l-Tyrosine protected Cu nanoclusters for reversible pH-sensors

Cai Zhifeng,Zhang Caifeng,Jia Kang

A fast, simple, green and low-cost synthesis method in aqueous solution was successfully established for the preparation of l -tyrosine protected Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs). Subsequently, the as-prepared Cu NCs was characterized by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It exhibited good water solubility, excellent photostability and high stability toward high concentration of sodium chloride. The Cu NCs revealed maximum excitation and emission peaks at 430 and 477 nm, respectively. Importantly, the Cu NCs showed a rapid response, a liner relation over the pH ranges from 5.02 to 11.92 and could be repeated for five consecutive cycles without fluorescence decay. Further, the as-prepared Cu NCs was applied for the determination of pH value in water samples. Simultaneously, all above features showed that l -tyrosine protected Cu NCs had great potential for sensing of pH in biological field.

Discrimination and Quantification of Glutathione by Cu+-Based Nanozymes

Meixuan Liu,Chen Yan,Qianyun Ye,Xiaohuan Sun,Jie Han

Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant low-molecular-weight biological thiol in vivo and has been linked to several diseases. The accurate quantification of GSH is therefore crucial for disease diagnosis and monitoring. In this study, we prepared self-assembled Cu(I)-Cys (cysteine) nanozymes through a two-step procedure. The Cu(I)-Cys nanoparticles exhibited peroxidase-mimicking activity. Upon the addition of H2O2, they were able to oxidize 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxTMB, resulting in a measurable increase in UV-Vis absorption at 655 nm. However, in the presence of GSH, oxTMB was reduced back to TMB, leading to a decrease in UV-Vis absorption at 655 nm. By utilizing these changes in the absorption intensity, we achieved the sensitive detection of GSH with a detection limit of 2.13 μM. Moreover, taking advantage of the different peroxidase-mimicking activities of Cu(I)-Cys nanoparticles at various pH values, a sensor array with Cu(I)-Cys nanoparticles at pH 4 and pH 5 was constructed. The discrimination of GSH among Cys and ascorbic acid was achieved and the practicability of the sensor array in human serum was validated. This novel approach holds significant promise for the precise discrimination and quantification of GSH and its potential applications in disease diagnosis and therapeutics. Keywords:nanozyme;GSH quantification;GSH discrimination

In-situ construction of Cu@C3N4 for oil lubrication

Xiaohong Gao,Yizheng Wang,Feibo Li,Huixia Feng,Yanming Wang,Hongwei Che,Xiaoliang Zhang

In this study, a series of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) decorated with Cu nanoparticle hybrids (CNx/Cuy) were prepared by one pot calcination method. The chemical composition of hybrids were determined by XRD, FTIR and XPS analysis . And the synthesized CNx/Cuy hybrid presented different morphologies with the different x/y ration. Then CNx/Cuy were added to liquid paraffin as lubricant additive , and the tribological properties of lubricant oils for steel/steel friction pairs were evaluated using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The results showed that friction processes lubricated with oil containing CN3/Cu1 shows better tribological properties. And oil containing 0.2 wt % CN3/Cu1 could achieve 57.3 % and 53.8 % reduction in the friction coefficient, respectively, compared to pure liquid paraffin and liquid paraffin containing pure g-C 3 N 4 . Based on the analysis of the worn surface topography and chemical composition, the excellent lubrication performance resulted from the formation of tribochemistry-induced tribo-film. The average thickness of tribo-film was about 100 nm, and it was composed of carbonization resulting from g-C 3 N 4 , Cu, Fe and self-lubricating Fe 2 O 3 . The formation of Fe 2 O 3 and carbonization in the tribo-film indicating the interaction between CN3/Cu1 with steel surfaces enhanced the stability and strength of tribo-film. Thereby the metal surface was further protected from friction and wear.

Designing recyclable Cu/ZrSBA-15 for efficient thiophene removal

Hai-Xin Qi,Shang-Ru Zhai,Zhen-Zhen Wang,Bin Zhai,Qing-Da An

Adsorptive desulfurization (ADS) is an effective method for the selective capture of thiophenic sulfur compounds , and the ADS capacity of an adsorbent has been demonstrated to strongly depend on the dispersion degree of active species. Herein, series of zirconia-modified SBA-15 (ZrSBA-15) framework with uniformly dispersed Cu sites have been prepared via a urea-assisted homogeneous deposition strategy, aiming for efficient adsorption towards thiophene . The resultant materials were thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) analysis techniques. It was revealed that the Cu species were highly dispersed inside the ordered ZrSBA-15 framework with platelet morphology, rather than aggregation outside the surface, leading to excellent adsorption capacity for thiophene (up to 9.35 mg/g at 50 °C). The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm, respectively. Spent adsorbent can be regenerated by simple heating treatment in N 2 at 500 °C, without obvious losing of thiophene adsorption capacity even after eight cycles.

Cu-MOF-derived Cu2V2O7@C nanofilm for electrochromic properties

Dong Jinxiu,Cui Shichuang,Wang Fei,Wei Wei,Yin Ziluo,Zhang Yuqing,Zhu Quanyao

Electrochromism (EC) is a color control technique for providing visual information, in which vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) is a promising material for electrochromic applications due to its excellent ionic intercalation/deintercalation properties and cathodic/anodic color-changing properties. However, its poor cycling stability and color change response rate limit its practical application. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combine the rigidity and flexibility of inorganic–organic materials and can meet the requirements of EC materials such as cycle stability, electrical conductivity, and stress-interference resistance. We report here a strategy to modify V 2 O 5 with Cu-MOF. Cu-doped V 2 O 5 and carbon skeleton (Cu 2 V 2 O 7 @C) composites were prepared for electrochromism. In this scheme, Cu doping can facilitate lithium ion migration by broadening and stabilizing the structure of V 2 O 5 , and the distribution of the carbon skeleton can broaden the contact of the active material with the electrolyte and improve the electron conduction. Combining these merits, it exhibits excellent long-term cycle stability (the capacity retention rate reaches 91.78% after 2000 cycles), the light transmission modulation is greatly improved compared with V 2 O 5 (Δ T  = 69%, doubled), and the response time is reduced by 30.43%. This study provides a new perspective for improving the light modulation ability and long-term use stability of vanadium oxide EC materials and promotes the development of MOF materials in the field of electrochromism.

Interfacial interaction of Cu–Ag nanoparticles with different surfactants

Liang Mengfan,Zeng Guoan,Yang Shujie,Wei Xinyuan,Zhu Yan,Liu Jinkun

In this article, the effect of the surfactant on the interaction effect and structure stability of Cu–Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experiment. The results showed that Ag NPs were coated around the surface of Cu NPs in Cu–Ag/surfactant system. However, the introduction of different surfactants resulted in a different interaction styles. With the surfactant from the consist of single structure (PVP or CTAB) to the consist of multiple structure (PVP&CTAB), the interaction energy between the surfactants and NPs increased rapidly. Meanwhile, the surfactant mixture promoted the interaction among NPs; also, it reduced the interaction between the NPs and external circumstance; the interface effect could be further controlled by adjusting the surfactant or their mixture.

Melamine enhancing Cu-Fenton reaction for degradation of anthracyclines

Yixuan Zhao,Jiahui Zhao,Shuqin Liu,Dunqing Wang,Jian Liu,Fei Zhang,Xiangshu Chen

Melamine (MA) enhanced Cu-Fenton process was developed for the degradation of anthracyclines. Taking daunorubicin (DNR) degradation as an example, we found that the initial first-order apparent constant of Cu 2+ /MA/H 2 O 2 system with a molar ratio of 1:8 for Cu 2+ :MA was 5.2 times higher than that of conventional Cu 2+ /H 2 O 2 system. The in-situ reductive coordination between Cu 2+ and MA facilitated the generation and stabilization of Cu + species, thereby accelerating the rate-limiting step of Cu 2+ /Cu + conversion and maintaining high levels of Cu + during the degradation process. Moreover, pre-synthesized Cu + -MA complexes ( e.g. , CM-250) further enhanced the efficiency of the Cu-Fenton reaction by increasing both the Cu + proportion and MA chelation. The apparent activation energy for DNR degradation in CM-250 mediated Fenton reaction (15.9 kJ mol −1 ) was lower than that in systems involving Cu 2+ /MA (41.2 kJ mol −1 ) and Cu 2+ (65.6 kJ mol −1 ). Enhanced generation of various reactive oxygen species (·OH,·O 2 - , and 1 O 2 ) was confirmed, with 1 O 2 playing a dominant role, significantly improving both degradation rate and mineralization degree for DNR. MA-enhanced Cu-Fenton process also offers a convenient alternative to effectively remove other anthracyclines and organic micropollutants, holding great promise for advancing advanced oxidation processes as well as practical large-scale degradation applications targeting multiple pollutants.

Synthesis of Cu-Doped Fe3O4 Nanocomposites for Bacterial Disinfection

Jingtao Zhang,Ruichun Nan,Yuheng Dong,Jing Yao,Tianzhu Liang,Ruoyu Li,Junyang Li,Pier Francesco Ferrari,Patrizia Perego,Bingkun Liu

In this work, copper-doped Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanocomposites were synthesized via the solvothermal method. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and electron paramagnetic resonance. The performance of the catalysts in the Fenton-like reaction was evaluated through the analysis of their antibacterial activity in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Electron paramagnetic resonance results indicated that • OH and • OOH, generated from hydrogen peroxide, were the primary active components in the reaction system. The Cu 2+ -Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites showed stronger antibacterial activity towards Escherichia coli than Fe 3 O 4 , possibly due to the presence of Cu 2+ which accelerated the circulation between Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions and enhanced the utilization efficiency of hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that the concentration of released copper ions in aqueous solution remained within safe limits. Herein, we may provide a promising environmentally friendly catalyst for water disinfection treatment.

Single-atom Pd boosted Cu catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation

Lele Feng,Xueying Bai,Jifeng Pang,Hongchen Cao,Xiaoyan Liu,Wenhao Luo,Xiaofeng Yang,Pengfei Wu,Mingyuan Zheng

Ethanol dehydrogenation is a vital elementary step in ethanol upgrading, for which Cu-based alloy catalysts are the most promising candidates. Nevertheless, elucidating the underlying reasons for the synergistic effect between alloying components and host metals remains challenging due to the intrinsic structural complexity and dynamic evolution of alloy catalysts under operational conditions. Herein, single-atom Pd modified Cu-MFI catalysts with well-defined structures were designed for ethanol dehydrogenation to acetaldehyde and hydrogen. Comprehensive characterizations using aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Pd atoms are isolated by surrounding Cu atoms with a coordination number of 9–10, forming −0.36 e charged single-atom sites and being uniformly dispersed on the surface of Cu catalysts. The newly generated Pd δ − and Cu δ + sites synergistically reduced the activation energy barrier for C–H bond cleavage in ethanol. These sites simultaneously enhanced hydrogen adsorption and H–H bond coupling, leading to improved ethanol conversion and acetaldehyde productivity over Pt/Cu-MFI catalysts.

Thermochemical Mechanism of Optimized Lanthanum Chromite Heaters for High-Pressure and High-Temperature Experiments

Tao Xia,Yifeng Han,Chuanhui Zhu,Zhongxiong Sun,Chongyang Yuan,Qi Cui,Jin-Guang Cheng,Wei Du,Wenting Li,Kui Xie,Keke Huang,Shouhua Feng,David Walker,Man-Rong Li

High-pressure heaters in large volume presses must reconcile potentially contradictory properties, and the whole high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) community has been engaged for years to seek a better heater. LaCrO3 (LCO)-based ceramic heaters have been widely applied in multianvil apparatus; however, their performance is far from satisfactory, motivating further research on the chemical optimization strategy and corresponding thermochemical mechanism. Here, we adopted a chemical-screening strategy and manufactured tubular heaters using the electrically, chemically, and mechanically optimized Sr–Cu codoped La0.9Sr0.1Cr0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (LSCCuO-9182). HPHT examinations of cylindrical LSCCuO-9182 heaters on Walker-type multianvil apparatuses demonstrated a small temperature gradient, robust thermochemical stability, and excellent compatibility with high-pressure assemblies below 2273 K and 10 GPa. Thermochemical mechanism analysis revealed that the temperature limitation of the LSCCuO-9182 heater was related to the autoredox process of the Cu dopant and Cr and the exchanging ionic migration of Cu and Mg between the LSCCuO-9182 heater and the MgO sleeve. Our combinatorial strategy coupled with thermochemical mechanism analysis makes the prioritization of contradictory objectives more rational, yields reliable LCO heaters, and sheds light on further improvement of the temperature limitation and thermochemical stability.

Low-temperature Cu-Cu bonding enabled by a simulated interface approach: process optimization and interfacial mechanisms of Ar plasma activation and glycine wet treatment

Gui Chen,Yun-Hao Shao,Wen Zhu,Xin-Ping Qu

The oxidation of the Cu surface remains the most significant challenge of low-temperature Cu-Cu bonding technology. Schemes to achieve and maintain a high-quality Cu surface prior to bonding are therefore urgently needed. Co layer was used as a passivation layer and a simple wet treatment method using glycine was then proposed to remove surface oxides from Co metal. In this work, a novel simulated bonding methodology is proposed, which utilizes a two-step PVD Cu/Co on the PVD Co/Cu surface with a vacuum break, followed by annealing to simulate and investigate bonding mechanisms. The reliability of this methodology was first rigorously validated using Ar plasma activation as a benchmark, yielding simulated specific contact resistance results that closely align with actual bonding data. The simulation bonding methodology was employed to systematically optimize the process, after which the bonding mechanism was investigated. Consequently, chip-level bonding was successfully achieved at 230 °C, exhibiting an ultra-low specific contact resistance of 2.9 × 10 −8  Ω·cm 2 with a bonding area exceeding 99%. HRTEM and EDS analyses confirm that glycine treatment promotes direct Co-to-Co contact and uniform atomic interdiffusion. This methodology provides an efficient platform for investigating interfacial treatment processes and accelerating the development of advanced 3D integration technology.

Efficient synthesis of methanol and ethylene glycol via the hydrogenation of CO2-derived ethylene carbonate on Cu/SiO2 catalysts with balanced Cu+–Cu0 sites

Tongyang Song,Wei Chen,Yuanyuan Qi,Jiqing Lu,Peng Wu,Xiaohong Li

Achieving high catalytic performance with Cu-based catalysts is crucial for the hydrogenation of CO2-derived ethylene carbonate (EC) to simultaneously yield methanol (MeOH) and ethylene glycol (EG). Although Cu-based catalysts are widely studied for the target reaction, there are still some issues to be clarified. In this study, we prepared a 29.1 wt% Cu/SiO2-MHT catalyst by a modified hydrothermal method and successfully applied it to the hydrogenation of EC. In comparison with its three analogues having similar Cu loading and comparable Cu particle size but prepared by different methods, we found that the catalytic performance of the Cu/SiO2 catalysts, including the activity and the selectivity to MeOH, could be tuned by adjusting the Cu+/(Cu0 + Cu+) ratio via different preparation methods. As a result, the Cu/SiO2-MHT catalyst furnished 89% MeOH yield and 37.6 h−1 turnover frequency. To our best knowledge, these values are one of the highest among all heterogeneous Cu catalysts up to now. The results reveal that a cooperative effect exists between Cu0 and Cu+. When the Cu0 species are sufficient to activate H2, a more favorable formation of MeOH can be achieved with more Cu+ species and greater Cu+ surface areas. Furthermore, a greater amount of Lewis acid on the Cu/SiO2-MHT catalyst is also beneficial for MeOH formation.
