Chiral ligands are considered a required ingredient during the synthesis of dissymmetric plasmonic metal nanocrystals. The mechanism behind the generation of chiral structures involves the formation of high Miller index chiral facets, induced by the adsorption of such chiral ligands. We found, however, that chirality can also evolve spontaneously, without the involvement of any chiral ligands, during the co-deposition of Au and Ag on Au nanorods. When using a specific Au/Ag ratio, phase segregation of the two metals leads to an interface within the obtained AuAg shell, which can be exposed by removing the Ag component via oxidative etching. Although a close-to-racemic mixture of chiral Au nanorods with right- and left-handedness is found in solution, electron tomography analysis evidences left- and right-handed helicities, both at the Au–Ag interface and at the exposed surface of Au NRs after Ag etching. The helicity profile of the NRs indicates dominating inclination angles in the range from 30° to 60°. Single-particle optical characterization also reveals random handedness in the plasmonic response of individual nanorods. We hypothesize that the origin of chirality is related to symmetry breaking during the co-deposition of Au and Ag, through an initial perturbation at a small region on the Au–Ag interface, which eventually leads to chiral segregation throughout the nanocrystal.

Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful and sensitive technique for the detection of various molecules, including gaseous analytes. However, the development of efficient, stable, and reusable SERS substrates for gaseous molecule remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule, which consists of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) core and ZIF-8 porous shell on Cu foils. With strong enhancement of electromagnetic field by AgNPs core and effective caption of gaseous molecule by ZIF-8 porous shell, this substrate exhibits good SERS performance of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptophenol (DP) gaseous molecules, whose limit of detection (LOD) could reach 9.12 × 10 −10 M and 9.91 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Furthermore, the detection of gaseous benzaldehyde diffused by oil paint is explored by this developed SERS substrate for application. To achieve accurate identification of harmful gaseous molecule in complex volatile organic compounds (VOC), the deep learning (DL) approach is performed based on SERS spectra obtained from this Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film. Our results demonstrate that the identification of gaseous benzaldehyde in VOC diffused from commercial oil paint has a high accuracy at 97.7% with the help of ANN algorithms, which points out the Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film has good performance and huge potential for SERS detection of gaseous molecule.

As the most well-known analytical tool, the thermometer has been extended to the field of biological analysis based on the photothermal effect. Herein, isoniazide modified Ag nanoparticles were prepared as nanolabels to build an immunoassay . The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic laser scattering (DLS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). When the target protein was present, the sandwich immunoassay was developed and the photothermal reaction was triggered by isoniazide modified Ag nanoparticles. As a reducing agent, isoniazide is used to transform phosphomolybdic acid hydrate into molybdenum blue solution. And molybdenum blue had good photothermal stability and high photothermal conversion efficiency. The temperature variation of molybdenum blue solution showed a positive correlation with the concentration of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Thus, the target protein of CEA was quantitative detection by thermometer. The linear response range is 0.1 ng mL −1 to 40 ng mL −1 , and the detection limit is 0.08 ng mL −1 . Moreover, the proposed protocol had satisfactory selectivity, accuracy, and reproducibility.

Azobenzenes play an important role in dyes and pigments, food additives and pharmaceuticals. However, selective oxidation of aniline to valuable azobenzene under mild conditions is considerably challenging. Herein, through the reduction of boron clusters loaded with layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a nanometallic photocatalyst ZnTi LDH@ [ closo -B 12 H 12 ]@ 1.17%Ag(ZnTi LDH@B 12 H 12 @Ag) was synthesized. The catalyst catalyzed the synthesis of azobenzene from aniline. The catalyst achieved a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 54.9 h −1 and turnover number (TON) of 439.3. Under the reaction conditions of Na 2 CO 3 , at 40 °C and irradiation at 365 nm with an ultraviolet light source at atmospheric pressure, the yield of azobenzene reached 95.3% after 8 h of reaction and the catalytic activity remained above 80% after six recycles. This study reports a new synthetic catalyst for the selective oxidation of aniline compounds to azobenzene.

To further improve the performance of all-inkjet-printing ZnO UV photodetector and maintain the advantages of inkjet printing technology, the inkjet printing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on the inkjet printing ZnO UV photodetector for the first time. The inkjet printing Ag NPs can passivate the surface defects of ZnO and work as surface plasmons from the characterization of photoluminescence (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and finite difference time domain method (FDTD) simulation. The normalized detectivity ( D * ) of the Ag NP-modified detector reaches to 1.45 × 10 10 Jones at 0.715 mW incident light power, which is higher than that of 5.72 × 10 9 Jones of the bare ZnO photodetector. The power-law relationship between the photocurrent and the incident light power of the Ag NP-modified ZnO detector is I pc ∝ P 2.34 , which means the photocurrent is highly sensitive to the change of incident light power.

Herein, we fabricated an Ag/Ag2Se composite film on a flexible nylon membrane with a high power factor and excellent flexibility. First, Ag nanoparticles and multiscale Ag2Se nanostructure composite powders were prepared by wet chemical synthesis using Se nanowires, silver nitrate, and l-ascorbic acid as raw materials, followed by vacuum-assisted filtration of the composite powders on a porous nylon membrane and then hot pressing. The optimized composite film shows a very high power factor of 1860.6 μW m–1 K–2 (with a corresponding electrical conductivity of 3958 S cm–1) at room temperature. The composite film retains 93.3% of the original electrical conductivity after 1000 bending cycles around a rod with a diameter of 8 mm. At a temperature difference of 27 K, an 8-leg thermoelectric prototype device assembled with the optimized composite film generates a maximum power of 7.14 μW with a corresponding power density of 8.74 W m–2. This work provides a new strategy to synthesize flexible thermoelectric films with both a high power factor and high electrical conductivity.

Micromotors have hold great promise for environmental remediation. Herein, we reported a novel γ-Fe 2 O 3 @Ag-mSiO 2 NH 2 magnetic Janus micromotor for dynamic removal of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants from water. The as-prepared Janus micromotors displayed unique core-shell structure composed of amino-functionalized meso‑SiO 2 shell and γ-Fe 2 O 3 magnetic core, and could be propelled by O 2 bubbles generated by Ag-catalyzed decomposition of H 2 O 2 . This Janus micromotor could move with a high velocity of 203.06 ± 10.6 μm s −1 (about 253.8 body lengths s –1 ) in 10 wt.% H 2 O 2 solution. γ-Fe 2 O 3 @Ag-mSiO 2 NH 2 magnetic Janus micromotor showed much higher removal capacities for Cu 2+ (15.59 mg g −1 ) and doxycycline (31.45 mg g −1 ) than its static control samples due to the synergy of self-propulsive movement and amino-functionalized porous core-shell structure. Furthermore, the magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 cores enabled the remote magnetic control on the movement direction and magnetic recycling. This work provides a new strategy for environmental pollutants treatment.

In this study, we developed a microfluidic paper analysis device (μPAD) for distance-based detection of Ag + in water. The μPAD was manufactured by wax printing method on filter paper. Then, a layer of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was deposited and ascorbic acid was printed on the channel. In the detection, Ag + was reduced by ascorbic acid and coated on the surface of the AuNPs on the channel, forming Au@Ag core/shell nanoparticles. Based on the capillary flow principle, different concentrations of Ag + formed different distances of color ribbons. Thus, quantitative detection of Ag + can be achieved by measuring the distance of the color ribbon. The detection limit of this method was as low as 1 mg·L −1 within 15 min and the interference of common metal ions in water can be eliminated. In conclusion, this method had successfully realized the leap from colorimetry to direct reading, realizing fast read and easy manipulation with low-cost.

Metal alloy nanosheets play a very important role as catalysts, which also show obvious advantages in the field of biosensor. Compared with traditional methods, such as enzyme method, gas chromatography or optical absorbance, the detection of ascorbic acid is simpler and more stable
by spectroscopy. Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets with a thickness of about 1–3 nm and an average lateral size of 3–5 nm were synthesized in this study by the soft template method. These nanosheets were used to construct a sensor for measuring the concentration of ascorbic acid. The
initial UV-Vis absorption peaks for the Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets in aqueous solution were effectively quenched upon addition of ascorbic acid. As the ascorbic acid concentration was in the range of 5–250 mmol/L changes, the UV absorbance intensity for the sensor also changed. Because
of its wide detection range, high sensitivity, and excellent stability, the Ag–Cu alloy sensor method may be an excellent alternative to the traditional ascorbic acid measure method.

Transparent conductive films (TCFs) are highly desirable for making full use of solar energy. However, the production and application of TCFs are seriously restricted by two obvious weaknesses: complex processes and poor properties. In this research, simple and direct approaches including condensation reflux and hot-pressing are selected to gain a cheap TCF with good properties. The polyvinyl butyral enhanced by 6 spray layers of Ag nanowires (AgNWs/PVB) TCF is found to achieve an optical transmittance of 80.1% and a sheet resistance of 86.4 Ω/sq, and meanwhile, withstand bending cycles over 150 and an extensile rate of 15%. Additionally, the AgNWs/PVB TCF has a deep potential to be further improved by hot-pressing treatment and its sheet resistance can be reduced to 19.7 Ω/sq. Our findings may show a facile way to produce low-cost and high-performance TCFs.

Exploring Earth-abundant transition-metal-based electrocatalysts with high performance toward the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production. Ni3S2 has been recently identified as a promising HER catalyst, but it has unfavorable water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption characteristics. Here, we report Ag-decorated Ni3S2 nanosheet arrays grown on Ni Foam (NF) (Ag-Ni3S2/NF) as efficient heterostructure electrocatalysts for the HER in alkaline media. The catalyst only requires a low overpotential of 89 mV at 10 mA cm−2, as well as sustaining long-term durability for 15 h. The experimental analysis, in combination with density functional theory calculation, demonstrates that the electronic coupling at the interface between Ni3S2 and Ag results in enhanced electronic conductivity and optimized hydrogen adsorption and water adsorption/dissociation free energies. This work not only develops a highly efficient catalyst toward the HER, but also sheds light on the structure–activity relationship of the heterostructure catalyst on an atomic scale.
