In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

In order to accelerate the photo-Fenton reaction process of Fe(III) under visible light irradiation, BiOI was introduced into the Fe(III)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The catalytic oxidation performance of vis-light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was evaluated using bisphenol AF (BPAF) as a representative organic contaminant . Within 30 min, nearly 100% of BPAF was degraded, proving that the system had an excellent ability to degrade organic pollutants in water. Free radical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), and molecular probing experiments determined that the main reactive species in the system were hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ). The comparative experiments showed that the degradation rates were closely related to the PDS consumption, while the Fe(II) absorbed on the surface of BiOI was responsible for the PDS consumption. The production pathway of Fe(II) was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and XPS characterization, the Fe(III) on the surface of BiOI was reduced by photogenerated electrons to generate Fe(II). The result confirmed that the reduction of Fe(III) by photogenerated electrons could effectively inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs, and accelerate the reduction progress of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle that was the rate-limiting step in PDS activation. Afterwards, a reliable mechanism for degradation of BPAF in visible light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was proposed. Finally, the influence of reactant dosages, visible light intensity , initial pH, humic acid (HA) and anions in the solution on the degradation of BPAF were discussed.

High porosity Co-Al-Fe intermetallic with 3D-microstructures were one-step synthesized via a novel thermal explosion reaction. A link between pore structure and permeability was established using 3D-XRM technology. The corrosion resistance of the samples with different Fe contents was investigated at 900 °C under an oxygen/sulphur atmosphere for up to 120 h. The results showed that the pore structure of the samples remains stable, and the internal matrices are intact due to the formation of a thin protective layer of Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 on the surface of the product skeleton. In addition, inward diffusion of S leads to the formation of FeS nodules.

Traditional Fenton and Fenton-like processes are affected by the sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) regeneration and Fe(III) accumulation. This research revealed that the degradation efficiency of pollutants was significantly increased by adding Fe(III) to the Vis/PS system. A mechanism is proposed in which photosensitivity pollutants can boost Fe(III) to produce Fe(II) under visible light irradiation. Intriguingly, Fe(III) rapidly combines with LVF in aqueous environments to form Fe(III)-LVF complexes. This research confirms that Fe(III)-pollutant complexes are generated. The proportion of complexes are calculated using mathematical models. Furthermore, the production of Fe(IV) is verified in the Vis/PS/Fe(III) system, which also plays a vital role in boosting LVF degradation. Overall, this study provides comprehensive insights into the degradation mechanism of micropollutants, involving hydroxyl radical ( OH ∙ ), Fe(IV), and Fe(III)-LVF complexes, providing an efficient and green strategy for contaminant removal during wastewater treatment .

Heterogeneous catalysts with ultra-small clusters and atomically dispersed (USCAD) active sites have gained increasing attention in recent years. However, developing USCAD catalysts with high-density metal sites anchored in porous nanomaterials is still challenging. Here, through the template-free S-assisted pyrolysis of low-cost Fe-salts with melamine (MA), porous alveolate Fe/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts with high-density (Fe loading up to 17.7 wt%) and increased USCAD Fe sites were synthesized. The presence of a certain amount of S species in the Fe-salts/MA system plays an important role in the formation of USCAD S-Fe-salt/CN catalysts; the S species act as a “sacrificial carrier” to increase the dispersion of Fe species through Fe-S coordination and generate porous alveolate structure by escaping in the form of SO 2 during pyrolysis . The S-Fe-salt/CN catalysts exhibit greatly promoted activity and reusability for degrading various organic pollutants in advanced oxidation processes compared to the corresponding Fe-salt/CN catalysts, due to the promoted accessibility of USCAD Fe sites by the porous alveolate structure. This S-assisted method exhibits good feasibility in a large variety of S species (thiourea, S powder, and NH 4 SCN) and Fe salts, providing a new avenue for the low-cost and large-scale synthesis of high-density USCAD metal/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts.

Methods to remove dye pollutants with natural enzyme, like horseradish peroxidase (HRP), are still limited due to high costs and low stability levels. The development of such a method with similar enzymatic activity is important and could be helpful in wastewater disposal. A metal organic framework material, Fe-loaded MOF-545 (Fe), was synthesized in our study as a new way to remove dyes due to its peroxidase-like activity. The structural characterizations of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis absorption spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) was investigated under different pH and temperature conditions. Because of the Fe added into the MOF-545 structure, the absorption of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) for acid (anionic) dyes (methyl orange (MO)) was better than for basic (cationic) dyes (methylene blue (MB)). The Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) could give a significant color fading for MO and MB over a short time (about two hours) with peroxidase-like activity. The remarkable capacity of Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) to remove the MO or MB is due to not only physical adsorption, but also degradation of the MO and MB with POD-like activity. Therefore, Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe) has significant potential regarding dye removal from wastewater.Keywords:Fe-loaded MOF-545(Fe);peroxidase-like activity;dye absorption;dye degradation;wastewater

The incorporation of nanomaterials generated from Prussian blue (PB) derivatives has emerged as a promising strategy to significantly improve the properties of energetic materials. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the influence of nanomaterials derived from PB on the thermal decomposition characteristics of energetic materials. To achieve this goal, we prepared nanomaterials using coprecipitation and heat treatment methods with PB derivatives as catalysts. Advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis for specific surface area and pore size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to thoroughly characterize these nanomaterials. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to assess the thermal behavior of nitrocellulose (NC), and the relevant kinetic parameters were determined through thermal decomposition kinetics calculations and analysis. This work revealed the influence of catalysts on the NC decomposition process and provided comprehensive insights into the effect of integrating nanomaterials derived from PB derivatives on the thermal decomposition performance of NC. The results of this work demonstrated the possibility of using nanomaterials generated from PB derivatives as effective catalysts to enhance the thermal decomposition characteristics of NC, offering interesting opportunities for their application in the field of high-energy materials.

Although zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have made great progress in recent years, there still a great challenge to develop low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability. Herein, we report a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst consisting of ZIF-derived carbon-anchored Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles and Fe single atoms, which are crosslinked by carbon nanotubes (denoted as CNT@Fe/Fe 3 C||FeNC). Benefiting from the synergetic effect of Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles, Fe-N 4 active sites, and the 3D interpenetrating network structure, CNT@Fe/Fe 3 C||FeNC shows excellent bifunctional catalytic activities with a low ΔE of 0.671 V. Furthermore, the assembled rechargeable ZAB demonstrates a high peak power density of 187 mW cm –2 and shows excellent cycling stability up to 600 h This work provides new ideas for constructing non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts for practical applications in ZABs.

Chemical looping H 2 O splitting is considered as a promising approach to produce hydrogen thanks to its lower energy consumption and carbon footprint compared with traditional steam reforming. Fe-based oxides have been paid much attention but suffer from inferior H 2 production rate and stability due to insufficient activation for H 2 O. Herein, it was found that the introduction of Cr into MgFe spinel oxides (MgFe x Cr 2-x O 4 , MFCO) could greatly increase the performance of H 2 O splitting driven by CH 4 reduction with the highest peak H 2 production rate of about 4.65 mmol min −1 g −1 , H 2 productivity of about 2.88 mmol g −1 and good stability during multiple redox cycles for MFCO-46 (the atomic ratio of Fe and Cr of 2:3), which exceeded most of the state-of-the-art Fe-based oxides. This originated from the Cr doping promoting Fe 0 nanoparticles exsolution by activating CH 4 and Fe-O v -Cr species formation which relay catalyzed H 2 O splitting and was favorable for the fast recovery of lattice oxygen converted.

Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant attention as catalysts for heterogeneous Fenton reactions, while the limited efficiency of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle hinders their widespread use in wastewater treatment. Herein, we successfully incorporated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into MIL-101(Fe) to modulate the coordination environment of Fe for achieving better catalytic activity. The MIL-101(Fe)/CNTs/H 2 O 2 system shows outstanding performance in degrading various pollutants, with the catalytic activity of the MIL-101(Fe)/CNTs composites (98.8%) significantly surpassing that of MIL-101(Fe) alone (26.4%) or CNTs alone (3.5%). Multiple experimental findings suggest that this synergistic effect is primarily attributed to the C-O-Fe bridge bonds resulting from the interaction of surface carboxyl groups on CNTs with Fe in MIL-101(Fe). This unique coordination structure accelerates the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II), thereby promoting the generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO • ). Furthermore, the MIL-101(Fe)/CNTs composites demonstrate excellent reusability and stability, maintaining effectiveness over a wide pH range from 3.0 to 6.5. This study provides new insights into regulating the microstructure of Fe-based MOFs to enhance their Fenton catalytic activity.

A series of Fe/β zeolite catalysts with various Fe/Al ratios were prepared by liquid ion-exchanged method and were characterized by N 2 adsorption, XRD , UV–Vis DRS, EPR , NH 3 -TPD, and FTIR of pyridine adsorption techniques. The catalysts were used to catalyze the transformation of glucose into 5-hydorxymethyfural (HMF) in a biphasic reaction system under mild reaction conditions. The Fe/β catalysts with Lewis acidic Fe sites is able to effectively improve the HMF yield compared to H-β zeolite under identical reaction conditions, which is ascribed to the enhanced isomerization activity of glucose-to-fructose by Lewis acidic Fe species. Moreover, the Fe/Al ratio had a remarkable impact on the conversion of glucose and the yield of HMF, indicating that the synergetic effect of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites is critical to achieving high HMF yield. Under optimal reaction conditions, Fe/β-0.06 catalyst afforded 61% HMF yield at glucose conversion of 95% after the reaction of 90 min at 120 °C, which is one of the most effective catalysts for the conversion of glucose into HMF in a biphasic medium up to now. Furthermore, extra-framework isolated Fe species bound to the framework Al sites, are most likely the active sites for the isomerization of glucose-to-fructose in the conversion of glucose. The catalysts were very stable and could be reused at least five runs without significant loss in the catalytic activity .

Microbial Fe(II) oxidation is mainly mediated by the outer-membrane proteins that contain c -type cytochromes ( c- Cyts), and the widespread Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria are usually subjected to fluctuations between oxic and anoxic conditions. However, it remains unclear how oxygen affects the redox dynamics of c- Cyts by Fe(II), particularly in the presence of organic ligands that are widely distributed in the environment. Here, the reduction of a model heme-containing c- Cyts by Fe(II) was investigated in the absence and presence of organic ligands (i.e., citrate and acetate) at pH 5.5 under anoxic and oxic conditions . The kinetic results showed that c- Cyts reduction was enhanced by citrate and acetate under anoxic conditions, and the enhancement by citrate was more pronounced than that by acetate. The speciation calculation and cyclic voltammetry results suggested that the proportions of Fe(II)-Citrate complexes were much higher than those of Fe(II)-Acetate complex, but the addition of acetate and citrate caused minor changes in redox potential of Fe(II)/Fe(III) species. Further analysis using quantum chemical computation demonstrated that the formation of Fe(II)-Heme complexes via lateral binding to the carboxyl group of c- Cyts was more stable than those via replacing the S-linked axial ligand of heme, with the recombination energy with Heme ranking as Fe(II)-Citrate < Fe(II)-Acetate < Fe(II). Therefore, the stronger complexation of Fe(II)-Citrate and its lower recombination energy with c- Cyts drive the enhanced c- Cyts reduction under anoxic conditions. By contrast, the c- Cyts reduction by Fe(II) and Fe(II)-ligand was inhibited under oxic conditions. The electron spin resonance characterization indicated that both O 2 − • and OH• radicals were produced in the system of c- Cyts with Fe(II) or Fe(II)-ligand under oxic conditions and the signals were higher with Fe(II)-ligand than those with Fe(II). These reactive oxygen species were proposed to enable a re-oxidation of the c- Cyts that was reduced by Fe(II) or Fe(II)-ligand, causing an inhibitory effect on the observed c- Cyts reduction and forming more reactive oxygen species . Our findings shed light on the important roles of Fe(II)-ligand-heme complexation and reactive oxygen species in the interaction between Fe(II) and c- Cyts, which deepen the understanding of microbial/enzymatic Fe(II) oxidation under oxic conditions at the molecular level.
