Zeyu Wang,Yaling Jia,Shangqing Zhao,Huiling Zheng,Antony Rajendran,Wen-Ying Li

SnO 2 -based materials are promising electrocatalysts for the conversion of CO 2 to formate however increasing their activity further is challenging due to the suboptimal CO 2 adsorption and activation capacity. The interfacial engineering has proven effective in modulating the electronic structure and adsorption behavior of electrocatalysts. Herein, a heterostructure Bi/SnO 2 was constructed for the CO 2 electroreduction to formate in which a formate Faraday efficiency of 94.9 % and single-pass carbon efficiency of 40.3 % were achieved at −1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 1.0 M KOH. During a 30-hour stability test, the current density was nearly constant without a significant decrease while the formate Faraday efficiency was maintained around 90 %. This remarkable activity is attributed to the strong electronic interaction arising from p–p orbital coupling at the Bi/SnO 2 interface, according to the experimental and theoretical investigations. The computational insights suggest that the p–p orbital coupling promotes the electron transfer from Bi to SnO 2 and optimizes the adsorption strength of the intermediate (*OCHO) to enhance the catalytic activity. The formation of *OCHO during formate generation was confirmed by the i n situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. This work might contribute key insights into the mechanisms underlying activity enhancement via strong electronic interaction between dual p- block metal catalysts.

Defect clusters and grain boundary induced giant dielectric response in (Nb+Bi) co-doped TiO2 ceramics

Dan Zhong,Zhiyong Liu,Qifang Ruan,Kun Guo,Bing Xie,Pu Mao,Haijun Sun

High dielectric loss and temperature-dependent dielectric constant are the main obstacles limiting the application of giant dielectric materials in microelectronic devices. Here, (Nb 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) x Ti 1- x O 2 (NBTO- x ) ceramics modified by defect cluster synergistic interfacial effects were designed to improve the dielectric properties, and the mechanism of the giant dielectric behavior was thoroughly investigated. The defect clusters formed by co-doping of Bi 3+ and Nb 5+ ions confined the free electrons to a limited range of jumps, leading to a significant increase in the dielectric constant and a decrease in the dielectric loss of the NBTO- x ceramics. Defect clusters aggregated near grain boundaries accumulated free electrons and carriers, which formed an interfacial effect with insulating grain boundaries, further reducing the dielectric loss. Thus, a high dielectric constant of 10 5 and a low loss of 0.04 at 1 kHz with a temperature stability of Δ ε′ / ε′ 25 °C ≤ ±15% (-55 °C to 105 °C) was obtained in the NBTO-0.5% ceramic. This study offers a new approach to the design of high-performing giant dielectrics with excellent potential for application in microelectronic devices.

Innovative bi-functional cellulose acetate/BiOCl photocatalytic membrane with excellent antibiotics degradation and photoresponsive antimicrobial performance

Runlin Han,Faxiang Feng,Zanming Zhu,Shi Su,Jingjing Wang,Chuxuan Shi,Guilin Dong,Hongbo Gu

The development of photocatalytic membranes with high efficiency for the treatment of organic pollutants such as dyes and antibiotics is essential due to the complexity of the harmful components in the wastewater. In this work, the cellulose acetate/bismuth oxychloride (CA/BiOCl) nanocomposite membrane was in-situ generated by the immersion phase inversion method for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics and photoresponsive antibiosis. The results show that this CA/BiOCl nanocomposite membrane exhibits an excellent hydrophilicity with a water contact angle of 38.9° and a water flux of 2.66 × 10 4 L (m –2 h –1 bar –1 ). It depicts a high efficiency for the photocatalytic degradation of 97.6 % of tetracycline (TC) within 11 h. Effects of initial TC concentration and pH of solution on the performance of membrane are studied in detail. The membrane also demonstrates a superb cyclic stability, and the degradation efficiency remains 93.6 % after five cycles of recycling. It is found that the photocatalytic degradation of TC is mainly induced by superoxide radicals (·O 2 – ) and holes (h + ). Besides, the membrane also exhibits good photoresponsive antimicrobial properties under light irradiation. Our work provides novel insights on the multifunctional BiOCl-based materials for wastewater treatment.

Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid over a Bi-Promoted Pt/Al2O3 Catalyst

Juan Du,Wanting Qiu,Sunbal Ayaz,Jian Long,Wenze Guo,Ling Zhao,Zhenhao Xi

2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a high-value biomass-derived monomer, serves as a crucial building block for sustainable polymers including polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes. This study systematically investigated the catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA over Pt/Al2O3and Pt–Bi/Al2O3catalysts. The 5Pt/Al2O3catalyst yielded 60.6% FDCA after 12 h under optimized conditions (80 °C, 0.1 MPa O2, 1 equiv. Na2CO3). Remarkably, Bi-modified 5Pt–1Bi/Al2O3catalyst dramatically enhanced catalytic performance, achieving 94.1% FDCA yield within 6 h under optimized conditions (80 °C, 1.5 MPa O2, 2 equiv. Na2CO3). Comprehensive characterization revealed that the exceptional activity originates from Bi–O–Pt interactions that modulate the electronic structure and oxidation state of Pt active sites, which facilitates the oxidation of intermediate 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) to FDCA, the rate-limiting step of HMF oxidation. This work demonstrates an efficient Bi-promoted Pt catalytic system for FDCA production with significant potential for industrial application.

High areal capacity liquid bismuth-air batteries with Bi-Bi2O3 mixed conductor enhanced anode charge transfer

Chaojun Liu,Yidong Jiang,Xin Gu,Jiongyuan Huang,Wei Yan,Kongfa Chen,Yixiang Shi,Jiujun Zhang

Liquid metal electrodes are attractive in the field of energy storage due to their remarkable attributes such as high safety, cost effectiveness, extended lifespan, and high energy density. In this study, we develop a liquid bismuth–air battery owing to the advantageous oxygen ion conductivity offered by bismuth trioxide (Bi 2 O 3 ). Meanwhile, a Sb 2 O 3 –CuO–SnO 2 ceramic with corrosion resistance and stable conductivity in both reductive Bi and oxidizing Bi 2 O 3 are employed as the anode current collector. Impedance spectrum analysis and cross-sectional microscopic characterization are consistent with the formation of a heterogeneous Bi–Bi 2 O 3 architecture, which may provide mixed ionic–electronic conduction within the anode during discharge. This behavior, as inferred from morphological and electrochemical data, correlates with a volumetric specific capacity of 3580 mAh/cm 3 (94.6 % of the theoretical capacity) and an areal capacity of 2326 mAh/cm 2 under the tested conditions. The high areal and volumetric capacities, together with stable operation observed for >200 h in our tests, indicate the potential of liquid Bi–air batteries for high-density, high-temperature energy storage.

Extracting Optical Fiber Background from Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Spectra Based on Bi-Objective Optimization Modeling

Jie Huang,Tielin Shi,Zirong Tang,Wei Zhu,Guanglan Liao,Xiaoping Li,Bo Gong,Tengyuan Zhou

We propose a bi-objective optimization model for extracting optical fiber background from the measured surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) spectrum of the target sample in the application of fiber optic SERS. The model is built using curve fitting to resolve the SERS spectrum into several individual bands, and simultaneously matching some resolved bands with the measured background spectrum. The Pearson correlation coefficient is selected as the similarity index and its maximum value is pursued during the spectral matching process. An algorithm is proposed, programmed, and demonstrated successfully in extracting optical fiber background or fluorescence background from the measured SERS spectra of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and crystal violet (CV). The proposed model not only can be applied to remove optical fiber background or fluorescence background for SERS spectra, but also can be transferred to conventional Raman spectra recorded using fiber optic instrumentation.

Reinforcing vascular normalization therapy with a bi-directional nano-system to achieve therapeutic-friendly tumor microenvironment

Yudi Deng,Zhijie Jiang,Yincheng Jin,Jianan Qiao,Shan Yang,Hui Xiong,Jing Yao

Detrimental tumor microenvironment (TME) relies on distorted tumor vasculature for further tumor expansion. Vascular normalization therapy partly improves TME through vessel repairing, while these therapies enter an unbreakable Möbius ring due to each attempt hindered by pro-angiogenic factors from TME, leading to limited duration and extent of vascular normalization. Here, we developed a nanosystem including FLG and MAR/MPA nanodrugs to regulate both tumor vasculature and TME. FLG nanodrugs were constructed by connecting VEGF/VEGFR2 inhibitory low molecular weight heparin and gambogic acid with F3 peptide decoration for directly regulating on vascular endothelial cells and inducing vascular normalization. Meanwhile, MAR/MPA nanodrugs encapsulating CCL5/CCR5 blocker maraviroc were designed to restrict cytokine functions of angiogenesis and TME deterioration, contributing to vasculature repairing and TME reconstruction. Our results demonstrated this combined nanosystem synergistically induced vascular normalization window lasting 9 days and restored vascular permeability and oxygen supply in Panc-1 tumor. Furthermore, in melanoma, our nanosystem achieved immune improvements with increased infiltration of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells in a remodeled TME. The two nanodrugs assisting each other in terms of both vascular repairing and TME improvements successfully reversed the vicious crosstalk to a positive one, achieving overall TME remodeling and promoting therapeutic efficiency.

Alkaline Methanol Electrooxidation on Bi-Modified Pt3M Intermetallics: Kinetic Origins and an OH Binding Energy Descriptor

Lecheng Liang,Shao Ye,Hengyu Li,Peng Li,Kaiyang Xu,Jinhui Liang,Binwen Zeng,Bo Shen,Taisuke Ozaki,Zhiming Cui

The exploration of advanced CO-free catalysts and clarifying the ambiguous kinetic origins and governing factors would undoubtedly open up opportunities to overcome the sluggish kinetics of methanol electro-oxidation and promote the development of direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, we constructed a family of Bi-modified Pt3M intermetallic catalysts (Bi–Pt3M/C) that follow a CO-free dominated pathway. More significantly, we have identified the pivotal factor governing the reaction kinetics in the CO-free pathway, namely, OH binding energy (OHBE). This is because the rate-determining step (RDS) involves both C–H bond activation and water dissociation, and the energy barriers of these processes are effectively captured by OHBE. Accordingly, OHBE can act as an activity descriptor. Specifically, Bi–Pt3In/C stands out from other Bi–Pt3M/C and delivers the mass activity of 36.7 A mgPt–1 at peak potential, far exceeding state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts reported to date. Taking Bi–Pt3In/C as a proof of concept, we elucidate the origin of enhanced MOR activity by combining theoretical calculations, kinetic isotope effects, and formaldehyde electrooxidation. Moreover, there exhibits a volcano-type trend between OHBE and the activity of Bi–Pt3M/C. Beyond the discovery of ultrahigh-performance catalysts, these findings provide a detailed mechanistic picture of RDS and offer an innovative design principle for advanced catalysts.

Constructing heterointerface of Bi/Bi2S3 with built-in electric field realizes superior sodium-ion storage capability

Rong Liu,Lai Yu,Xiaoyue He,Huanhuan Liu,Xinyi Ma,Zongzhi Tao,Guanglin Wan,Nazir Ahmad,Bo Peng,Liang Shi,Genqiang Zhang

Bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) is a dominant anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, extreme volume fluctuations as well as low electrical conductivity and reaction kinetics still limit its practical applications. Herein, we construct an abundant heterointerface of Bi/Bi 2 S 3 by engineering the structure of Bi nanoparticles embedded on Bi 2 S 3 nanorods (denoted as Bi–Bi 2 S 3 NRs) to effectively solve the abovementioned obstacles. Theoretical and systematic characterization results reveal that the constructed heterointerface of Bi/Bi 2 S 3 has a built-in electric field, significantly boosts the electrical conductivity, enhances the Na + diffusion kinetics, and buffers the volume variation. With this modification, it can deliver long cycling life, with an ultra-high capacity of 500 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 , and outstanding rate capability, with a capacity of 456 mAh g −1 even at 15 A g −1 . Moreover, a full cell can achieve a high energy density of 180 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 40 W kg −1 . Our research opens up a fresh path for improving the dynamics and structural stability of metal sulfide-based electrode materials for SIBs.
