A novel polyfunctional group-modified poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) polymer, termed PFG-PHEMA, was synthesized for adsorption of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ . Material characterization confirmed that the surface functional groups facilitated efficient adsorption of these ions. pH optimization experiments demonstrated that the adsorption capacities of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ , reaching 162.2 and 150.3 mg·L −1 respectively, were maximized at a pH of 5, with an initial heavy metal concentration of 200 mg·L −1 . Kinetic and isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption process conformed to a monolayer, homogeneous, and chemisorption model, achieving equilibrium within 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 500 mg·g −1 for Cu 2+ and 384.6 mg·g −1 for Cd 2+ . Competitive adsorption experiments showed that PFG-PHEMA exhibited superior selectivity for Cu 2+ over other metal ions. This selectivity was corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which identified the sulfhydryl group as the crucial functional moiety responsible for Cu 2+ selectivity. Furthermore, the presence of low concentrations of fulvic acid (FA) enhanced adsorption via ternary complex formation, whereas higher concentrations impeded adsorption by forming FA-metal complexes that competed with the polymer. Overall, the strategic incorporation of multiple functional groups into PFG-PHEMA conferred a high adsorption capacity for Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ . The analysis further indicated that sulfhydryl groups exhibit high selectivity toward Cu 2+ , whereas amine and oxygen-containing groups preferentially bind to Cd 2+ , reinforcing the potential of PFG-PHEMA as a highly effective adsorbent for heavy metals.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction presents a promising strategy to alleviate environmental issues caused by massive CO 2 emissions. SrTiO 3 , a potential photocatalyst for photocatalytic CO 2 reactions, is limited by poor photoresponsivity and fast photogenerated carrier recombination. In this work, a series of Cu 2+ species modified SrTiO 3 nanofibers (xCuO/STO) was prepared combining sol-gel method and electrospinning with different copper content. The CH 3 OH yield of the 0.08CuO/STO photocatalyst reached up to 5.75 ± 0.27 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was 2.2 times higher than that of pure SrTiO 3 . It was attributed that the blend electrospinning promoted Cu 2+ species to be well dispersed on the surface of the SrTiO 3 nanofibers. The strategy effectively enhanced the light absorption of the photocatalyst and inhibited the recombination of the photogenerated carriers. Part of appropriate characterizations were employed to elucidate the above point. In addition, to explore the inherent mechanism between the two species, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were further applied in the inherent mechanism between the species. This work provided a blend electrospinning approach for designing cocatalyst-modified SrTiO 3 nanofibers for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 .

ABSTRACT Mitochondrial dysfunction in microglia has been implicated as a key pathogenesis of most neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and neuroinflammation caused by mitochondrial oxidative stress are important factors leading to neuronal death in AD. Herein, a "dual brake" strategy to synergistically halt mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation targeting mitochondria in microglia is proposed. To achieve this goal, (3-carboxypropyl) triphenyl-phosphonium bromide (TPP)-modified Cu 2-x Se nanozymes (Cu 2-x Se-TPP NPs) with dual enzyme-like activities was designed. Cu 2-x Se-TPP NPs with superoxide dismutase-mimetic (SOD) and catalase-mimetic (CAT) activities can effectively scavenge ROS in the mitochondria of microglia and relieve mitochondrial oxidative stress. In vivo studies demonstrated that Cu 2-x Se-TPP NPs can alleviate oxidative stress and promote neuroprotection in the hippocampus of AD model mice. In addition, Cu 2-x Se-TPP NPs can regulate the polarization of microglia from the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, promote A β phagocytosis and reshape the AD inflammatory microenvironment, thus effectively attenuating AD neuropathology and rescuing cognitive deficits in AD model mice. Taken together, this strategy preventing mitochondrial damage and remodeling the inflammatory microenvironment will provide a new perspective for AD therapy.

In this paper, a fluorescent functionalized polyacrylamide material (P) was prepared by free radical precipitation polymerization based on a coumarin derivative (COMN) and acrylamide (AM). The chemical structure and composition of P were analyzed by 1H NMR, UV–vis, and FT-IR spectra. The results of fluorescence spectra of common cations illustrate that P can realize the sensitive detection of copper (Cu2+) within 30 s in the pure water system, and the fluorescence quenching rate is as high as 95.47%, the limit of detection is 7.2 nM. It is worth noting that the above system rapidly changed from green to orange within 0.5 s. In addition, the fluorescence spectra of common anions reveal that P/Cu2+ had a strong interaction with cyanide (CN–) (0–180 μM), and the limit of detection was 39.12 nM. The results of the cell imaging test show that P still manifests a good fluorescence response to Cu2+ and CN– in HeLa cells, which provides a new method for the detection of these ions in vivo.

Marine biofouling constitutes a pervasive biological threat that seriously impedes the sustainable development of the marine economy. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were typically employed as marine coatings to mitigate biofouling. However, SLIPS are often hindered by rapid lubricant leaching, short service life, and a simple antifouling strategy, thereby limiting their applicability in marine environments. To circumvent the limitations of conventional SLIPS, synergistic antifouling strategies were frequently adopted. In this study, we developed a copper/graphene nanofluid-infused porous surface (Cu/G@uPDMS-oil) utilizing the breath figure method. The nanofluid can be firmly locked into the microstructure within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form a stable lubricating layer and provide a sustained release of silicone oil due to dynamic hydrogen bonding. In addition, when silicone oil is released from the coating surface, the intrinsic copper (Cu) and graphene (G) nanoparticles come into substantial contact with the surrounding solution, leading to galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion produces synergistic antifouling through a dual mechanism of induced oxidative stress and copper ion (Cu2+) release. Consequently, the resulting coating exhibits high stability, continuous silicone oil leaching, and self-replenishing properties. Due to the labyrinth effect of graphene, the release rate of Cu2+ is significantly diminished to 6.2 μg·cm–2·day–1. Furthermore, this nanofluid-based smooth surface demonstrates superior antibacterial, anti-algal, and anti-conch properties. The developed Cu/G@uPDMS-oil coating holds great potential for significantly mitigating marine biofouling.

In this paper, using a strong coordination of the multi-amino groups of polyethylenimine (PEI)/SiO 2 nanoparticles with Cu 2+ and the weaker carboxyl-amine interactions with heme chloride (hemin), novel Cu 2+ -hemin dual-functionalized PEI/SiO 2 nanoparticles (abbreviated as Cu 2+ /hemin/PEI/SiO 2 NPs) were conveniently synthesized. The Cu 2+ /hemin/PEI/SiO 2 NPs exhibit both the peroxidase-like activity of hemin and the electrochemical signaling properties of Cu 2+ . Moreover, a large number of hemin molecules were successfully loaded onto Cu 2+ /PEI/SiO 2 NPs through electrostatic interactions. This not only prevented their self-aggregation-induced inactivation in aqueous solutions, but also catalytically amplified the electrooxidation signal of Cu 2+ /PEI/SiO 2 NPs by shortening the electron transfer distance. Subsequently, these nanoparticles spontaneously assembled on the overoxidized polypyrrole-modified reduced graphene oxide (abbreviated as OPPy/rGO) electrode surface through Cu N coordination between OPPy and Cu 2+ , and π-π stacking interactions between hemin and rGO. As a novel immunosensing platform, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor for carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA125), a specific biomarker for epithelial ovarian cancer was developed by covalently immobilizing CA125 capture antibodies onto the Cu 2+ /hemin/PEI/SiO 2 NPs@OPPy/rGO hybrid nanomaterials. Elevated serum CA125 levels correlate significantly with ovarian cancer progression. With the increasing concentration of CA125 antigen, the current responses of this immunosensor were decreased due to the formation of antigen-antibody insulating immune complexes. The proposed immunosensor exhibited excellent performances within a wide linear range from 5 × 10 −5 to 200 U·mL −1 for CA125 and a low detection limit of 1.2 × 10 −5 U·mL −1 (S/N = 3). Additionally, this immunosensor demonstrated good stability, reproducibility, and selectivity, making it a promising tool in clinical screening, early diagnosis, and prognostic monitoring of ovarian cancer.

Stable, treatment-resistant Cu complexes in practical wastewater are frequently neglected. Positively charged lysozyme amyloid fibrils (AF), however, exhibit unexplored potential for their adsorption. This study engineered an amyloid fibril-chitosan composite (AF-CS) xerogel and evaluated its adsorption performance in three systems: free Cu 2+ , Cu-Citrate binary, and Cu-EDTA binary. The characterization confirmed successful synthesis of AF-CS, revealing a porous and amine-rich structure with a more positive surface charge than that of pure AF xerogel. Systematic evaluation demonstrated adsorption capacities of 65.37 mg/g (free Cu 2+ ), 166.14 mg/g (Cu-Citrate), and 40.31 mg/g (Cu-EDTA). MINTEQ 3.0 speciation analysis identified anionic Cu-ligand complexes as dominant species in binary systems. Further investigation revealed synergistic adsorption mechanisms in the Cu-Citrate system: electrostatic attraction coupled with decomplexation-complexation pathways liberated citrate ligands, enabling electrostatic shielding and adsorption bridging that enhanced Cu coordination. Conversely, the high stability of Cu-EDTA chelates limited adsorption primarily to mechanisms involving electrostatic attraction, resulting in suboptimal performance. These findings advance the theoretical understanding of AF-CS interactions with diverse Cu species, demonstrating AF-CS as a promising material for Cu recovery from complex wastewater and providing guidance for designing novel remediation materials.

In this study, we developed an innovative Cu 2-x Se/PDA/AIPH nanoparticle platform that combines photothermal therapy and chemotherapy for effective tumor treatment. The Cu 2-x Se nanoparticles, known for their strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption, were encapsulated within a polydopamine (PDA) and 2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane] dihydrochloride (AIPH) matrix. Upon NIR irradiation, the platform triggers localized heating and subsequent thermal decomposition of AIPH, releasing ROS to induce significant oxidative damage in tumor cells. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that Cu 2-x Se/PDA/AIPH nanoparticles exhibit excellent biocompatibility, effective photothermal conversion, and potent anticancer efficacy. This multifunctional nanosystem offers a promising approach for enhancing tumor therapy by combining PTT with ROS-mediated chemotherapy.

Constructing a stable Cu 0 /Cu 2+ interface is critical for enhancing the C-C coupling during the process of CO 2 electroreduction. However, the high-valence Cu species are unstable under the operating conditions. Herein, polyhedral-shaped CuO is coated with hydroxy-rich SiO 2 nanoparticles (m-SiO 2 /CuO) to stabilize the Cu 2+ species, enabling efficient CO 2 reduction to the ethylene product. Significantly, the optimal m-SiO 2 /CuO catalyst exhibits an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 55.5 % and an industrial-level partial current density of 500 mA cm −2 toward ethylene. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra reveal that the strong interfacial interaction between CuO and hydroxy-rich SiO 2 is conducive to stabilizing the Cu 2+ species. In-situ characterizations reveal that the Cu 0 /Cu 2+ interface facilitates CO 2 activation and the key intermediate *OCCHO, thus promoting the production of ethylene. This work paves the way for developing advanced electro-catalysts of producing ethylene.

Background Glutathione (GSH) serves as a pivotal antioxidant within biological systems. Dysregulated GSH levels are associated with a spectrum of pathologies, including carcinogenesis, hepatic dysfunction, and neurodegenerative disorders. Developing robust GSH detection methodologies is essential for assessing cellular health, facilitating early diagnosis of disease states, and tracking therapeutic efficacy. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL), which integrates electrochemical reactions with luminescent output, offers low background noise, making it highly suitable for biomolecule analysis. ECL-based GSH assays employing advanced nanomaterials are anticipated to amplify signals at low GSH concentrations, thereby playing a critical role in clinical diagnostics and biochemical research. Results This study presents a novel ECL sensor for the ultrasensitive detection of GSH, utilizing chromium/g–C 3 N 4 –loaded carbon nanospheres (CNs@Cr/g-C 3 N 4 ) composites. Carbon spheres (CNs) and chromium (Cr) can improve the ECL properties of g-C 3 N 4 . However, the ECL signal of CNs@Cr/g-C 3 N 4 is quenched (off-state) due to complex formation with Cu 2+ . Upon GSH addition, the higher coordination affinity between GSH and Cu 2+ partially restores the ECL signal of g-C 3 N 4 (on-state), allowing for quantitative GSH detection. Under optimized conditions, the linear detection range for GSH extends from 5.0 × 10 −9 to 1.0 × 10 −4 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.3 × 10 −10 M (S/N = 3), alongside high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. More notably, the as-proposed ECL sensor was successfully applied to the quantification of GSH in real drug samples with excellent recovery rates. Signifiance In contrast to traditional techniques for GSH detection, our approach involves a one-time chemical modification of the electrode, eliminating the need for complex probe immobilization steps and streamlining the detection process. Besides, this “off-on” ECL sensing strategy, leveraging Cu 2+ and CNs@Cr/g-C 3 N 4 , offers an innovative approach for developing advanced sensing systems. And this method is user-friendly, cost-effective, holding significant potential for applications in clinical diagnostics and pharmaceutical analysis.

As an important signaling molecule, carbon monoxide (CO) plays an important role in plant growth and development including affecting stomatal movement, stress response and root development. Thus, it is necessary to develop fluorescent probes that can be used to detect CO in live plant tissues and further enable a deep-understanding of its biological function, mechanism and metabolism. In this paper, a novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+ modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of CO. The fluorescence of PDOAs can be effectively quenched by Cu2+ through the multi-coordination interaction. In the presence of CO, Cu2+ can be effectively reduced to Cu+, which resulted in the release of free PDOAs and the Cu2+-quenched bright green fluorescence was restored obviously. Through this ingenious strategy, the abiotic CO can be accurately detected and identified with high selectivity, rapid response time within 5 min and an ultralow detection limit of 72.4 nM. Due to the admirable biocompatibility, the nano-material based probe has been successfully applied for in vivo imaging CO in the root tip and leave tissues of lettuce. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a fluorescent probe-based methodology for the sensitive tracking of CO in plant tissues.
