Flexible devices integrated with sensing and energy storage functions are highly desirable due to their potential application in wearable electronics and human motion detection. Here, a flexible film is designed in a facile and low-cost leaf templating process, comprising wrinkled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the conductive layer and patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with bio-inspired microstructure as a soft substrate. Assembled from wrinkled CNTs on patterned PDMS film, a strain sensor is realized to possess sensitive resistance response against various deformations, producing a resistance response of 0.34%, 0.14%, and 9.1% under bending, pressing, and 20% strain, respectively. Besides, the strain sensor can reach a resistance response of 3.01 when stretched to 44%. Furthermore, through the electro-deposition of polyaniline, the CNTs film is developed into a supercapacitor, which exhibits a specific capacitance of 176 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and a capacitance retention of 88% after 10 000 cycles. In addition, the fabricated supercapacitor shows super flexibility, delivering a capacitance retention of 98% after 180° bending for 100 cycles, 95% after 45° twisting for 100 cycles, and 98% after 100% stretching for 400 cycles. The superior capacitance stability demonstrates that the design of wrinkled CNTs-based electrodes fixed by microstructures is beneficial to the excellent electrochemical performance.

A hybrid nanocomposite containing a moisture-resistant surface based on MOF-199 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was synthesized. Characterization was undertaken using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).
The adsorption behavior of the MOF-199/CNTs composite to ibuprofen was then investigated at room temperature. Experimentation revealed that the hybrid absorbent had excellent adsorption capacity for the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), ibuprofen, with maximum adsorption up to 40.8
mg/g. The adsorbent was able to be recycled several times without deactivation. Finally, the MOF-199/CNTs composite was used as the extraction sorbents for selective extraction of ibuprofen, ketoprofen and naproxen in human urine. The results showed successful application of the nanocomposite
to NSAID analysis in spiked human urine samples. Recoveries at three concentrations were 89.7–96.8%, 79.3–85.5% and 95.6–97.5% for ibuprofen, ketoprofen and naproxen, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within the range of 2.9–5.3%. The results
demonstrated that the MOF-199/CNTs composite is an excellent adsorbent for determination of NSAIDs in spiked urine samples.

In the current study, novel environmentally friendly and interfacially active carbon nanotubes/SiO2 nanomaterials (CNTs/SiO2) for emulsified crude oil separation were prepared via grafting nano-SiO2 on the surface of oxidized carbon nanotubes (Ox-CNTs). The structure of the as-prepared CNTs/SiO2 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible absorption spectra, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Besides, three-phase contact angles (θ) were employed to evaluate the wettability of CNTs/SiO2. Also, it was found that the θ value of CNTs/SiO2 was about 90°. The nanomaterials with interfacial activity can spontaneously assemble at the oil–water interface, thus improving the droplet coalescence in the emulsion. Afterward, the demulsification performance was evaluated in crude-oil emulsions using the bottle test, which demonstrated that the demulsification efficiency demulsification efficiency could reach 87.40%. Also, the water phase was clear, while the optimum concentration and sedimentation time were 500 ppm and 30 min, respectively. Furthermore, the possible demulsification mechanism was evaluated by an optical microscope. The findings in this work might provide a novel environmentally friendly and interfacially active nanomaterial as a crude oil demulsifier.

Diverse Fe-based nitrides and phosphides have drawn considerable attention owing to their abundant source, high theoretical capacities, and environment benignity. However, it still remains a crucial challenge to develop a facile preparation approach of robust Fe-based anode materials for the next-generation durable lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we constructed two type polycystic microsphere anode materials (Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs) through a scalable industrial spray-drying technology combined with following chemical nitridation/phosphorization conversion strategy. Both the resultant Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs materials exhibit unique hierarchical polycystic microsphere structure and improved conductive network caused by the incorporation of amorphous carbon and dense CNTs coating layers. The unique structure merits endow these capabilities of facilitating electrons/ions transport and accommodating notorious volume change during charge-discharge cycling. Consequently, the Fe 2 N@C/CNTs and FeP@C/CNTs anode materials deliver enhanced rate capability (216 and 232 mA h g −1 , respectively, at a high current density of 5 A g −1 ) and durable cycling stability with reversible capacities of 489 and 571 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles, respectively. In addition, this work also provides a transplantable preparation strategy for other conversion-type anode materials with poor electrical conductivity and large volume effect.

CuS nanospheres interconnected by the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been successfully prepared via a facile one-step microwave-assisted method. The component and microstructure of CuS/CNTs hybrid materials are well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Assembled as electrodes and tested in lithium ion batteries, the composites show impressive electrochemical performances. After 450 cycles, the CuS/0.1 CNT and CuS/0.5 CNT release more than 437 and 569 mAh g −1 , respectively, at 400 mA g −1 , which are superior to those of contrast experiments (pristine CuS and CuS mechanically mixing with CNTs). Even at the high current density of 6400 mA g −1 , the CuS/0.5 CNT still displays the reversible capacity of about 400 mAh g −1 . The improved performances can be ascribed to the inherently CNTs conducting network, boosting the interior electron transport and reaction kinetics, so that a significantly enhanced reversible capacities and rate capability can be realized. Furthermore, the surface properties and reaction kinetics of electrodes are also investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic intermittence titration (GITT) measurements, proving the enhanced lithium storage properties.

Utilizing abundant and renewable solar energy to produce clean freshwater from the existing seawater and wastewater has been considered a reliable and effective method to alleviate the severe shortage of freshwater currently. However, most of traditional desalination membranes usually showed insufficient photothermal conversion capacity, poor thermal stability, complex preparation procedure, and unsatisfactory water treatment efficiency. Therefore, we mixed as-prepared ultra-long hydroxyapatite nanowires (HNs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for building HNs/CNTs membranes with high photothermal conversion efficiency, porous structure, high water transporting speed and remarkable high-temperature resistance in this work. Under one solar irradiation, the average light absorption of HNs/CNTs membrane was as high as 93%, and the evaporation rate of its integrated evaporator in simulated seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl) was 1.21 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . Meanwhile, the HNs/CNTs membranes have good salt resistance and high Na + removal rate, which makes their integrated evaporators suitable for solar-driven recirculation desalination process . Notably, the HNs/CNTs membranes also have excellent thermal stability, significant refractoriness and good thermal insulation , resulting in high temperature resistance and long-term solar evaporation stability. The water evaporation rate of HNs/CNTs integrated evaporator can be stabilized around 1.43 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 3.74 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in 10 cycles of experiments under one and three solar irradiations. In addition, the removal rates of MB and RhB after photothermal purification via HNs/CNTs membranes reached up to 99.96% and 100%, respectively, displaying the promising and broad applications in solar desalination and dye wastewater purification.

To effectively mitigate the environmental and ecological impacts stemming from polymer wastes, the development of innovative recycling and reusing strategies is of utmost importance. In response to the call of “Waste-to-Wealth”, this study presents a green and efficient method to convert waste polypropylene (waste protective cloths, WPC) into Ni@CNTs hybrids via catalytic carbonization. Subsequently, these Ni@CNTs hybrids are directly applied as functional nanofillers to prepare fire resistant polycarbonate (PC) composites. The experimental results demonstrated that the combined catalysts composed of NiCl 2 /Ni(C 5 H 7 O 2 ) 2 were efficient in catalyzing WPC into Ni@ CNTs hybrids, achieving the yield was as high as 58.6 g/100 g WPC. Leveraging the superior characteristics of Ni@CNTs hybrids, they were used as a fire retardant of polycarbonate (PC) matrix to fabricate PC/Ni@CNTs composites. The PC/3Ni@CNTs exhibited excellent fire retardancy, as evidenced by the limited oxygen index (LOI) of 30.5 %, the V 0 rating in UL-94 vertical burning test, and the 64.1 % reduction in the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) in cone calorimeter test. Meanwhile, it displayed low toxicity with 75.0 % reduction in the peak of CO production (COP). The mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effects of Ni and CNTs, which combine the catalyzing carbonization and the enhanced char layer together in condensed phase. Thus, this study provides a green and sustainable strategy for the conversion of polymer wastes into high-valuable carbon/metal hybrids, and exploits their advanced application in the fabrication of fire-resistant polymer composites.

Constructing multi-level multi-scale heterogeneous interfaces in magnetic carbon-based composites remains a formidable challenge, requiring rational material combinations to effectively balance dielectric and magnetic losses for achieving high strength and wide frequency wave absorption. Electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials consisted of cobalt-nickel (CoNi) magnetic nanochain, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) and hollow carbon microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method without external magnetic field . These composites possessed a unique multi-level multi-scale heterogeneous interface structure that is highly advantageous for efficient absorption of EMWs. The CoNi nanoparticles were self-assembled into uniformly distributed and randomly oriented magnetic nanochains, which were further reassembled with NCNTs and hollow carbon microspheres to form heterogeneous interface structures resembling a rose, chrysanthemum, hedgehog ball, and bauhinia tree. Due to the high-density interface enhancing the loss ability of interface polarization, as well as the higher saturation magnetization , coercivity , and wave absorption ability of the magnetic nanochains compared to the magnetic nanoparticles themselves, the minimum reflection loss achieved is −66.86 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth achieved is 5.01 GHz, at a content as low as 11 wt%. This study provides a new idea for generating nanochains without magnetic fields and constructing multi-level and multi-scale heterogeneous interface structures to achieve strong absorption and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB).

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pose potential risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. This work developed an ozonation-assisted electrochemical filtration (OAEF) system using a Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs composite membrane electrode and systematically investigated its efficiency, mechanisms, and practicality for PPCPs removal. The results suggest that the excellent adsorption and hydrophilic properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x , combined with its formation of an optimized membrane structure when mixed with CNTs, significantly enhanced the pollutant adsorption capacity and water permeation flux of fabricated electrode. Ozone incorporation in the electrochemical filtration process facilitated pollutant abatement, achieving approximately 99 % degradation and 42 % mineralization of fluoxetine (FLX), a representative PPCP. Moreover, the OAEF system demonstrated broad pH suitability and good stability, effectively detoxifying FLX-contaminated wastewater. The analysis of oxidants and electrode component evolution in the OAEF system, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealed that enhanced mass transfer and electron transport promoted electro-peroxone initiation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, thereby improving pollutant elimination and regenerating the adsorption capacity of electrode. Further analysis of 34 PPCPs treatment using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models indicated that adsorption on the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs was primarily influenced by pollutant solubility, C O bond content, dipole moment, and molecular weight, while degradation was significantly impacted by aromatic ring content, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy, and solubility. Additionally, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNTs membrane electrode exhibited satisfied fouling mitigation during the treatment of real surface water, suggesting that the OAEF process is feasible for practical applications.

A film electrode materials of iron-manganese oxide composite carbon nanotubes (FeMnO x /CNTs) with dual adsorption sites was obtained by a co-precipitation method, which exhibited excellent selectivity of WO 4 2- in an electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) system. The main components of FeMnO x are MnO x and Fe(OH) 3 . In FeMnO x /CNTs composite film , Fe(OH) 3 with abundant hydroxyl functional groups on its surface improved the ion storage capacity, while MnO x served as the main selective separation material to selectively adsorb the WO 4 2- . A scalable ESIX pilot system was also designed to examine the effect of different operating conditions on system performance. The W(Ⅵ) adsorption capacity was as high as 187.76 mg/g and the separation factor of W/Mo was 21.03. Combining experimental characterization and results, it was confirmed that the highly efficient selective extraction of WO 4 2- in neutral solution should be derived from the dual-site (i.e., electrochemical coordination sites on MnO x and electrochemically induced inner-sphere complexation sites on Fe(OH) 3 ) adsorption. Hence, it is believed that such a novel electroactive FeMnO x /CNTs film electrode with dual adsorption sites could be a promising candidate for industrialized tungsten-molybdenum separation by ESIX technology.

Developing state-of-the-art materials with durability, superhydrophobicity, and superoleophilicity is essential for effective cleanup of oil spills and the treatment of oily wastewater. In this study, a novel superhydrophobic/superoleophilic chitosan-based composite was created by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a chitosan (CS) matrix and depositing superhydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles, forming a sponge-like absorbent (SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS) for selective oil absorption and efficient oil/water separation. The optimal CNTs incorporation was comprehensively investigated to enhance the structural stability and mechanical strength of the chitosan/CNTs/silica composite. The size and loading of in-situ-grown SiO 2 nanoparticles on the chitosan/CNTs composite surface were identified as crucial factors in achieving surface superhydrophobicity. The optimized SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS, with its three-dimensional porous structure, exhibited not only superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, but also high chemical stability, excellent resistance to high temperature and friction. Notably, the SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS composite effectively absorbed oil with a capacity of up to 18.24 times its own weight and selectively separated oil/water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions, achieving a separation efficiency of exceeding 97 % under vacuum pump conditions. This study not only introduces a novel approach for developing superoleophilic chitosan-based sponge-like composite materials, but also presents a promising strategy for selective oil absorption and efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions.
