Facilitating charge transfer through an atomic coherent interface of a novel direct Z-scheme BiVO4@Cu3SnS4 heterojunction to boost photocatalytic performance

Fangting Liu,Chengcheng Chen,Qiaoyu Zhang,Zhengguo Zhang,Xiaoming Fang

Direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems are very promising composite photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic performance is highly associated with the quality of the interface within them. Herein, a novel direct Z-scheme heterojunction with a coherent interface has been presented for the first time. Specifically, the heterojunction was constructed by dispersing pre-prepared BiVO4 crystals into the reaction system to synthesize Cu3SnS4, followed by a hydrothermal reaction. It is shown that Cu3SnS4 was deposited on the surface of each pre-prepared BiVO4 crystal as a thin layer via heterogeneous nucleation to acquire a core–shell heterojunction. The BiVO4@Cu3SnS4 heterojunction was found to possess an atomic coherent interface, which is formed through the bonding between the (121) plane of BiVO4 and the (112) plane of Cu3SnS4, originating from the matching in the crystalline lattice between the two planes. The coherent interface facilitated the charge transfer from Cu3SnS4 to BiVO4 owing to the difference in their Fermi levels, thereby forming a built-in electric field pointing from Cu3SnS4 to BiVO4. Reduced fluorescence emission and a shortened carrier lifetime reveal an obvious reduction in the inter-band charge recombination for the optimal BVO@CTS-0.19 sample. Consequently, BVO@CTS-0.19 shows remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance in MO degradation, Cr6+ reduction and oxygen evolution. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for BVO@CTS-0.19 was verified by a suite of techniques. This work provides a universal strategy for building a coherent interface to develop high-performance direct Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Enhanced photocatalytic conversion of (3D/2D) BiVO4@Polypyrrole/g-C3N4 ternary composites with Z-scheme band alignment for the Antibiotic removal

Lingfeng Yan,Weiya Li,Qiangqiang Zhao,Zhijia Zhu,Chunyan Hu,Baojiang Liu

The photocatalytic degradation under mild conditions is considered as a promising solution for water pollution induced by the abuse of antibiotics. Herein, a new nanocomposite constructed (3D/2D) BiVO 4 @Polypyrrole/g-C 3 N 4 ternary composites with Z-scheme was successfully proposed. The result of photocatalytic performance evaluation indicated that BiVO 4 @Polypyrrole/g-C 3 N 4 (5 wt%) exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity compared with g-C 3 N 4 and BiVO 4 , even under different water quality and ion doping conditions, and the degradation efficiency of tetracycline (TC) can reach 90% within 120 min. The cycle test proved that the prepared composite catalyst has good stability and reusability. DRS, PL and other characterization results illustrated that the improvement of catalytic performance was attributed to electron transfer channel between (3D) BiVO 4 @PPy and (2D) g-C 3 N 4 , which can effectively separate photon-generated carriers. The possible mechanism based on Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed considering the free radical capture, Mott-Schottky, LC-MS and ESR . The present work serves as a principal route to design and extend striking step-scheme g-C 3 N 4- based nanocomposites with promising environmental purification and solar fuel generation usage.

The enhanced peroxymonosulfate-assisted photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light by g-C3N4/Na-BiVO4 heterojunction catalyst and its mechanism

Jin Kang,Yiwu Tang,Min Wang,Chongyue Jin,Jiayun Liu,Siyan Li,Zhilin Li,Jiangwei Zhu

In this study, to enhance the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-assisted photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light over BiVO 4 , g-C 3 N 4 coupling and Na + doping was used to co-modify BiVO 4 to obtain g-C 3 N 4 /Na-BiVO 4 (CN/Na-BiVO 4 ) heterojunction catalyst. The prepared CN/Na-BiVO 4 exhibited the apparently enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic TC degradation efficiency and can degrade approximately 98.20% of TC in 40 min, being 3.13 folds of BiVO 4 . The boosted TC degradation over CN/Na-BiVO 4 was ascribed to the Z-scheme heterojunction formation, doped Na + , more V 4+ and oxygen vacancies resulting from Na + doping facilitate the electron-hole pairs migration and separation. Meanwhile, more V 4+ and oxygen vacancies generated in Na-BiVO 4 also promoted the PMS activation . Therefore, a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROSs), including •O 2 − , h + , •OH, SO 4 •− , and 1 O 2 , were produced in CN/Na-BiVO 4 +PMS+Vis system to degrade TC. The mechanism of enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic degradation of TC was proposed. This work further highlighted the advantages of the PMS-assisted photocatalytic technology in antibiotics removal and also demonstrated that g-C 3 N 4 coupling and Na doping co-modify BiVO 4 was one effective and feasible method for promoting the PMS-assisted photocatalytic degradation of TC under visible light.

BiVO4 prepared by the sol–gel doped on graphite felt cathode for ciprofloxacin degradation and mechanism in solar-photo-electro-Fenton

Weikang Lai,Zhuoyao Chen,Shengjun Ye,Yanbin Xu,Guangyan Xie,Chaozhi Kuang,Yuxin Li,Li Zheng,Longmeng Wei

In this research, bismuth vanadate-doped graphite felt (GF-BiVO 4 ) was successfully prepared by sol–gel method, in which BiVO 4 owned superior electro-Fenton (EF) and solar-photo-electro-Fenton (SPEF) performance. Combined with the analysis by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and cyclic voltammetry (CV), the changes of electrodes were reflected in structure and physicochemical properties . The doping of monoclinic BiVO 4 endued GF with a higher surface area and more electro-active sites and better electrode activity in comparison to Raw-GF. Then, the GFs were used as cathodes to detect •OH concentration with coumarin (COU) as probe molecule and to evaluate photoelectric performance with ciprofloxacin (CIP) in photocatalysis , EF and SPEF processes. The results demonstrated that the concentration of •OH followed an order of SPEF   > EF   > photocatalysis, which was consistent with the removal rate of CIP (99.8%, 99.4% and 21.2%, respectively) on GF-BiVO 4 at 5 min. Further, five degradation pathways of CIP in SPEF system were proposed including the attack on piperazine ring, oxidation on cyclopropyl group, decarboxylation and hydroxyl radical addition, oxidation on benzene group and defluorination . The study provides insights into the enhancement of EF and SPEF performance and the degradation pathway of CIP in SPEF.

Integration of rod-shaped PCN-224(Cu) and BiVO4 to establish S‑scheme heterojunction for effective photocatalytic CO2-to-CO transformation

Min Xie,Qiaozhen Xu,Tao Lv,Hong Liu

The search for effective and highly selective photocatalysts for CO 2 transformation is exceptionally desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel BiVO 4 @PCN-224(Cu) heterostructure was constructed by growing BiVO 4 nanosheets on the surface of PCN-224(Cu) rods for visible-light-driven CO 2 photoreduction. The obtained BiVO 4 @PCN-224(Cu) heterostructure could selectively reduce CO 2 into CO in the absence of sacrificial reagents. The CO yield over the optimized sample reached 70.5 μmol g −1 h −1 (corresponding to an apparent quantum yield of 0.42% at 450 nm), a 5.1-fold increase over pristine PCN-224(Cu). The boosted activity of the hybrid could be credited to the S-scheme heterojunction formed at the interface of PCN-224(Cu) and BiVO 4 , which facilitated the separation of photogenerated charges and ameliorated the redox capability. In-situ XPS and hydroxyl radical determination confirmed the S-scheme charge transfer mode. This study provides a new strategy for constructing S-scheme heterojunctions involving metalloporphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks for high-performance CO 2 conversion.

Novel BiVO4/SiC/Cu2O ternary composite photocatalyst coupled with carbonized wood for simultaneous water evaporation and purification driven by solar energy

Xiaoting Yu,Fengfan Zhu,Boyi Yang,Jiancheng Zhou,Ke Wang,Nan Wang,Naixu Li

This work reported a novel BiVO 4 /SiC/Cu 2 O photocatalyst (BSC), and investigated the microstructure, elemental composition and photoelectrochemical properties of the ternary composite photocatalyst. Compared with pure BiVO 4 , BSC exhibited enhanced levofloxacin hydrochloride (LEF) degradation. The degradation rate of LEF can reach 85.83% within 100 min under the conditions of 25 mg BSC addition, LEF concentration of 10 mg/L and pH of 6.3. Furthermore, a monolithic photocatalyst (BSC@C-wood) was developed by coating BSC on one side of carbonized wood (C-wood), enabling water evaporation and purification. We collected clean water vapor and found that the SiC on C-wood can significantly enhance water purification efficiency due to its excellent photothermal ability. BSC@C-wood provides an alternative approach for the low-cost and high-efficiency treatment of wastewater.

Enhancing photoelectrochemical water oxidation activity of BiVO4 photoanode through the Co-catalytic effect of Ni(OH)2 and carbon quantum dots

Haili Tong,Yi Jiang,Lixin Xia

The CQDs  + Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode was fabricated by introducing CQDs with fluorescence and optical properties . The CQDs + Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode exhibited a low water oxidation onset potential (∼0.2 V vs. RHE) and a photocurrent density of 3.05 mA cm −2 at a voltage of 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is about 2.5 times than that of the unmodified BiVO 4 electrode, and the charge injection efficiency is 65%. Surface dynamics test showed that CQDs + Ni(OH) 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode had higher charge transfer rate and lower charge recombination rate than BiVO 4 electrode. As a cheap and stable catalyst for water oxidation, Ni(OH) 2 combined with CQDs can effectively improve the migration of photogenerated electrons and holes, thereby improving the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation activity of the photoanode.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of nano-scale BiVO4 photocatalysts and their excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of ciprofloxacin

Weidong Shi,Yan Yan,Xu Yan

New-type synthetic methods of BiVO 4 photocatalysts with high visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity are much desired. In this study, the branched BiVO 4 nanocrystal photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted method. They have unique strawberry-like structure with 5   nm sized mastoids scattered on the 200   nm sized particle surface. The obtained photocatalyst exhibits excellent visible-light response ( E g   =   2.5   eV) and super-high activities in degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). After Pt loading, the photocatalytic activities of branched BiVO 4 photocatalysts were enhanced tremendously. Pt nanocrystals on the particle surface not only act as charge collectors and transporters but also produce many active sites. The 2   wt.% Pt loaded BiVO 4 nanocrystal photocatalysts exhibit the CIP visible-light-driven photodegradation ratio of 91.97%, which show enhancement of ca. 25% compared with undecorated pure BiVO 4 photocatalysts.

Enhancing visible-light-based photodegradation of antibiotics over facile constructed BiVO4/S-doped g-C3N4 heterojunctions in an airlift photocatalytic reactor

Huda D. Abdul kader,Saad H. Ammar,Waqar A. Abdulnabi,Zaid H. Jabbar,Haidar Taofeeq,A. Al-Farraji

The development of new and effective photocatalytic heterojunctions for green environmental remediation under visible-illumination has received great attention in recent years. Herein, we assembled BiVO 4 -decorated S-doped g-C 3 N 4 (BVO/SCN) heterojunctions with different BVO:SCN ratios (5 to 30 wt% BVO) to achieve effective photocatalytic heterojunctions for visible-light-prompted degradation of antibiotic TC in a three-phase split-plate airlift photocatalytic reactor, in which successfully reducing charge recombination rate. Obviously, BVO/SCN endorsed greater photodecomposition performance of TC under visible-light (decompose 95.7 % of TC in 60 min), which compared to SCN was approximately 5-times enhancement. The TC mineralization efficiency of BVO/SCN hybrid (84 % within only 60 min) was higher than that of the individual BVO and SCN. The efficient internal self-mixing generated in the airlift photocatalytic reactor greatly contributed to increasing the TC degradation efficiency by improving the mass transfer and the irradiation process of the mixture, in which the degradation efficiency increased from 88 % without airlift to 95.7 % in airlift reactor. On the other hand, the high degradation efficiency was credited to the extended absorbing of visible-light and great separation of photo-prompted carriers through the formation of Z-type heterojunction between BVO and SCN. As recorded by the trapping investigates, the • O 2 − and • OH radicals act as the main reactive-species in the TC photocatalytic degradation process. Moreover, High durability of the developed BVO/BCN heterojunctions was obtained, in which 89.4 % TC degradation was still recorded after five rounds.

Improved charge kinetics of BiVO4/MoS2 photoanode by an TiO2 electron transport layer for photocatalytic fuel cell photodegradation and electricity generation

Aobo Wan,Longkai Zhu,Yizhen Zhang,Shijing Huang,Yun He,Shunxi Zhang,Fengjiao Quan,Jianfen Li

The poor contact between the photocatalyst and the FTO substrate are the main factors lead to the low performance of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). Herein, a FTO pre-treated with a TiO 2 electron transport layer was used as a substrate for the synthesis of the MoS 2 /BiVO 4 /pre-FTO photoanode. The proposed MBV-4/pre-FTO photoanode with its enhances the visible light absorption and effectively delays the recombination of the photoexcited charge. The MBV-4/pre-FTO composite photoanode (6.02 mA/cm 2 ) exhibited a photocurrent density that was 2.2 times higher than that of the BiVO 4 photoanode (2.78 mA/cm 2 ). This is attributed to the short charge migration length of the thin MoS 2 layer, the fast photoexcited electron transport effect of the TiO 2 seed layer, and the heterojunction structure of the proposed photoanode. The DFT calculation result indicated that the TiO 2 electron transport layer showed an outstanding photoelectron attractive and transporting effect. The MoS 2 /Ni foam was employed as the photocathode to establish a mismatched Fermi level for driving PFC. The short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, and maximum power density of the PFC were 0.578 mA/cm 2 , 0.632 V, and 0.125 mW/cm 2 , respectively. The main photodegradation active species are the superoxide anion (∙O 2– ) and the photoexcited hole (h + ), and the degradation efficiency is 61.97 %.

Synergistic effect of facet-regulated and photocatalytic-peroxymonosulfate activation of Fe(II)/decahedron monoclinic BiVO4 composites for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Jiaxing Wu,Jianqun Bao,Xuya Zhang,Zhuang Yang,Yiqi Liu,Mingxia Zhou,Yajun Wang,Guiyuan Jiang,Wenqing Yao

The efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in advanced oxidation technology is hindered by the low Fe(II)→Fe(III)→Fe(II) cycle efficiency. Herein, we report a Fe(II)/decahedral monoclinic BiVO 4 composite photocatalyst with a highly exposed (010) facet prepared by a hydrothermal method combined with a wet impregnation strategy. The numerous photogenerated electrons on the (010) facet promote the cycling of Fe(II)→Fe(III)→Fe(II) process, thereby significantly enhancing the PMS activation rate. The charge transfer mode of 1% Fe(II)/BiVO 4 was inferred from in situ X-ray photoelectron spectra. The composite catalyst exhibits significantly higher activity (96.7%) than the pristine BiVO 4 without facet regulation (56%). Controlling the crystal facets can effectively separate the photogenerated carriers of BiVO 4 ; the photogenerated electrons catalyze the cyclic transformation of Fe(III)/Fe(II) to efficiently activate PMS and degrade antibiotics. This work confirms the synergistic effect of facet engineering and the photocatalytic PMS activation system and provides a new perspective for the degradation of antibiotics.

ZnO Porous Nanosheets with Partial Surface Modification for Enhanced Charges Separation and High Photocatalytic Activity Under Solar Irradiation

Tong Yanhua,Lai Shilian,Wu Fan,Guo Yuhua,Chen Haifeng,Pan Guoxiang,Sun Jingwei

ZnO porous nanosheets (PNSs) with partial surface modification were fabricated by means of depositing amorphous BiVO 4 on basic zinc carbonate nanosheets followed by calcining at 500 °C. At low levels of anchored amorphous BiVO 4 , the surface of ZnO PNSs was partially evolved into Bi 3.9 Zn 0.4 V 1.7 O 10.5 (BZVO). The measurements for photocurrent and photoluminescence demonstrate that partial-surface BZVO-modified ZnO PNSs (ZB_0.01) could significantly inhibit the recombination of photoinduced carriers. This should be ascribable to the driving from surface potential difference produced by non-junction part and vertical p-n BZVO/ZnO junction part on the surface of ZB_0.01. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency in degradation of reactive brilliant red for ZB_0.01 under weak solar irradiation is about 8 times higher than that under strong visible-light illumination. The discussion regarding reasons for this enhancement demonstrates that each component in photocatalysts having rational valence-band maximum and conduction-band minimum energy levels is essential to obtain high-activity sunlight-driven catalysts.
