Ti-based Li-ion sieve (H 2 TiO 3 , HTO), is attractive for adsorbing lithium from salt lakes. Nevertheless, the titanium dissolution and limited adsorption capacity affect the cycling stability and adsorption performance. In this work, an atom engineering technique was employed by doping tungsten (W) into layered HTO via a hydrothermal method. Through experiments and theoretical simulation, it was demonstrated that the doped W in HTO results in expanded interplanar spacing, increased surface adsorption energy, and excellent adsorption performance. The optimized HTO-W exhibits an Ti dissolution rate of 0.73 % (in 2 mol L −1 HCl for 12 h, 5.6 % that of pristine HTO) and adsorption capacity of 43.01 mg g −1 (in 425 mg L −1 LiCl solution at 30 °C, 1.4 times that of undoped HTO). Furthermore, the HTO-W reaches adsorption equilibrium in about 3 h with exceptional selectivity and stability. This work demonstrates an effective enhancement of lithium adsorption by W doping, providing new avenues for developing lithium adsorbents with high performance.

Low-loss (high- Q × f , where Q = 1/tan δ ) dielectric ceramics can help achieve efficient microwave signal transmission and reduce heat generation. In the traditional Ca-Ln-Ti-O perovskite system (where Ln = rare earth) with the general formula of Ca 1– x Ln 2 x /3 TiO 3 (CST x ), the sharp decline in the Q × f value when x > 0.5 remains unexplained, posing a challenge for designing low-loss ceramics. In this study, CST x ceramics ( x ≤ 0.7) are synthesized via the solid-state reaction method, with a focus on their structure, defects, and broadband dielectric properties. A significant discrepancy between the Q × f values in the microwave and terahertz bands is found when x ≥ 0.6, suggesting the presence of additional loss mechanisms in the microwave band beyond ion displacement depolarization. Meanwhile, the low-frequency dielectric spectra show a weak dielectric relaxation in the low-temperature region, attributed to the partially ordered A -site vacancies. Therefore, this relaxation can act on the microwave frequency band at room temperature, resulting in a sharp decline in Q × f values. Such low-frequency and low-temperature dielectric relaxation should not be ignored in the research of microwave dielectric ceramics. These findings provide a crucial theoretical reference for developing low-loss microwave dielectric ceramics.

This study proposes a hybrid electrochemical oxidation-coagulation (EOC) system that integrates a Ti₄O₇ anode with a cathode fabricated from waste aluminum cans, enabling the simultaneous degradation of phosphonates and removal of hardness ions from cooling water. Compared to standalone electrooxidation (EO) and conventional chemical coagulation (CC), the EOC system achieved 41.9% Ca²⁺ removal, 91% total soluble phosphorus (TSP) elimination, and 67.2% conversion of phosphonate to phosphate within 2 hours. Mechanistic studies revealed that the hybrid EOC system performs a synergistic effect, including anodic oxidation of antiscalant (nitrilotris methylene phosphonic acid, NTMP), and the cathodic dissolution of aluminum, generating coagulants that facilitate the concurrent removal of hardness ions and residual phosphorus. The presence of chloride ions enhanced NTMP degradation via the generation of reactive chlorine species (RCS) without impacting Ca²⁺ removal efficiency, whereas the presence of magnesium ions promoted Ca²⁺ removal via Mg(OH)₂ formation, which provides nucleation sites for co-precipitation. On top of mechanical insights, practical validation with real cooling water confirmed the practical effectiveness and robustness of the EOC system. Moreover, energy consumption analysis revealed that the EOC system significantly reduced energy demand for calcium and TSP removal by 91% and 76%, respectively, compared to the EO system. Overall, this work underscores an efficient and cost-effective electrochemical approach for industrial cooling water treatment, establishing foundational insights for scalable implementation.

Optimizing energy storage performance often involves increasing the discrepancy between maximum polarization and remanent polarization ( P max - P r ) and breakdown strength ( E b ). Here, aging treatment in acceptor doped NBT-based film is taken for increasing both E b and P max - P r by constructing ordered defect dipoles. Enhanced P max - P r value of 80.6 μC/cm 2 and high E b of 2630 kV/cm are obtained in the aged (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.55 Sr 0.45 Ti 0.99 Mn 0.01 O 3 thin film, which can be attributed to the reversible domain switching caused by ordered defect dipoles and low oxygen vacancies concentration. Accordingly, an energy density of 72.4 J/cm 3 with an efficiency of 76.8 % was achieved simultaneously in the aged film, which are approximately raised by 80.6 % and 45.2 %, respectively, compared with the unaged state. The stable energy storage performances are achieved within the scope of operating temperatures (20–200 ◦ C) and frequencies (0.2–10 kHz). These results provide a new route to take usages of aging process for optimizing the energy performance of NBT-based thin films.

Thermal and mechanical properties of yttrium tantalate (YTaO 4 ), a top coat ceramic of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aeroengines, are enhanced by synthesizing Y 1− x Ta 1− x M 2 x O 4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; x = 0.06, 0.12, 0.18, 0.24) medium-entropy ceramics (MECs) using a two-step sintering method. In addition, the thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficients (TECs), and fracture toughness of MECs were investigated. An X-ray diffraction study revealed that the Y 1− x Ta 1− x M 2 x O 4 MECs were monoclinic, and the Ti, Zr, and Hf doping elements replaced Y and Ta. The variations in atomic weights and ionic radii led to disturbed atomic arrangements and severe lattice distortions, resulting in improving the phonon scattering and reduced thermal conductivity, with Y 1− x Ta 1− x M 2 x O 4 MECs ( x = 0.24) exhibiting the lowest thermal conductivity of 1.23 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 900°C. The introduction of MO 2 increased the configurational entropy and weakened the ionic bonding energy, obtaining high TECs (10.4 × 10 −6 K −1 at 1400°C). The reduction in the monoclinic angle β lowered the ferroelastic domain inversion energy barrier. Moreover, microcracks and crack extension toughening endowed Y 1− x Ta 1− x M 2 x O 4 MECs ( x = 0.24) with the highest fracture toughness of (4.1 ± 0.5) MPa·m 1/2 . The simultaneous improvement of the thermal and mechanical properties of the MO 2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) co-doped YTaO 4 MECs can be extended to other materials.

Metal-phenolic networks, despite their good ammonia nitrogen adsorption properties, have suffered from poor acid resistance and high oxidability in the past thus leading to ineffective treatment and the possible conversion of ammonia nitrogen into nitrate nitrogen. Research on the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen by titanium tannate (Ti-TA), which exhibits good resistance to ammonia nitrogen oxidation, is still unclear. A batch experiment was conducted to investigate the structural characteristics of Ti-TA, as well as its adsorption behaviors. Among them, advanced technologies such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, were used for this investigation. The results showed that Ti-TA, prepared with a molar ratio of tannic acid to tetrabutyl titanate of 1:5 at a solution pH of 7, was able to form a rough surface and a microporous structure with a specific surface area up to 356.9 m 2 /g. The parameters, affecting the adsorption results, included pH and adsorbent dose, where lower adsorbent doses resulted in higher adsorption capacities, reaching up to 4.175 mg/g, and neutral to weakly acidic conditions were conducive to the adsorption process. For example, when the initial NH 4 + -N concentration was 28.45 mg/L, and the ratio of tannic acid to Ti was 1.5, the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen can exceed 95.78 % within a pH range of 6–7. The primary mechanisms underlying physicochemical adsorption involve electrostatic interaction between oxygen ions and NH 4 + -N, as well as hydrogen bonding. The adsorption process occurred spontaneously, following Pseudo-second-order kinetics and adhering to the Freundlich isotherm model, with a relatively low adsorption index (1/ n < 0.5). For the first time, the findings of this study reveal the adsorption behaviors of Ti-TA and propose optimal preparation conditions, underscoring its significant potential for applications in nitrogen pollution treatment.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit distinctive core effects and excellent properties, presenting promising prospects for various applications, particularly as potential cermet adhesives. (Ti,W)C-HEA cermets were synthesized using vacuum sintering, employing mechanically alloyed CoCrFeNiTi HEA powder as a binder. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the produced cermets were systematically analyzed, with a particular focus on the effect of the HEA binder on the mechanical properties of the cermets. The findings indicated a decreasing trend in relative density, Rockwell hardness, and transverse rupture strength (TRS) of the cermets. Notably, the CM1 group ((Ti,W)C-30 wt% Co 20 Cr 20 Fe 20 Ni 35 Ti 5 ) demonstrated the most favorable overall properties, with values of 97.0 % for relative density, 83.2 HRA for Rockwell hardness, and 776.6 MPa for TRS. The phase transformation of HEAs at elevated temperatures was meticulously investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and heat treatment. Combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), the phase transformation of Co 20 Cr 20 Fe 20 Ni 25 Ti 15 and Co 20 Cr 20 Fe 20 Ni 15 Ti 25 , heat treated at increasing temperatures, is as follows: FCC + BCC (milled) → FCC + σ (700°C–1100 °C) → FCC (bulk).

Crystal structure refinement and Raman spectroscopy were performed on Ca 3 M 2 Ga 2 GeO 12 (M = Ti, Sn, Zr) garnet-structured ceramics to explore the relationships between crystal structure, phonon modes, and microwave dielectric properties . The Ca 3 Ti 2 Ga 2 GeO 12 , Ca 3 Sn 2 Ga 2 GeO 12 , and Ca 3 Zr 2 Ga 2 GeO 12 ceramics were obtained by sintering at 1325–1475 °C for 6 h, and good microwave dielectric properties were achieved: ε r = 15.04, 9.53, and 11.89; Q × f = 59,515 GHz, 49,355 GHz, and 45,587 GHz; and τ f = −47.3 ppm/°C, −52.3 ppm/°C, and −43.0 ppm/°C, respectively. M 4+ (M = Ti, Sn, Zr) cations entirely occupied the octahedral site, leading to an average underbonding between cations and anions, a weak rattling effect, and measured ε r values deviating from theoretical values. The packing fraction and Raman FWHM (A 1g mode) correlated highly with the Q × f values. The negative τ f values were derived from the large positive temperature coefficient of permittivity ( τ ε ) and the temperature coefficient of ionic polarizability ( τ αm ).

The potential of capacitive deionization (CDI) for sustainable desalination depends critically on breakthroughs in electrode materials. Defect-rich titanium (sub) oxides (anatase TiO₂(A), Ti₂O₃, Ti₃O₅, Ti₄O₇) offer compelling advantages, including tunable capacity, low environmental impact, and robustness. This study provides a systematic comparison of their structural features, electrochemical responses, and desalination efficacy. Electrochemical characterization results show anatase TiO₂(A) leads in specific capacitance (252.5 F g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 ), while Ti₃O₅’s highest oxygen vacancy minimizes charge transfer resistance and maximizes ion migration rates. In desalination trials, TiO₂ delivers a maximum salt adsorption capacity of 37.1 mg g −1 (500 mg L −1 NaCl, 1.2 V). All electrodes exhibit outstanding cycling stability (capacity retentions >83.5 %), affirming their practical potential. Correlation analysis discloses the oxygen vacancy-driven charge transfer mechanism inside these electrodes and establishes a structure-performance relationship. Overall, this work establishes fundamental structure-property relationships that underpin future electrode innovation via the oxygen vacancy-engineering strategy, which represents a promising pathway for advancing CDI performance boundaries.

The discovery of out-of-plane ordered (o-MAX) phases has been largely confined to Al-containing systems, leaving a critical gap in understanding chemical ordering mechanisms across other A-element families. Meanwhile, the 413-type Ge-based MAX phases in bulk form are still lacking. Here, we report the first synthesis of bulk Ge-based 413-type MAX phases: Cr 2 Ti 2 GeC 3 , (Cr 1/3 Ti 1/3 Mo 1/3 ) 4 GeC 3 , and (CrTiVMo)GeC 3 , thereby expanding both structural complexity and chemical ordering paradigms in nanolaminate ceramics, and introducing the second series of o-MAX phases. Through combined Rietveld refinement and atomic-resolution elemental mapping, we demonstrate robust Ti-Cr out-of-plane chemical ordering in these phases, with Ti preferentially occupying the inner metal layers adjacent to Ge atoms and Cr populating the outer layers. This chemical ordering pattern is preserved even in quaternary metal compositions. In contrast, the introduced Mo and V are distributed almost randomly at both sites. First-principles calculations demonstrated the thermodynamic stability and electronic structure, and quantified the mechanical properties of Ge-based 413 phases, revealing enhanced mechanical moduli and tunable ductility through V/Mo incorporation. This work expands the o-MAX family beyond Al-based systems, establishing Ge-containing high- n phases as a platform for designing chemically ordered nanolaminates with tailored stiffness-ductility balance.

Ti 1.4 V 0.6 Ni + x LiAlH 4 ( x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, wt.%) composites were prepared by ball-milling, and the effects of LiAlH 4 content on structure and electrochemical properties of the composites were investigated systematically. The addition of LiAlH 4 to the Ti 1.4 V 0.6 Ni alloy significantly affected the morphology and size of the composite particles . The electrochemical cycling stability and rate dischargeability of the composite electrodes benefitted from adding some LiAlH 4 ( x = 1), which however deteriorated when the LiAlH 4 content increased further. The positive effect of LiAlH 4 on the electrochemical performance of the studied alloy was caused by suppression of the dissolution of active components of the Ti 1.4 V 0.6 Ni hydrogen storage alloy.

Ti-supported IrO2 or RuO2 oxide coated electrodes are widely used for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media. Electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability need to be further improved for these types of electrodes. A highly porous and well-adhered electrodeposited SiO2 (e-SiO2) film is proposed as the interlayer in this work to meet the above-mentioned requirements. The results show that the active oxide fully fills in the porous network throughout the whole thickness of the e-SiO2 film, to form “total-depth” highly porous oxide electrocatalytic coatings. For this reason, more than 1 order of magnitude higher apparent activity towards the OER at the Ti/e-SiO2/IrO2 (or RuO2) electrode is achieved compared to that of the conventional Ti/IrO2 or Ti/RuO2 electrode. Literature survey indicates that these novel electrodes are one of the most active Ti electrodes ever reported. The service life of this type of electrode is also obviously enhanced due to the “inter-locking” structure formed between the active oxide layer and e-SiO2 film.
