Corncob-shaped Bi/V 2 O 3 @NC composite was designed and constructed. • Bi/V 2 O 3 @NC composite delivers 266.9 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and high rate performance. • Bi/V 2 O 3 heterostructure and carbon shell ease volume expansion for stable cycling. • Phase transition mechanism of Bi/V 2 O 3 @NC composite during cycling was investigated. Bismuth (Bi) is considered a promising anode candidate for alkali metal-ion batteries owing to its abundant natural reserves, outstanding theoretical capacity, intrinsic conductivity, and moderate charge/discharge potential. However, during cycling, it suffers from pulverization and agglomeration, leading to severe volume expansion, structural collapse, and rapid capacity decay. In addition, its sluggish alloying reaction kinetics limits the rate capability and practical applications. To address these challenges, a corncob-shaped Bi/V 2 O 3 @NC composite is designed, in which Bi and V 2 O 3 nanoparticles are uniformly encapsulated within a nitrogen-doped carbon nanoshell. This hierarchical architecture shortens ion/electron transport pathways and provides abundant electrochemically active sites. The Bi/V 2 O 3 heterointerface mitigates the volume expansion of Bi during cycling while enhancing reversible capacity, as evidenced by the stable cycling performance. The nitrogen-doped carbon coating suppresses volume deformation, enhances electrode conductivity, and facilitates ion diffusion, contributing to improved structural stability and electrochemical kinetics. Benefiting from these structural features, the Bi/V 2 O 3 @NC delivers a reversible capacity of 206.5 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 and retains 233.4 mAh g −1 after 3500 cycles at 5 A g −1 . Electrochemical analysis and ex situ characterization reveal that this performance originates from the synergistic effect of surface-capacitive and diffusion-controlled processes, with a high capacitive contribution (93.8% at 1.2 mV s −1 ) enabling fast kinetics. The sodium storage mechanism involves reversible alloying (Bi ↔ NaBi ↔ Na 3 Bi) and intercalation (V 2 O 3 ↔ Na x V 2 O 3 ) reactions, as confirmed by ex situ XRD. This work provides a design strategy for metal/metal oxide heterostructures and offers insights into the electrochemical mechanisms of alloy-based anodes for sodium-ion batteries. A RE-doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 perovskite-based luminescence material is developed. • Dual NIR-II emissions of Ho 3+ /Er 3+ are achieved under 980 nm excitation. • High performance (Sr=1.3% K-1) phonon-assisted ratiometric thermometer is constructed. High-performance optical thermometers operating in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window hold great promise for biomedical applications due to their tissue penetration depth and minimal autofluorescence. However, developing reliable NIR-II thermometers with high sensitivity and robust performance across a wide temperature range remains a challenge. Herein, the luminescence properties and NIR-II ratiometric thermometric performance of Er 3+ , Ho 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (BTO) perovskite oxide were investigated. Upon 980 nm excitation, NIR-II emission from Er 3+ at 1560 nm ( 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) and Ho 3+ at 1200 nm ( 5 I 6 → 5 I 8 ) was achieved. A ratiometric thermometer was constructed using the temperature-dependent intensity ratio, I Er /I Ho . Relying on the thermal dependence of this ratio, the BTO system exhibits a relative sensitivity (S r ) of 1.3% at 333 K. Furthermore, the results suggest that phonon characteristics of the BTO host influence energy-transfer processes and NIR-II thermometric performance, highlighting importance of host properties in designing rare-earth-doped NIR-II thermometric materials. Metal ions doping has attracted noteworthy attention for tuning the electronic structure of semiconductors. However, high doping content usually leads to the formation of heterophase or impurity. Herein, ultra-high Bi-doped CeO 2 nanorods (doping amount up to 20 mol%) without dopant segregation were fabricated by pyrolyzing Bi/Ce bimetallic-organic frameworks (Bi/Ce-BMOFs), and adaptive oxygen vacancies (OVs) were introduced. The Bi-doped CeO 2 not only retains the unique porous structure of Bi/Ce-BMOFs, thus possessing a large specific surface area, but also significantly enhances the visible-light response and promotes the redox cycling of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ion pairs, thereby accelerating the efficient activation of H 2 O 2 . Moreover, the adaptive OVs serve as electron-trapping sites, further facilitating the separation of charge carriers. Consequently, the Bi-doped CeO 2 exhibits an excellent photo-Fenton degradation efficiency of tetracycline (TC) over a broad pH range (pH = 2-9). Mechanistic studies revealed that ·O 2 – and ⋅OH are the dominant reactive species. Additionally, the possible degradation pathways of TC were explored using joint characterizations. The ecotoxicity of intermediate products formed during the degradation process was also assessed. This work demonstrates the great potential of the Bi-CeO 2 heterojunction in antibiotic degradation and risk control, providing a feasible strategy for designing efficient and stable catalyst with heteroatom doping derived from BMOFs.

Phase engineering for synchronously realizing the demand of electrochemical reactions and structural stability has attracted the great enthusiasm of researchers to obtain high capacity and tolerance for Na+ insertion, especially the construction of uniform heterostructures by regulating the crystal structure in the same phase. Herein, ultrathin GeS2 nanoflakes composed of a mixture of orthorhombic and monoclinic crystal structures have been constructed by employing an in situ Ge-MOF sulfidation method. Benefiting from the combined effect of the accelerated reaction kinetics derived from the self-assembly of heterostructures, and the enhanced reaction reversibility originating from the excellent homogeneity of heterointerfaces and a stable intermediate phase interface, the GS-OM electrode materials show outstanding rate properties (371.9 mA h g–1 at 30 A g–1) and Na+ uptake/removal durability (603.9 mA h g–1 at 10 A g–1 over 1000 cycles) and even deliver an excellent practicability (104.01 mA h g–1 at 1 A g–1 over 300 cycles for full cells). Of note, this constructed phase engineering is expected to provide powerful guidance and effective insight for designing better sodium ion battery anodes with not only superior electrochemical reaction reversibility but also improved structure perdurability.

Mg 3 (Sb,Bi) 2 has emerged as one of the most promising thermoelectric materials with the potential to complement commercial bismuth telluride. However, its performance is still hindered by pronounced carrier grain-boundary scattering, relatively high lattice thermal conductivity, and poor chemical stability. In this work, we reveal the multifaceted role of Ta in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of Mg 3 (Sb,Bi) 2 -based materials. The incorporation of Ta not only increases carrier concentration through the donor effect, but also boosts carrier mobility by promoting grain growth and reducing the potential barrier. Meanwhile, Ta point defects together with metallic Ta precipitates induce strong phonon scattering, leading to a substantial reduction in lattice thermal conductivity. These synergistic effects yield outstanding TE performance, with a remarkably high zT plateau of 1.8 between 573 and 723 K, surpassing the performance of most previously reported Mg 3 (Sb,Bi) 2 systems. Moreover, a TE module constructed by both p-type and n-type Zintl phases achieves a high conversion efficiency of 9.6% at ΔT of 460 K. This work takes an important step toward the practical application of Mg 3 Sb 2 -based TE materials and devices.

The development of advanced pulse power technology proposes higher demand for dielectric energy storage materials . However, simultaneously obtaining high polarization and breakdown strength has become an obstacle to the development of dielectric materials. Herein, through the elaborate design of multivariant ions Me, BiMeO 3 system thin film Bi(Ni 0.5 Zr 0.5 )O 3 integrating high polarization, large breakdown strength and a localized heterostructure , generating an excellent energy storage density of 77.42 J cm −3 and efficiency of 70.29% at 5.60 MV cm −1 . The enhancive breakdown strength of Bi(Ni 0.5 Zr 0.5 )O 3 thin film is mainly attributed to the amorphous phase induced by low preparation temperature and the oxygen vacancy bound by the valence change of Ni 2+ ion, which reduces leakage current density. This design approach is expected to be widespread for the development of BiMeO 3 system thin film.

Metal nanoparticles confined in porous carbon materials have been widely used in various heterogeneous catalytic processes due to their enhanced activity and stability. However, fabrication of such catalysts in a facile and scalable way remains challenging. Herein, we report a general and scalable thiol-assisted strategy to synthesize sulfur-doped mono-/bi-/trimetallic nanoparticles confined in mesoporous carbon (S-M@MC, M = Pt, Pd, Rh, Co, Zn, etc.), involving only two synthetic steps, i.e., a hydrothermal process and pyrolysis. The strategy is based on coordination chemistry and hydro-phobic interaction that the metal precursors coordinated with the hydrophobic thiol ligands are located at the hydrophobic core of micelles, in situ confined in the hydrothermally prepared mesostructured polymer, and then converted into sulfur-doped metal nanoparticles confined in MC after pyrolysis. It is demonstrated that the S-PtCo@MC exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and improved durability toward acidic hydrogen evolution reaction due to the confinement effect and S-doping.

Large designs are devoted to decrease the volume fluctuation and pulverization of bismuth anodes. However, further advances in cycling stability at higher current density remain challenging. Herein, we skillfully designed a unique sandwich structure composed of bismuth nanoparticles coated with carbon nanolamella (Bi@C) and carbon nanolayers (C NL) via a simple pyrolysis method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the unique interlayer hybrid structure, the Bi@C composite material has an interconnected electron transportation pathway, which effectively alleviates the volume expansion during alloying/dealloying and reduces the agglomeration of the Bi particles during cycling. In addition, the Bi@C embedded in the double carbon layers structure (Bi@C/C NL) not only serve as highly conductive networks for Li + , but also provide a large surface area for electrolyte penetration and storage, which will enhance the charge transfer reaction kinetics process. As a result, the Bi@C/C NL-700 anode revealed a superior capacity (427.5 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 after 300 cycles), excellent long cycling stability (373 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 after 1500 cycles) and improved rate performance, outperforming the most reported Bi-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This work will lay an experimental foundation for the rational design of high-performance anode materials in rechargeable batteries with layered hybrid structures.

The main obstacles to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen are the low separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and the few activation sites for nitrogen. It is highly desirable to explore new strategies for improving the nitrogen fixation performance of catalysts. Herein, the Bi metal active sites are constructed on the surface of BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction by in situ reaction, which promote the absorption, activation, and dissociation of nitrogen molecules. Moreover, the existence of Bi metal and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction enhances the light absorption ability and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. The theoretical calculation also demonstrates that the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi composite has excellent electron structure and electron transfer efficiency. So, the ternary BiOBr/BiOI/Bi catalyst shows excellent performance of photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. The nitrogen reduction rate is 221.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.6 and 5 times higher than that of pure BiOBr and BiOBr/BiOI. The mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation of the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi is proposed based on the experimental and theoretical results. This study provides a novel method for improving the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance of catalysts.

The development of heterojunction composite materials with excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance is emerging as an effective means to address the hazardous electromagnetic waves . Here, two types of Cu 9 S 5 @VO 2 microspheres with different morphologies were designed. The Cu 9 S 5 @VO 2 microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and vector network analyzer. Results show that the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of unique lamellar-flower Cu 9 S 5 @VO 2 sphere reaches −56.98 dB, and the wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 6.88 GHz at only 2.5 mm thickness due to the synergistic effect of multiple loss mechanisms. Radar simulated radar cross section (RCS) results show a reduction of 16.56 dBm 2 . The design engineering of the phase interface on the material surface can functionalize the material surface properties, introduce lattice defects and polarization behavior, and improve the microwave absorption performance of the material. This work enriches the use of copper sulfide-based functional composites in microwave absorption with high-performance microwave absorbers by designing microscopically controllable, simple processes and heterojunction design.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 into valuable fuels and chemical feedstocks in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner is an ideal way to mitigate climate change and environmental problems. Here, we fabricated a series of self-supporting Bi–Sb bimetallic nanoleaves on carbon paper (CP) by a facile electrodeposition method. The synergistic effect of Bi and Sb components and the change of the electronic structure lead to high formate selectivity and excellent stability in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Specifically, the Bi–Sb/CP bimetallic electrode achieved a high Faradic efficiency (FEformate, 88.30%) at −0.9 V (vs RHE). The FE of formate remained above 80% in a broad potential range of −0.9 to −1.3 V (vs RHE), while FECO was suppressed below 6%. Density functional theory calculations showed that Bi(012)–Sb reduced the adsorption energy of the *OCHO intermediate and promoted the mass transfer of charges. The optimally adsorbed *OCHO intermediate promoted formate production while inhibiting the CO product pathway, thereby enhancing the selectivity to formate synthesis. Moreover, the CO2RR performance was also investigated in a flow-cell system to evaluate its potential for industrial applications. The bimetallic Bi–Sb catalyst can maintain a steady current density of 160 mA/cm2 at −1.2 V (vs RHE) for 25 h continuous electrolysis. Such excellent stability for formate generation in flow cells has rarely been reported in previous studies. This work offers new insights into the development of bimetallic self-supporting electrodes for CO2 reduction.

Graphical Supramolecular self-assembly in bi-solvent systems has been demonstrated as an unprecedented strategy to realize circularly polarized luminescence of achiral carbon dots. Dissymmetry factors of 10 −3 are obtained in solution, without the need of any additional element of chirality. An innovative strategy for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of carbon dots (CDs) has been developed: The achiral CDs displayed contrary supramolecular chirality and opposite CPL in two different bi-solvent systems, which are due to the formation of self-assembled helical nanostructures with two diverse assembly modes (P and M) in aggregate state via intermolecular π-π interactions and differential hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) without the need of any additional element of chirality.
